History and Prophecy Coincide in Louisiana Purchase

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

This year marks the 200th anniversary of the Louisiana Purchase, one of the greatest land deals in the history of the world. It involved the peaceful transfer of 900,000 square miles of territory from which all or part of 13 states in what is now the central part of the United States were formed. Much of what is considered the heartland of the country, with an abundance of agricultural wealth, was purchased at a bargain price. Yet it almost didn't happen.
The major European power that controlled the area at the time the United States gained its independence did not want to see the infant republic expand into the territory. Another European country that obtained the region by a secret treaty had designs of colonization by its people. Even political forces within the United States were against westward expansion.
Despite all of these forces against pioneering this bountiful land, it was destined to be peopled by the descendants of Joseph, one of the tribes of ancient Israel. God promised the patriarch Abraham, “I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing” (Genesis 12:2). The Louisiana Purchase was a major step in fulfilling this prophecy and others that followed to Isaac and Jacob, for its territory doubled the size of the young country and set it on course to become the major world power of the latter 20th century.
All of the history and the various intrigues that led up to the famous Louisiana Purchase are described in a new book titled A Wilderness So Immense by Jon Kukla. Unless otherwise noted, all quotations are from Mr. Kukla's book.
 Louisiana
The French explorer, Robert Cavelier De La Salle, led an expedition south from Quebec down the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, passing through what he described as “the most beautiful country in the world” (p. 30). On April 9, 1682, he claimed the interior of the continent for France and named it “Louisiana” after the king of France, Louis XIV.
During the Seven Years War (1756-1763), France was fighting against Great Britain and Prussia on two fronts, Europe and North America. France eventually lost the war and, through a treaty, ceded Canada to Great Britain and the Louisiana territory to Spain.
Carlos III, king of Spain, now had control of the vast land tract just about 13 years before the United States would declare its independence from Great Britain. He was glad to obtain this huge land mass, since it served as a buffer between the American colonists and the rich silver mines of Mexico. Spain now controlled not only most of South America but a huge part of North America as well.
Silver production was booming in Mexico, accounting for half the export trade of the entire Spanish Empire. Thus, the Louisiana territory in Spanish hands served to keep the aggressive colonists away from the lucrative silver production in Mexico, and the king of Spain wanted to keep it that way.
Navigation of the Mississippi
Separating the now Spanish Louisiana territory and the newly independent United States was the mighty Mississippi River, which served as a rapid means to move trade goods down to the port of New Orleans. Many colonists flocked to the west along the tributaries of this great river to try to make their fortunes. “The navigation of the Mississippi we must have” (p. 20), wrote Thomas Jefferson as he set out to negotiate with Spain for those rights.
The king of Spain sent a special minister, Don Diego de Gardoqui, to negotiate Mississippi navigation rights, but the king's objective was to stall and delay with no real intention of granting the Americans' request. He began bargaining separately with the New England states, whose fishing industry was becoming lucrative. Gardoqui encouraged a separate northern confederacy and a commercial treaty with Spain.
This scheme had potential, as many in the New England states did not see the value of the Mississippi and westward expansion. A heated controversy developed between New England and the southern states, which desired free navigation of the river and westward expansion. The young nation came dangerously close to splitting apart only 12 years after gaining independence.
The Spanish intended to keep the Louisiana territory in their hands. In terms of world dominion of territory, the Spanish Empire was at its peak in the year 1786.
Rise of Napoleon Bonaparte
As long as Louisiana remained in its hands, Spain had no intentions of permitting Americans to enter the land. But events in Europe would change the situation dramatically.
God revealed to the prophet Daniel that it is He who “removes kings and raises up kings” (Daniel 2:21). Amazingly, at the precise time of the U.S. negotiations with Spain, a revolution took place that saw the king of France (Louis XVI) toppled and a fragile republican government established. Even more amazing is that bad weather set the stage for Louis' defeat. On July 23, 1788, violent hailstorms destroyed crops and wildlife throughout most of France. “As though some biblical curse had been unleashed…drought followed the hailstorm” (p. 41). A terrible winter followed the drought. A prophetic scripture in Psalms 148:8 declares that God uses weather to accomplish His purpose: “Fire and hail, snow and clouds; stormy wind, fulfilling His word.”
Weather played a part in these historical events, enabling the emergence of the leader who would sell the vast Louisiana territory to the United States. Weather would again play a role in later events, as we shall see. Meanwhile, angry and starving Frenchmen became organized, pushed by enlightenment ideas; the revolution became violent, culminating in the execution of King Louis XVI.
In 1792, an aggressive French Republic declared war on Austria and the following year on Great Britain and Spain. The war against the Spanish went well for France and soon Spain had to sue for peace. As part of a treaty, they gave up their short-lived alliance with Great Britain and the colony of Santo Domingo (now the Dominican Republic). Meanwhile, Napoleon Bonaparte, a military genius, was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at 24 years of age. He began moving up in power and grabbed total control of France. In 1799, he became a virtual dictator. Now, the players who would affect the historical land transfer we call the Louisiana Purchase were in place.
Napoleon had visions of regaining the former French colony of Louisiana in North America. As the war with France was going badly for Spain, Madrid decided to cut a deal and relinquish the territory to France. In a secret treaty, Spain ceded Louisiana back to France and on March 21, 1801, France took title to the land.
The U.S. government was unaware of these secret dealings, although it suspected something odd was afoot. Once discovered, the new development alarmed the foreign secretary of Great Britain, Baron Hawkesbury: “The acquisition might enable France to extend her influence and perhaps her dominion up the Mississippi and through the Great Lakes even to Canada” (p. 226).
Indeed, he had cause to be alarmed, because Napoleon began planning an expedition to occupy and fortify Louisiana in April 1801.
Napoleon wrote to his minister of marine on June 4, 1802, “My intention is that we take possession of Louisiana with the shortest possible delay, that this expedition be organized in the greatest secrecy, and that it have the appearance of being directed on St. Domingue” (p. 227). Furthermore, he directed the minister to plan “for the fortifications and batteries we should have to construct there in order to have a harbor and some men-of-war sheltered from superior forces” (p. 227).
The ambitions of Napoleon were to occupy, fortify and colonize the Louisiana territory. Had this happened, the course of history for the United States and the world would have changed! But events on Santo Domingo and, again, the weather would eventually force the dictator to change his plans.
He first sent an expedition to claim the sugar-producing island of Santo Domingo, from which the French were to move on Louisiana. A fierce rebellion by slaves on Santo Domingo forced the French into fighting a guerrilla war that expended thousands of troops. Yellow fever then began to take its toll, claiming the lives of thousands of French soldiers.
Meanwhile, a second expedition set to go directly to Louisiana with 3,000 soldiers and many ships met numerous delays. Freezing weather for almost three months did not allow the fleet to set sail. Then a terrible storm damaged many of the ships. Napoleon became so disgusted with the problems and delays that he gave up on the whole idea and decided to sell the Louisiana territory!
The United States had sent special envoys to France (during all of the secret French maneuvers) with the hopes of buying New Orleans and maybe Florida (also then in French hands). Robert Livingston (one of the envoys) wrote that “Florida and New Orleans might be a cheap purchase at twenty millions of dollars” (p. 241). They were surprised when Napoleon offered them all of the Louisiana territory! They began to negotiate a price. It eventually cost $15 million, which breaks down to be four cents an acre. What a bargain!
“I give it to you”
In the book of Genesis, we read: “And the Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him: 'Lift your eyes now and look from the place where you are—northward, southward, eastward, and westward; for all the land which you see I give to you and your descendants forever… Arise, walk in the land through its length and its width, for I give it to you” (Genesis 13:14-15, 17).
The Nelson Study Bible adds an interesting commentary to verse 17: “Abram's walk in the land is a symbolic act of taking possession. Abraham would not take possession of the land; his descendants would” (p. 29). This was partially fulfilled when the children of Israel took possession of the land of Canaan. But the Louisiana Purchase was an even greater fulfillment, as a major portion of Abraham's modern descendants took possession of a land promised to Abraham.
Consider the blessings promised to Abraham's descendant Joseph: “The blessings of your father are stronger than the blessings of the eternal mountains, the bounties of the everlasting hills; may they be on the head of Joseph, on the brow of him who was set apart from his brothers” (Genesis 49:26, NRSV). (See our booklet, The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy for the full story.)
The Louisiana Purchase treaty was dated April 30, 1803, and after working out translations and the necessary ratifications, Louisiana was formally transferred to the United States from France on Dec. 20, 1803.
The great nation that God promised to make of one branch of Abraham's descendants took a huge leap forward from this time on. Even Napoleon, reflecting upon the magnitude of the event said, “This accession of territory strengthens forever the power of the United States” (p. 281). What a great series of events to reflect upon. This little noticed 200th anniversary truly marks one of the greatest moments in American history. —WNP

Current Events & Trends Turkey joins fight against ISIS but targets Kurds

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

Turkey’s government, led by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is among those which have pledged to help in the fight against ISIS.
However, the actual result of Turkish military intervention hasn’t been exactly what its Western partners expected. While Turkey did assist the United States in conducting airstrikes against key ISIS strongholds in Syria, it’s also begun an airstrike campaign against Kurdish forces in the region. While the Turks and Kurds have no love lost in their nearly centuries-old, on and off conflict, this is quite problematic as the Kurdistan Worker’s Party (PKK) has become an ally in the global effort against ISIS.
The PKK continues to be both an asset and a liability for anti-ISIS forces, as the Kurdish militants are simultaneously considered terrorists by America and the European Union as well as acting as an effective buffer against continuing ISIS expansion.
The Wall Street Journal reported on the fallout from the recent Turkish-Kurdish violence: “After endorsing the strikes on the PKK in Iraq, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said … that it was impossible to continue peace talks with the group …
“As lawmakers gathered in Ankara to discuss the deepening crisis, a blast hit the Kirkuk-Ceyhan oil pipeline near Turkey’s border with Iraq, the Energy Ministry said” (Dion Nissenbaum and Yeliz Candemir, “Turkey Hits Kurdish Militants in Iraq in Largest Airstrike Yet,” July 29, 2015).
Violence and confusion are the hallmarks of human efforts to engineer peace in the world. God knows the human heart, and He knows what the way of man produces in the world. That’s why He inspired the prophet Isaiah to speak out about the confused ways of the nations: “The way of peace they have not known, and there is no justice in their ways; they have made themselves crooked paths; whoever takes that way shall not know peace” (Isaiah 59:8). To find true peace, we must look to God’s ultimate solutions, not man’s vain striving. (Source: The Wall Street Journal. )

Current Events & Trends Islamic radicals provide resources to gain support

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

Recently The Wall Street Journal reported: “Radicals from [a group in Pakistan called] Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat [ASWJ] have dug wells as part of their campaign to deliver public services and solidify support. The water isn’t clean, but it is better than nothing, and grateful residents come to fill up buckets” (Saeed Shah and Syed Shoaib Hasan, “In Pakistan Extremist Group Expands Its Reach,” July 30, 2015).
This is a Sunni Islamist group that has been under an unenforced ban by the Pakistani government since 2012. There’s still a massive gap in the ideologies of Sunni and Shiite Muslims. The ASWJ is against the Shiites and has been very active against them.
It may be a mystery to many in the West how average citizens would align themselves with radicals they know to be dangerous. Many in the West aren’t struggling every day for resources like water for survival. When groups like the ASWJ come into a village and provide a necessity of life, it’s hard to reject them.
Supplying resources is not the only way these groups can be active. “ASWJ claims a presence in every district in Pakistan. Its leaders deliver public speeches, its followers organize rallies and its members are candidates in elections. In Orangi [a town in the metropolitan area of Karachi], it runs dozens of madrassas, or Islamic schools.”
It may be hard for the local villagers to recognize this as a political move, but that’s exactly what it is. These groups need support and allies, and the way to achieve that is by providing for those in need.
We see the same tactics with other terrorist groups. As was noted about Hamas in the Los Angeles Times, “Though notorious as a militant group, it is better known among Palestinians for its food banks and quality schools and clinics … The work Hamas does at home is an often-overlooked key to the domestic popularity of an organization most known elsewhere for killing” (Kim Murphy, “Hamas Victory Is Built on Social Work,” March 2, 2006).
And the same goes for the Shiite group Hezbollah. It’s been estimated “that about half of Hezbollah’s budget is dedicated to social services sectors such as health, veterans’ services, reconstruction and compensation, education, women’s groups, and even the Imam al-Mahdi Scouts (like the Boy Scouts). Such efforts are employed to capture the willing support of the people in order to further Hezbollah’s political aims” (Kenneth Poole, forward to Maj. James Love, Hezbollah: Social Services as a Source of Power, Joint Special Operations University Report, June 2010).
These methods are used because they work powerfully. And they are helped not a little by the evil that keeps the whole world under deception (Revelation 12:9).
One day the truth will set the world free (John 8:32; Isaiah 11:9). (Sources: Joint Special Operations University, Los Angeles Times, The Wall Street Journal. )

Has World War III Already Begun?

Every August I take a small group of young people from North America to Ghana, in West Africa, to help with an annual summer camp sponsored by the United Church of God, the publisher of this magazine.
This year our journey was set to begin on Thursday, Aug. 10.
That evening we were all due to fly from various cities across the United States to London's Heathrow Airport. From there we would all be going to Accra, Ghana, on the same plane. There was only one exception, a young lady who was already in Europe visiting family would meet us in Ghana.
On that particular Thursday morning, I began my day by watching the world news on BBC America, a cable channel available throughout the United States.
The first item of news immediately caught my attention. London's Heathrow Airport was in chaos due to a terrorist scare. More than 20 suspected terrorists had been arrested, thought to be part of a plot to blow up 10 to 15 passenger jets headed toward U.S. cities, planes all set to depart from Heathrow.
If successful, the carnage could have been considerably greater than on Sept. 11, with a death toll estimated to be in the thousands.
Historian Niall Ferguson wrote in the London Sunday Telegraph Aug. 27 that, if successful, such an attack could have triggered a civil war in Britain (“Imagine the Bombs Had Gone Off: How Would Britain Have Changed?”).
What it did trigger was chaos and confusion that continued for days. Out of our group of five young adults from America who passed through Heathrow, one was delayed for 24 hours while the other four did not see their luggage again for 10 days or more. In the case of one, the luggage was returned to the United States and never made it to Ghana.
Needless to say, the whole incident was a great inconvenience for us and for countless others.
Restrictions on the contents of hand luggage left tens of thousands of businessmen and women unable to take laptop computers or mobile phones on board with them. I knew I couldn't take any liquids on board with me, but was surprised to have a magazine and newspaper confiscated.
Is history repeating itself?
Such is the age in which we live, one changed dramatically in the last five years—and likely to change even more dramatically in the years ahead!
The terrorist scare came only 13 months after the London terror attacks on the city's transportation system, attacks that left 56 dead.
Around the time of the anniversary of those attacks, a number of British papers polled Muslims. The results revealed that a significant percentage of British-born Muslims, most of them children of immigrants from developing countries, are supportive of the goals and methods of radical Islamic terrorist groups.
Unsurprisingly, The Sunday Telegraph's front page highlighted the fact that 53 percent of Britons now see Islam as a threat to their way of life. Not radical Islam, but Islam itself.
Winston Churchill III, a member of the British parliament and grandson of the famous World War II leader, warned on the BBC World Service on the anniversary of the July 7 bombings that this threat from radical Islam is growing, not just in Britain but throughout Western Europe. Demographic trends show a rapidly growing Muslim population in many countries, including the United States, while native Brits, Germans, French, Spanish and Italians are all in decline.
His stark warning reminds us of the first Winston Churchill, who 70 years ago persistently warned the British people of the growing threat from Nazi Germany, a threat most people wanted to ignore.
While Germany rapidly rearmed as it built up its industrial might following defeat in World War I and subsequent economic upheavals, Churchill's was a lone voice across the English Channel warning that the rise of Germany posed a grave threat to Britain and its empire.
Sadly, Churchill was proved correct. The Second World War was the result, a war formally declared on Germany by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain on Sept. 3, 1939. Less than a year earlier, after meeting with German Chancellor Adolf Hitler in Munich, Chamberlain had infamously assured the world of “peace in our time.”
Although all the nations of the British Empire and Commonwealth, a quarter of the world's people, entered the war on Britain's side almost immediately, the United States stayed out of it until the Pearl Harbor attack 27 months later. The Japanese attack on the U.S. Pacific fleet on Dec. 7, 1941, brought America into the war as a combatant.
But in reality, this worldwide conflict actually began much earlier, with the Japanese invasion of China in 1931. It could even be said that the defeat of Germany in World War I and the subsequent peace treaty made World War II inevitable. The rise of fascism in Italy in 1922 was another stepping-stone toward war in Europe.
While Churchill kept up his warnings during his “wilderness years,” most people remained oblivious to what was happening in the world around them and to the growing threat to their peace and security.
As it was in the 1930s, so it is today, 70 years later.
Once again, huge numbers of people seem to be in denial of the growing threat to their peace and security, this time from global jihadists who are determined to bring about a clash of civilizations between the West and Islam, with the ultimate goal of forcing everyone on the planet to accept Islam. And Islam, we might remind ourselves, means “submission”—submission to the will of Allah.
When did World War III begin?
Military historian Max Boot sums up the sobering situation today, five years after Sept. 11, 2001: ” Iraq is slipping deeper into the blood-red waters of civil strife. The Taliban is resurgent in Afghanistan. Hizballah is crowing in the wake of Israel's inconclusive attacks. Hamas runs the Palestinian Authority. Iran is drawing closer to acquiring nuclear weapons. Osama bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-awahiri, continue to taunt the West with messages of defiance, as jihadist cells from London to Lahore plot fresh attacks” (“It's Not Over Yet,” Time, Sept. 11).
Newt Gingrich, former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, wrote in the Sept. 7 issue of The Wall Street Journal: “Five years have passed since the horrific attack on our American homeland, and, still, there is one serious, undeniable fact we have yet to confront: We are, today, not where we wanted to be and nowhere near where we need to be” (“Bush and Lincoln”).
Interviewed on The Journal Editorial Report on Fox News Sept. 2, Amir Taheri, former editor of Kayhan , Iran's largest daily newspaper, was asked if current developments were a prelude to World War III.
His response was that World War III actually began in 1979, when the Iranian revolution overthrew the pro-Western shah of Iran and replaced him with the anti-Western, theocratic Islamic Republic of Iran. Ever since, Iran has devoted itself to the spread of militant Islam and the defeat of “the Great Satan” (the United States) and “the Little Satans” (Britain and Israel).
Prior to World War II the world saw plenty of warning signs of what was coming. These included the rise of fascism from 1922 on, Japan's invasion of China in 1931, the Italian invasion of Abyssinia in 1935, the German invasions of the Rhineland (1936), Austria and Czechoslovakia (1938), government-sanctioned attacks on Jews, not to mention the rising rhetoric of the antidemocratic forces in the nations that would soon form the Axis Powers.
But people in the democratic West wanted to believe all would be well and ignored the warning signs.
We've seen the same pattern since 1979 with the rise of radical Islam. The 1979 seizure of the U.S. embassy in Tehran and the holding hostage of dozens of American diplomatic personnel there for 444 days in direct contravention of international law, the founding of Hezbollah and the blowing up of the U.S. Marine barracks in Beirut in 1983, the first attempt to bring down the World Trade Center 10 years later, attacks on U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, the attack on the USS Cole in 2000, and then the 9/11 attacks all clearly show the jihadists' intentions.
It certainly didn't end there. Since then attacks have killed or injured more than 410 in Bali, Indonesia, in October 2002; 2,200 in Madrid, Spain, in March 2004; 340 in Beslan, Russia, in September 2004; 750 in London in July 2005; another 150 in Bali in October 2005 and almost 1,000 in Bombay in July 2006. This doesn't include countless smaller attacks or plots disrupted before they could be carried out.
When did World War III begin? In the minds of the radical Islamists, the global jihadists, it clearly began a long time ago!
In this global conflict, the West remains at a disadvantage. One reason for this is the deep cultural and political divisions that exist in many Western nations. Jesus Christ observed in Matthew 12:25 that a house divided against itself cannot stand: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.” With this in mind, clearly the West as it is cannot win the current conflict.
America clearly divided over radical Islam
Mr. Gingrich observed that the United States has divided into three factions. There are those who “try to find some explainable way to avoid reality while advocating return to 'normalcy,' and promoting a policy of weakness and withdrawal abroad.” A second group believes that the threat is very real but that America can handle it.
Drawing a parallel with the crisis confronting Abraham Lincoln in the Civil War, Mr. Gingrich shows that victory for the Union was not achieved until President Lincoln chose the third course: “Lincoln agonizingly concluded that a third faction had the right strategy for victory. This group's strategy demanded reorganizing everything as needed, intensifying the war, and bringing the full might of the industrial North to bear until the war was won.”
In other words, Mr. Gingrich was saying the struggle against radical Islam should be the United States' number one priority.
Few in the West fully realize the religious element involved in this conflict. As Karen Armstrong, a recognized expert on fundamentalism and the author of a number of books on Islam, put it on a Canadian television program last year, “In the 1960s everybody thought religion was passé,” a thing of the past. “Now at the beginning of the 21st century we see that nothing is more important!”
It is precisely because the West does not take religion seriously that it is at a distinct disadvantage. There is a failure at the deepest level to understand radical Islam.
Historical continuum of conflict
Pope Benedict XVI caused a furor when he touched on this during a visit to his Bavarian homeland on Sept. 14. He quoted a 14th-century emperor who said, “Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached.”
The Byzantine emperor's words turned out to also be quite prophetic—Muslim forces destroyed the Byzantine Empire in the following century, taking control of the capital city of Constantinople in 1453, extinguishing the Roman Empire in the East.
Islamic forces continued to expand after that conquest. In the following century they reached the gates of Vienna in the very heart of Europe. In two attempts to take the city they were repulsed by a multinational force of Europeans united by a common Catholic faith.
This was not the first time that the Church of Rome was a significant factor in fighting Islamic expansionism. In A.D. 800 the pope crowned Charlemagne Holy Roman emperor. Charlemagne's grandfather, Charles Martel, had defeated Muslim forces at the gates of Paris in 732, exactly 100 years after the death of the prophet Muhammad.
Only a revived Western Roman Empire seemed able to unite the Catholic nations of Europe against both internal and external threats. Three centuries later another pope, Urban II, called on the Catholic countries of Europe to launch a “crusade” to recapture the Holy Land from Islam, a massive effort that led to two centuries of conflict between Catholic Europe and the Islamic world.
No country or organization on earth has had more experience battling against Islam than the papacy!
Following the pope's comments in Bavaria, a spokesman for the Pakistani parliament warned of a “clash of civilizations” between the West and Islam along the lines of earlier clashes between the two that have taken place down through the centuries.
A world-shaking conflict to come
Believe it or not, the Bible also warns of this, a coming clash between a revived Roman Empire, a military and political alliance that Scripture refers to as “the Beast,” and “the king of the South,” a leader who from all appearances will emerge from the Islamic world.
Revelation 17 shows that the Beast power, a successor to the ancient Roman Empire, will come about very rapidly: “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. These are of one mind, and they will give their power and authority to the beast” (Revelation 17:12-13).
The same chapter shows that the Roman church will be heavily involved in this final revival of the Roman Empire (verse 9).
In the Old Testament book of Daniel, we read of a clash between this power, called “the king of the North,” and “the king of the South.” Daniel 11:40 reveals that “at the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships.”
In the same month that the pope made his comments on the nature of Islam, a significant European presence was once again taking shape in the Middle East at the request of the Israeli and Lebanese governments. Following their recent monthlong conflict, a UN-sponsored peacekeeping force is being deployed in southern Lebanon with the aim of preventing Hezbollah from attacking Israel and averting another conflict between Israel and Lebanon.
“It's Europe's moment in the Arab-Israeli arena,” says former U.S. ambassador to Israel Martin Indyk, who now heads a Washington, D.C., think tank (“Just a Moment, or Possibly More,” The Economist, Sept. 2).
In a further sign of a buildup toward greater conflict, “the extraordinary buildup of European naval and military strength in and around Lebanon's shores is way out of proportion for the task the European contingents . . . have undertaken: to create a buffer between Israel and Hizballah . . .
“It is linked to the general anticipation of a military clash between the United States and Israel, on one side, and Iran and possibly Syria on the other” (“'Lebanese Security' Is the Pretext for the Naval Babel Around Lebanon's Shores,” www.debka.com, Sept. 4).
Implicit in this commentary is the fact that Europe and America continue to be in disagreement over the Middle East.
Clearly there is great danger of the continuing conflict between the West and Islam worsening yet further.
Christians know that the prophesied end-time events center on the Middle East. They can also be reassured by the fact that ultimately there will be peace in this area and throughout the world. A central focus of Bible prophecy is the coming Kingdom of God (Mark 1:14). Jesus Christ is set to return to save humanity from itself (Matthew 24:22).
The “Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6) will return to firmly establish His Kingdom. He will “judge between many peoples, and rebuke strong nations afar off” and “they shall beat their swords into plowshares” (Micah 4:3). In the coming Kingdom of God, we will see an end to the constant conflict between Islam and the West. GN

Does the Koran Promote Peace and Cooperation?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

All are quoted from the Dawood translation of the Koran.
• “Fight against them until idolatry [worship of any god other than Allah] is no more and [Allah's] religion [Islam] reigns supreme” (Sura 2:193).
• “Let those who would exchange the life of this world for the hereafter, fight for the cause of [Allah]; whoever fights for the cause of [Allah], whether he dies or triumphs, on him we shall bestow a rich recompense . . . The true believers fight for the cause of [Allah], but the infidels fight for the devil. Fight then against the friends of Satan” (Sura 4:74-76).
• “Those that make war against Allah and His apostle [Muhammad] and spread disorder in the land shall be slain or crucified or have their hands and feet cut off on alternate sides, or be banished from the land. They shall be held up to shame in this world and sternly punished in the hereafter” (Sura 5:33).
• “Believers, take neither Jews nor the Christians for your friends. They are friends with one another. Whoever of you seeks their friendship becomes one of their number. [Allah] does not guide the wrongdoers” (Sura 5:51).
• “[Allah] revealed His will to the angels, saying: 'I shall be with you. Give courage to the believers. I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, strike off the very tips of their fingers!' That was because they defied [Allah] and His apostle [Muhammad]. He that defies [Allah] and His apostle shall be sternly punished by [Allah]” (Sura 8:12-13).
• “[Allah] will separate the wicked from the just. He will heap all the wicked [i.e. non-Muslims] one upon another and cast them into Hell. These will surely be the losers” (Sura 8:37).
• “Let not the unbelievers [non-Muslims] think that they will ever get away. Muster against them all the men and cavalry at your command, so that you may strike terror into the enemy of [Allah] and your enemy, and others besides them who are unknown to you but known to [Allah]” (Sura 8:59-60).
• “Prophet, rouse the faithful to arms. If there are twenty steadfast men among you, they shall vanquish two hundred; and if there are a hundred, they shall rout a thousand unbelievers, for they are devoid of understanding” (Sura 8:65).
• “A prophet may not take captives until he has fought and triumphed in the land” (Sura 8:67).
• “Make war on them. [Allah] will chastise them at your hands and humble them” (Sura 9:14).
• “Believers, why is it that when you are told: 'March in the cause of [Allah],' you linger slothfully in the land? Are you content with this life in preference to the life to come? Few indeed are the blessings of this life, compared with those of the life to come. If you do not go to war, He will punish you sternly, and will replace you by other men . . . March on and fight for the cause of [Allah], with your wealth and with your persons” (Sura 9:38-41).
• “Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fate” (Sura 9:73).
• “They [faithful Muslims] will fight for the cause of [Allah], they will slay and be slain” (Sura 9:111).
• “Believers, make war on the infidels who dwell around you. Deal firmly with them. Know that [Allah] is with the righteous” (Sura 9:123).
• “When We resolve to raze a city, We first give warning to those of its people who live in comfort. If they persist in sin, judgment is irrevocably passed, and We destroy it utterly” (Sura 17:16).
• “We have destroyed many a sinful nation and replaced them by other men. And when they felt Our might they took to their heels and fled. They were told: 'Do not run away. Return to your comforts and to your dwellings. You shall be questioned all.' 'Woe betide us, we have done wrong' was their reply. And this they kept repeating until We mowed them down and put out their light” (Sura 21:11-15).
• “When you meet the unbelievers on the battlefield strike off their heads and, when you have laid them low, bind your captives firmly. Then grant them their freedom or take a ransom from them, until war shall lay down her burdens” (Sura 47:4).
• “Mohammed is [Allah's] apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another” (Sura 48:29).
• “It is He [Allah] who has sent forth His apostle [Muhammad] with guidance and the True Faith [Islam], so that he may exalt it above all religions, much as the idolaters [those who worship gods other than Allah] may dislike it” (Sura 61:9).

Names and Reputations

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632. Please follow this site here.

“ A good name is to be chosen rather than great riches ,” (Proverbs 22:1, NKJV).  While Christians should agree with that statement in Proverbs, do we really believe it?  To make my point, let me tell the stories of two names that illustrate two different lives, but both speak to the truth of Proverbs 22:1.
Many years ago when Al Capone virtually owned Chicago he had a lawyer nicknamed “Easy Eddie.”  Capone was notorious for spreading throughout Chicago every kind of vice from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.  Eddie was Capone's lawyer because Eddie was very good – in fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Capone out of jail for a long time. Consequently, Capone paid him very well and made him a partner in many of his “legitimate” businesses.  Over time it became obvious even to those close to Capone that it was only a matter of time until Federal prosecutors brought the Capone empire down.  Easy Eddie decided to go to the authorities and help them with their case against Capone – more to save his own skin than anything else.  Within the year, Easy Eddie's life ended at a Chicago intersection – shot several times with big-game shotgun slugs.  This was November 1939.
The second story involves an Army Air Corps pilot during WWII named Lieutenant Commander Butch O'Hare.  Butch was the section leader of Fighting Squadron 3 on February 20, 1942, one of six Wildcats sent into the air to protect the U.S.S. Lexington from Japanese bombers.  O'Hare and his wingman spotted the enemy planes first.  The wingman's guns jammed, however, and the other four planes were too far away, so O'Hare faced 9 twin-engine Japanese bombers alone.  He shot down five of them and damaged a sixth before other U.S. fighters arrived.  No enemy bombs made it to the Lexington.  For his bravery Butch was awarded The Medal of Honor citation will called his actions “… one of the most daring, if not the most daring, single action in the history of combat aviation …”  Butch was killed in November of 1943 during the battle for the Gilbert Islands in the South Pacific.  He was accidentally shot down by another American plane during a night mission.
What is the point of these two very different stories from two very different lives and priorities?  Easy Eddie’s real name was Eddie O’Hare – father to Butch.  Eddie is all but forgotten in spite of his part of that violent chapter in Chicago’s history, but because of the heroics of Butch, the city of Chicago decided to name their then new airport after him – O’Hare International Airport.
The following verses in Proverbs summarize these two different men succinctly.  “ The rich and the poor have this in common, the Lord is the maker of them all.  A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself, but the simple pass on and are punished.  By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life, ” (Proverbs 22:2-4).  The choices for us are as simple as the choices that Eddie and Butch faced – a life lived for short term wealth and power or a life lived to serve others for a greater purpose.  As Moses recorded God’s instruction in Deuteronomy 30:19-20, “ I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days….”
What reputation and what life will we chose?

Kingdoms at War Handwriting on the Wall

What did that strange message mean for the king of Babylon long ago? What should it mean for you today?

Transcript

[Darris] Intoxicated by the splendor in the king’s palace, the lords and ladies present had no idea of the danger of the moment. Out of nowhere the fingers of a man’s hand appeared and began writing on the wall of the room.
The king and all present became so frightened they broke out in sweat and staggered at the sight of a floating hand scratching out a coded message on the plastered wall. When finished, the words, “MENE MENE TEKEL UPHARSIN” stood in stark relief, before the eyes of the astonished gathering.
What was this strange message? What did it mean for the king of Babylon? What does it mean for our world today?
Join us on Beyond Today as we present: “Kingdoms at War: The Handwriting on the Wall.”
[Announcer] Join our host, Darris McNeely on Beyond Today !
[Darris] Look around at today’s world. Let me ask you this question: Are we, are you, big enough, great enough to rise to the challenge of our time?
Let’s look at what is facing the nations today.
The Middle East is aflame. One nation, Iran, seeks to develop nuclear weapons. Their goal will continue despite a recent treaty concluded in Vienna, Austria stating that “Iran’s nuclear program will be exclusively peaceful” and that “Iran will under no circumstances seek, develop, or acquire nuclear weapons.”
Now Iran is the same nation whose leaders incite its people to chant “death to Israel” and “death to America.” Its fundamentalist Shiite Muslim leadership sponsors terrorism throughout the Middle East; in Syria, Iraq and Yemen. No leader in the Middle East believes this recent treaty agreement with Iran will lessen the tensions of the region. Clear thinking leaders believe Iran will continue plans to develop a weapon of mass destruction. When they get it, they will use it to further their apocalyptic mission. It’s not a matter of if but when.
This goes along with what we’ve been discussing in this series of Beyond Today programs, Kingdoms at War . In part one , we saw that there are spiritual powers at work in our world today—things happening in the spirit realm affect what happens in our physical realm.
The rulers of Iran are fundamentalist Muslims who seek to establish Islamic rule in the entire world. World leaders led by America have unfortunately appeased this totalitarian regime.
Let’s look at another region. Europe has had a very rough period. The European Union has faltered in its plan to grow an ever closer utopian form of union among the nations of the European peninsula—a region that has seen so much war and strife in the last century. The goal of peace through economic and social cooperation has fallen upon a critical moment with the economic instability of Greece. EU leadership will be forced to correct this flaw, if not now, then at some point in the future.
What these two current world events mean can be understood by the story of the handwriting on the wall. Just as God was moving among the nations of Daniel’s day—rearranging the power structure then—so He is today, moving to accomplish His purpose in history among the nations. There is a greater spiritual purpose behind today’s headlines. That’s what we are saying in this series of Kingdoms at War  .
I said earlier that we live in big times with large challenges. Again I have to ask, are we big enough people to rise to the challenge of the day? Are we big enough people to see the handwriting on the wall of our times and listen to its meaning? We live in very serious times. We have to be able to read the handwriting on our own wall. Just like Daniel did on that night in Babylon so long ago.
Let’s go back to the story I opened with. It’s told in the biblical book of Daniel. We have been progressing through a series of programs based on this most fascinating of biblical prophecies. The book of Daniel, in your Bible, is a story of kingdoms at war during one of the most crucial periods of all world history. The prophet Daniel lived at a moment of great change and upheaval in the world of his time. Daniel was an intelligent Israelite taken captive to Babylon when Jerusalem fell in the year 586 B.C. He found himself promoted to a key role in the court of King Nebuchadnezzar II, the king of Babylon and the Chaldean Empire that spread itself across the Middle East.
Daniel spent his adult life working in the courts of power of two kingdoms, the kingdom of Babylon and the kingdom of Persia. And God gave Daniel the gift of understanding to interpret dreams and prophecies and even the strangest of sights, the handwriting of a floating hand that appeared on the banquet room of Belshazzar the last Babylonian king. When we look at the events of that night, we can see the example of God’s gift to this devout and righteous prophet, a man who stood before great kings and witnessed to the glory and majesty of the God of Heaven.
Daniel’s example shows us what kind of person it takes to rise to the challenge of great moments in history and be an example of the power of the Spirit of God moving, not only upon the face of the earth, but in the noble life of one who humbly seeks to do God’s will.
In Daniel 5, we see the story. A hand appeared from nowhere and wrote on the wall of the king’s dining room in front of the hundreds of drunken guests. When the king saw this “…his face turned pale with fright. His knees knocked together in fear and his legs gave way beneath him.” (Daniel 5:6 NLT)
The king cried out, “whoever reads this writing, and tells me its interpretation, shall be clothed with purple and have a chain of gold around his neck and he will be the third ruler in the kingdom” (Daniel 5:6-7).
None of his trusted counselors were able to interpret the handwriting on the wall. In walked his queen and said to him, “There is a man in your kingdom in whom is the Spirit of the Holy God. And in the days of your father, light and understanding and wisdom, like the wisdom of the gods, were found in him; and King Nebuchadnezzar your father—made him chief of the magicians, astrologers, Chaldeans and soothsayers. Inasmuch as an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, interpreting dreams, solving riddles, and explaining enigmas were found in this Daniel…now let Daniel be called, and he will give the interpretation” (Daniel 5:11-12).
Daniel was called in. He was offered the great reward of honor, with wealth and status for interpreting the handwriting. What Belshazzar did not understand was that Daniel was not a man who could be flattered or influenced by these symbols of power. Daniel had stood before this king’s father, Nebuchadnezzar. Daniel had actually warned that king, who was a powerful and a temperamental dictator who could have disposed of Daniel’s life with just a wave of his hand—that if he did not humble himself before the God of Heaven, he would become like an ignorant beast of the field reduced to eating grass with the barest scraps of clothing on his body. That did happen. And Belshazzar knew that it did. But Belshazzar had not learned the lesson.
So Daniel told him, “You have lifted yourself up against the Lord of heaven. [You] brought the vessels of His house before you, and you and your lords, your wives and your concubines, have drunk wine from them. You have praised the gods of silver and gold, bronze and iron, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or know; and the God who holds your breath in His hand and owns all your ways, you have not glorified” (Daniel 5:23).
This king, Belshazzar, this king was not big enough for the challenging times of his day. At that moment, the Persian Empire was at the gates of the Babylonian Empire. Persia, was now on the verge of replacing Babylon on the top rung of the ladder of nations. All this had been foretold by God through the prophet Isaiah, about 150 years earlier. Daniel was at this moment announcing to the Babylonian king that the God of Heaven was in charge of history and He was setting a new kingdom at the head of all the others.
What did the handwriting on the wall say? What should we learn from its message? We’ll come back to that in a moment. But first, let me tell about a free offer to help you better understand Bible prophecy.

The mysterious handwriting on the wall—what did it say to the Babylonian king that night long ago? More important, what is the message we need to take with us today? We are living in a period of great change in today’s world. Nations and their power structures are realigning. Weaknesses are being exposed. Cultural shifts are taking place that are shocking to many. Where is it leading and what does it mean?
Let’s read on in Daniel’s book and understand. Belshazzar, king of Babylon in a night of drunken revelry had ordered the gold and silver vessels once used for a holy purpose in God’s Temple in Jerusalem brought into the room. These cups and bowls were then used as props in a mockery and affront to God. It was an action that went too far. Even God has a point with a culture when enough is enough.
Out of the darkness appeared a hand from God that wrote the following words across the wall of the banquet room:
MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN.
Daniel turned to the king and gave the interpretation of the inscription this way.
“MENE” he said means, “God has numbered your kingdom, and finished it.
“TEKEL: You have been weighed in the balances, and found wanting.”
“PERES:”—which is a singular form of the same word upharsin—“Your kingdom has been divided, and given to the Medes and Persians.”
It was a listing of monetary units. Money. God was numbering, weighing and dividing out units of money in a graphic display of displeasure with the great nation of the time. Babylon, the great city and kingdom, a fierce and violent nation had been examined by God and found unworthy of continuing in power. It was being invaded and given to a new kingdom, that of the Medes and the Persians.
Why was money used here as a symbol of examination and judgment? It was very appropriate. Babylon was a wealthy nation that traded across the world of its day. Wealth and money flowed into the city making it the center of international finance. Babylon was a city that saw money flow into it like great gushing streams of water. The prophet Jeremiah had said that it was a people “who dwell by many waters, abundant in treasure” (Jeremiah 51:13). Babylon, the temples of the cities served as both a place of religious worship to the many gods but also it was where the money centers took place, the financial institutions of the time. The priests were the bankers and the financial managers. Kings came and went, but in Babylon the priests controlled the purse strings and through religion they held control on the people. It was a singular arrangement that Scripture shows will be important for end time Bible prophecy.
Back to the story in Daniel though. Using the most elemental component of the Babylonian society, money, wealth, gold, and silver, God was showing the nation was bankrupt when it came to morals, culture, religion and government. In God’s measure of values, Babylon’s accounts had run dry. Spiritually they were done. In God’s system of righteous judgment, Babylon’s day in the sun was over.
Here is another lesson. We read in the New Testament that many of Jesus Christ’s parables deal with the use of money, or talents, or shekels to describe deep spiritual principles and lessons. A nobleman goes into a far country to receive a kingdom and he leaves “ten minas” or ten units of currency for his servants to use and to develop and grow. He returns and the nobleman takes account to see if the investment has grown (Luke 19:12-15). Christ is teaching in that parable about growth in spiritual character by using a unit of money exchange. He does the same in other parables such as a “pearl of great price” or by buying a field to illustrate the Kingdom of God. In these parables, Jesus is teaching deep eternal truths through the units of money. How we value and use money and wealth, the things and the stuff of this life reflect our deepest spiritual character and values.
God judges us on these matters. Babylon was finished as a world power. Its influence would continue to flow however, through history and remains very much with us today. But in the moment of Daniel, there was a change of power. Daniel on that night, revealed to the king God’s message of judgement. And even in that moment the king did not understand. Belshazzar commanded Daniel to be clothed with purple, the symbol of royalty, and a chain of gold to be put around his neck and he proclaimed Daniel to be a third ruler in the kingdom (Daniel 5:29). It was all an empty gesture by a king who was completely out of touch with reality.
That very night, the king was killed and the Medo-Persian Empire came in. Babylon fell.
So I ask again, can we read the handwriting on the wall for our times? Can we discern what is happening among the nations of today’s world and see God’s hand moving through history even today? Nations and regions of the world are in turmoil. Danger is on the horizon. The cultural shifts occurring in America and other parts of the world give us great concern. We are standing at the crossroads of a rather confusing and sometimes chaotic landscape. The question: Do we have what it takes to stand up—to rise to the occasion and to meet these challenges? What will it take to stand against the howling winds of change and the shifting sands of our own day? We’ll examine that in a moment.

Here’s the question. Do we have what it takes to rise to the challenges today? Do we have the ability to stand in the face of strong prevailing winds of change and cultural shift that threatens to undermine our culture and our civilization?
Beyond Today is primarily an English-speaking program going out to America, Canada, Australia and South Africa. It is translated into Spanish and it’s aired far and wide on cable television and the Internet. But our primary audience lives in the developed world. And the handwriting is on the wall for our people—and they don’t know it.
Life is pretty good for most. Americans enjoy the highest standard of living ever known. The poorest among us live like kings compared to the people in other parts of the developing world, we have it very good. And yet even in the midst of the world’s wealthiest period, we have pockets of people who lack the basics and in real cases suffer from poverty. Social and economic problems we face in America and others nations reflect some very real effects.
We see racial strife erupting in the major cities of America, which reflects deep-seated anger stemming from a social structure that is not balanced, nor frankly reflects the values of godly biblical teaching.
There is a reason for this. We have cut ourselves off from God. We have not wanted to keep God and His laws in the center of public life for many decades. It has been a steady erosion of biblical values and teachings for more than 50 years. If you want to understand the reason behind the major events of recent times, the breakdown in whole segments of society or the headlong rush into a moral meltdown then look no further than three key events shaped by the United States Supreme Court. America’s highest judicial body has issued landmark rulings in three areas that reflect the country’s decline in the eyes of the God of Heaven.
In the early 1960s the Supreme Court issued two rulings in the use of prayer and Bible readings in public schools. The first, the justices ruled that official prayer had no place in public education. The second a year later, the court declared school-sponsored Bible reading and the recitation of the Lord’s Prayer unconstitutional. Both rulings were highly controversial at the time. While the decisions did not rule neither for nor against personal expressions of faith, they were a part of a period of cultural change that continues to this day. Looking back at those rulings, it seems no one could foresee what lay ahead in America. It was a significant step away from certain moral foundations that held America together like no other force. The court was ruling on a matter of spiritual import for a nation blessed with a unique place in the world—a place made possible by the God of Heaven. For a government to dismantle prayer within the public life for its people is a major step toward removing God from all public life. Perhaps even worse, it is the admission that God is not primary in the life of the public!
The second, in 1973, the Supreme Court decided another significant landmark case: Roe v. Wade. This case legalized abortion in all 50 states of the union. It sanctioned the taking of an unborn life and labeled it a right guaranteed by the 14th amendment to the United States constitution. With this ruling, the Court entered the realm of judging when life within a mother’s womb is viable or not. Roe v. Wade set in motion a bitter public debate that continues to this day between those who lobby for a woman’s right versus those who support the sanctity of life which begins at conception. No other public issue has caused more division than this one. Since 1973, more than 55 million abortions have been legally performed in America alone.
It is inconceivable what this has meant to the loss of a quality of life in the land. But it has led to another appalling action. Aborted baby parts can be now used for other medical matters. This has led to the marketing, and the selling of the limbs and the organs of murdered children. Doctors and medical technicians have been shown on major news shows discussing the price of body parts laid out before them on medical trays. The thought and the sight of such scenes in America are appalling. Well might we ask, what has happened to our nation!? We are killing our souls and our spirit while living with such a morbid culture of death for so many decades. When a government does not protect its unborn life, it is deserving of the judgement of the God of life. That judgement is coming, and sooner than we might think.
The third ruling by the Supreme Court came in June 2015 with a ruling legalizing same sex marriage in all states. In this ruling the court made a sweeping interpretation that marriage for same-sex couples is again guaranteed by the Constitution. Let’s be plain about this highly charged social issue. The United States Supreme Court has stepped beyond its temporal bounds into the spiritual realm of the Kingdom of God. It has decreed that the divine institution of marriage as defined in the Bible as a sacred union between a man and a woman, and this is the only biblical definition of marriage, is superseded by the Supreme Court’s judgment. Human law now sanctions as marriage a relationship God never intended, the Bible specifically forbids and nature itself must reject as abnormal.
With these rulings, America has crossed a line that I have to wonder if it’s impossible to regain. We have gone from a ruling against prayer and Bible reading in public schools to sanctioning killing the unborn, to ruling against the biblical definition of marriage. In a little more than 50 years these decisions have taken us down a path of open public defiance of God in our most elemental parts of our life. We have done what those at the Tower of Babel did. We have erected a defiant tower of idolatry that says, we will not be ruled by this God, we will become gods unto ourselves. We have sown more than five decades of rebellion and today are reaping the whirlwind of death and confusion. We grope blindly trying to see our way forward not knowing that we are poor and blind and miserable and naked. We wait, wondering. Wondering when God will act with a fire of judgment upon us. It is a generation that has spewed venom into the body and soul of life.
I wonder, and I have to share this with you, just where God might be in His evaluation of our world and life among the nations today. God has to stand looking around and seeing the state of affairs and pausing in thought, wondering when to put a stop to this. I don’t know when that might occur but I do know that we must come to a place and the time in our lives when we must act to take ourselves away from this generation and turn toward God and change our ways.
I ask whether we are big enough for the challenge of our times. For you and me, the challenge is to turn away from this world and begin to live by the teachings of the world to come, the Kingdom of God. That in itself determines whether we can face the challenges with the only power that makes a real difference: God’s Holy Spirit and the teaching of the Kingdom of God.
Daniel in his day in Babylon stood for the Kingdom of God in the midst of the raging wars of the kingdoms of Babylon and Persia. For Daniel, the choice was clear. God’s Kingdom, the way and the truth he had known since a child, was true. The God he served was the one true God who lives, unlike the gods of stone and wood and silver and bronze that he saw in the temples of Babylon. For Daniel, the collapse of his own nation of Israel was done at the will of the hand of his God and served a greater purpose. The gods of Babylon were empty and worthless, unable to hear nor see and clearly unable to prevent the demise of Babylon.
Now is the time for you to be like Daniel—to read the handwriting on the wall of our time and seek to understand the will of the God of Heaven.

The king and lords and ladies of Babylon were not great enough for their times. Are we? Are you, up to the challenge of our times? Too many tread endless circles of mediocrity and accept shabby lies and fictions of today’s culture as truth. The result is we build our homes on shifting sands. When the winds of difficulty blow, they may not stand. It’s a very sobering thought.
The time is now to take action. The time is now to see the handwriting on the wall and rise to a higher calling and a higher way of life. The time is now to seek the God of Heaven and to live.
The handwriting is on the wall. Can you read what it says and move to change your life?
