Christopher Columbus and Jesus Christ

article by Jerold Aust

Have you ever heard that Christopher Columbus gave God the credit for his journey to the New World?

Source: courtesy of the Architect of the CapitolNotice what he later wrote in describing his efforts to find a new route to India:

"It was the Lord who put into my mind (I could feel his hand upon me) the fact that it would be possible to sail from here to the Indies. All who heard of my project rejected it with laughter, ridiculing me. There is no question that the inspiration was from the Holy Spirit . . .

"For the execution of the journey to the Indies, I did not make use of intelligence, mathematics or maps. It is simply the fulfillment of what Isaiah had prophesied . . . No one should fear to undertake any task in the name of our Savior if it is just and if the intention is purely for His holy service" (quoted by Bob Gingrich, Founding Fathers vs. History Revisionists: In Their Own Words, 2008, p. 17).

What Memory or Legacy Will You Leave Behind?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

by Janet Treadway

Funerals seem to be a time of reflection. It is a time to reflect on the memories of the person who died. You either have great memories of that person, or sadly, not so much!

It seems all the memories, of the deceased, come out at a funeral. The preacher seems to bring out the positives. Sad to say, sometimes it can be very hard to have good memories of some individuals. However, a funeral is not the time to be brutally honest about someone if their character was bad. But their character will not escape our memory. We all hold memories in our heart of an individual’s character, legacies that they left.

Funerals are also the place where reality hits us squarely in the face, reminding us of our appointment with death. For a moment we are forced to focus on death and the reality that we will not live forever. And yes, none of us will escape the ending of our physical life. In Genesis 3:19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

See All... it says, “By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return."

As we age, and death becomes more of a reality, we begin to focus on making a will. Deciding what material things we will leave behind and to whom. Having things in order when we die is love for our loved ones. But do we give it much thought as to what legacy, character or good memory we will leave behind? Material things fade away, but the legacy that you leave will transfer on to your children, friends, and those you have touched while you were alive.

So what memories will you leave behind, for people to reflect on when you die? And what legacy will you leave behind for your children to carry on and hand on to their children? This is an important question to ask if you want your children to be blessed.

It must start with your devotion to God. Your legacy begins in your heart and your response to God. Psalm 112:1-2 [1] Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

[2] His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

See All... reads, "How blessed is the man who fears the LORD, Who greatly delights in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth; the generation of the upright will be blessed."

The Ten Commandments -- which are not the “Ten Suggestions” or “Ten Opinions” -- is our blueprint for life in how to build good memories with our families, co-workers, neighbors, church, communities and most of all with God. “Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who finds great delight in his commands. His children will be mighty in the land; the generation of the upright will be blessed” (Psalm 112:1-2 [1] Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

[2] His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

See All... NIV).

And young people, it is not too early for you to give thought to the legacy you will leave behind. In Ecclesiastes 12:1Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them;

See All... it reminds us, “Don't let the excitement of youth cause you to forget your Creator. Honor him in your youth before you grow old and say, "Life is not pleasant anymore." Sadly, too often, a young person’s life is cut short for various reasons. God admonishes you to remember Him as you live your life because you will give an account for your actions.

Yes, what will people think of you at your funeral? What legacy will you leave your love ones? Here are two quotes to consider:

“Your story is the greatest legacy that you will leave to your friends. It’s the longest-lasting legacy you will leave to your heirs.” - Steve Saint

“Carve your name on hearts, not tombstones. A legacy is etched into the minds of others and the stories they share about you.” - Shannon L. Alder

Live a life that fears, loves, obeys and respects your Creator, God the Father. If you do this you will leave a great legacy for your family, friends, and neighbors -- and great will be your reward in God’s Kingdom.

The Early Church Was Not Communist - and Neither Was Jesus

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

article by Don Hooser, Tom Robinson

A common misunderstanding is that the early Church practiced communal socialism, which some believe based on what they read in the beginning chapters of Acts.

Source: iStockphotoNote Acts 2:44-45 [44] And all that believed were together, and had all things common;

[45] And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.

See All...: "Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need."

But this was a unique situation that didn't last very long. We later see that elderly widows were to be financially provided for by a common church fund only if they had no family members in the Church who could privately support them (1 Timothy 5:3-16 [3] Honour widows that are widows indeed.

[4] But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.

[5] Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.

[6] But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.

[7] And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

[8] But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

[9] Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man,

[10] Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.

[11] But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;

[12] Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.

[13] And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

[14] I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

[15] For some are already turned aside after Satan.

[16] If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.

See All...). Obviously, all members of the Church's congregations at this later time were not being provided for out of a common fund—only a select number in real need.

In considering Acts 2, we should note that Christians were being persecuted. Also, thousands of new believers, some from distant lands, had just been added to the Church at the Feast of Pentecost in Jerusalem.

No doubt many decided to remain in Judea at that time to learn more about their new faith and rely on one another through growing persecution rather than return to their homes far away. These people thus had an immediate need for food and lodging, and a voluntary pooling of resources took care of that.

The believers at the time felt extremely blessed, grateful, hospitable and generous. Many who had extra assets sold some of them to help finance the living expenses of others. The expression "all things in common" means this: "I love you, and therefore your needs are just as important to me as my own needs. I consider all that I have as being yours also."

However, keep in mind that they could not sell what they did not own. They were voluntarily selling some of their privately owned property so they could help others. This was charity, not communism. No one was compelled to sell his property, nor did anyone confiscate one's property or income to give it to others, as many governments do today.

Acts 4:32-35 [32] And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.

[33] And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.

[34] Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,

[35] And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.

See All..., which follows shortly after in time order, shows that the pooling of resources was still going on. The account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts 5:1-11 [1] But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

[2] And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.

[3] But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

[4] Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

[5] And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

[6] And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

[7] And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

[8] And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

[9] Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

[10] Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

[11] And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.

See All... adds further clarity. God did not execute judgment on these two for their refusing to share, but for their telling a lie to make themselves look good.

The apostle Peter asked Ananias, "While it [their possession] remained [unsold], was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?" The couple was not obligated either to sell their land or to give away the proceeds. Again, this was not communism or socialism.

The words of Jesus Himself should make it even clearer. In His parables of the workers in the vineyard in Matthew 20, He portrayed God as a vineyard owner paying different employees the same agreed-on amount even if they worked for less time.

The employees who worked longer thought it unfair. But the owner, representing God, replies to one: "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things?" (verses 13-15).

To the final question here, communists and socialists, and those with such leanings, would answer no —since in those systems the community or state decides. Jesus' statement, while figurative of spiritual principles, is nevertheless a ringing endorsement of both private ownership and free market exchange without wage control. He was certainly no communist—and neither were His followers.

World News and Trends: Russia allied with Cuba again?

article by Jerold Aust, John Ross Schroeder

What will the ties between Cuba and Russia mean for the nuclear state of Venezuela?

According to Jorge CastaƱeda, Mexico's former foreign minister and now a professor at New York University, "Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's surprising announcement in early August that his country would seek to 're-establish' ties with the Soviet Union's old allies in Havana stirred up excitement in many foreign newsrooms and raised eyebrows in a few foreign ministries around the world" ( Newsweek, Aug. 18, 2008).

We wonder why the surprise, since such a development would be in perfect keeping with the Russian Federation's foreign policy moves for the entire year.

The possibility of the Russian military using Cuba as a fueling station for its Bear bombers has been broached. These bombers are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Russia is also increasing its ties to Venezuela, with President Hugo Chavez having already bought between $4 and $6 billion of arms from the Russians, with an apparent deal to purchase $60 billion more in the next six years. We may well ask the question as to why Venezuela needs all those arms. (Source: Newsweek. )

Is There Life On Other Planets?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

NASA's Martian rover, Curiosity, has not detected anything to confirm possible life on Mars. What does the Bible tell us of the possibility of life on other planets?

[Darris McNeely] One of the oldest and most challenging questions that scientists have had in recent years: Is there life on other planets? All kinds of experiments and observations have taken place and continue to go on to answer this critical question. Are there other forms of life on any other planet besides what we know here on Earth?

There has been on the planet of Mars just within the last year or so a rover sent there by NASA called Curiosity, and it has been taking samples of soil and the atmosphere on the planet Mars in order to again learn more about the planet, but also to continue searching for an answer to this particular question. Now because of the presence, they thought, of certain levels of a particular gas, methane gas, which to them could indicate the presence of some type of microbial life on Mars, scientists were hopeful in recent weeks that the Curiosity rover would gain some detectable evidence of high levels of methane gas, which then would lead them to again perhaps a further conclusions or proof or closer to proof that perhaps some type of life was there because methane gas is normally given off by decaying bacteria or vegetation.

Well, just recently the rover's results that have come back to the scientists have indicated that the levels of methane gas to indicate any form of life there are pretty much not there. There's just not the level of gas there to indicate any type of life and no other means by which to determine this. So they're disappointed on that particular part of the discovery of what has taken place on Mars with this rover in recent days.

So, again, we're still asking the question, they are: Is there life on other planets? It's an interesting question. It will continue to fascinate scientists.

There is perhaps a bit of an indication in the Bible that might help us to understand and answer, to come to an answer, on this because as we understand what the Bible tells us about God and the creation and the unique creation of life on this Earth as God has created it. The Bible doesn't tell us everything scientifically that we would like to know. That it seems to be is left for science to discover. But what the Bible does tell us sometimes gives us indications of perhaps what the ultimate answer even to a question like this might be.

In Isaiah 45:18For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

See All... it says this from God, "For thus says the Lord who created the heavens, who is God, who formed the Earth and made it." Again a direct statement corroborated by Genesis 1:1In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

See All... that God formed the Earth and He made this planet. He's made all the other planets too, but this is the one that has life as we know it. "Who established it, who did not create it in vain, who," this God, "formed it to be inhabited."

Did you catch that? God formed Earth to be inhabited. Isaiah 45:18For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.

See All.... Could it be that this is God telling us that this planet, this one planet Earth has been formed to be inhabited by life and especially the highest form of life created by God in His creation of man? And so if we were to take that, then it's a step toward understanding what the Bible does eventually tell us and reveal very clearly as to the purpose of all life and especially human life created in the image of God.

The Bible does give us certain answers, and it's those answers that we can cling to as a foundation to understand and begin to reason our way toward other answers to other questions that in a sense are eternally there.

Healing a Breach in Our Lives

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

by Victor Kubik

Source: Photos.com

Is there any one among us who has not lived through some kind of a breakup? A friendship? A marriage? A family? A partnership? These breakups of important relationships can be very painful. They can leave gaping voids in our lives. Can they be healed?

For many of us, there exist broken relationships that we may yearn earnestly to fix, but, alas, they never seem to be mended. Left undone, they become the sad "irreconcilable differences" of our lives. On a larger scale, broken relationships can have a dire consequence. Frustrated or betrayed relationships collectively produce a chronicle of human experience that becomes a profound story of conflict. Left unchecked, this unsavory story can bring us literally to the brink of destruction. While there are many examples of this, the current unresolved situation in the Middle East is but one illustration of the human race dividing and becoming further and further estranged from within.

Is there hope of reconciliation in conflicts large or small? When it seems like nothing will ever change, can God bring us back together?

The answer, happily, is a resounding yes!

In my last column I wrote about the biblical Festival of Trumpets (observed this year on Sept. 5). If you did not see the last column, allow me to note again that this festival celebrates in advance the return of Jesus Christ and the miraculous resurrection of the dead. The powerful biblical symbolism cited in 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 [51] Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed,

[52] In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.

See All... briefly tells the story:

"Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (emphasis added throughout).

These ancient biblical Holy Days, which Jesus Christ and the original apostles observed as an example for us, portray a wonderful future for humanity! Ten days after the Festival of Trumpets there is another biblical festival to be observed (this year on Sept. 14) that is called the Day of Atonement (some refer to it as Yom Kippur). It commemorates "at-one-ment" with God, which is a holy reconciliation— a healing of a gaping spiritual void—between humanity and God. It is living personal prophecy for you and me—it pictures a global spiritual healing, a mass turning of mankind to a loving God. The apostle Paul describes this in Ephesians 2:13-21 [13] But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ.

[14] For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;

[15] Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace;

[16] And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby:

[17] And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh.

[18] For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

[19] Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;

[20] And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;

[21] In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord:

See All...:

"But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one, and has broken down the middle wall of separation…thus making peace, and that He might reconcile them both to God in one body through the cross…For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father."

I invite you to consider this critical biblical fact: There cannot be real peace until there is a true reconciliation of man to God. That will happen in the future, and it is happening right now! That wonderful spiritual reconciliation is miraculously occurring in the lives of many as they come to know the awesome power of making ourselves right with God. Once we have developed a powerful and reconciled relationship with God Almighty, then we can also heal broken human relationships and be reconciled personally here today!

Real reconciliation is sweet. If you've ever been able to forgive and be forgiven, it is truly a liberating experience. And I submit this to you: In order for this bitter world to have a chance of survival, forgiveness and reconciliation must be taught and practiced. Thankfully, it will be.

Jesus Christ repaired the breach between God and man through His selfless sacrifice for us. But that's only part of the story. I invite you to read the rest of the story for yourself from our Bible study aid God's Holy Day Plan: A Promise of Hope for Mankind . You can download it right here .

I love this biblical truth, and I would welcome your thoughts as you read more of it for yourself in your own Bible.

PS—My wife Beverly and I will shortly be traveling to Africa, where we will keep the biblical capstone of God's Holy Day season: the Feast of Tabernacles , which pictures the coming Kingdom of God. The United Church of God will be keeping this festival at many sites across the globe . Accordingly, the next column will be at the beginning of October. Until then, may God continue to bless your efforts to learn more about Him! (Ephesians 1:17-19 [17] That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

[18] The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,

[19] And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,

Has the World Order Changed?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

A month ago America was set to bomb Syria. That has changed. Now the US government is in shutdown. How does this impact its standing in the world?

[Darris McNeely] We're back in the Beyond Today studio after having taken a break for the Feast of Tabernacles . Many of us scattered around the country and some internationally. I left the country myself, and I unplugged from the web, and from news, and even from television for about 10 days. Coming back it's almost like being gone for a month or so to try to get back into the scheme of things.

One of the things that caught my attention this morning as I was looking at the headlines is a question about whether or not the world order has changed since September 1st, in the last 30 days, because of two events, one of which we've covered in earlier BT Dailies . The situation in Syria where President Assad allegedly used chemical weapons to attack his own peoples and the threat from the United States, President Obama to bomb Syria as a result of that, which led to an interesting scenario because once the President of the United States, Obama, said that, then he said, "I'm going to go to the Congress to get approval for it," which cast it in a little bit different light. And then because of some diplomatic maneuvering and slide of hand almost it seems, Russia got involved and they offered to broker a deal with Syria if they agreed to turn over their chemical weapons for a guarantee that America would not bomb them. Would they go along with that? America took that deal, took their threat off the table, and left allies kind of hanging out there wondering, "Well, what does this country really want?"

What had happened earlier, and I had covered this in an earlier daily was that even in Great Britain the Parliament would not support David Cameron's desire to join the United States and President Obama in any potential action against Syria. So a key ally, Britain, wouldn't engage with us . We left others kind of hanging, such as France, Israel, the state of Israel as well. And so again the question was has the world order changed with all of this taking place, and the power, the prestige of the United States among world nations?

One other thing has taken place now since coming back from our break within the last day now, the United States' government has shut down because of the intransigence of the executive branch, the President and Congress, not being able to come to a deal on the budget and the debt level. And so government shut down now has taken place. Non-essential services are going to be curtailed until they can reach some agreement. And this creates just an aura of dysfunction with the United States and the world scene as well because the government branches are arguing back and forth. Leaders cannot come to some diplomatic reason to compromise to keep essential services going, to keep the government operating, its bills being paid, and its credibility strong in the world. So these two events that have taken place in Syria and the strange set of circumstances, and now the government shut down in the United States. All of this within just the last 30 days. September 1st dawned with one viewpoint.

September went out with a few people asking some questions. Has the world order changed? And so we leave you with that as we watch this with the important matter that we do need to understand why these things are important on the world scene and to the United States and its role within the world and the stability of the current world order.

That's BT Daily . Join us next time.
