Where Are the "Lost 10 Tribes" Today?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

We need to realize that Israel today includes far more territory than just this tiny modern Middle Eastern nation. Most people associate the name Israel with the Jewish state of that name. However, the Jewish people are descendants of primarily two of the 12 tribes that made up ancient Israel—Judah and Benjamin, along with a considerable portion of the priestly tribe of Levi.
After the reign of King Solomon, God caused the kingdom of Israel to divide into two separate nations because of Solomon's sins. The northern 10 tribes retained the name of Israel while the southern portion with its two tribes was called the kingdom of Judah. The word Jew is merely a shortened form of Judah. The first time the word Jews appear in the King James Version of the Bible, in 2 Kings 16:5-6, the northern nation of Israel is actually at war with the Jews! So clearly they are not one and the same people.
After the time of Solomon, these two nations became two politically distinct geographical entities. The Jews are part of the Israelites descended from the patriarch Jacob, whose name was changed to Israel. But he had other sons, and the descendants of 10 of them formed the northern nation of Israel, including the descendants of the patriarch Joseph.
Joseph had two sons, Ephraim and Manasseh. In due time their descendants became two great modern nations, one with an empire that stretched around the world. Joseph's descendants became the easiest to identify in contemporary history because the prophetic blessings they were to receive stand out so distinctly (see Genesis 49:22-26 and Deuteronomy 33:13-17).
The intriguing story of how the modern descendants of the patriarch Joseph eventually became Great Britain and the United States of America is told in our free Bible study aid The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy . Much of God's prophetic plan cannot really be understood without the national identifications carefully laid out in this publication.
Both Great Britain and the United States played major roles, one following the other, in the restoration (after nearly 2,000 years) of the Jewish people to nationhood in the Middle East in 1948. The Balfour Declaration in Britain (1917) was followed by U.S. President Harry Truman's crucial political backing in the late 40s. The destinies of all three nations—biblically known as Judah, Ephraim and Manasseh—are intertwined and will be a big part of the fulfillment of Bible prophecy at the time of the end, albeit in different ways.

A Dangerous New Trend Police Under Attack

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

MP3 Audio (16.85 MB)
For many years, the answer little boys would give when asked what they want to be when they grow up has been “I want to be a policeman.” They recognized that the police are protectors, friends, the people who put their lives on the line every day to protect society.
Today, however, the police officer’s job has suddenly become much more dangerous. Police are themselves under fire, battling growing resentment and distrust by large segments of a society they are sworn to protect.
Recently, many have cited a rise in resentment against police and authority figures as the cause of the wave of anti-police violence. What should be our attitude towards authority?
In late August, Harris County (Texas) sheriff’s deputy Darren Goforth was ambushed and killed at a suburban gas station. While fueling his patrol car, a lone gunman walked up to him and shot him in the back of the head, then shot him repeatedly as he lay dying. Goforth, 47, left a wife and two children.
One week later, New York Police Department officer Brian Moore was shot to death when he stopped to investigate a man suspected of carrying a gun on a New York street. Just 25, he left a wife and two small children. The young officer had already been awarded two medals for meritorious service.
Near Atlanta, Fulton County police officer Terrance Green was killed in another ambush-style attack by a man who assaulted a group of officers after having “gone on a rampage” throughout south Fulton County, Georgia.

“War on America’s police officers”

Through early November, 2015 witnessed the slaying of 34 police officers. September was a particularly deadly month, with seven officers giving their lives in the line of duty.
“War has been declared on America’s police officers,” says Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.
Across the country, police feel themselves under fire, their role in society maligned, their safety threatened. Speaking for the Fraternal Order of Police, which represents more than 300,000 police officers, FOP President Chuck Canterbury said, “It’s almost a radical rhetoric causing officers to say, ‘Wait a second, I’m out here to serve the public. I saved a little old lady from a purse snatching. I gave CPR on the highway and saved somebody. Now, I’m a villain?’” (quoted by Ed Payne and Artemis Moshtaghian in CNN, “Attacks Leave Police Feeling Under Siege,” Sept. 4, 2015).
Across the United States, a string of highly publicized confrontations between police and mostly minority youth has ignited a wave of animosity against law enforcement and law enforcement officers. Major American cities are the battlegrounds, where police themselves feel threatened. A sinister piece of graffiti painted on the side of a Houston building near the Harris County police station showed a picture of a police officer with a gun pointed at his head.
Hollywood has piled on, with celebrities such as movie director Quentin Tarantino calling cops “murderers” over the recent media-hyped shootings in minority neighborhoods. Sadly, the Hollywood police haters and rabble-rousers seem to get no end of publicity in a celebrity-obsessed nation.

The Ferguson effect

Observers have noted the long-standing distrust and animosity between police and largely African-American inner city youth, especially young men. Those simmering tensions exploded after the August 2014 shooting of Michael Brown, a young African-American man shot by Ferguson, Missouri, police office Darren Wilson. Brown had just robbed a convenience store, and evidence showed that he attacked Wilson just before he was shot.
Brown’s death touched off a wave of racial violence in Ferguson’s minority community, resulting in night after night of widespread violence, burning and looting. Confrontations with police produced dozens of injuries to both rioting citizens and the police, tens of millions of dollars in property damage, and more than 100 arrests.
Now, what is being called “the Ferguson effect” has caused police to be far more cautious, especially when operating in minority neighborhoods. The Wall Street Journal reported this effect in chilling terms:
“Almost any police shooting of a black person, no matter how threatening the behavior that provoked the shooting, now provokes angry protests … Arrests in black communities are even more fraught than usual, with hostile, jeering crowds pressing in on officers and spreading lies about the encounter” (Heather McDonald, “The New Nationwide Crime Wave,” May 29, 2015)

Police more cautious, crime rates up

Across the nation, some mayors and officials in cities with heavy minority populations have themselves accused police of racial bias and excessive use of force. In New York, Mayor Bill De Blasio alleged the New York Police Department used excessive racial profiling, a charge echoed by many minority mayors across the nation.
Faced with criticism from city hall, the media, popular culture, and minority communities, police everywhere report being more cautious and reserved in their responses. One example: In many cities, officers now wait in their patrol cars for backup before confronting crime suspects.
Police cautiousness has emboldened criminals, leading to a spike in crime rates across the nation. After falling for two decades to just over 300 in 2014, murder rates in New York City more than doubled during the first six months of 2015. In Baltimore, gun violence rose more than 60 percent compared to the same period last year—its 43 homicides in May 2015 the deadliest month since 1972. Statistics show this pattern across the country in 2015.

What’s behind it?

Events in inner-city neighborhoods have shown that the right provocation can fan smoldering embers of resentment into a full-blown blaze. But is this a new development or something that has been growing for years?
History has a way of repeating itself. With the rise of highly emotional racial conflicts in the late 1960s, police began to hear themselves referred to as “pigs,” an epithet that continued in inner-city neighborhoods long after the violence subsided. White college students picked up the term, screaming it at police who were called to keep order in often-violent protests against the Vietnam War.
We can add the effects of modern mass media, whose ranks today are filled with the products of modern Western education, which denies the existence of any moral authority, and, therefore, challenges all authority.
And we have seen incidents in which law-enforcement officers have acted rashly, unwisely, abusively or even criminally, leading to unnecessary injuries and deaths. Some have been charged with and convicted of murder, manslaughter and assault, among other crimes.
Advancing their own media narrative, television news coverage of the Ferguson incident and others too often demonize police officers, painting pictures of alleged “police brutality” while totally ignoring barrages of rocks and debris hurled at officers, accompanied by taunts and threats. And usually agitators are in the background egging on the crowd.
The picture of growing disrespect and hatred toward police and authority figures is impossible to ignore. But is there an even deeper, more fundamental cause?
Few recognize, and even fewer will acknowledge, the sinister ultimate cause behind today’s violence and disrespect for authority. Your Bible identifies a powerful and evil adversary who, incredible as it may sound, casts his influence over all mankind today. “You He made alive, who … once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience …” (Ephesians 2:1-2, emphasis added throughout).
This being has the world under his sway, influencing millions in attitudes of rebellion and strife (1 John 5:19; Revelation 12:9). Read our free booklet Is There Really a Devil ? to learn more about this being and his influence on the world.

The prophesied solution

Human beings, it seems, have always had a problem with authority, which gives rise to the question: What should be our attitude towards authority and authority figures? The apostle Paul addressed this issue in his letter to the church in Rome:
“Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil” (Romans 13:1-3, New American Standard Bible). Paul went on to exhort the young pastor Timothy to give thanks for “all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).
Thankfully, despite today’s violence, your Bible proclaims a soon-coming time when people will live at peace, a time when God’s law will guide all of humanity. Study the prophecies of Isaiah 2:2-4; Isaiah 9:6-7; Isaiah 11:6-9 and Isaiah 35:5-7. It also foretells the time when Satan, this great adversary, will be restrained—no longer able to influence mankind:
“Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having … a great chain in his hand. He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years … and shut him up … so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished” (Revelation 20:1-2).
At that time, when God’s long-foretold Kingdom is established on earth, Satan’s influence will be replaced with attitudes of cooperation, giving, and true justice for all. Notice in particular what the prophet Isaiah foretells of Christ in Isaiah 11: “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and strength, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord… with righteousness He will judge the poor, and decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth” (Isaiah 11:2-4, New American Standard Bible).
Millions who today feel, whether rightly or wrongly, that they are denied justice will be treated fairly. The entire world will respect authority and live secure, peaceful lives under the supreme law of God, which will ensure justice, peace and tranquility. God speed that day!

Global scope of crises leading toward prophesied "Beast"

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

More than 80 years ago Winston Churchill wrote a four-volume history of World War I titled The World Crisis. Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the shooting of Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand in the Balkan city of Sarajevo, igniting the fires of the First World War in 1914. Even more so today than at that time, points on the globe previously thought insignificant can suddenly be vaulted into newspaper headlines by an emergent crisis with continental and even global implications.
London's Financial Times noted that “the latest crisis [in Cyprus] draws in Britain, Greece, Israel, the US and Turkey, not to mention Germany as the Eurozone's indispensable decision maker. The tremors hitting Cyprus could shake the world” (March 23-24, 2013). A Newsweek drophead pointed out, “The financial crisis in Cyprus has global ramifications” (Steve Hanke, “Little Island, Big Problem,” March 22).
We live in a shrinking world of globalism made ever smaller by incredible technological breakthroughs like the Internet with its countless websites and e-mails. A global economy propelled by a one-world government is not impossible, even during our chaotic, confused and divided age of human misrule. Passages in the biblical book of Revelation indicate that is precisely where man's governments will finally wind up.
A supranational power bloc centered in Central Europe will eventually emerge, according to Bible prophecy. Both this power and its totalitarian leader are referred to in the Bible as “the beast.” Scripture tells us, “And all the world marveled and followed the beast.”   When this happens, people will wonder: “Who is like the beast? Who is able to make war with him?”  (Revelation 13:3-4, emphasis added throughout).
But just how dictatorial and globally influential will this charismatic dictator of a coming world superpower become? Scripture shows that his power and influence will astonish the whole world. A union of 10 national or regional leaders will temporarily be fully behind this prophesied beast power. Although his murderous reign will be relatively short (see Revelation 17:12), while it lasts true Christians will find themselves in mortal physical danger.
The prophecy further states of the coming ruler: “And authority was given him [by Satan the devil] over every tribe, tongue, and nation” (Revelation 13:7; see also Revelation 13:4). Clearly an economic stranglehold will be a vital part of his virtual mesmerization of whole populations. “He causes all … to receive a mark … that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (verses 16-17). (To understand what this passage symbolizes, read the Bible study aid The Book of Revelation Unveiled .
Thankfully, these horrendous troubles will all end with the second coming of Jesus Christ. At that time, it will be announced, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever” (Revelation 11:15, English Standard Version).
The Financial Times article mentioned earlier speaks of “new anxieties about the geopolitical impact of the [largely economic] instability in Cyprus. This island is not only physically divided between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, but is located in a combustible region where the military, diplomatic, energy and financial interests of at least a dozen powers collide.” Large foreign bank deposits are at the center of the island nation's economic difficulties. Addictions to Prescription Painkillers Are Epidemic!

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

Could you or someone you know be addicted to pain pills?
Quick relief from severe suffering is a welcome blessing, but prescription pain medications often turn into a curse when abused.
When you think about drug abuse and drug addictions, you may tend to think of three images: rich superstars (think Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley), foolish kids, and “bad” people who often end up in prison. But there are millions of “good” people, young and old, who are addicted to prescription drugs, often without anyone else knowing about it.

The commonly abused prescription drugs

When you hear about addictions to “drugs,” you may think first of street drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine (“meth”). But the number of people addicted to prescription drugs is greater than the number of addictions to all three of those street drugs combined.
The prescription drugs most commonly abused are the ones most commonly prescribed , which fall into three categories:
1. Opiods (narcotic analgesics, i.e., pain relievers) such as oxycodone (Oxycontin and Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin) and meperidine (Demerol).
2. Sedatives and tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax and Nembutal.
3. Stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Dexedrine.
The most commonly abused category? The painkillers . And because addictions to painkillers in the U.S. are epidemic, even among expectant mothers, there is also an epidemic of babies who are born addicted to painkillers . The suffering newborns then have to be gradually weaned off that drug. Very, very sad.

What is addiction? What is “drug abuse”?

Addiction can be either a physical (biological, chemical and pathological) or psychological dependence (an emotional longing for the effects of the drug—which can lead to physical addiction). People often experience both at the same time.
When an addictive substance is regularly ingested, that person's body will eventually build up a tolerance to it so larger amounts are needed over time to achieve the same result. This temptation to increase the dosage often leads to addiction.
Be forewarned that physical addictions are often permanent, which means the addicted person will have a life-long battle trying to resist the temptation to relapse into again using that drug.
Addictions to prescription drugs usually occur only when the prescription is “abused.” Abuse includes many easy-to-make mistakes: taking more pills or more frequently than prescribed, taking them after the pain has stopped, mixing them with alcohol or other drugs, taking a medication that was not prescribed for you, or using similar prescriptions from more than one doctor.
Once addicted, a person usually feels desperate because the withdrawal symptoms can be terrible. He might go “doctor shopping” (going to several trusting doctors to obtain similar prescriptions), search for sources on the Internet, go to unscrupulous “pill mills” or stoop to buying on the street illegally.

Why are most prescription painkillers so addictive?

To better understand the power of painkillers, let's compare opiates and opioids . Opiates are extractions from opium poppy plants. They include morphine and codeine. And morphine is frequently processed chemically to produce—guess what— heroin for the illegal drug trade.
The painkillers are opioids that are synthetic or semi-synthetic but chemically similar to opiates. The addictive properties of the painkillers are similar to heroin and morphine!
Opioids give some people a mild emotional uplift. This too can present a temptation to abuse the prescription, especially for someone who is depressed.
If these facts were more widely understood, there would be more healthy fear and respect for the potential risks involved in taking narcotic painkillers.

Youth addiction and adult addiction

Youth painkiller abuse often starts with young people “experimenting” by taking a “leftover” medication that was prescribed for someone else like a family member. Motivations include curiosity, thrill-seeking or an urge to relieve anxieties.
When adults (of any age) become addicted, it generally is because they have abused their own prescriptions. When there is drug abuse, addiction can occur within only a few weeks.
The good news is that when a patient takes an opioid painkiller for only as long as there is severe pain, strictly follows the prescription and is closely monitored by one doctor, it is rare that he will become addicted.
The main point of this message is this: Please don't let yourself become addicted to anything. Prevention is a thousand times easier than any cure! Stay alert for any early-warning signs of addiction!

If you or a loved one is addicted, seek help right away!

Valuable and thorough information on addictions is abundant, including many helpful Internet websites.
If you suspect that you or a loved one is addicted, begin by educating yourself. If you are addicted, please, please seek help. People very seldom overcome an addiction on their own.
If a loved one or friend is addicted, please don't put him on a guilt trip. Address it like any other medical problem. He's already feeling terribly ashamed and fearful. What he needs from you is respect, compassion and encouragement as well as your gentle guidance.
If an addicted person will also rely on God for comfort, guidance, motivation and strength, he has a huge advantage! Trying to conquer an addiction may seem like an impossible task. But Jesus Christ said, “The things which are impossible with men are possible with God” (Luke 18:27).
The United Church of God has a special website— Breaking Free Journal —devoted to helping people break free from the chains of addictions and other self-destructive behaviors. It does not give medical advice, but you will find it quite helpful and encouraging. Go to breakingfree.ucg.org . To read about addictions, click on Topics and then click on Addictions  .

Government Water Commission maps show 96 overexploited aquifers in Mexico. Seawater has polluted 17 others because of too much pumping, while toxic seepage is spreading fast. Mexico City, built eight centuries ago atop vast lagoons, cannot adequately supply water for its 22 million inhabitants.
Like many cities in the world, less than half of the city's waste is treated. The rest sinks into underground lakes or flows toward the Gulf of Mexico, turning rivers into sewers. This presents a chilling prospect for Mexico's future. Cantu Suarez, a deputy director of the Mexican National Water Commission, lists 35 cities that must shrink dramatically unless more water can be found. Cities shrinking? Most cities continue to expand through real estate development. Suarez says, “We would have to evacuate people. Without water, it is the only way” (Mort Rosenblum, The Brownsville Herald , Associated Press, Aug. 2, 2003).
A forced exodus from parched cities seems far-fetched, and no one suggests it will happen next week. But it is a specter haunting Mexico's future. Could a forced exodus of people from one city to another occur because there is no water for them? The scenario isn't that far-fetched if you believe Scripture.
Read what the ancient prophet Amos wrote: “I [God] also withheld rain from you, when there were still three months to the harvest. I made it rain on one city, I withheld rain from another city. One part was rained upon, and where it did not rain the part withered. So two or three cities wandered to another city to drink water, but they were not satisfied; yet you have not returned to Me, says the LORD ” (Amos 4:7-8 Amos 4:7-8 7 And also I have withheld the rain from you, when there were yet three months to the harvest: and I caused it to rain on one city, and caused it not to rain on another city: one piece was rained on, and the piece whereupon it rained not withered. 8 So two or three cities wandered to one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have you not returned to me, said the LORD.
American King James Version×
). This does sound remarkably like a forced exodus in search of water.
Suarez explains, “We have lots of water in some places but not where the people are.” And much of the water Mexico depends upon is the same water that is badly needed in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. One forecast is that Corpus Christi, Texas (population 277,454), will run out of water around 2018. In the meantime the problem is getting worse, reports Rosenblum: “In Oaxaca, south of Mexico City, women line up at dawn to fill a few plastic containers from a passing water truck. In Alamos, far to the north, ancient aquifers are pumped at five times the sustainable rate.”
Appearances are deceptive
Canada is a land of lakes and rivers. And most people would view Canada as having an inexhaustible water supply. By comparison to Africa and other dry places, most of Canada's waters are pristine. But the cumulative effect of mistreatment over the years has taken an evident toll. The cities of Victoria on the west coast and Halifax on the east still dump billions of liters of raw sewage into their oceans. The world's biggest freshwater basin, the Great Lakes, are described as a chemical soup that's not fit to drink or swim in. Some concerned experts view them as loaded with toxic chemicals, heavy metals, pesticides and sewage. Far too many rivers and streams in Canada have been badly contaminated by industrial activity.
We humans can live about a month without food, but only a few days without water. Because 70 percent of the human body is water, quick diets are dramatic at first through water loss. Of all the water in the world, only 2.5 percent is fresh and two thirds of this is locked up in glaciers and ice caps. Nobody knows how much water is underground or in permafrost. All life on earth is sustained by a fraction of one percent of the world's water. If a five-liter jug (about 11⁄3 gallons) represented the world's water, the available fresh water would not quite fill a teaspoon.
Uneven spread
Mexico is only one example of desperation in a world running short of water. Parts of the earth are dying, with fields poisoned by salt and village wells running dry. And there are diplomatic and legal battles looming. The Colorado River, drained by 10 U.S. states with their own water crises, is a muddy trickle by the time it reaches the rich farmland of Baja California. Under complex water agreements with the United States, Mexico can take water from the Rio Grande but must pay it back. President Vicente Fox has promised to pay the debt, which amounts to enough to put the state of Delaware under a foot of water. But with Mexico already so short of water, it isn't realistic to think it can happen.
Consider water distribution around the planet. While Canada and Brazil are water blessed, Saudi Arabia and South Africa are water stressed! The combined renewable water resources of Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Syria and Egypt are less than those of Nicaragua. Each Canadian has almost 100,000 cubic meters available, while each Kuwaiti has only 95. While 99 percent of the U.S. and Canadian populations have access to safe water, only 53 percent have it in Nicaragua and only 44 percent in Paraguay. Now Las Vegas, Nevada, is a pretty dry place with only 8.9 centimeters (3.5 inches) of annual rainfall. Yet its city planners allow hotels and casinos to build artificial lakes, waterfalls and swimming pools of immense proportion. The contrast: affluent millions enjoy pools and fountains for recreation, while one billion others live without access to adequate drinking water or basic sanitation.
Overall there is plenty of water on the planet, because God made it a habitation for mankind. The huge problem is burgeoning populations in places that lack adequate water resources, as well as mismanagement of available resources. Canada, with only 0.5 percent of the world's population, has 5.6 percent of its usable fresh water supply. China, with 22 percent of the population on earth, has only 5.7 percent of the usable fresh water. We cannot just move fresh water to where it is most needed, like in the Sahara, Ethiopia, Somalia or India.
Is disinfecting the solution?
Disinfecting city water supplies can also cause problems. In January 2000, the Newfoundland government identified dozens of its communities with high levels of potentially dangerous THMs (trihalomethanes) in water supplies. Drinking such water over a long period can cause bladder and colon cancers, but health experts maintain the benefits of sterilizing water far outweigh the small risk of cancers. And so bottled water is booming. But is it safe? Canadian standards for testing bottled water are lower than those for municipal supplies, so there are no assurances that bottled water is any better than tap water.
A great thirst to come
At the start of the 20th century there were 1.65 billion people; 100 years later there are more than 6 billion, and the United Nations estimates there will be nearly 9 billion by 2050. But the annual supply of renewable fresh water will remain the same, so the amount of water available to each person decreases as the population grows, raising the possibility of water shortages. Currently 300 cities in China suffer from water shortages. Hydrologist Peter Gleick wrote in The World's Water 1998-99 : “In India, 60 million people have been poisoned by fluoride. Roughly 11,000 children die every day because of a lack of safe drinking water and sanitation. In Bangladesh, one in five water pumps have been found to be contaminated with a high level of arsenic. Water in Nairobi, Kenya, is so scarce that slum dwellers tap into waste water pipelines to get access to the precious, though dirty liquid” (cited in Canada and the World Backgrounder , May 2001).
Good news of abundant water
Today we know our reality. As farm pesticides run off into streams, factories and industries leach their effluent into rivers and mines pour sludge into streams, our water resources are increasingly contaminated and unfit for human use. But look at an almost hard-to-imagine future. Prophesied is a river that actually heals and cleanses everything wherever it flows. This isn't just a dream, but rather a guaranteed promise for mankind from the Creator of all life. Notice what Isaiah says: “The poor and needy seek water, but there is none, their tongues fail for thirst… I [God] will open rivers in desolate heights, and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water” (Isaiah 41:17-18 Isaiah 41:17-18 17 When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue fails for thirst, I the LORD will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. 18 I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the middle of the valleys: I will make the wilderness a pool of water, and the dry land springs of water.
American King James Version×
).
At Christ's powerful return to earth, He will initiate a river that will do wondrous things for mankind. “When it reaches the sea, its waters are healed. And it shall be that every living thing that moves, wherever the rivers go, will live. There will be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters go there” (Ezekiel 47:8-9 Ezekiel 47:8-9 8 Then said he to me, These waters issue out toward the east country, and go down into the desert, and go into the sea: which being brought forth into the sea, the waters shall be healed. 9 And it shall come to pass, that every thing that lives, which moves, wherever the rivers shall come, shall live: and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these waters shall come thither: for they shall be healed; and every thing shall live where the river comes.
American King James Version×
). What is pictured is the answer to so many pollution problems. As this river reaches the oceans, all the pollution from oil spills, nuclear submarine contamination and sewage dumped into the seas will be healed. All the depleted fish stocks around the world will be restored.
What a day it is going to be for farmers, fishermen and the environmentally concerned. And no more will thirst be a curse to the planet. No more will the water run dry! WNP

Amid chronic political, social and economic problems, Filipinos here and abroad have unitedly focused on the fights of their No. 1 sports hero, Manny Pacquiao . Especially now as he prepares for his Nov. 13 (Nov. 14, Manila time) match against a much taller and bigger opponent, Antonio Margarito (called the Tijuana Tornado).
The fight for WBC's Super Welterweight World Title will be at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. (It will also give Pacquiao the chance to win an eighth world title in as many weight divisions, a feat unprecedented in boxing history.)

Effect of Pacquiao fights in the Philippines

During his numerous boxing events, phenomenal and unprecedented situations occur in the Philippines. The national crime rate drops to zero. Even fighting between government forces and various rebel armies simply stops. These are indeed times when great national peace temporarily descends upon the whole nation.
Because of Pacquiao's influence on national peace, Avelino Razon Jr., former adviser on the peace process under ex-president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, said, “Pacquiao has been tapped to be the 'symbol' of peace and unity because each time he fights[,] communist and Muslim insurgents were drawn away briefly from combat duties to watch the bout” (GMA News.TV , May 19, 2009).

Who is Manny Pacquiao?

Gareth A. Davies, a sports journalist for The Daily Telegraph since 1993, in his Nov. 6, 2010, update said:
“Pound for pound, Pacquiao is said to be the best fighter in the world. [Boxing] Promoter Bob Arum says Pacquiao is better than the greats he has promoted over the last 40 years, including Muhammad Ali. 'Manny Pacquiao is the best fighter that I have ever seen,' Arum says. Better than Ali? 'Yes he is, because Ali was essentially a one-handed fighter. Manny Pacquiao really shocks these fighters because he hits equally hard from the left side and the right side.'”
An editorial by Aleck Francis T. Lim, published Nov. 7, 2010, in The Bohol Standard adds: “For a Filipino to endorse a big shot politician in America, that is something for a record. Manny Pacquiao was seen on television and read in newspapers around the globe endorsing U.S. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid who won during the most recent midterm elections in America. The appearance of Pacquiao for Reid's campaign was credited as one of the factors of the senator's victory.” (This endorsement by Pacquiao was, of course, arranged by Bob Arum.)
Interestingly, 54 Philippine congressmen have flown to the United States to watch this weekend's fight. Pacquiao himself was elected to the Philippine House of Representatives in May and now becomes perhaps the “first congressman in the world in any nation to fight for a boxing championship title.”
Manny Pacquiao has now become arguably the most popular Filipino thus far. He has received many national and international awards and distinctions, too numerous to list here; including being featured on the TIME Asia magazine cover Nov. 16, 2009, as one of the most influential persons in the world. Not to be outdone, the Philippine postal system has printed his image on a stamp, making him the first athlete to be given that honor.

Why do Filipinos idolize their boxing champion?

In the May 19, 2009, report on GMA News.TV, ex-president Arroyo said “she depends on Pacquiao to become an instrument of peace…, citing that his 'heart, valiance, dignity and love of God and of our country exemplify the indomitable and triumphant Filipino Spirit.
“'We are truly proud of Manny as he also champions the Filipino, inspiring the Filipino to dare to dream, and to realize that dream, and win over the challenges that came our way…'
“She added that Pacquiao, who has humble beginnings before becoming a multi-millionaire by winning many world titles in boxing, is proof that if one sets his heart in the right direction, chooses to serve a higher and nobler purpose, and puts God and country before self, then nothing is impossible to achieve.”

What does this Philippine phenomenon project internationally and into the future?

The Filipino people desperately hunger for a hero, for deliverance from all their woes, for one who can conquer big obstacles and problems and has the capability, power and great resources to hopefully make wide-ranging positive changes. The people of the rest of the world hunger for that type of hero as well. The present Philippine experience can simply be viewed as a reflection of the longings of this world's suffering and hopeless humanity.
Real hope for this world is coming, and it is going to be a reality, but not in the hands of any man. This world's increasing problems cannot be solved by any man or any giant conglomerate corporation or even the cooperative union of all the nations on this earth. (How much world peace and unity has the United Nations accomplished in the 65 years since its founding?)
Thankfully, in great love and mercy, a supernatural, majestic Messiah is sure to come to earth to give ultimate deliverance to all mankind and to solve all of our insurmountable problems. But His coming will not depend on collective human approval.

Question Whose Authority?

Printer-friendly version

Questioning authority has been a human activity for a long time. But have you ever wondered just whose authority should be questioned?

1968— The vehicle ahead of you in the university town traffic is a Volkswagen microbus that sputters and weaves away from the traffic light. Out the driver's window a whiff of odd-smelling, unhealthy smoke wafts its way back to your nostrils.
Psychedelic paintings of flowers, long-haired men and glazed-eyed girls bedeck the sides, but the item that catches your eye is the bumper sticker bearing the mantra of the college-age subculture of the hippie era: "Question Authority."
2005— The vehicle ahead of you in traffic is an old Volvo. It doesn't drive any straighter, but it doesn't sport the weird paintings of the driver's VW microbus of the '60s. Still the bumper sticker proclaims the same student-now-professor's motto: "Question Authority."
But just what do you mean, question authority?
"Question Authority" as a motto in the 1960s and today means to challenge traditional authority—of the government, corporate and religious "establishment" and particularly to question the authority of God and the Bible. For decades this philosophy has epitomized the dominant force within higher education and the culture of the bulk of America's and the rest of the world's universities. Increasingly, it has trickled down to secondary and even elementary schools.
Enter college or university and your mind and moral values will certainly face the onslaught of this aggressive mind-set. Enter the halls of higher academia and you enter a cultural and moral war zone.
How solidly grounded are you in the true culture of the Bible right now? How will you fare after four years of college? Want to obtain a useful education and remain spiritually strong? Then you'll need to get a different bumper sticker.
Hippies, sex and drugs
A portion of the 1960s and early 1970s youth viewed themselves as a generation in rebellion. They spawned acid rock music and all its subsequent versions as angry battle hymns for their rebellious mood, spirit and actions, including the antigovernment and anti-Vietnam War riots of the late '60s.
But another, darker rebellion fueled what came to be known as the hippie movement: the drug and sexual revolution. It forged acceptance within mainstream culture of the recreational use and abuse of mind-altering drugs—a cultural character of the youth of every decade since.
The sexual revolution was also called the "free-love movement" —but read "lust" for "love" to understand the real meaning. This rebellion attacked God's law of sexual morality. It gave us bad news galore: soaring divorce rates for those who bothered to marry, social acceptance of unmarried couples living together and the many miseries of multitudes of unwed single mothers.
Aided by the militant feminist movement and other dark forces in society, the hippie movement has brought us today to a frontal attack on traditional marriage and the social acceptance of virtually any form of sexual perversion.
This profound cultural sea change came from following a 1960s proverb: "Think for yourself and question authority." It was coined by American psychologist, author and advocate of the psychedelic drug and sex culture Timothy Leary, who provided the voice of the misguided, odious bumper sticker message.
The shapers and molders of today's college professors wanted their students to question all forms of traditional authority, but specifically to question the authority of the Bible and the existence of God.
The April 8, 1966, cover of Time magazine echoed this approach with what was then a shocking headline: "Is God Dead?" The cover article referenced the proclamation of late 19th-century philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, who adamantly proclaimed, "God is dead."
If you don't know who Nietzsche was, you will. He was perhaps the key foundational thinker for what became the hippie subculture and for much of higher education today. The "God is dead" thinking is the core of the "question authority" movement.
Think for yourself
When the politically correct educators in college culture today tell you to "think for yourself," be advised— they don't mean it. As a vertical thinker using your sure knowledge of God's existence and His law, if you thought for yourself, you would see right through their faulty arguments advocating all sorts of sinful behavior.
As the great King David of old sang to God in his youth: "You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. I have more understanding than all my teachers, for Your testimonies are my meditation" (Psalm:119:98-99).
Many of your teachers and professors view themselves as the enlightened ones and view you, the true Christian, as the gullible, shackled, restricted and foolish one. They have much to learn!
A blatant statement comes from a Web site of a 21st-century advocate for the nonbiblical, postmodern, liberal lifestyle. His claim for the course he teaches summarizes the bumper sticker only too well:
"In this course, we will explore challenges to authoritarianism and work towards the creation of the 'Question Authority Coalition and Education Project' . . . We will evolve new statements for public dissemination. We will leave the class prepared to soundly thrash the Bible thumpers while defending their freedom to be stoopid" (maybelogic.org).
But we must ask this: Who made this world's postmodern college professors boss? No one did. As rude a shock as it may be to many of them, they are not the governors of our morality, arbiters of our faith or the gurus of our biblically guided opinions.
There is One who is our "Boss"—and He died for our sins and the sins of our teachers and classmates to become that Boss—or Lord and Teacher (John:13:14-15). He has set you and me a perfect example—that we should think as He thought and do as He did.
The true values
As vertical thinkers, we strive to see things as God sees them. We shape our opinions with the objective truth of God's law and Word. Our motto could be expressed as "Recapture true values." And here is a basic list of key true values taught in the Bible that you will hear questioned and challenged during your higher education.
God is sacred. Atheistic evolution was a critical first step in creating a culture of sexual and behavioral abandon. Their thinking is: If there is no God, then there is no moral law, no evil and no guilt. In short—anything goes. A related concept, the practice of elevating "mother earth" or "the environment" to be virtually and actually worshipped, is also wrong. Yet that's exactly what many militant environmental activists do.
Human life is sacred— as clearly taught by the Sixth Commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus:20:13). Abortion and euthanasia are in direct conflict with divine law. Likewise, mankind is the only life form made in the image of God (Genesis:1:26-28). Thus, to elevate animal life to be equal in value to human life is wrong. Yet that's what militant animal rights activism stands for.
Marriage is sacred— as in one man married to one woman. In Christ's own words: "He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh' . . . Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew:19:4-5). Anything other than the divine formula for marriage is wrong.
Human sexuality is sacred— and that sexuality is to be expressed only in divinely sanctioned marriage, not before or outside of marriage. Sexual expression is expressly forbidden by God in any variant (1 Corinthians:6:18-20), except within the divine institution of marriage, and there He commands it (7:2-5)!
Divine law is sacred— and is called "holy and just and good" (Romans:7:12). Yet higher education "experts" ridicule God's law as evil, arbitrary and restrictive. And what do they propose as rules for society? Answer: Their own law of political correctness. But, we ask again, who made them boss so that they should get to make the laws? From where is their moral superiority over the rest of mankind?
Truth is sacred. As a prudent, dedicated and faithful young person, you are being set apart (sanctified) by the truth of God's Word (John:17:17). Truth is truly objective. But beware—today's philosophy of "postmodernism" says that truth is relative, that each person has his own "truth" and that each one's truth is as good as another's truth. Wrong!
So why is the truth of the Bible considered "stoopid" as compared to the postmodern professor's truth? It's like saying all men are created equal, but some are "more equal" than others!
The history of our time told 2,000 years ago
How does a culture lose its moral compass so completely? How can those paid to educate young minds so lose their grip on true wisdom and common sense? Answer: Question Authority—as in reject and deny divine authority.
God gave one great educator, Paul the apostle, the insight to chronicle long ago how a culture collapses. The last half of Romans 1 tells how people "suppress the truth in unrighteousness," and bring about a dark age of immorality (verses 18-32). Here is the step-by-step formula:
1. Deny the existence of God.
2. Deny the authority of God—say there is no objective moral law to tell right from wrong.
3. Make new gods of oneself and nature.
4. Promote "freedom" for any kind of sexual activity in opposition to marriage, which God created and established for our good.
5. Exert tyrannical ridicule and pressure on any who question the new, postmodern authority.
6. Suffer the consequences of sexually transmitted epidemics and the pain of murderous misery launched by nations with no moral conscience.
The result is that everybody does what is right in his or her own eyes. True values are categorically rejected. And today, leading this charge into an age of futility and tyranny is a devastating proportion of higher education. As this reprobate culture gains momentum, there will be only one solution. And that good news is the soon-coming, "vertical" event when Jesus Christ descends from heaven to salvage and save humanity!
Question whose authority?
In the meantime, you have an education to obtain and a life to live. Navigate your way through school via a close relationship with God through daily prayer and a clear knowledge of His law in your mind from the study of the Bible. Totally defeat false moral arguments with the power of divine authority and godly logic.
And when you see the next postmodern, professorial "Question Authority" bumper sticker, create a new one in your own mind: "Question Whose Authority?" Question theirs. VT
