The Gay Agenda Coming to a School Near You

In 2007 a Massachusetts federal judge ruled that the gay agenda must be taught in public school, “ordering that it is reasonable, indeed there is an obligation, for public schools to teach young children to accept and endorse homosexuality” (Bob Unruh, “Judge Orders 'Gay' Agenda Taught to Christian Children,” WND.com, Feb. 24, 2007).
And it's happening: “An elementary school in Oakland, California, topped off its school year with a 'Pride Day' celebrating all types of families, including those in which the parents consider themselves to be lesbian, 'gay' bisexual, transgender or queer,” complete with indoctrinating lectures, videos and a sing-along (Leo Hohmann, “5-Year Olds Taught to Celebrate 'Queer Pride,” WND, June 16, 2014).
Again, it's not only in America. LifeSiteNews reports on Scotland: “While Scottish government draft guidelines currently allow teachers with moral objections to opt-out of certain aspects of the country's new sex-ed curriculum [such as teaching about gay marriage], several National Health Service boards have objected to the opt-out clause. They are also objecting to provisions allowing parents to opt their children out of the classes …
“Another NHS board warned against allowing parents too much influence over children, saying that the decision about whether to attend the classes should be left up to the students, even if their parents object” (Hilary White, “Teachers Cannot Opt Out of Teaching Gay 'Marriage' in School Sex-Ed Classes: Scottish NHS,” May 15, 2014, emphasis added throughout).
It's truly disturbing to read a recent report from the pro-family organization MassResistance titled “'GLBT' Teachers Conference in Boston Reveals Latest Plans to Push Homosexuality Even Further Into Schools. Well Organized, Fueled With Taxpayer Dollars” (May 13, 2014).
The report states: “GLSEN (Gay Lesbian and Straight Education Network) is the nation's largest homosexual and transgender activist organization working inside schools in all 50 states. It has set up 'gay straight alliance' student clubs (GSAs) inside thousands of high schools (and even some middle schools) across the country.
GLSEN pushes a wide range of psychologically penetrating homosexual and transgender programs and activities into the schools … It also directly organizes and trains teachers to integrate their techniques throughout the curriculum …
“In 2000, the Boston-area GLSEN Conference gained national outrage when MassResistance (then known as Parents' Rights Coalition) exposed the sickening … workshop which involved adults teaching young kids explicit sex acts.”
In this workshop students as young as 12 were given graphic instruction in homosexual sex acts by state employees. The Massachusetts Legislature, along with several U.S. corporations, continues to support the organization.
Some of the 2014 conference workshops for training teachers, administrators and activist students included how to start a “gay-straight alliance” in middle schools (for students aged 10-14!) and “Queering the Classroom” to provide “a safe environment for GLBTQ youth” and “a more comfortable, creative environment for all students.”
For those concerned about their children, it's highly disturbing to see a picture of a sign behind conference speakers that proudly proclaims, GLSEN: Making a Difference in K-12 Schools.”
No doubt this has had an effect—along with all the other forces pushing young people to accept and embrace homosexuality. “As evidence of a major cultural shift … [one family advocate] pointed to a recent poll by the Pew Research Center indicating a full 70 percent of Millennials (born in 1981 or later) support same-sex marriage.
“By contrast, 49 percent of those in Generation X [born between the early 1960s and 1980], 38 percent of Baby Boomers [born between 1946 and the early 1960s] and just 21 percent from the Silent Generation [born between late 1920s and 1945] support homosexual marriage” (Chelsea Schilling, “Claim: Christians Sin By Putting Kids in Public School,” WND, May 17, 2014).
In the Fort Worth, Texas, area, when discussion in a ninth-grade German class shifted to religion and homosexuality, as it often did, 14-year-old Dakota Ary turned to a friend and said “that he was a Christian and that 'being a homosexual is wrong' … [whereupon] Dakota was sentenced to one day of in-school suspension and two days of full suspension” (Starnes, p. 122).
This was in a classroom where the teacher's “world wall” had a picture of two men kissing that offended some students. “He told the students this is happening all over the world and you need to accept the fact that homosexuality is just part of our culture now,” said Liberty Counsel attorney Matt Krause (Starnes, p. 123).
The superintendent of Miami-Dade County Public Schools sought to evict a Baptist church renting space in one of their buildings because the congregation opposed homosexuality, stating that renting to those who hold such views “appears to be contrary to school board policy as well as the basic principles of humanity” and calling the eviction a “rejection of prejudice and intolerance” (quoted by Starnes, p. 81).
Students across Massachusetts were warned by a Department of Education directive to affirm transgender classmates. “And if little girls took issue with sharing a bathroom with a transgender boy [a boy claiming to be a girl], the state said those little girls could be punished” (p. 119).

What's Behind the Gay Agenda?

In most civilizations traditional marriage is considered a fundamental institution and the backbone of a stable society.
Yet today we're seeing one of the greatest attempts at social reengineering in history in the fight to uproot the definition of marriage to include same-sex partners. It threatens the very foundation of the traditional family already battered by the prevalence of premarital sex, unmarried couples living together and rampant divorce.
As most of our Good News readers know, we view trends and events in culture and society through the prism of the Bible, the revealed Word of God. When societal changes run contrary to biblical revelation, it's necessary for us to keep our readers informed of influences that are detrimental to their future and that of their families. So what's going on? What's behind the gay agenda that's sweeping in this dramatic change?

What is the gay agenda?

If you were to ask gay activists about their agenda, the vast majority would insist there is no such thing as a gay agenda. In fact, proponents instruct their followers that such terminology should be avoided. A good example can be found on the website of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) under “GLAAD Media Reference Guide—Offensive Terms to Avoid”:
“Offensive: 'gay agenda' or 'homosexual agenda'
“Preferred: Accurate descriptions of the issues …”
“Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are motivated by many of the same hopes, concerns and desires as other everyday Americans …
“Notions of a so-called 'homosexual agenda' are rhetorical inventions of anti-gay extremists seeking to create a climate of fear by portraying the pursuit of equal opportunity for LGBT people as sinister …”
So while the gay activists clearly have an agenda, they want to hide that fact by replacing the word “agenda” with more euphemistic terms.
But is it really sinister to provide an honest evaluation of what is really taking place?  The fact is, there is a gay agenda. Simply put, it's an organized effort to produce political, social and religious change within society that will lead to tolerating—and eventually accepting as normal—homosexual relationships.

Let's define our words

In this article, “gay” (or “lesbian,” if female) refers to one who is actively engaging in a homosexual lifestyle, indulging in sexual relationships and activity.
We are not using the word “gay” to refer to someone who merely has a homosexual attraction or leaning but does not act out on his or her temptations by engaging in sexual actions. This attraction or leaning is often labeled same-sex attraction, or SSA for short.
To understand the struggles of those with SSA who are sincerely trying to resist sexual temptations and who are trying to “be transformed” to follow “the perfect will of God” (Romans 12:2), please see “The Human Side of Homosexuality: From One Who Has Struggled “).

What drives the aggressiveness of the gay agenda?

Why is there is so much zeal—and at times militant rhetoric and actions—behind the gay agenda?
In part it's reactionary against the past. It's understandable that gays want to avoid persecution as severe as they once felt from some religious, social and political groups. They want to avoid this deeply painful treatment fraught with fear, isolation and ridicule.
Until recent years, many homosexuals felt publically scorned by some who view homosexual acts as the worst of sins—usually with little or no mercy shown.
But the apostle James points out that, spiritually speaking, if a person stumbles in one point of God's law, it's as if he is guilty of breaking all of it (James 2:10-11). And he warns that God will judge individuals as they judge others (James 2:13).
Another aspect, though, is that, as increasing numbers in society drift further from traditional values, they inevitably join ranks to push acceptance of them and their values by wider society. And the more gains they make, the more brazen they become in their efforts—even to the point of tearing down traditional values. The root of the problem, however, is ultimately spiritual, as we will later consider.    

Many organizations with specific plans

While not all homosexuals support the gay agenda or are actively involved in trying to redefine marriage, many gay organizations are involved, as Michael Brown points out in his 2011 book A Queer Thing Happened to America: And What a Long, Strange Trip It's Been.
As he documents, “There are well-funded, highly-motivated, sharply-focused gay activist organizations such as HRC [Human Rights Campaign] and NGLTF [National Gay and Lesbian Task Force] and PFLAG [Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays] and GLSEN [Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network] and GLAAD [Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation] and Lambda Legal—just to mention a few” (p. 40).
But, again, the activists would have us believe there's no such thing as a gay agenda!
Brown shows that many of these organizations have specific plans with targeted goals. These include creating visibility, increasing awareness and fostering community. To promote their agenda they utilize task forces, policy institutes, organizing and training programs and even an annual “Creating Change” conference (p. 37).
Later Brown categorizes some of the movements. “There is a gay revolution, a gay liberation movement, a plethora of gay activist organizations with clearly identified missions and goals, but no gay agenda … How can that be? …
“Ironically, when it comes to denying the existence of a gay agenda, there is 'immense unity' in the gay community. Why? It is because the denial of that agenda is part of the agenda … It must be a stealth agenda. Otherwise, its progress will be thwarted and its success greatly impeded, because the open, unambiguous, full disclosure of the goals and ramifications of the gay agenda would stop that agenda in its tracks” (pp. 42-43, emphasis added throughout).

How far have they come?

It's the view of many that the impact the gay agenda is having on society is a bellwether indicator of just how far society has morally degenerated and where it's ultimately headed.
The Los Angeles Times summarizes the growing impact in an article titled, “Gays May Have the Fastest of All Civil Rights Movements” (May 20, 2012).
The article notes that “attitudes toward gays and lesbians have changed so much in just the last 10 years that, as Gallup reported last week, 'half or more now agree that being gay is morally acceptable, that gay relations ought to be legal and that gay or lesbian couples should have the right to legally marry.' (In 1996, when Gallup first asked about legalizing same-sex marriage, 68% of Americans were opposed).”
In about a generation we have seen society transformed from considering homosexuality to be a psychological disorder to the point that those who do not accept or affirm homosexuality are themselves called homophobic and viewed as mentally abnormal!
Homosexual behavior, once considered morally wrong and outlawed in many countries and U.S. states, is now largely immune from public condemnation or even public criticism. And in some countries those who do criticize it face fines and/or imprisonment!
The term “tolerance” is now employed to mean the complete acceptance of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) lifestyles and ideology—in the family, in the workplace, in education, in media and in religion. Those who do not accept this definition of “tolerance” are often labeled intolerant.
Today the term “diversity” means more than seeking women and minorities to join a company or organization. It often includes embracing homosexuality, LGBT behavior and showing solidarity with the gay agenda.
The gay agenda, along with the sexual revolution that began half a century ago, has transformed America's moral standard that was once based on biblical values to one that accepts as commonplace the homosexual lifestyle and many other biblically condemned behaviors.
Ironically, while gay activists demand tolerance toward themselves, they are quick to slam anyone who dares to disagree with them as intolerant, biased, bigoted or homophobic. In demanding their “rights,” they not only demand that everyone else recognize their self-proclaimed rights, but they actually strip away the freedoms and rights of those who disagree with them and who are standing up to their agenda.

Growing support at many levels

This powerful political and cultural current is explosively impacting society. Due in part to the activists' hype and that of the media, most Americans think the size of the homosexual community is seven or eight times larger than it actually is. The title of the most recent Gallup poll on the subject explains: “U.S. Adults Estimate That 25% of Americans Are Gay or Lesbian” (Gallup.com, May 27, 2011).
The actual number, confirmed by surveys going back several decades, is 2 to 4 percent—admitted even by researchers supportive of the gay-rights movement.
In recent years the gay-rights movement has changed the target of its agenda. Thirty years ago gay activists made little effort to try to change the definition of marriage. But today this change is central to the gay agenda in most of the Western world.
And they have gained considerable political support. American President Barack Obama's policies have consistently favored the expansion of gay rights. On June 29, 2009, the 40th anniversary of what established gay pride month, Obama welcomed 300 gay activists to the White House, stating, “Welcome to your White House,” assuring them that their goals would be realized in his administration.
Another example is his pushing for the 2011 ending of restrictions on homosexuals serving openly in the U.S. military, a practice which had been in existence since the time of George Washington.
Last summer U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta went so far as to give a thank-you speech for homosexual, lesbian and bisexual military service members as part of the Pentagon's first-ever celebration of gay pride month.
Last spring Obama became the first sitting president to publicly declare support for the legalization of same-sex marriage. This was followed by the Democratic Platform Committee unanimously endorsing it for the 2012 presidential elections—a first for a major-party platform.
More than a year ago the Obama administration ordered the Justice Department to halt any legal defense for the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was passed by Congress in 1996 to preserve marriage as a union between one man and one woman.
Since DOMA passed, 42 states have instituted their own support-of-marriage acts, defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. This helps ensure that children, the next generation of taxpayers, grow up in a stable family unit. So far, eight states have approved gay marriage by legislative or court-ordered action—though none by popular vote of citizens.

Biological differences

Why is there so much sound and fury coming from so many quarters demanding a change to the definition of marriage?
One reason is that the gay agenda has successfully changed the public focus away from the fundamental biological difference between same-sex couples and heterosexual partners. They may be able to fool some people some of the time, but they cannot fool God. There is simply no way to magically erase the inherent biological differences.
Think about it! If everyone took up the homosexual lifestyle, populations would begin to rapidly dwindle and the human race would eventually die out. It should be evident to everyone that, barring some artificial outside assistance, biological procreation is only possible in heterosexual relationships.
God designed marriage to provide a husband and wife the opportunity to raise their own biological children in a caring, balanced family environment conducive for developing their children's personal identity (Genesis 1:28).
God “seeks godly offspring” and hates anything that undermines or destroys marriage because of the harm that creates (Malachi 2:14-16). The inherent contradiction between what God designed marriage relationships to be and same-sex marriage cannot be changed by altering the definition of marriage or carefully couching arguments to make alternative lifestyles seem more acceptable.

How far will they go?

It appears that those pushing the gay agenda won't give up until the definition of marriage is changed in law and common language and their influence is felt in every aspect of society, as Brown documents:
“Children in elementary schools will be exposed to the rightness and complete normality of homosexuality, bisexuality, and transgender expression … Opposing views will be branded as dangerous and homophobic, to be silenced and excluded from the classroom. Middle schools, high schools, and colleges will go out of their way to encourage both the celebration of homosexuality and deep solidarity with gay activism” (p. 49).
In addition, Brown believes that pressure will build for American businesses to openly embrace every aspect of these biblically immoral practices to the point that employees who resist or refuse to follow suit will be dismissed.
Pastors and religious groups teaching that homosexual behavior is immoral will increasingly find themselves being accused of “hate speech.” In some countries ministers have already been convicted and fined for simply teaching the biblical truth on the subject.

Lasting impressions on our children

When you realize where their agenda is headed, it's extremely disconcerting to see gay activists targeting younger and younger children—the most impressionable among us. American schools have become bastions of homosexual and transgender activism beginning as early as kindergarten.
Brown provides an example of the efforts of one homosexual advocacy organization over the past two decades: “This is the day of the 'queering of elementary educations' —to quote the title of a highly-praised book —and much of this is due to the influence of GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Educational Network (pp. 87-88).
GLSEN wants homosexuality and transgenderism completely normalized—and even encouraged, celebrated, and nurtured—in the educational system … Gay-inspired curricula and gay-affirming educational programs are now everywhere today” (p. 89).
In addition, GLSEN offers a comprehensive training program for teachers called GLSEN Lunchbox 2, which is designed for educators to use beginning at the kindergarten level. It comes with a training video, a 141-page trainer's manual, game cards with gay or transgender historical figures and terminology cards designed to teach a variety of sexual lifestyle alternatives.
It offers activities designed to subvert the family, including one titled “Deconstructing Definitions of Family.”  Brown summarizes, “In short, say goodbye to male and female, to masculinity and femininity, to 'biological sex,' and say hello to genderqueer, gender non-conforming, transgender, and transsexual” (p. 95).
In the United States GLSEN also sponsors the rapidly growing Gay Straight Alliances (GSAs) in middle schools, high school and college campuses. There are now more than 4,000 student clubs on campuses, and the number continues to grow rapidly.
These do far more than just provide a “safe place” for homosexual, bisexual and transgender students to hang out. They have become a springboard for pro-homosexual advocacy. They seek to alter curriculum and silence dissent. They push for the full acceptance of homosexuality in schools.
And they encourage children as young as 11 years old to declare themselves gay in GSA meetings, often without the knowledge of their parents.

Civil rights cover-up

All these blatantly aggressive efforts are a direct assault on the God-designed family unit. And they are cleverly hidden under the banner of “equal opportunity” or “civil rights.”
Activists even guide the media in how they want their agenda positioned. The GLAAD Media Reference Guide, quoted earlier, points out the terms they expect to be used or not used:  “Offensive: 'special rights.' Preferred: 'equal rights' or 'equal protection.'”
But is the real motive behind their agenda simply to gain the same rights as others?
In most states gays already can gain most if not all the rights heterosexual marriage partners have by voluntarily entering into a private, informal domestic partnership agreement specifying their mutual obligations. And they can even hold private religious marriage ceremonies.
Likewise, nothing prohibits private companies from offering benefits to same-sex partners of their employees. In fact, the majority of Fortune 500 companies already do.
A deeper question is: Does it make logical sense to form a special class of people based purely on sexual orientation and then equate it to a race or ethnic group's push for civil rights?
There are at least three reasons that the two are not a legitimate comparison.
First, homosexuals (of both sexes), bisexuals and the transgendered are not all united by having the same sexual attractions—each subgroup is different.
Second, the black civil rights movement was united around those who had the same skin color, which does not change. On the other hand, the LGBT community was artificially linked together based solely on sexual orientations, which can change over time.
Third, there is no moral difference between being black or white (or yellow or red). But romantic attractions and sexual behavior often have moral (or immoral) qualities.

The underlying moral issues

Society places way too much emphasis on sex, and gay activists are trying to convince everyone that you can have it your way, their way or any way.
One of the critically destructive forces behind this gay agenda is the idea that everything is malleable to accommodate changes in society. But no matter what the changing vagaries of fickle public opinion, God's principles of right and wrong do not change (see Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).
God set certain natural laws in motion at creation that were designed to govern and support humanity's existence on earth. His Word tells us that sex was designed exclusively for only one relationship—that between a man and a woman in marriage.
Because homosexual activity, premarital sex and adultery are all outside of marriage, all are violations of God's instructions. These sins exact negative penalties, whether a person understands God's laws or not. And unless they are repented of, the ultimate consequence is death (Romans 6:23).
The Bible contains specific passages condemning both male and female homosexual behavior (Leviticus 18:22, Leviticus 18:24-30; Romans 1:24-27; 1 Corinthians 6:9; 1 Timothy 1:9).
When it comes to sexual relations, the only two options affirmed for Christians are God-designed marriage or abstinence (no sexual relationships).
It can be a struggle for those who desire to leave the gay lifestyle (again, see “The Human Side of Homosexuality: From One Who Has Struggled “). And like other human temptations, it may be a battle they fight all their lives. But God knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations (2 Peter 2:9).
And it is encouraging to see there is clear biblical evidence that God can help change wrong behavior—including homosexuality and sodomy, as some of the Corinthian church members were able to do (1 Corinthians 6:9-11).

Marriage cannot be redefined

In law and society, marriage touches every aspect of life from birth to death. Since God is the Creator of human beings and marriage, only He has the right to define what the marriage relationship should be.
Human beings were created with a deep need to bond to others. And there is no deeper bonding relationship among human beings than the one that can be achieved between a husband and wife. Eve was created so that Adam would not have to live alone (Genesis 2:18). The two were directed to be fruitful and multiply through the only physical union capable of producing new life (Genesis 1:28).
The institution of this marital union was one of the very first actions God took to establish the basic structure of human society (Genesis 2:24; Genesis 4-6; Ephesians 5:31). It is a natural union and a divine institution ordained of God.
Like no other institution, it can provide material and emotional support as well as a sense of safety and love for as long as both husband and wife are alive (Romans 7:2).
Our loving Father gave us the institution of marriage and the blessing of family so that we might learn to love one another as He loves us (Ephesians 5:25-33). Because of the importance of this divine institution, Jesus Christ stood up to those who wanted to adapt marriage to the changing whims of society and brought them back to God's original instructions regarding the sanctity of marriage (Mark 10:1-12).
Notice Christ's instructions: “But from the beginning of the creation, God 'made them male and female.' 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Mark 10:6-9).

Sign of the times

What this all adds up to is that the gay agenda has become one of the greatest attempts at social reengineering in history. The fight to uproot the definition of marriage to include same-sex partners is just one more social trend threatening to further undermine the very foundation of the family unit and the stability of society itself.
The sad reality is that our society is continuing headlong down the moral spiral prophesied for the end time before Jesus Christ's return (2 Timothy 3:1-7, 2 Timothy 3:13). God's Word says the family will continue to be under assault as we approach the end of this age.
Perhaps not so coincidentally, Jesus Christ compares the days leading up to His second coming to the destruction of Sodom in Lot's day (Luke 17:28-30). Thanks in part to the gay agenda, our society is headed in the same direction. Nearly all the people of Sodom had turned away from God's way of life (Genesis 18:16-22). There were not even 10 righteous people to be found in the city. The men of the city threatened to sexually violate the two angelic messengers God sent to warn Lot to leave before He destroyed the city (Genesis 19:1-29; Jude 7).
While Lot and his family were in some ways negatively influenced by the evils of the society around them, he is called “righteous Lot” (2 Peter 2:7). He felt tormented, oppressed and distressed by the immoral and degrading ways of those around him (2 Peter 2:7-8).
We must remain vigilantly on guard against letting a morally degenerating society pull us down with it—as Christ warned: “And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold” (Matthew 24:12).
Thankfully, our loving and merciful Savior will return to heal the hearts and minds of all humanity (Isaiah 9:6-7). He will save mankind from complete depravity and self-destruction (Matthew 24:21-22). He will establish a healthy, wholesome and happy world. May God speed that day!

Is it true that Jesus never condemned homosexuality?

[Steve Myers] A question came up about homosexuality. And one of the points some people try to make is the fact that Jesus never condemned homosexuality. They’ll look through the New Testament and say, “He never said anything.” In fact, they’ll point to the Apostle Paul and say that he was very hard on homosexuals. In fact, one of the past BT Dailies , we talked about several sections in Romans and in 1 Corinthians–some of Paul’s writings–where he condemns the act of homosexuality.
Now, is this true? Is it really true that Jesus never said anything about homosexuality? It’s not true. It is not true–there’s a basic misunderstanding that many people have. They forget what the Bible actually says.
If you were to go back to the book of Leviticus, it shows very clearly some interesting insight into this behavior. In Leviticus 18:22 the Bible says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination.” Now we read that and people will say, “Well, that’s Old Covenant. That’s Old Testament. That doesn’t apply to us today.” Well, is that true?
Well a couple of pages over, it says in verse 13 of chapter 20, “If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination” (Leviticus 20:13). Now if you were to check this out, you’d see very clearly who’s actually doing the talking? It’s not Moses. It’s not any man. But it’s the Lord. If you look at the beginning of chapter 18, the beginning of chapter 19, the Lord spoke (Leviticus 18:1 and Leviticus 19:1). And so very clearly, who is it? It’s the Lord.
Now, here’s the question: who is the Lord? And that’s the vital question that everyone has to answer when it comes to what the Bible says and whether or not Jesus said anything about homosexuality. You know where we find the key? The key is found over in 1 Corinthians. If you look at 1 Corinthians it is very clear who the Lord is. 1 Corinthians 10:4, it says very clearly the Lord that spoke to Moses–notice what the Apostle Paul says under inspiration. He says, “I don’t want you to be unaware that all our fathers were under the cloud.” Verse 2 of chapter 10 of 1 Corinthians, “All were baptized into Moses and passed through the sea” (1 Corinthians 10:2).
Now, we know that story of the Israelites coming out of Egypt. Well, who was the God that was with the Israelites at that time? Who was God, the Lord, that spoke to Moses that spoke to the people? Well it says in verse 4, “All drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual Rock, which followed them and that Rock was Christ” (1 Corinthians 10:4).
So, you see what the Bible says is the God of the Old Testament is the One who became Jesus Christ. So, the Lord that spoke homosexuality is an abomination in the Old Testament was not some mean, old God that was different than Jesus Christ. It was the One who became Jesus Christ. Hebrews 13:8 is so clear. It says Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever. And if you fast forward to the end of the book, go to the book of Revelation. Revelation 22:14-15, it says, “Blessed are those who do His commandments. They have a right to the tree of life.” They have a right to eternal life. But verse 15 says, “Outside are dogs, sorcerers, sexual immoral, and murderers and idolaters. “
So Christ is consistent. The Bible is consistent. God loves the sinners, but He hates the sin. And that’s the problem. So, He calls all to repentance. He doesn’t wish that any would perish–but that all would come to repentance. That’s God’s hope for all of us.
So Jesus Christ is consistent. Jesus Christ did speak clearly–not only about homosexuality, but He talked about lying and murdering. Look at the big ten . They are so clear. And so never forget that. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Suddenly, immigration is becoming a bigger issue throughout the Western world. Governments around the globe are very concerned about potential problems that massive immigration may bring.
The American state of Arizona, which borders Mexico, recently passed a law authorizing police to inquire of people they've stopped for other legitimate reasons if they are in the United States legally, should there be sufficient reason to suspect otherwise, and to ask for proof of their legal status in such case. Illegal immigrants have contributed to mounting crime, increasing health and educational costs and other problems in the state.
Most of Arizona's citizens support the law, though some organizations outside the state have announced boycotts, which could cost it a great deal. Even the federal government is considering filing lawsuits to prevent the law from being implemented.

Immigration reshaping Western countries

A car bomb placed in New York City's Times Square on May 1, 2010, was the 11th attempted terrorist act in the city of New York since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The bomb—which, thankfully, failed to go off as planned—raised some deeply troubling questions about even legal immigration.
How could a young Pakistani immigrant who lived the American dream possibly want to kill hundreds of his fellow citizens? The United States and other Western democracies, still coming to terms with radical Islam, are finding it hard to fathom. It just doesn't fit into the multicultural ideal!
France, Belgium, Italy and other European countries are passing laws to block Islamic women from wearing full veils in public. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel is insisting the country's large Turkish population should assimilate, while the Turkish prime minister insists they should have their own separate schools to protect their Islamic identity.
Meanwhile, a Danish cartoonist whose cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad led to riots in a number of countries was threatened by an ax-wielding intruder, and a Swedish cartoonist was physically attacked by protesters shouting “Allah is great!” as he gave a lecture on free speech. Muslims insist that freedom of speech, long cherished in the West, has its limits.
In Britain, the issue of immigration may have cost Prime Minister Gordon Brown the recent election. When a 65-year-old supporter of his own party approached him during the campaign and expressed concern about all the immigrants from Eastern Europe flowing into her neighborhood, Mr. Brown was overheard in his car describing her as a “bigoted woman.” Leaders clearly don't like the sensitive issue of immigration being brought up.
But it's not going to go away.

Majorities becoming minorities in their own land

People are feeling increasingly threatened by the changing demographics in their own nations. The ethnic composition of Western countries is rapidly altering due to massive immigration in the last few decades. The United States alone took in 10 million more immigrants in the seven years following Sept. 11, 2001—many of them from countries rife with radical Islamists. To many citizens, this just doesn't make sense.
An increasing number of Americans are aware that these demographic changes will lead to a majority nonwhite population in their own lifetimes. How they handle this will determine the country's future. As Time magazine put it: “How the current majority reacts to its incipient minority status is the most crucial socio-demographic issue facing the country” (Gregory Rodriguez, “The White Anxiety Crisis,” March 22, 2010, international edition).
In an amazing break from tradition, many Western nations changed their immigration policies after World War II and welcomed millions of people from the Third World. Even the United States, often deemed a cultural “melting pot,” had an immigration policy prior to 1965 that favored maintaining the racial status quo.
The late Senator Edward Kennedy's 1965 immigration bill deliberately changed earlier policy, welcoming a big influx of immigrants from the world's poorer nations. At the time, Americans were assured it would not alter the ethnic mix and social fabric of their nation.
Now it's evident this assurance was false. One could easily make the argument that the election of America's first African-American president would not have happened without the reality of changing demographics.

Immigration leading to unrest

The issue of immigration was briefly discussed on NBC's Chris Matthews Show on May 9, 2010.
During the program, John Heilemann of New York magazine observed: “We're going through one of these once-in-a-century transformations that cuts across a lot of different things—cultural change, there's big demographic change, there's big economic change, and technological change, and it makes people really nervous. It's been going on for about 15 years in America—the sense of anxiety, the sense we've lost control of our lives.”
Also on the show was Cynthia Tucker, a columnist with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who offered this perspective: “I've always thought that this great melting pot or salad, however you want to describe this diverse nation, works as long as the economy is good, as long as the pie is growing and every American believes he or she has an opportunity to get a piece of that pie, we're all pretty happy.”
However, now that the economy is not doing so well, the United States could be in for a more stressful time when it comes to assimilating the various ethnic groups that now live in the country.
The same applies elsewhere, of course. Some of the eurozone countries are on the brink of financial collapse due to decades of overspending. Severe government spending cuts are inevitable. The nations have already seen unemployment rise. Without jobs, many are already blaming immigrants for their situation.
In the latest election in Britain, the anti-immigrant British National Party almost tripled the share of the vote it received in the 2005 election. In fact, anti-immigrant parties are seeing growing support in a number of European countries.
The perceived threat applies on several different levels.

Security a growing concern

Besides feeling that their way of life is threatened, both culturally and economically, people are also becoming more concerned about security as radical terror movements increasingly recruit homegrown terrorists. Commenting on the recent attempted bombing in Times Square, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies professor Fouad Ajami wrote the following in the May 10, 2010, Wall Street Journal:
“'A Muslim has no nationality except his belief,' the intellectual godfather of the Islamists, Egyptian Sayyid Qutb, wrote decades ago. Qutb's 'children' are everywhere now; they carry the nationalities of foreign lands and plot against them. The Pakistani-born Faisal Shahzad [who set up the car bomb] is a devotee of Sayyid Qutb's doctrine, and Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, was another.
“Qutb was executed by the secular dictatorship of [Egyptian President] Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1966. But his thoughts and legacy endure. Globalization, the shaking up of continents, the ease of travel, and the doors for immigration flung wide open by Western liberal societies have given Qutb's worldview greater power and relevance. What can we make of a young man like Shahzad working for [the cosmetics company] Elizabeth Arden, receiving that all-American degree, the MBA, jogging in the evening in Bridgeport, then plotting mass mayhem in Times Square?
“The Islamists are now within the gates. They fled the fires and the failures of the Islamic world but brought the ruin with them. They mock national borders and identities. A parliamentary report issued by Britain's House of Commons on the London Underground bombings of July 7, 2005, lays bare this menace and the challenge it poses to a system of open borders and modern citizenship.
“The four men who pulled off those brutal attacks, the report noted, 'were apparently well integrated into British society.' Three of them were second-generation Britons born in West Yorkshire. The oldest, a 30-year-old father of a 14-month-old infant, 'appeared to others as a role model to young people.' One of the four, 22 years of age, was a boy of some privilege; he owned a red Mercedes given to him by his father and was given to fashionable hairstyles and designer clothing…Two of the four, rather like Faisal Shahzad, had spent time in Pakistan before they pulled off their deed.
“A year after the London terror, hitherto tranquil Canada had its own encounter with the new Islamism. A ring of radical Islamists were charged with plotting to attack targets in southern Ontario with fertilizer bombs. A school-bus driver was one of the leaders of these would-be jihadists.
“A report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service unintentionally echoed the British House of Commons findings. 'These individuals are part of Western society, and their “Canadianness” makes detection more difficult. Increasingly, we are learning of more and more extremists that are homegrown. The implications of this shift are profound'” (“Islam's Nowhere Men: Millions Like Faisal Shahzad Are Unsettled by a Modern World They Can Neither Master nor Reject,” emphasis added).

Prophecy warned of consequences for national sins

The modern descendants of the ancient Israelites include many of the nations that make up today's Western world. In Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28, God promised tremendous physical blessings if they would obey Him, but He also warned them of the dire consequences of disobedience. The promised blessings for obedience are awe-inspiring; the assurances of punishment for sins are deeply troubling.
These chapters make for sobering reading when we consider trends in recent years. In Deuteronomy 32, verse 25 warns of “terror within”—a prophecy clearly being fulfilled now, with an even greater increase in the problem likely still to come.
The apostle Paul spoke of how God created “from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings” (Acts 17:26 Acts 17:26And has made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

Of course, this passage does not mean that correctly controlled immigration is inherently wrong, seeing that when the Israelites left Egypt the door was opened for a certain number of non-Israelites to dwell among them. However, they had to leave their culture behind and abide by the same laws God gave the Israelites. We are now learning the negative consequences of the multicultural society that has been propagated for the last 50 years.
Mixing cultures, and especially religions, can be volatile! We should have known that before the change in immigration laws just by looking at history and at other societies where mixing religions has led to serious tension and conflict.
The people of Europe feel particularly threatened. With higher population densities than the United States and closer proximity to the volatile Middle East, many West European nations have significantly high Muslim populations. Add to this Europe's low birthrate in contrast to the high Islamic birthrate, and the potential for violent conflict only increases.
And as we've seen, it's not just security that is threatened. Economics also play a major role. God Himself warned of serious consequences for the native peoples as a result of immigration: “The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail” (Deuteronomy 28:43-44 Deuteronomy 28:43-44 43 The stranger that is within you shall get up above you very high; and you shall come down very low. 44 He shall lend to you, and you shall not lend to him: he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail.

In other words, the strangers—those of foreign cultures and religions—will end up on top, in control and in time possibly dictating a way of life foreign to the indigenous population.
This is, of course, exactly what happened when European settlers started arriving in North America, Australia and elsewhere—they ended up on top and in control, displacing the native populations. Now, two or three centuries later, they are the ones losing control to newer arrivals.
Immigration trends and birthrates show that sometime in this century the peoples who currently dominate most of the Western nations will be minorities in their own lands. Whatever you may think of the ethnic mix, the reality is that significant change is underway, and it's threatening no less than the future of Western civilization. GN

So that's their excuse—they've got to have another cigarette, cigar, pipe, joint or whatever inhaled hot poison. Never mind that St. Peter isn't in heaven because people don't go to heaven when they die (request or download a free copy of Heaven and Hell: What Does the Bible Really Teach? for details).



In fact, "heaven" is coming to earth in the person of Jesus Christ—soon. Those who are forgiven and obedient will be resurrected to an incredible eternal life in the Kingdom of God like they've never dreamed of before. But there will be a rule there—no smoking allowed.



This rule may make the currently popular, politically correct, antismoking crowd happy, but they've likely got some issues they'll have to deal with too. So what is the deal about smoking, whether tobacco, marijuana or whatever? Is it a sin?



Not food, not drink



When God made man and woman, He gave them dominion over the earthly creation that He had actually made for them in the first place. Then He clearly told them which animals they should use for food and which they should consider unclean and, thus, not food (Leviticus 11).



He gave man all the plants on earth. Some were for animal food, some for human food and some for sheer beauty and other worthy uses. God also provided man liquids to drink like water, milk, teas, juices (the fermented variety only in careful moderation), etc.



Tobacco, however, is neither a human food nor drink. In fact it's poisonous. Only a senseless person would try to eat or drink it. And only a senseless person would try to inhale its smoke while it burns only inches in front of his or her nose! The whole idea of smoking is ludicrous. But ludicrous, crazy ideas have long been popular with a humanity that refuses to follow God's way of living.



I could tell you how bad smoking is for your health. Even King James I of England could tell you that. He called it "a custome lathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmeful to the braine, dangerous to the lungs, and the black stinking fume thereof, nearest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomlesse" ( Counterblaste to Tobacco , 1604).



I could tell you that smoking and smokeless tobacco cause cancer. But that's been done before. "A mid-eighteenth- century detractor who described tobacco as a narcotic akin to opium, warned that snuff-taking was liable to cause the loss of the sense of smell, addiction, nasal tumors and cancer" ("Tobacco," The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances, 1998).



I could tell you all that, but I won't because you already know the scientific reasons why the weed is bad for you. Yet did you just notice how tobacco use causes the loss of smell—and must dull the sense of taste so closely linked with it? Ever wondered why so many smokers frequent restaurants not noted for excellent or even mediocre cuisine? They can't taste or smell well enough to tell the difference. Who wants to go through life with a tongue and nasal cavity that's been cured like a ham in a smokehouse?



Smoking is against God and neighbor



Jesus listed for us the two greatest commandments of all:



1. Love God with all your heart and being, and



2. Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39 [37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

[38] This is the first and great commandment.

[39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Does smoking show love toward God? No.



God considers your personal, human body as sacred. "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit . . . and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?



See All...). Smoking and chewing tobacco both damage the body. And there is no reason for using tobacco products in these ways except for the temporary gratification of self (and ruining of the self in the long run, which God does not want). That lack of respect and honor for what God calls the temple of His Spirit is itself a sin.



Furthermore, the slavish-addiction aspect of smoking elevates it above God in one's motivations, as explained below.



Does smoking show love toward neighbor? No.



Sitting there sucking hard on a cigarette, pipe or cigar is an action of fundamental selfishness (though it will ultimately hurt oneself). It harms your neighbor, while God says, "Love does no harm to a neighbor" (Romans 13:10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.



See All...). Smoking harms both by the unhealthy effects of secondhand smoke and causing discomfort by selfishly fouling the air for everyone in the vicinity.



Summary: Smoking is sinful because it is self-indulgent, slavishly self-destructive, neighbor-harming and, in all these respects, God-ignoring. "Therefore, to him who knows to do good [as in to not smoke] and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Smoking is a god

Needing new and never-ending supplies of nicotine slaves to maintain their profits, tobacco companies specifically target teens and young adults as start-up smokers. But aside from that, why does that age group start smoking?



"My friends smoke." "I just wanted to try it." "I thought it was cool." "My parents smoke." One of the biggest reasons teens start to smoke is peer influence. Over 70 percent of Canadian teens say that having friends who smoke and/or peer pressure is the number one reason for starting to smoke (www.lung.ca ).



Nicotine slaves feel guilty smoking alone; they want converts to make them feel comfortable. And wherever there is a smoking evangelist, there are the foolishly willing converts. But why do these peers smoke in the first place? And what can you do about it?



Tobacco, marijuana and about any smokable drug can cause body and brain addiction, as mentioned earlier. But becoming an addict (to anything) involves choosing, more and more, to become subservient, slavelike, worshipful and groveling to the thing. That means making the thing (in this case smoking) more important than God in your life.



Elevating any other motivating factor in life before the true God is bad news. It's called idolatry. It's called breaking the very first of the great and awesome Ten Commandments. Make no mistake, smoking breaks Commandment One. So, again, smoking is a sin. What you can do about that is never start smoking or, if you have been smoking, quit.

A small defense of tobacco



Is there anything good about tobacco? Yes, indeed. There are some medicinal uses like poultices but the best thing about the weed is that it can defend other plants from insects. "A water/nicotine mixture has been used as an insecticide since 1746" (http://faculty.washington.edu ).



Tobacco is a bug spray! Why in the world would people want to smoke, chew or snuff bug spray?



God knew what He was doing. He didn't make tobacco products for food or drink. Their use certainly violates the principle of God's perfect and divine law. Sin will not enter the eternal, fabulous Kingdom of God . It's frightening to think that awesome, incredible, human potential could be completely missed because someone stubbornly insisted on continuing to inhale bug spray. VT

The gay agenda is steadily gaining ground in Western nations, with same-sex marriage finding acceptance. But what does the Bible say—and why? And what's at the root of same-sex attraction?



The U.S. Supreme Court's June decision striking down state laws banning homosexual acts between consenting adults was the latest victory in the cultural war between those advocating full acceptance of homosexuality in public life and those opposed on various grounds.



It followed decisions announced earlier in the month from Britain that a law banning the promotion of homosexuality in schools would be repealed and a stunning announcement from Canada that an Ontario appeals court had ruled that refusing same-sex couples the rights of marriage was discriminatory.



A similar decision is now pending in the Massachusetts Supreme Court, with major implications for the other 49 American states —which are constitutionally obligated to recognize the actions of all other states. With two European countries already allowing it, and several others allowing civil unions, same-sex marriage is a major and growing issue.



Nor is this only a secular issue. In August the U.S.-based Episcopalian Church shocked many of its members by approving its first openly homosexual bishop and giving local dioceses the option of deciding whether to perform same-sex marriages.



How did marriage begin?

Marriage is a constant theme throughout the Bible, as we might expect it to be. After all, the Bible is largely about human relationships, and none is so fundamental as marriage.



At the beginning, when God created Adam, the first man, He said: "It is not good that man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.



See All...). God created for him a female companion, Eve, meaning "life" or "living," for "she was the mother of all living" (Genesis 3:20And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

God's plan for the male and female sexes is then clearly instituted: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.



See All...). In joining them as man and wife, the Creator of mankind instituted marriage. In the next verse Adam and Eve are clearly described as a married couple: "And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (verse 25).



Thousands of years later we see the covenant relationship between God and the nation of Israel, whom He had chosen, likened to the marital relationship (Isaiah 54:5For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ reinforces the special relationship between a husband and wife: "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,' and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew 19:4-6 [4] And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

[5] And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

[6] Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

He stated further: "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so" (verse 8). Clearly, marriage between a husband and wife was intended to be for life.



Following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul wrote extensively on marriage. In his epistle to the Ephesians, chapter 5, he compares the marital union of a husband and wife to the relationship between Christ and the Church.



He writes: "For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church ... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her ... that He might present her to Himself a glorious church ... So husbands ought to love their own wives ..." (verses 23-28).



Later we see, at the very close of the Bible, a time still ahead when Jesus Christ returns and marries His Bride, the Church (Revelation 19:7Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.



See All...). In these scriptural references we see a totally committed relationship between Jesus Christ and His true followers, the Church.



The Western crisis in marriage

Today we live in an age in which commitment within marriage has become rare, especially in the richer Western world. For centuries the laws of Western nations relating to marriage were very strict. Divorce was not usually permitted.



In the last century, however, we have seen dramatic changes in laws relating to marriage. Among the most significant were the no-fault divorce laws passed in most of the Western democracies a little over 30 years ago. These laws contributed greatly to the trivialization of marriage, making it easier for a husband or wife to walk away from that commitment.



At the same time, the availability of the birth control pill made it quite acceptable for unmarried couples to live together, as supposedly there were now no negative consequences to sex outside of marriage. These major societal shifts further diminished the marital relationship even as they encouraged a vast rise in premarital sex and adultery.



In turn, these were—and still are—promoted as "alternative lifestyles," with mass media constantly depicting temporary relationships without commitment as fun and faithful marriage as tedious. The tragic result was an explosion of terrible consequences—broken homes, abandoned children, depression, crime, substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases that remain with us today.



Another major shift in sexual attitudes

In the "anything goes" atmosphere of the 1960s and 70s, it was only a matter of time before other lifestyles would become accepted.



Before 1973 American psychiatrists considered same-sex attraction (homosexuality) as abnormal behavior and offered treatment accordingly. But a decision that year reversed this long-held stand. No longer was same-sex attraction classified as abnormal.



Similar decisions had already been made in other Western nations. In a span of 30 years, people practicing homosexual acts would go from being considered criminals by society to being accepted, if not fully embraced, by much of the heterosexual community.



In recent years same-sex couples have increasingly pressed for the legal option of entering a full marital union. Two European countries, Belgium and the Netherlands, already have laws permitting such marriages. Several other European countries allow civil unions, which give same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples without a legal marriage. The American state of Vermont also permits same-sex civil unions.



Following the June Ontario appeals court decision that ruled in favor of same-sex unions being equal to heterosexual unions, the Canadian government announced that it would legislate same-sex marriages into law in the near future. In the United States, Massachusetts appears likely to make a similar decision in favor of same-sex marriages. It seems only a matter of time before the whole country follows suit.



It should be noted that, in the United States at least, it is the courts that have made these changes possible rather than the voters, as polls consistently show that a majority of Americans do not support same-sex marriage. Federal and state lawmakers wouldn't risk the ire of voters on this issue, and even Canada is simply following a decision of the court.



As with so many of the liberal social reforms of the last four decades, the courts have played a leading role in changing society, with activist judges sometimes arbitrarily creating new rights and law where none were previously spelled out.



While many on both sides of the argument will claim that this is a worldwide issue, the fact remains that this is essentially a Western phenomenon, thereby further widening the gap between the rich Western democracies and the poorer nations.



The fault lines are also spreading throughout the Western religious world, with major international church denominations facing increasing division over this issue and that of the ordination of homosexual clergy.



Does the Bible offer guidance?

Why doesn't the Bible mention same-sex marriages? The answer is simple—no such institution existed when it was written! No matter how bad some of the societies described in the Bible were, they never went so far as to have same-sex marriages.



Make no mistake, the Word of God approves only one sexual relationship: that between a husband and wife within marriage. You can search the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation looking for the existence or approval of such alternative relationships as living together and same-sex marriage, but there is none. Certainly there are accounts of fornication, adultery and same-sex relationships, but they are always in the context of sin, which is the breaking of God's law (1 John 3:4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

And yes, some of God's most faithful servants committed sins in the sexual area—and the Bible duly records the painful consequences their actions had on them and others. These servants of God allowed themselves to be unduly influenced by the society around them, just as Christians can be today.



So why does our Creator forbid all sexual relationships outside of marriage? Does He not want us to have what some consider to be fun? Does God not want those who are attracted to the same sex to have the same happiness, commitment and sense of fulfillment that is achievable within a committed, lifelong, heterosexual marriage?



In John 10:10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.



See All... Jesus Christ states, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." God wants us to be happy, to live fulfilled and joyful lives.



That is precisely why He gave us the Ten Commandments, some of which deal with the family relationship. It is also part of the reason He instituted marriage. Within the framework of a stable, committed marriage, people can find a sense of loving security. Children especially need this when they are brought into the world.



So why can't gay couples have it too? Some argue that they also deserve the happiness of a stable and committed marriage. And in this age of AIDS and many other terrible diseases, shouldn't we encourage same-sex partners to remain faithful to one another, just as we do heterosexual couples through the institution of marriage?



Sex and the Bible

In the Bible, marriage is always between a husband and wife. There are no scriptural accounts of same-sex marriages, even though homosexual relationships were common and sometimes encouraged in the Greco-Roman world of early New Testament times (although an exclusively homosexual orientation was considered an aberration even in that society, which understood the necessity of heterosexual marriage for the production and raising of children).



Pagan gentile society notwithstanding, both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible clearly condemn sexual acts between members of the same sex. "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination," says Leviticus 18:22Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Why does the Bible forbid such behavior? God created the first two human beings male and female, bound them as husband and wife in a sexual union and instructed them to have children (Genesis 2:24-25 [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

See All...; 1:28). The biblical account of our first human parents makes it clear that God ordained the marriage of Adam and Eve, creating the family union of a man and a woman.



God designed this union to stabilize and protect male-female and parent-child relationships with love and security. It was also designed to serve as a pattern or model of the relationship God wants to have with His people (Ephesians 5:23-33 [23] For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

[24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

There is no question that male-female attraction is God's intended design. Homosexuality, on the other hand, is a developmental disorder that leads to actions and lifestyles diametrically opposite to the male-female design.



When Adam and Eve rejected God's instructions and determined to do things their own way, they set humanity on a course that every human being since has chosen to follow. Consequently, as a result of man's rejection of God, men and women are experiencing an array of confused or conflicted interpersonal relationships—including homosexuality. Although homosexuality may feel "natural" to people who have same-sex attraction, it in fact reflects a yearning that God intended to be met within the natural male-female family context, with parents providing the proper natural affection and approval their children need.



Man and woman: A perfect creation

When God created Adam and Eve, "they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.



See All...). Additionally, we read that "God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good" (Genesis 1:31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

This tells us that God's creation was "very good," including His creation of the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve. Even their naked bodies were physically perfect, created differently, but also perfectly, to complement each other and to bring additional human beings into the world, in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-28 [26] And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

[27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

[28] And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.





See All...). Adam was pleased with his new companion, to whom he remained married for a very long time, until death. He was clearly attracted to her—they gave birth to many children.



What we learn from these passages is that a man should naturally be attracted to the female body. As Adam and Eve were the only two people living at this time, they could walk around unclothed without any sense of shame or embarrassment.



God intended men to be attracted to women, and vice versa. When a man is not attracted to women, something has gone wrong in the natural development of his mind, as this is not the way God intended things to be.



Causes of same-sex attraction

It is common today for men who consider themselves gay to say that they were born that way, but there is no convincing evidence for this. Homosexuality is not caused by a "gay gene," or identical twins would always both be gay—and they usually aren't.



What is the truth? As most homosexual males and some lesbians can only remember same-sex attractions, even when very young, we can conclude that their early development was affected in some way that led to a different sexual orientation.



Research has shown that the basic common cause of homosexuality, whether male or female, is an emotional detachment from the parent of the same sex (see interview with Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, page 20). This causes insecurity about the child's own masculinity (or femininity) and makes the forming of friendship bonds with those of the same sex much more difficult, frequently leading to painful rejection. Often added to this in the case of boys is a mother who overly compensates, giving the son too much female affection and fawning over in the early stages of his life.



Deprived of normal male love and affection, the boy starts out in life with a desperate longing for what is a legitimate unmet need. The inevitable attraction to the same sex in itself is not a sin. Later on, however, that need often becomes sexualized—leading to sinful homosexual acts with other boys and men. At the same time, the smothering love and affection he received from his mother often will have contributed to a rejection of women as a source of love.



This developmental tragedy often takes place within the first two or three years of childhood. Typically, in the first year, a baby bonds with the mother as she gives birth to the child and then breastfeeds and generally nurtures him. After the child is weaned, the father must play a more prominent role.



This is the time when sexual identity is formed. If the father is absent, or unwilling or unable to fulfill his role, then the child will feel rejection—and the basis on which homosexual feelings can develop will have been laid.



Note the importance of perception—either of the lack of loving affection or of rejection. In some cases a father truly may be affectionate and loving to his son, but the boy may not perceive it and instead develops feelings of rejection.



Or, in a family of several boys where the father is so busy with work or other things that he fails to spend any time with them, all are neglected, but only one may turn out to have homosexual tendencies. This is the one who perceived rejection, perhaps because he was more sensitive than the others.



Struggle for those dealing with same-sex attraction

Sadly, these tendencies and unmet needs remain. Because this lack becomes a part of one's mental and emotional makeup at such an early age, it should be understood that exclusively same-sex attraction is seldom a voluntary, conscious choice.



Homosexual acts, however, just like heterosexual acts, are a voluntary choice. While the attraction may be there in a way that is not a matter of choice, it is one's choice to dwell on or entertain thoughts that can lead to sin. Jesus Christ pointed out that mentally entertaining thoughts of illicit sexual acts is itself a sin (Matthew 5:27-28 [27] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

[28] But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Paul urged Christians to be aware of the spiritual struggles in which all of us are engaged, emphasizing our need to discipline our thoughts and bring "every thought into captivity" (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 [4] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

[5] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;





See All...). James, Jesus' half-brother, wrote that mentally dwelling on temptations typically leads us into lust and sin, so we must short-circuit the process before sin results (James 1:14-15 [14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

Some give in to their same-sex attraction later on in life and enter the gay lifestyle. Others, often due to religious beliefs, try to fight their desires and overcome them. These people are often called strugglers, reflecting the reality that it is a lifetime struggle. Another term increasingly used is healers, recognizing that they are seeking emotional healing for their condition. A combination of both terms (struggler-healer) is appropriate.



Many people with same-sex attraction experience social isolation and emotional pain as they struggle to cope with their lives. Some endure a struggle between coping with their homosexuality and remaining faithful to their religious beliefs. For many, it is a lonely, secret struggle that can sometimes involve excruciating pain.



Some give in to their same-sex attraction and enter the gay lifestyle. Others, in spite of their pain, continue to struggle, often in isolation, to remain faithful to their religious beliefs. In recent years, a number of social and religious organizations have recognized the need to help and support these individuals who struggle to be faithful to their religious convictions, although the work of these organizations has often been viewed as controversial.



This is where churches and individual Christians can help. Those who struggle with same-sex attraction not only battle with their unnatural sexual desires every day of their lives, they also have to do so in secret. Sometimes they seek help from others. Typically, they will either go to their church pastor or priest, seek psychological help or talk to a close friend. All three choices are problematic. Seeking help from the wrong person can lead to even greater withdrawal and a deepening fear of sharing with anyone.



Some church pastors may overreact when the problem of same-sex attraction is brought to them. This can push the person seeking and needing help into further isolation, even to the point of feeling rejected by God. Some people have made things worse by betraying the confidence of the individual out of misguided concern for others in the congregation.



Seeking professional psychiatric help can also be a problem for struggler-healers. Since the American Psychiatric Association's change of policy on homosexuality 30 years ago, most of those seeking help today will not be encouraged to change, but rather to reaffirm their same-sex feelings and embrace the gay lifestyle.



Sharing the problem with a friend can often end a friendship, as most men cannot handle a confession of homosexual feelings. Another obvious complication is the possibility of physical feelings developing toward the friend. While this is a problem that will need to be resolved, it should not rule out helping someone struggling with same-sex attraction.



Since the root cause of such attraction is rejection causing emotional detachment, someone struggling with this problem will find further rejection devastating. Not having had a close, loving relationship with the father in early childhood, there is a great need for such a relationship with another male. This need should be met in a nonsexual relationship with a heterosexual male who wants to help.



The apostle James wrote: "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much" (James 5:16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.



See All...). It should be possible for Christians to share their problems with other Christians, expecting help and encouragement in return, even when their problem is one of unresolved homosexual desires and feelings.



Sadly, most people who struggle with this problem will say that the response to sharing is usually negative. They soon learn to shut up and keep their problem a secret. Many, through discouragement, have even given up on trying to live God's way and have sought solace and acceptance in the gay community.



However, this is never the answer for a Christian. Christians realize that God gave us His laws because He cares for us. Certain sexual relationships are forbidden because they can never satisfy and lead to great emotional pain from which God wants to spare us.



The apostle Paul wrote: "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.



See All...). This is not just a warning against sexually transmitted diseases. It is also a warning against all the emotional damage that results from unfulfilling relationships based on sex, whether heterosexual or homosexual. Sadly, this lack of fulfillment for homosexuals often leads them into more and more sin, in a desperate and futile attempt to find the love they never thought or felt they received as a child.



Encouraging lessons from ancient Corinth

We learn from the apostle Paul's letters, preserved in the New Testament, that some people in the Corinthian church had come out of this homosexual lifestyle to become truly converted Christians.



Corinth was a port city in which all kinds of sexual and other vices were all too common, and notice that Paul warns the Church members there against slipping into such sins. "Do not be deceived," he wrote. "Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites ... will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [9] Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

[10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.





See All...). The separate references to "homosexuals" and "sodomites" in Greek refers to different roles taken in homosexual couples.



We should note that in Paul's writings here, he condemns not only homosexual acts, but fornication and adultery as well. Too many Christians are quick to turn a blind eye to their own heterosexual sins while quickly condemning homosexual acts on the part of others.



It cannot be emphasized enough: All sexual acts outside of a biblically sanctioned marriage are a sin. The apostle James put it well when he wrote, "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all" (James 2:10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.



See All...). So gay-bashing—attacking gays or singling out homosexual behavior as the worst sin—is unjustified.



In the following verse of 1 Corinthians 6, those struggling with same-sex attraction can read some very encouraging words from Paul: "And such were some of you," he notes. "But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God" (verse 11).



"And such were some of you" is in the past tense. The implication of this is clear: There were people in this Greek-speaking congregation, in a part of the world where homosexual acts were typically considered normal, who came out of their homosexual practices upon repentance and were able to overcome their desires.



What happens when society rejects God?

Although homosexuality is common to all cultures, it is in the Western democracies that the gay movement is most vocal. This was not the case even 50 years ago. This could mean that there are more people with homosexual leanings today than there were then, although militant gays would argue that it simply reflects progress made by them in gaining societal acceptance.



The truth, however, is that the greater numbers can easily be explained by the fact that the traditional family has progressively broken down in the last four decades with easier divorce and greater promiscuity. Absent or distant fathers are more common now than ever before, creating conditions in which the factors that may lead to homosexuality can flourish.



Writing to the church in Rome, Paul wrote a passage of Scripture that is quite applicable today. He showed a certain progression that takes place in human thinking that flows from man's rejection of God.



"... Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves ...



"For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting" (Romans 1:21-28 [21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

What this passage shows is that man progressively moves farther and farther away from God's way of thinking when he rejects the Bible. Our societies testify to this fact. Since the theory of evolution gained popularity a century and a half ago, Western nations have progressively distanced themselves from God. Now the thinking of most people is warped, not based on and often not even taking into consideration godly values or biblical teaching.



The theory of evolution—and its attendant arguments that there is no such thing as a Creator and that the Bible is merely a collection of myths—has affected man's thinking to the point of acceptance of gay marriage. It has taken a long time, yes, but the link is there. When people believe that human beings are nothing more than highly evolved animals, there is no basis for saying "no" to same-sex marriage—and many other things as well.



When God's Word has been rejected by government and banished from schools and public life, anything is acceptable. After gay marriage, can we expect to see pressure to legalize group marriage, incest and pedophilia? After all, the same rationale the U.S. Supreme Court used in striking down state laws against sodomy also applies to these sins.



Collectively, Western society is heading down the same road as ancient Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities that God destroyed for their varied sins—one of which was homosexuality, Sodom giving its name to sodomy. Yet individually, everyone has the opportunity to repent and come out of this society's sliding standards and morals, to embrace God's way and fight, with His help, against any tendencies that do not conform to His law. This is the only way to true happiness and fulfillment.
