The Grand Design of Stephen Hawking's Universe

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

The Grand Design of Stephen Hawking's Universe
A commentary by Randy Stiver
United Church of God pastor
Posted September 16, 2010

One hot summer afternoon at a church youth campout I asked about a dozen and a half thoughtful teenagers in my congregation to consider a key point from legendary physicist Stephen Hawking's most recent book The Grand Design.

I read the following excerpts from the London Telegraph of Sept. 2 for their analysis:

"Hawking said: 'Because there is a law such as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist...'

"In June this year Prof Hawking told a Channel 4 series that he didn't believe that a 'personal' God existed. He told Genius of Britain: 'The question is: is the way the universe began chosen by God for reasons we can't understand, or was it determined by a law of science? I believe the second.'"

I asked the teens to analyze those statements. To be fair, I had to read them twice. It was hot and they'd stayed up late the night before sitting around the campfire, visiting and admiring the constellations that are impossible to see from their own backyards in the city. Their mental wheels were turning, but they needed one more reading, emphasizing the key phrases—"Because there is a law such as gravity" and "the universe...was...determined by a law of science."

Suddenly they had it! One of the girls articulated the problem first. Although the great professor understood the amazing complexity of modern scientific thinking, he was presupposing the existence of the natural laws of physics that govern the universe. (Or, instead of universe, shall we say "multiverse" to reflect the current "M-theory" that conjectures we live in one of many existing universes?)

Smart kids
Another of the teens chimed in, voicing the real killer question that defeats modern atheistic thinking: "Where did the laws of physics come from?"

Stephen Hawking and his coauthor and leading Caltech physicist Leonard Mlodinow reason from the premise that those laws do exist. We expected that because that's where most of modern science starts thinking. Based on the laws of physics, they can envision things like the Big Bang origin of the—or at least our—universe.

So Professor Hawking said, "Because there is such a law as gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing." But as Julie Andrews, playing Maria in The Sound of Music, sang with remarkable scientific veracity, "Nothing comes from nothing; nothing ever could"!

The point is, the laws of physics are not nothing. Even our tired teenagers knew that.

The law gap
This is a great gap in atheistic thinking: the existence of physical law.

So where do laws come from?

Consider the specific evidence of the laws of society. National and local laws do not simply generate themselves, nor can we claim that they have always existed. They originate with people.

Likewise, where did the laws of physics that intricately govern the universe come from? Because these physical laws are so powerful and constant, they must come from a transcendently powerful lawmaker and sustainer (law enforcer). It's ludicrous to simply claim that the laws of physics, mathematics, chemistry and other sciences have just always existed.

What's the conclusion? In spite of and with respect for Professors Hawking's and Mlodinow's credentials and expertise, there is a God. That God is the great Lawmaker and Sustainer who created the laws of physics that govern the universe of His making.

Turtle laws of physics
Stephen Hawking included a wonderful story with an unexpected lesson on the first page of his 1988 best-seller, A Brief History of Time.

"A well-known scientist...once gave a public lecture on astronomy. He described how the earth orbits around the sun and how the sun, in turn, orbits around the center of a vast collection of stars called our galaxy. At the end of the lecture, a little old lady...said: 'What you have told us is rubbish. The world is really a flat plate supported on the back of a giant tortoise.' The scientist gave a superior smile before replying, 'What is the tortoise standing on?' 'You're very clever, young man, very clever,' said the old lady. 'But it's turtles all the way down!'"

For modern science to claim that the laws of physics have always existed with no Lawmaker is like saying, "It's turtles all the way back."

Yet at the same time Professor Hawking was absolutely correct to choose as the title for his book The Grand Design, because, in fact, there was and is a grand design being worked out here below and you can be a part of it!

Eurabia: A Voice Cries Out in Defense of Europe's Heritage

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

Eurabia: A Voice Cries Out in Defense of Europe's Heritage
With birthrates among traditional Europeans in decline while population growth in Europe's Muslim communities soar, one European voice asks whether Europe wants to preserve its cultural and religious identity.
by Paul Kieffer
Members of Western democratic parliaments are known to voice concerns on issues beyond their own national borders. Topics like human rights, poverty, AIDS in the developing world and other issues sometimes echo from the halls of Congress, the British Parliament, Germany's Bundestag and elsewhere.

Perhaps the most memorable example of a member of parliament (MP) speaking out on a perceived danger abroad was British MP Winston Churchill during the 1930s. On numerous occasions Churchill warned his country of the danger it faced from the ascent of German dictator Adolf Hitler. Accused of "scaremongering," Churchill did not relent. When British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain returned as a hero from his 1938 meeting in Munich with Hitler, proclaiming "peace in our time," Churchill predicted a future "day of reckoning."

The rest of the story is history.

For the last six years a Western European politician has made it his mission in life to warn his own countrymen—and anyone else in Europe who will listen—about a threat staring Europe in the face within its own continental borders. The threat he perceives is the demise of Europe's traditional cultural and religious identity as a result of the gradual Islamization of Europe.

Who is he? He is Geert Wilders, a member of the Dutch parliament and a vocal opponent of "Eurabia."

Who is Geert Wilders?
Some readers of World News and Prophecy may not recognize Geert Wilders' name. After all, the Netherlands is not one of the world's larger countries and most people—even in Europe—do not follow the Dutch domestic political scene closely. Wilders is 47 years old and was born in the city of Venlo on the Dutch-German border. He was raised a Roman Catholic but left the church upon reaching adulthood. Despite leaving the Catholic Church, Wilders supports what he calls "Judeo-Christian values."

After completing his education, Wilders traveled to the Middle East, where he lived in Israel for a time and also visited some of the neighboring Arab countries. The impressions he took home from those visits have shaped his personal assessment of Islam, which he says is similar to the viewpoint of none other than Winston Churchill. Churchill, as a young man, served as a soldier and war correspondent in the late 1890s in British India (in what is today Pakistan) and the Sudan.

Churchill summed up his perception of Islam's effects on its adherents: "The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist...Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities—but the influence of the religion paralyzes the social development of those who follow it."

And Churchill concluded: "No stronger retrograde force exists in the world" (The River War, 1899).

At the beginning of his political career, Wilders worked as a speechwriter for the conservative-liberal People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). He moved to Utrecht in 1996 and was elected to the city council and in 2002 to the lower house of the Dutch parliament.

Wilders had problems with his party's position on admitting Turkey as a member of the European Union, leading him to form his own party in 2004, now called the Party for Freedom (PVV). EU membership for Turkey would eventually mean more Muslims living elsewhere in Europe, although Wilders already sees Europe's cultural and religious heritage threatened by the current Muslim population of Europe. Wilders points out that 100 years ago there were fewer than 100 Muslims living in the Netherlands, compared to nearly 1 million today out of a total population of some 16 million.

Wilders pulls no punches about his desire to see limits placed on the influence of Islam in the Netherlands and Europe. He is against the use of any language but Dutch in mosques located in the Netherlands. He also opposes the construction of new mosques in his country.

Speaking in the Dutch parliament, he once said that the Koran should be banned in the Netherlands, adding that if Islam's holy book were to be stripped of passages proclaiming violence, it would be reduced to the size of a comic book.

With this opinion, Wilders is on the same page as Pope Benedict XVI. In a speech given in Regensburg in September 2006, Benedict quoted a medieval Christian emperor who equated Islam with violence: "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached."

Accused of being a racist, Wilders counters by saying that he does not hate Muslims. Instead, he just hates Islam. On his own blog, Wilders summarizes that viewpoint: "The purpose of Islam is the total submission of oneself and others to the unknowable Allah, whom we must serve through total obedience to Muhammad as leader of the Islamic state (suras 3:31, 4:80, 24:62, 48:10, 57:28). And history has taught us that Muhammad was not at all a prophet of love and compassion, but a mass murderer, a tyrant and a pedophile. Muslims could not have a more deplorable role model."

Growing popularity and power
Geert Wilders is typically characterized by the mainstream media as being a right-wing populist, an anti-Islam agitator or xenophobic. And yet twice in annual public opinion surveys he was rated the second-most-popular politician in the Netherlands. In order to remain independent, his PVV refuses to accept a government subsidy available during election campaigns (all other Dutch parties accept the government subsidy).

In June's parliamentary elections, Geert Wilders' party, the PVV, won 24 of the 150 seats in the lower house, a remarkable increase over its previous result of nine seats in 2006. Wilders has agreed to support a minority coalition government formed by two other conservative parties, which will give him considerable leverage in the new government.

Wilders has had to pay a price for his stance on Islam, however. He has received numerous death threats and has been constantly accompanied by six bodyguards since a letter threatening his death was found in the apartment of the Islamic fanatic who assassinated Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh in broad daylight on a street in Amsterdam in November 2004. His bodyguards "stand outside the door when I go to the bathroom," he once said.

Wilders never sleeps two nights in a row in the same location. Because of these security restrictions, he is able to see his wife only once every two weeks. Wilders has described his life as "essentially living in a prison."

Muslim population growth in Europe
Wilders sees the increasing Muslim population in Europe as one of the most serious threats to the preservation of Europe's traditional cultural and religious heritage. It comes as no surprise that he opposes continued immigration from Islamic countries and Turkey's bid for full EU membership, which would eventually open Europe's gates to unrestricted Turkish immigration.

Muslims currently account for about 5 percent of the European Union's population. If Turkey's bid for EU membership is successful, on the day Turkey becomes a member the percentage of Muslims living in the EU will increase to 20 percent. But current population numbers are only part of the story. Turkey would also soon be the EU's largest country. Based on current population trends, Turkey will surpass Germany's 82 million inhabitants by the year 2020 and may have as many as 100 million people by the year 2050.

However, even if Turkey does not become a full member of the European Union, the percentage of Muslims living in Europe will double within 15 years. Europe's Islamic community is experiencing a population explosion. At the same time, the traditional non-Muslim population of Europe will decline by an estimated 3.5 percent. Europe's traditional non-Islamic population is slowly but surely dying out.

Germany's birthrate is a prime example of the population decline among Europe's traditional nationalities. Statistically each woman in Germany currently has 1.36 live births during her childbearing years, far below the 2.1 average considered necessary to maintain a country's population. Given current trends, the research by the private Institute for Population and Development in Berlin indicates that the number of children born in Germany will drop 50 percent by the year 2050.

The declining birthrate is most acute in the former East Germany, where the average birthrate since the unification of Germany in 1990 is 0.77 live births. Reiner Klingholz, the director of the private Berlin Institute for Population and Development, summarized the situation with some humor: "With the Vatican as the exception, that's the lowest birthrate anywhere in the world."

If this situation continues unhindered, it is only a matter of time before the Islamic community in Europe becomes a sizable minority and even a majority of Europe's total population. In 2005, for example, there were more children of Islamic parentage born in France than people of a traditional French background.

Although not directly related to Europe's declining birthrate, it is also interesting to note that the number of Europeans who profess to be Christians has declined noticeably in the last 100 years. In 1900 approximately 95 percent of Europeans were members of the Christian faith. At the beginning of the 21st century that percentage had dropped to 75 percent, with a sharp increase in the decline just in the last 25 years.

For example, since 1980 the population segment that identifies itself as Christian in Belgium declined by 20 percent; in the Netherlands, by 18 percent; and in France, by 16 percent. Today's Europe is also the only continent witnessing a decline in the number of Catholics. The annual number of infant baptisms in the Philippines is now more than the combined annual total for France, Italy, Poland and Spain.

If the present trends continue, Europe will slowly become what Geert Wilders calls "Eurabia"—a continent whose traditional heritage becomes drowned out by a fast-growing Muslim community—now a minority, but possibly a majority of Europe's population in the future.

Europe's religious future
Bible prophecy shows that Europe's traditional religious heritage will wield considerable influence in the future, but in a way not imagined by Dutch MP Geert Wilders. The book of Revelation contains a prophecy about 10 kings who collectively form a "beast" that Jesus Christ will conquer and destroy upon His return to the earth.

We read about them in Revelation 17:12-14: "The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast... These will make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb will overcome them" (emphasis added).

Those 10 horns are part of a "beast" described in verse 3 as having "seven heads and ten horns," with the 10 horns—the final 10 kings who will fight against Christ—apparently representing one of the seven heads. Each of the seven heads is a "mountain"—biblical symbolism for a kingdom or empire—with its king (verses 9-10). Verse 10 clarifies that the heads appear in chronological sequence, and the final "head," or king (verse 10), will appear as the 10 kings symbolized by 10 horns (verse 12).

This sequence of rulers is dominated by a religious system called "Babylon the Great" that emanates from "the great harlot [city] who sits on many waters, with whom the kings of the earth committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth were made drunk with the wine of her fornication" (Revelation 17:1-2). The true Church of God is pictured in the Bible as a chaste bride waiting to be married to Christ. The harlot of Revelation 17 is a deceptive religious system masquerading as a true system of worship.

As the modern heir of ancient Babylon's mystery religion, the city of Rome is described as "drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus" (Revelation 17:6). It is a historical fact that Rome, more than any other city, under the influence of a great religious system, has orchestrated the persecution and martyrdom of "those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus" (Revelation 14:12). Even early church writers recognized the connection between Babylon and Rome by interpreting Peter's use of the word "Babylon" in 1 Peter 5:13 to mean the city of Rome.

Pictured as a harlot sitting astride the "beast" of which she is the cultural and spiritual center, this infamous city has exerted a vast influence over the earth's "peoples, multitudes, nations and languages" (Revelation 17:15, New International Version). For a while she has enjoyed the status and fame of being the city that "reigns over the kings of the earth" (verse 18).

In other words, it appears that the composite "beast" of Revelation 17 is the so-called Holy Roman Empire—the resurrected Roman Empire dominated by the modern descendant of the ancient Babylonian mystery religion. The final resurrection of that empire will not be influenced by Islam, but by the same religious system that has dominated it since A.D. 554.

Geert Wilders and Europe's future
While no one can predict what course Geert Wilders' political future may take, it is interesting that his position on Muslim population growth in Europe is consistent with Bible prophecy. Islam has never been the religion of the Holy Roman Empire, nor will it be in the future. Since the "great harlot" of Revelation 17 is pictured as continually being the dominant influence on the "beast" system, the Islamic minority in Europe apparently will not grow to such an extent that it will prevent the traditional religious system of the Holy Roman Empire from exerting its influence in the end-time "beast" power.

With the fast-growing Islamic minority in Europe, what are the implications for Europe's future vis-à-vis the Islamic community and Islamic immigration? There would appear to be several possibilities—all of which could be listed as action points for Geert Wilders' Party for Freedom. They include the following:

• Immigration from non-EU, Islamic countries may be restricted at some point in the future.

• Residency for some—perhaps a majority—of non-EU Islamic people living in Europe may be revoked at some point in the future.

In the current liberal atmosphere in Europe, restricting immigration for people of the Islamic faith, or even deporting some of those who are already here, seems unlikely. However, the violent reaction in the Netherlands to the murder in broad daylight of Dutch movie producer Theo van Gogh by a Moroccan in November 2004 shows what can happen in a tense confrontation. Any restrictions placed on immigration from Islamic countries would certainly strain relations between the European Union and the Islamic world.

Meanwhile, Geert Wilders continues his efforts to preserve Europe's heritage from Islamic influence. In July Wilders announced an international "freedom alliance" to spread his anti-Islam message across the West.

He told the Associated Press in an interview that he will launch the international movement later this year, initially in five countries: the United States, Canada, Britain, France and Germany. This "is not just a Dutch problem...it is a problem for the entire free West," he said. Wilders has been invited to speak in Berlin on Oct. 2, 2010, to launch his movement in Germany. It is the first invitation he has received to speak in Germany since he founded his Party for Freedom, and Wilders plans to give his presentation in German.

With his effort to defend Europe's traditional heritage against growing Islamic influence, Geert Wilders is a man to watch. He would be surprised to learn what kind of resurgence of traditional religious fervor lies in Europe's future.

Despite the current demographic trends in Europe, Bible prophecy indicates that the dominant religious influence on the final resurrection of the Roman Empire will not be Islam. Instead, it will be the same one that has existed for centuries in previous revivals of the Holy Roman Empire—that of "Babylon the Great, the mother of harlots and of the abominations of the earth" (Revelation 17:5).

With the Muslim population explosion in Europe, the final configuration of that last resurrection of the Holy Roman Empire may occur sooner than some people think, while Europeans of a traditional heritage are still the obvious majority in Europe. WNP

The Missing Unemployment Statistics

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

The Missing Unemployment Statistics
A commentary by Melvin Rhodes
United Church of God pastor,

According to the Lansing State Journal (8/23), Michigan's hard hit economy is looking better. Unemployment has dropped from 15.2% to below 15%, the paper has twice reported.

I might feel a lot better if I could take this at face value. Unfortunately, the hard figures reveal a different story!

Unemployment is under reported
My son works for the state's department of unemployment, sometimes cynically described as "the fastest growing sector of the Michigan economy."

The reason unemployment figures are looking better, he explained, is because increasing numbers of people are coming off unemployment benefits.

Here is how it works.

Unemployed workers receive benefits for only a limited number of weeks. With extensions, people may now receive benefits for over a year but eventually they run out. That is now happening to more and more people.

My son also explained to me that 99,000 people in Michigan will have received all of their available state unemployment benefits by the end of this year. That means they could become destitute, with no income, no health insurance and unable to pay their mortgages—which indicates more foreclosures are to come!

Other unreported factors
That's not the only reason the unemployment numbers look better. People who move out of state are no longer counted as "unemployed." Nor are people who retire. Nor are the tens of thousands who have returned to their native countries. Nor are those who are in part time work, some earning as little as $50 per week. Nor are those who have had their hours and pay cut.

"CNN Newsroom" (Sunday August 23rd) predicted that 650,000 people across the United States will lose their unemployment benefits by the end of this year. This includes the 99,000 in Michigan. The prediction is that 4.4 million Americans will lose theirs before the economy recovers. That's 4.4 million people with no means of feeding themselves, short of lining up at the local soup kitchen.

It's not a pretty picture, no matter how you look at it. Things are clearly not getting any better.

One economist, not alone in his concern, wrote an op-ed in the Financial Times August 25th on the increasing likelihood of a double dip recession similar to the Great Depression. Following the Crash of 1929 the economy actually started to pick up, with the Stock Market making gains for five months in a row. Then the sixth month came and the rest is history.

Some are saying the same is likely now. The 'D' word is increasingly mentioned.
Talk of "Depression" is enough to make anyone depressed, on a personal level.

The economic upheavals that frequently plague our economies won't end until Christ returns and establishes a godly financial system. So, what should a Christian who trusts God and believes His written Word do in times like this?

The appropriate response!
The Bible clearly instructs each of us to "seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness (Matthew 6:33).

In addition to praying each day "Thy kingdom come" (Matthew 6:10, King James Version), Christians should also remember to ask: "Give us this day our daily bread" (verse 11). Previous generations had to do this—often in times more challenging than now.

In the western world we've taken far too much for granted and have consistently failed to thank our Creator for all the physical blessings He has given to us. Faced with losing everything, this is a good time to start thanking God every day for all that He has given us.

Maybe for a while government can help if you lose your job, but that help won't last. Besides, the government is rapidly going broke. The U.S. deficit is so great that the BBC said a new word will soon be needed to describe it (BBC World News, PBS, 25th August).

Christians should not take anxious thought for tomorrow (Matthew 6:34). Worry never helps. Do what you can to help yourself and ask God each day to help you provide for your family needs.

How long this recession (or depression) will last cannot be accurately predicted. One thing is certain. We must all accept a lower standard of living, going without some of the pleasures we once took for granted. However, we can take assurance from King David who observed: "I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his descendants begging bread" (Psalm 37:25).

As we go through this difficult time, let's all remember to pray more fervently, "Thy kingdom come." And for a really in depth understanding of what that Kingdom will be like, please request, read online or download our free booklet, The Gospel of the Kingdom.

Immigration: How a Foreign Invasion Is Reshaping the West

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

Immigration: How a Foreign Invasion Is Reshaping the West
In the last 50 years, millions of people from the Third World have moved into the Western democracies. Many have contributed to the welfare of these nations, but others lack work skills, proper education and democratic convictions. What will it mean if and when these ever-growing minorities begin to constitute the majority in several key countries?
by Melvin Rhodes
Suddenly, immigration is becoming a bigger issue throughout the Western world. Governments around the globe are very concerned about potential problems that massive immigration may bring.

The American state of Arizona, which borders Mexico, recently passed a law authorizing police to inquire of people they've stopped for other legitimate reasons if they are in the United States legally, should there be sufficient reason to suspect otherwise, and to ask for proof of their legal status in such case. Illegal immigrants have contributed to mounting crime, increasing health and educational costs and other problems in the state.

Most of Arizona's citizens support the law, though some organizations outside the state have announced boycotts, which could cost it a great deal. Even the federal government is considering filing lawsuits to prevent the law from being implemented.

Immigration reshaping Western countries
A car bomb placed in New York City's Times Square on May 1, 2010, was the 11th attempted terrorist act in the city of New York since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. The bomb—which, thankfully, failed to go off as planned—raised some deeply troubling questions about even legal immigration.

How could a young Pakistani immigrant who lived the American dream possibly want to kill hundreds of his fellow citizens? The United States and other Western democracies, still coming to terms with radical Islam, are finding it hard to fathom. It just doesn't fit into the multicultural ideal!

France, Belgium, Italy and other European countries are passing laws to block Islamic women from wearing full veils in public. Germany's Chancellor Angela Merkel is insisting the country's large Turkish population should assimilate, while the Turkish prime minister insists they should have their own separate schools to protect their Islamic identity.

Meanwhile, a Danish cartoonist whose cartoon depicting the prophet Muhammad led to riots in a number of countries was threatened by an ax-wielding intruder, and a Swedish cartoonist was physically attacked by protesters shouting "Allah is great!" as he gave a lecture on free speech. Muslims insist that freedom of speech, long cherished in the West, has its limits.

In Britain, the issue of immigration may have cost Prime Minister Gordon Brown the recent election. When a 65-year-old supporter of his own party approached him during the campaign and expressed concern about all the immigrants from Eastern Europe flowing into her neighborhood, Mr. Brown was overheard in his car describing her as a "bigoted woman." Leaders clearly don't like the sensitive issue of immigration being brought up.

But it's not going to go away.

Majorities becoming minorities in their own land
People are feeling increasingly threatened by the changing demographics in their own nations. The ethnic composition of Western countries is rapidly altering due to massive immigration in the last few decades. The United States alone took in 10 million more immigrants in the seven years following Sept. 11, 2001—many of them from countries rife with radical Islamists. To many citizens, this just doesn't make sense.

An increasing number of Americans are aware that these demographic changes will lead to a majority nonwhite population in their own lifetimes. How they handle this will determine the country's future. As Time magazine put it: "How the current majority reacts to its incipient minority status is the most crucial socio-demographic issue facing the country" (Gregory Rodriguez, "The White Anxiety Crisis," March 22, 2010, international edition).

In an amazing break from tradition, many Western nations changed their immigration policies after World War II and welcomed millions of people from the Third World. Even the United States, often deemed a cultural "melting pot," had an immigration policy prior to 1965 that favored maintaining the racial status quo.

The late Senator Edward Kennedy's 1965 immigration bill deliberately changed earlier policy, welcoming a big influx of immigrants from the world's poorer nations. At the time, Americans were assured it would not alter the ethnic mix and social fabric of their nation.

Now it's evident this assurance was false. One could easily make the argument that the election of America's first African-American president would not have happened without the reality of changing demographics.

Immigration leading to unrest
The issue of immigration was briefly discussed on NBC's Chris Matthews Show on May 9, 2010.

During the program, John Heilemann of New York magazine observed: "We're going through one of these once-in-a-century transformations that cuts across a lot of different things—cultural change, there's big demographic change, there's big economic change, and technological change, and it makes people really nervous. It's been going on for about 15 years in America—the sense of anxiety, the sense we've lost control of our lives."

Also on the show was Cynthia Tucker, a columnist with the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, who offered this perspective: "I've always thought that this great melting pot or salad, however you want to describe this diverse nation, works as long as the economy is good, as long as the pie is growing and every American believes he or she has an opportunity to get a piece of that pie, we're all pretty happy."

However, now that the economy is not doing so well, the United States could be in for a more stressful time when it comes to assimilating the various ethnic groups that now live in the country.

The same applies elsewhere, of course. Some of the eurozone countries are on the brink of financial collapse due to decades of overspending. Severe government spending cuts are inevitable. The nations have already seen unemployment rise. Without jobs, many are already blaming immigrants for their situation.

In the latest election in Britain, the anti-immigrant British National Party almost tripled the share of the vote it received in the 2005 election. In fact, anti-immigrant parties are seeing growing support in a number of European countries.

The perceived threat applies on several different levels.

Security a growing concern
Besides feeling that their way of life is threatened, both culturally and economically, people are also becoming more concerned about security as radical terror movements increasingly recruit homegrown terrorists. Commenting on the recent attempted bombing in Times Square, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies professor Fouad Ajami wrote the following in the May 10, 2010, Wall Street Journal:

"'A Muslim has no nationality except his belief,' the intellectual godfather of the Islamists, Egyptian Sayyid Qutb, wrote decades ago. Qutb's 'children' are everywhere now; they carry the nationalities of foreign lands and plot against them. The Pakistani-born Faisal Shahzad [who set up the car bomb] is a devotee of Sayyid Qutb's doctrine, and Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan, the Fort Hood shooter, was another.

"Qutb was executed by the secular dictatorship of [Egyptian President] Gamal Abdel Nasser in 1966. But his thoughts and legacy endure. Globalization, the shaking up of continents, the ease of travel, and the doors for immigration flung wide open by Western liberal societies have given Qutb's worldview greater power and relevance. What can we make of a young man like Shahzad working for [the cosmetics company] Elizabeth Arden, receiving that all-American degree, the MBA, jogging in the evening in Bridgeport, then plotting mass mayhem in Times Square?

"The Islamists are now within the gates. They fled the fires and the failures of the Islamic world but brought the ruin with them. They mock national borders and identities. A parliamentary report issued by Britain's House of Commons on the London Underground bombings of July 7, 2005, lays bare this menace and the challenge it poses to a system of open borders and modern citizenship.

"The four men who pulled off those brutal attacks, the report noted, 'were apparently well integrated into British society.' Three of them were second-generation Britons born in West Yorkshire. The oldest, a 30-year-old father of a 14-month-old infant, 'appeared to others as a role model to young people.' One of the four, 22 years of age, was a boy of some privilege; he owned a red Mercedes given to him by his father and was given to fashionable hairstyles and designer clothing...Two of the four, rather like Faisal Shahzad, had spent time in Pakistan before they pulled off their deed.

"A year after the London terror, hitherto tranquil Canada had its own encounter with the new Islamism. A ring of radical Islamists were charged with plotting to attack targets in southern Ontario with fertilizer bombs. A school-bus driver was one of the leaders of these would-be jihadists.

"A report by the Canadian Security Intelligence Service unintentionally echoed the British House of Commons findings. 'These individuals are part of Western society, and their "Canadianness" makes detection more difficult. Increasingly, we are learning of more and more extremists that are homegrown. The implications of this shift are profound'" ("Islam's Nowhere Men: Millions Like Faisal Shahzad Are Unsettled by a Modern World They Can Neither Master nor Reject," emphasis added).

Prophecy warned of consequences for national sins
The modern descendants of the ancient Israelites include many of the nations that make up today's Western world. In Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28, God promised tremendous physical blessings if they would obey Him, but He also warned them of the dire consequences of disobedience. The promised blessings for obedience are awe-inspiring; the assurances of punishment for sins are deeply troubling.

These chapters make for sobering reading when we consider trends in recent years. In Deuteronomy 32, verse 25 warns of "terror within"—a prophecy clearly being fulfilled now, with an even greater increase in the problem likely still to come.

The apostle Paul spoke of how God created "from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings" (Acts 17:26).

Of course, this passage does not mean that correctly controlled immigration is inherently wrong, seeing that when the Israelites left Egypt the door was opened for a certain number of non-Israelites to dwell among them. However, they had to leave their culture behind and abide by the same laws God gave the Israelites. We are now learning the negative consequences of the multicultural society that has been propagated for the last 50 years.

Mixing cultures, and especially religions, can be volatile! We should have known that before the change in immigration laws just by looking at history and at other societies where mixing religions has led to serious tension and conflict.

The people of Europe feel particularly threatened. With higher population densities than the United States and closer proximity to the volatile Middle East, many West European nations have significantly high Muslim populations. Add to this Europe's low birthrate in contrast to the high Islamic birthrate, and the potential for violent conflict only increases.

And as we've seen, it's not just security that is threatened. Economics also play a major role. God Himself warned of serious consequences for the native peoples as a result of immigration: "The alien who is among you shall rise higher and higher above you, and you shall come down lower and lower. He shall lend to you, but you shall not lend to him; he shall be the head, and you shall be the tail" (Deuteronomy 28:43-44).

In other words, the strangers—those of foreign cultures and religions—will end up on top, in control and in time possibly dictating a way of life foreign to the indigenous population.

This is, of course, exactly what happened when European settlers started arriving in North America, Australia and elsewhere—they ended up on top and in control, displacing the native populations. Now, two or three centuries later, they are the ones losing control to newer arrivals.

Immigration trends and birthrates show that sometime in this century the peoples who currently dominate most of the Western nations will be minorities in their own lands. Whatever you may think of the ethnic mix, the reality is that significant change is underway, and it's threatening no less than the future of Western civilization. GN

What can I do to increase my job security in an uncertain job market?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

What can I do to increase my job security in an uncertain job market?
With all the layoffs and financial troubles, how can I avoid unemployment and decrease my money worries?
With the current state of the world's economy, the unpleasant questions of job security and financial troubles are likely to be unwelcome visitors in the minds of many. The following tips, adapted from an article by Joann S. Lublin in the Wall Street Journal in December 2002 with biblical support added, could help you increase the longevity of your job.

Don't splurge; save.
Struggle to get yourself into a solvent financial position so that you are not threatened by every change of the financial wind. You may need to save money and tighten your belt to do that. We are bombarded with ads telling us how much we deserve a vacation in some exotic place, a new car, a new house or new furniture. Credit cards can make our financial controls difficult to handle. Fight the temptation to overspend.

Avoid anger, paralysis and panic.
Ecclesiastes 10:20 advises us not to curse those over us or say negative things because a "bird" may take your words to the boss. Fear and anxiety can lead to comments that make an employee expendable. "Jittery employees often quit at the first sign of an upcoming layoff. That may be a mistake," warns Linda R. Dominguez.

Give it your all.
Put time and effort into concentrating on the important tasks that will show you can adapt and are a valuable employee. Be sure your work is on time and well done. Go above and beyond. For example, a young man was hired for a job that took him around the company's property. He also made it his personal work to pick up litter that was lying around. Someone in charge saw this action and he was promoted. He now holds an important job with the firm.

Seek to improve.
Examine yourself to see if you are wasting time or effort in your job. Talking too much with others and taking extended coffee breaks are noticed by bosses who are concerned about efficiency. Take a good look at your dress and working habits—can you improve? Psalm 26:2 reveals David's request for God to examine him and test him. David wanted to know where he could improve. Paul tells us to examine ourselves (2 Corinthians 13:5). The principles that apply spiritually also work physically.

Explore alternate career paths.
This may seem like a contradiction to working hard for a company, but the advice, when taken properly, is a sign of a person who is thinking. Hope and plans for the future are vital to performance. Further education and training could make you more valuable in your present career or job, and it can open new doors for you when you are ready.

The Wall Street Journal article says, "Plot out a contingency plan." Of course, this planning must be done outside of work time and in a confidential way. But planning for the future does not mean you are disloyal. Mental health is enhanced by hopes and dreams of a future we want.

Intensify your networking efforts.
"Get involved with your professional organization right now—before you get laid off," suggests Lara Nolen. We need to know people and have contacts all over.

Exercise and maintain a positive attitude.
"Kick up your exercise program a little bit," recommends Marilyn Moats Kennedy. The apostle Paul told Timothy that bodily exercise profits us a little (compared to godliness, which profits us a lot; 1 Timothy 4:8). Remember that Paul wrote in the days when people walked everywhere. Exercise is even more necessary in our day. We probably sit more than any generation before us. We need to get our bodies in motion. We should also focus and meditate on positive things (Philippians 4:8).

Final thoughts from Scripture.
These points are not guaranteed, surefire ways to keep from ever losing your job. Unexpected changes in life can throw a monkey wrench into our plans and instantly change whatever course we had charted out. In Matthew 6:25-34, we are told not to worry about these things, but to "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).

Though we are certainly to give the jobs and challenges we face in this life the best effort we can, our focus is to be on God, keeping His commandments and seeking His Kingdom. A position there, unlike one in the job market, is the only one that is eternal, permanent and forever secure.

Where Can We Find Hopeful News?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

Where Can We Find Hopeful News?
A commentary by Jeremy Lallier
United Church of God staff writer

There are few things in life more depressing than the news of today.

It seems like every time I turn on the television, open a newspaper or browse the Internet, I'm bombarded with a flood of tragedies, injustices and crises. The other day, in the span of a few minutes, I found stories about 72 migrants found dead on a Mexican ranch, about eight tourists killed when a disgruntled ex-policeman took an entire bus hostage in the Philippines and about suicide bombings across Iraq that have killed dozens and injured hundreds.

Of course many people just skip by these worldwide travesties and read instead about the wacky shenanigans of a celebrity world devoid of any sort of moral compass—all the latest cheating, faux pas and drama. I find this smorgasbord of terrible decisions very depressing as well.

Every now and again, a snippet of good news will briefly poke its head through the murky cloud of hopelessness—only to be reclaimed moments later by news of the latest international tension, natural disaster or killing spree.

A news source that gives hope
Going through the day's top stories inevitably leaves me with a feeling of "the world is a terrible place and you can't do anything about it." It's not an activity I'm particularly gung ho about. There is, though, one news source I do enjoy hearing from. It's not FOX or CNN or NPR or BBC or anything like that—it's the Bible.

Sure, it's a couple thousand years old, but it still manages to report on the most late-breaking stories—so late-breaking that most of them haven't even happened yet.

I prefer these news stories because, unlike 90 percent of what you can read, hear or watch in your media of choice, they don't fill me with an overwhelming sense of depression. Quite the opposite, they give me hope:

Hope for a day when fighting will end, because people "shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore" (Isaiah 2:4).
Hope for a day when diseases like cancer will cease to tear men, women and children apart from the inside out because "God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
Hope for a day when at long last the heavens will shout, "The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever!" (Revelation 11:15).
Breathtaking glimpses
These are the news stories I look forward to hearing—the stories of a day when the reports we hear now exist only in memories as distant as a nearly forgotten dream. A day when things are finally as they should be. A future of which we are given the most breathtaking glimpses by the pages of the Bible.

There are few things in life more depressing than the news of today.

But there is nothing more encouraging than the news of tomorrow.

U.S. Policy: Abandon Israel to Appease Her Enemies?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/

U.S. Policy: Abandon Israel to Appease Her Enemies?
A commentary by Don Hooser
Good News magazine writer, Bellingham, Washington

Israel has been America's staunchest ally in the Middle East. The friendship has been strategically beneficial for America as well as for Israel.

And think of all the historic and cultural values that the United States has in common with Israel, including liberty, an independent judiciary, a free press, freedom of religion and women's equality. Many of both countries' moral values and civic principles stem from the Jewish Holy Scriptures, known to Christians as the Old Testament.

So why jeopardize a valuable friendship?

In the years since Israel became a sovereign nation in 1948, most nations have been prejudiced against her. Their knee-jerk reaction to every event has been to blame Israel and exonerate her enemies. One reason is the hard-to-explain but widespread infection of anti-Semitism. Another is the fact that Israel is small and has no oil. Why not choose "friends" who are rich and powerful so you can win favors plus escape violent retaliation?

However, over the years the United States has usually been a reliable friend to Israel. Why is this changing now?

President Obama's foreign policy patterns
During Barack Obama's first year as president, he visited more nations than any previous president, but he has not visited Israel. He has shown conspicuous coolness toward allies like Britain, Georgia and especially Israel, while being warm to the leaders of Russia and Russia's friends and the predominantly Muslim nations. And his apologies to other nations make it appear he is genuinely ashamed of America. The pattern seems one of appeasement as a means of peacemaking.

That brings us to March 2010, when Netanyahu was scolded by both Vice President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for allowing the approval of plans for 1,600 apartment units to be built in eastern Jerusalem. From the Israeli perspective, these are to be built in a Jewish neighborhood in the "undivided" capital city of a sovereign nation for its own citizens. But the Palestinians hope to make that area of Jerusalem part of their future capital.

Shortly after that, when Netanyahu arrived in Washington, he was treated like an intruder from a leper colony. His meetings with U.S. foreign policy officials were kept secret. And when the prime minister arrived for his visit with the president, he was brought to a side door of the White House. The president did not greet him at the door. No pictures, no joint press conference, no public statements, no diplomatic niceties were allowed.

During the meeting, Obama presented Netanyahu with 13 demands. When Netanyahu stalled, Obama stated that he was going to have dinner with his family and wheeled around and left the room. Some attendant had to escort the prime minister to the door. It's shocking that the U.S. president would treat a visiting leader with such intimidation and rudeness. Again, why?

Many believe the administration wants to weaken Netanyahu's political power in hopes that the government of Israel would then fall into line with Washington's agenda for the Middle East. Mr. Obama's 20-minute phone call May 3 might signal a slight warming in relations, but many are unconvinced.

Several U.S. administrations have naively pushed a "peace process" based on "land for peace." But radical Palestinian leaders have previously rejected such offers. They want land all right—all the land. But they don't want peace with Israel. They don't want Israel to even exist.

Also, a "two-state solution" may be impossible. Hamas in Gaza would probably never submit to Fatah in the West Bank. So a "three-state solution" might be more realistic.

Sadly, most U.S. administrations have pursued a path of appeasement, a "strategy" that has never worked. It's an example of man's prophesied failure to achieve world peace: "The way of peace they have not known" (Isaiah 59:8).

Some conclusions
So much suffering stems from ignorance of the Bible. Biblical understanding enables understanding of human nature and correct psychology, moral values, international relations, world history, cultures, economics and governmental principles.

Thankfully the problems caused by biblical ignorance will be solved after Jesus Christ returns to the earth! Then "the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea" (Isaiah 11:9).

Sadly, in the short-term, Jerusalem will be "surrounded by armies" and then "will be trampled by Gentiles [non-Israelites]" and subjugated for a few years (Luke 21:20, 24).

But here's the good news: Bible prophecy clearly shows that Israel will not be "wiped off the map." Christ's return will bring liberation, restoration, transformation and countless blessings to all nations!
