Good News! The Healing That Only God Can Bring!

A commentary by Randy D'Alessandro

Posted July 29, 2011

The world is full of sickness and disease - both physical and mental and emotional. Though many of mankind's greatest thinkers work daily to combat these illnesses, we are fighting a losing battle against death and disease. Jesus Christ and the healing authority of His Kingdom represent the only true cure for all sicknesses.

Source: Photos.comDo you remember the last time you visited somebody in the hospital? I do. As I walked the halls I observed the misery and suffering that each patient’s room seemed to house. Some were not seriously ill, but they were there nonetheless. The wished they could be somewhere, anywhere but there.

Others, however, were literally in a life and death struggle. The stakes could not be greater. In many cases the patients were surrounded by loving friends and family. In other cases the patients were facing the most critical moment of their lives with very few to be there for them other than the professionally-trained staff.

There are other types of hospitals designed to help those with other types of needs. Do you remember the last time you visited one of these facilities? I do. I remember wanting to cry as I witnessed people who were suffering, not due to physical challenges, but challenges of the emotions or the mind. Perhaps they were sensitive people deeply hurt by living in our very insensitive world. The world can be very cruel to such people—to the point where they need professional help just to get through the day.

Medicinal healing not enough

There is a need for another type of healing. However, you won’t be able to find any physical hospitals that would help those seeking this special healing. The healing I speak of here is the need for spiritual healing. With what we witness on a daily basis in global society there truly is a need for this type of healing. In truth, spiritual healing is foundational for each of the other types of healing.

Question: With our hospitals filled with state-of-the-art technology and highly trained professionals in their fields, is mankind truly receiving the care it really needs?

There is good news waiting for those with healing needs—and isn’t that really all of us? Don’t all of us need some type of healing at some level? The good news is that the hope for the healing of all of mankind does not rest in the hands of the men of science. As a matter of fact that hope does not reside in the hands of men whatsoever. The United Church of God proclaims to the world that real, lasting healing is coming—the kind of healing that only God can bring! Healing at every level of human existence! This healing will begin with the second coming of Jesus Christ. Several types of healing will take place.

Jesus Christ to heal the nations

There will be physical healing: “But to you who fear My name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings” (Malachi:4:2But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.). The word “sun” here means the sun that gives the earth its light and warmth. The metaphor is that of the healing powers the sun gives. In like manner, when Christ returns a significant part of His ministry is to aid in the total healing of mankind.

Jesus Christ will supply mental and emotional healing: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me, Because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed” (Luke:4:18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,). Here Christ is referring to His first coming, but also alluding to the work He will do at His second coming—the work of healing the brokenhearted and setting people free. Mankind has been held hostage by Satan, the god of this world. But the time is coming when mankind will be liberated physically, mentally and emotionally from the injuries inflicted by Satan. “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" (John:8:32And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.).

The end of sickness and disease

Last and most importantly, mankind will receive spiritual healing. Notice what God will do for mankind upon genuine repentance: “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm:103:12As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.). Our sins are to be forgiven, and we are to be spiritually healed as a result. Paul says that even our conscience will be cleansed and healed so that we can pursue a new life (Hebrews:9:14How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?).

The Case Against Evolution

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

The Case Against Evolution

"If you would like to dig more deeply into the case against evolution, we recommend the following books, many written by people with science backgrounds.

Many excellent books detail scientific findings and conclusions that compellingly demonstrate the impossibility of evolution as an explanation for the variety of life on earth. It's also helpful to remember that evolution cannot offer an explanation for the origin of our magnificent universe; evolution seeks to explain only how life proliferated in a universe that already existed.

If you would like to dig more deeply into the case against evolution, we recommend the following books, many written by people with science backgrounds:

• Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution

Michael Behe, Ph.D., associate professor of biochemistry, Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, 1996. Demonstrates that the minute building blocks of life—cells and their myriad components—are far too complex for their codependent parts and processes to have evolved without an outside, intelligent design at work.

• Dawkins' God: Genes, Memes, and the Meaning of Life

Alister McGrath, professor of historical theology, Oxford University, 2005. Professor McGrath, a former atheist himself who holds a Ph.D. in molecular biophysics, takes on the assumptions of popular evolutionary proponent Richard Dawkins and the atheistic worldview he promotes.

• The Twilight of Atheism: The Rise and Fall of Disbelief in the Modern World

Alister McGrath, 2004. Professor McGrath traces the history and rise of modern atheism, fueled in large part by Darwin's theory of evolution, and how it has influenced the world.

• What Darwin Didn't Know

Geoffrey Simmons, M.D., 2004. Dr. Simmons dissects the theory of evolution from the perspective of a medical doctor, giving compelling reasons why evolution cannot explain many aspects of the human body. As he notes in the introduction, if Darwin's Origin of Species were submitted to a scientific publisher today, it would likely be rejected due to the author's woefully incomplete understanding of cellular biochemistry, physiology, genetics and other branches of science that deal with the human body.

• Uncommon Dissent: Intellectuals Who Find Darwinism Unconvincing

Edited by William Dembski, 2004. Dembski, who holds Ph.D.s in mathematics and philosophy, brings together essays from intellectuals of various fields who not only explain the scientific weaknesses of Darwinism, but contend that the best scientific evidence actually argues against Darwinian evolution.

• Mere Creation: Science, Faith & Intelligent Design

Edited by William Dembski, 1998. A collection of academic writings from the fields of physics, astrophysics, biology, anthropology, mechanical engineering and mathematics that challenge Darwinism and offer evidence supporting intelligent design in the universe.

• Evolution: A Theory in Crisis

Michael Denton, M.D., Ph.D., senior research fellow, University of Otago, New Zealand, 1996. A molecular biologist, Denton examines features of the natural world that mutation and natural selection cannot explain and shows the impossibility of transitional forms required for Darwinian evolution to have taken place.

• Creation and Evolution: Rethinking the Evidence From Science and the Bible

Alan Hayward, Ph.D., 1985. Written by a British physicist, an insightful book on the pros and cons of the evolution-vs.-science controversy.

• The Neck of the Giraffe: Where Darwin Went Wrong

Francis Hitching, 1982. Points out many of the problems in the traditional view of evolution.

• Darwin on Trial

Phillip Johnson, professor of law, University of California, Berkeley, 1993. Shows that the weight of scientific evidence argues convincingly against the theory of evolution.

•Reason in the Balance: The Case Against Naturalism in Science, Law & Education

Phillip Johnson, 1995. Discusses the cultural implications of belief in evolution—that is, that the philosophy behind Darwinian evolution has become in effect the dominant established religion in many societies.

• Defeating Darwinism by Opening Minds

Phillip Johnson, 1997. Written specifically for older students and their parents and teachers to prepare them for the antireligion bias inherent in most advanced education.

• Objections Sustained: Subversive Essays on Evolution, Law & Culture

Phillip Johnson, 1998. Compilation of essays ranging from evolution and culture to law and religion.

• Bones of Contention: A Creationist Assessment of the Human Fossils

Marvin Lubenow, 1992. Documents the serious problems with the supposed links between man and apes.

• Shattering the Myths of Darwinism

Richard Milton, 1997. A science journalist and noncreationist, Milton reveals the circular reasoning Darwinists must rely on for their arguments while discussing data widely acknowledged in scientific circles.

• Tornado in a Junkyard: The Relentless Myth of Darwinism

James Perloff, 1999. A self-professed former atheist offers an easy-to-read view of evidence contradicting Darwinism, including many quotations from evolutionists and creationists. (The title is taken from a British astronomer's assessment that the likelihood of higher life-forms emerging through random mutation is comparable to saying a tornado sweeping through a junkyard could build a Boeing 747 airliner.)

• Not by Chance: Shattering the Modern Theory of Evolution

Lee Spetner, Ph.D., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1998. Demonstrates that a fundamental premise of neo-Darwinism—that random mutation created the kinds of variations that allowed macroevolution to take place—is fatally flawed and could never have happened as Darwinists claim.

• Icons of Evolution: Science or Myth?

Jonathan Wells, Ph.D., Yale University and University of California, Berkeley, 2000. A post-doctoral biologist documents that the most-used examples Darwinists call on to support evolution are fraudulent or misleading.

• The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design

Jonathan Wells, Ph.D., 2006. Dr. Wells shows that the best scientific evidence, far from supporting Darwinism, actually supports intelligent design.

Although the publishers of this booklet do not agree with every conclusion presented in these books, we think they present a persuasive and compelling case that the theory of evolution is fundamentally and fatally flawed.

Why the Bible is Different

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

Why the Bible is Different

Many writers authored the Bible and the perceptive reader gradually becomes aware of one great mind at work permeating its pages from Genesis to Revelation.

Throughout its long and difficult journey, the Bible has successfully withstood the many assaults leveled against it. Forbidden in the Middle Ages, bombarded with higher criticism during the 19th century and grossly neglected in the 20th, the Bible nonetheless continues to offer humankind sure hope and guidance.

As author David Ewert put it, "the Bible has resisted not only the ravages of time but also repeated attempts of the enemies of God to obliterate it" (From Ancient Tablets to Modern Translations, p. 16).

Although many writers authored the Bible, the perceptive reader gradually becomes aware of one great mind at work permeating its pages from Genesis to Revelation. No wonder the apostle Paul reminded early Christians that the Holy Scriptures are the "oracles of God" (Romans:3:2Much every way: chiefly, because that unto them were committed the oracles of God.). They are divine utterances.

When God revealed His will at Mount Sinai, He commanded Moses to codify and pass on this Word to the people (Deuteronomy:5:31But as for thee, stand thou here by me, and I will speak unto thee all the commandments, and the statutes, and the judgments, which thou shalt teach them, that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess it.; 6:1; 17:18; 31:24-26). Eventually the Scriptures were habitually read aloud in the temple at Jerusalem and elsewhere. Citizens could hear, understand and act accordingly. For instance, we find Jesus Christ had ready access to the Scriptures and read them aloud in the synagogue at Nazareth (Luke:4:16-22[16]And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.[17]And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,[18]The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,[19]To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.[20]And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.[21]And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.[22]And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph's son?). The audience there marveled at Christ's gracious words as He applied Isaiah's prophecy to Himself.

Later the apostles were inspired to write letters to the Church, often explaining the Holy Scriptures. With other writers and followers of Christ, they also penned the accounts of Christ's life and work that came to be commonly known as the Gospels. God saw to it that these unique writings were preserved for later generations (2 Peter:1:15Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance.).

Centuries later, after the invention of printing and translation of the Scriptures into popular languages, the common people increasingly gained access to the Holy Bible. Today this Book of books is accessible in almost all nations. Yet the secular thought patterns of our modern age often act as a powerful restraint on reading and understanding its pages.

The basic thinking of today's world often turns people away from the Bible. This is why magazines and study courses properly explaining and expounding God's Word are absolutely necessary. We need to read the Bible with godly understanding!

How does God communicate with His creation?

"It is he who fashions the mountains, who creates the wind, and declares his thoughts to mankind . . . His name is the Lord, the God of Hosts" (Amos:4:13For, lo, he that formeth the mountains, and createth the wind, and declareth unto man what is his thought, that maketh the morning darkness, and treadeth upon the high places of the earth, The LORD, The God of hosts, is his name., Revised English Bible).

By creating man in His own image, God ensured that communication would be possible. Then with God's help, human beings are able to understand and respond to His spiritual purposes.

When God wanted His people to return to Jerusalem from their Babylonian captivity, was He able to accomplish His purpose by transmitting an important message to an ancient king who could carry out this task?

"Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing . . ." (Ezra:1:1Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,).

God can communicate with anyone He chooses, even worldly kings and rulers like Cyrus. Solomon once commented, "The king's heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes" (Proverbs:21:1The king's heart is in the hand of the LORD, as the rivers of water: he turneth it whithersoever he will.; compare Ezra:6:22And kept the feast of unleavened bread seven days with joy: for the LORD had made them joyful, and turned the heart of the king of Assyria unto them, to strengthen their hands in the work of the house of God, the God of Israel.; 2 Chronicles:36:22-23[22]Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD spoken by the mouth of Jeremiah might be accomplished, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and put it also in writing, saying,[23]Thus saith Cyrus king of Persia, All the kingdoms of the earth hath the LORD God of heaven given me; and he hath charged me to build him an house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Who is there among you of all his people? The LORD his God be with him, and let him go up.).

How did God reveal the truth about His Son's divine identity?

"Jesus answered and said to [Peter], 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven" (Matthew:16:17And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.; compare verses 13-16).

Far more important than messages to unbelieving kings, God has revealed His precious truth to His apostles and prophets—who in turn preserved it for future generations (compare Amos:3:7Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealeth his secret unto his servants the prophets.; 2 Peter:3:2That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour:; Ephesians:2:19-20[19]Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;[20]And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone;). Today our understanding of God's Word is based on this same written revelation (2 Peter:1:19-20[19]We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:[20]Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.). Spiritual illumination of the Scriptures continues down to our present age (compare John:17:20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word;; Matthew:28:20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.).

What was one of the main ways that God disclosed His truth to the early Church?

"And they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers" (Acts:2:42And they continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.).

The term doctrine simply means "teaching." It relates directly to God's Word. The apostles' teaching summarizes the Christian way of life. Those early first-century congregations did not at first possess the books we now call the New Testament.

However, they did have specially chosen apostles who taught them from the Hebrew Bible as well as continually repeating the things they had learned firsthand from Jesus Christ (compare Luke:6:12-13[12]And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.[13]And when it was day, he called unto him his disciples: and of them he chose twelve, whom also he named apostles;; Matthew:28:18-20[18]And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.[19]Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:[20]Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.). Their authority came directly from Christ. "He who receives you receives Me," said Jesus (Matthew:10:40He that receiveth you receiveth me, and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.; John:13:20Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that receiveth whomsoever I send receiveth me; and he that receiveth me receiveth him that sent me.).

Christ's chosen apostles were given a unique role as first-generation witnesses—a function not assigned to any succeeding generation. Jesus told them, "And you also will bear witness, because you have been with Me from the beginning" (John:15:27And ye also shall bear witness, because ye have been with me from the beginning.). And the apostle John wrote: "This is the message which we have heard from Him [Jesus Christ] and declare to you . . ." (1 John:1:5This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.; compare Ephesians:3:4-5[4]Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)[5]Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;; Acts:1:22Beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that he was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of his resurrection.; 1 Corinthians:15:1-8[1]Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;[2]By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.[3]For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;[4]And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:[5]And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve:[6]After that, he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.[7]After that, he was seen of James; then of all the apostles.[8]And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time.).

Empowered by the Holy Spirit, the early apostles and their converts actually lived the New Testament before it was put into writing. Their lives composed the flesh, bone and sinew of what later would become the written New Testament.

Summing up the experiences of these apostolic witnesses, John wrote: "That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, concerning the Word of life—the life was manifested, and we have seen, and bear witness, and declare to you that eternal life which was with the Father and was manifested to us—that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ" (1 John:1:1-3[1]That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled, of the Word of life;[2](For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)[3]That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.).

What are God's intentions for man?

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope" (Jeremiah:29:11For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.).

God uttered these encouraging words to a nation in Babylonian captivity centuries ago, but they apply equally as well today. His Word offers a message of hope and a bright future, both for individuals and entire nations.

God's words apply today just as well as when they were first recorded long ago. Human nature is timeless. The men and women of old were of "like passions" (James:5:17Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.; Acts:14:15And saying, Sirs, why do ye these things? We also are men of like passions with you, and preach unto you that ye should turn from these vanities unto the living God, which made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all things that are therein:, KJV). They weren't some different breed of humanity. The things that happened to them were for our learning, encouragement, hope, comfort—and sometimes as a solemn warning (compare 1 Corinthians:10:11Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.; Romans:15:4For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.).

What does God guarantee about His Word?

"For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it" (Isaiah:55:10-11[10]For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:[11]So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.).

God does not speak His Word in vain. It will accomplish His great purpose on earth!

What does God require in order that He might share additional knowledge?

"Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know" (Jeremiah:33:3Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.).

We must first have a spiritual hunger for God's Word (Matthew:5:6Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.). Then, through reading and studying the Bible, we can discover basic truths about God and His revealed way of living. We can also see them amply demonstrated by real events in the lives of His chosen servants. These biblical teachings and examples illuminate His character and illustrate His will for us (compare Proverbs:3:1-6[1]My son, forget not my law; but let thine heart keep my commandments:[2]For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee.[3]Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:[4]So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.[5]Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.[6]In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.). We can trust God to direct our lives into right paths as we give Him our heartfelt obedience. Wrote author John Stott: "The Bible is the prism by which the light of Jesus Christ is broken into its many beautiful colors." Christ is the living Word of God!

During what time frame is the Word of God to be our guide?

"The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God stands forever" (Isaiah:40:8The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.).

The certain destiny of God's Word has been prophesied for thousands of years (compare Psalm:119:89For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven., 111, 142, 152, 160). Jesus Christ said: "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away" (Luke:21:33Heaven and earth shall pass away: but my words shall not pass away.).

Biblical Evidence Shows Jesus Wasn't Born on December 25

If Jesus Christ was not born on December 25, does the Bible indicate when He was born?

History convincingly shows that December 25 was popularized as the date for Christmas, not because Christ was born on that day, but because it was already popular in pagan religious celebrations as the birthday of the sun. But is it possible that December 25 could be the day of Christ's birth?

"Lacking any scriptural pointers to Jesus's birthday, early Christian teachers suggested dates all over the calendar. Clement … picked November 18. Hippolytus … figured Christ must have been born on a Wednesday … An anonymous document[,] believed to have been written in North Africa around A.D. 243, placed Jesus's birth on March 28" (Jeffery Sheler, "In Search of Christmas," U.S. News and World Report, Dec. 23, 1996, p. 58).

A careful analysis of Scripture, however, clearly indicates that December 25 is an unlikely date for Christ's birth. Here are two primary reasons:

First, we know that shepherds were in the fields watching their flocks at the time of Jesus' birth (Luke:2:7-8[7]And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.[8]And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.). Shepherds were not in the fields during December. According to Celebrations: The Complete Book of American Holidays, Luke's account "suggests that Jesus may have been born in summer or early fall. Since December is cold and rainy in Judea, it is likely the shepherds would have sought shelter for their flocks at night" (Robert Myers, 1972, p. 309).

Similarly, The Interpreter's One-Volume Commentary (1980) says this passage "would argue against the birth's occurring on Dec. 25 since the weather would not have permitted" shepherds watching over their flocks in the fields at night.

Second, Jesus' parents came to Bethlehem to register in a Roman census (Luke:2:1-4[1]And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed.[2](And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.)[3]And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city.[4]And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:)). Such censuses were not taken in winter, when temperatures often dropped below freezing and roads were in poor condition. Taking a census under such conditions would have been self-defeating.

Given the difficulties and the desire to bring pagans into Christianity, William Walsh says, "The important fact then which I have asked you to get clearly into your head is that the fixing of the date as December 25th was a compromise with paganism" (The Story of Santa Klaus, 1970, p. 62).

If Jesus Christ was not born on December 25, does the Bible indicate when He was born? The biblical accounts point to the fall of the year as the most likely time of Jesus' birth, based on the conception and birth of John the Baptist.

Since Elizabeth (John's mother) was in her sixth month of pregnancy when Jesus was conceived (Luke:1:24-36[24]And after those days his wife Elisabeth conceived, and hid herself five months, saying,[25]Thus hath the Lord dealt with me in the days wherein he looked on me, to take away my reproach among men.[26]And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth,[27]To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.[28]And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women.[29]And when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be.[30]And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God.[31]And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.[32]He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David:[33]And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.[34]Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?[35]And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.[36]And, behold, thy cousin Elisabeth, she hath also conceived a son in her old age: and this is the sixth month with her, who was called barren.), we can determine the approximate time of year Jesus was born if we know when John was born. John's father, Zacharias, was a priest serving in the Jerusalem temple during the course of Abijah (Luke:1:5There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.). Historical calculations indicate this course of service corresponded to June 13-19 in that year (E.W. Bullinger, The Companion Bible, 1974, Appendix 179, p. 200).

It was during this time of temple service that Zacharias learned that he and his wife, Elizabeth, would have a child (Luke:1:8-13[8]And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest's office before God in the order of his course,[9]According to the custom of the priest's office, his lot was to burn incense when he went into the temple of the Lord.[10]And the whole multitude of the people were praying without at the time of incense.[11]And there appeared unto him an angel of the Lord standing on the right side of the altar of incense.[12]And when Zacharias saw him, he was troubled, and fear fell upon him.[13]But the angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John.). After he completed his service and traveled home, Elizabeth conceived (verses 23-24). Assuming John's conception took place near the end of June, adding nine months brings us to the end of March as the most likely time for John's birth. Adding another six months (the difference in ages between John and Jesus) brings us to the end of September as the likely time of Jesus' birth.

Evolution and the German E. coli Breakout

A commentary by Randy Stiver

Biologists are struggling to understand the deadly E. coli breakout that killed dozens and sickened thousands in Germany. Many believe that we have a lesson to learn about evolution--but is it the right lesson?

E. coli bacteria under magnification

Source: Wikimedia CommonsThe other day I was reading a collection of funny and slightly cynical, enigmatic questions that somebody sent me:

•If you try to fail, and you succeed, which have you done?

•Can an atheist get insurance against acts of God?

•Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

•What was the best thing before sliced bread?

•Is there another word for synonym?

•If humans evolved from monkeys and apes—then why do we still have monkeys and apes?

Bingo! That last one is a really good question. I also read an analysis of the recent E. coli outbreak in Germany where an Ohio State University professor proposed a solution to such plagues.

Tainted vegetables

Attributed at various times to cucumbers, tomatoes and alfalfa sprouts contaminated with an antibiotic-resistant, mutated strain of the E. coli bacteria, the outbreak in May severely sickened at least 3,000 and killed some 35 people. It amounts to one of the worst such epidemics since the bacterium was first identified in 1982.

Many analyzed the circumstances and the genetics involved in the situation. However, Ohio State biology professor Steven Rissing pointed out that part of the phenomena was due to horizontal gene transfer from one bacterial strain to another. “We now know it is an ongoing force of evolution generating new strains of bacteria, including the toxic ones” (Columbus Dispatch, June 26, 2011, Section H3).

He continued with more details about the working knowledge of the genetics, but concluded with an intriguing question, “So where’s the hole in our understanding of biology? It’s the public understanding of the biology of such outbreaks” (ibid).

Public understanding of biology

Professor Rissing makes a good point about public ignorance of biology—but what is the nature of that ignorance and what is the solution to it?

He offered the basic premise of modern science that “biologists understand the genetic and evolutionary processes” (ibid). But do they really—or is there something in life on earth that science is missing?

He then stressed that the solution is to teach more science—specifically the evolutionary process, so that, as in the case of the E. coli outbreak in Germany—the population will understand “why bacteria at home in the guts of cows are just as comfortable in ours because of our descent from a common, warm-blooded ancestor” (ibid).

I agree whole-heartedly with the professor that science and the wonders of nature should be taught in more fully in the educational system. But the “ongoing force of evolution” and “common warm-blooded ancestor” emphasis raises another set of even more puzzling questions!

Questions and conundrums

Why focus on a common warm-blooded ancestor—why not focus on the common, original Maker? That would more aptly explain the remarkable nature of bacterial and other organisms’ amazing commonalities.

Why must science and education think only from the premise of evolution rather than from the far greater premise of deliberate creation? Why must science think so small when it could think so incredibly big?

Why does the scientific discipline of biology expound as its first “law,” the Law of Biogenesis, which is that “life begets life,” and then immediately break it by claiming that life originally came from non-life?

Where did those laws of physics, biology and other sciences come from? Modern science provides the expertise in using all these laws, but where did they come from and why do they always work? The “force of evolution” cannot create and sustain laws! The existence of law requires a lawgiver. Therefore, the laws of physics and nature require a Lawgiver.

How smart is man anyway?

Why are humans so smart and animals so, well, not? No offense to the anthromorphizers of the world, but just look at the facts. Beavers build dams, always have, but always just with sticks and mud—never a Hoover or High Aswan? Parrots and a few other birds can learn to speak words, but no parrot ever composed and delivered a Gettysburg Address. Chimpanzees, they say, have the reasoning power of a 2 or 3-year-old human, and early in the space race some chimps were launched into orbit by humans. All very nice indeed, but the chimps are still just chimps and will never launch a human into space.

Raptors, dogs, horses, pigs and even cats can sometimes be very smart, but only humans are intelligent (although unfortunately, not necessarily wise). There remains a great gulf between mankind and animal-kind—a gulf that cannot be explained by merely brain science. It’s a non-physical essence that the Bible calls the “spirit of man” (1 Corinthians:2:11For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God., King James Version).

Non-physical, i.e. spirit, does not fit the modern evolutionary worldview. Pity that, because if science actually began reasoning from the premise that God does exist, then perhaps it could solve even bigger problems than the recent, tragic E. coli outbreak in Germany.

In the News: Extraterrestrial Letdown

article by Amanda Stiver

New analysis from Harvard University lends support to the long-held conclusion of many that no extraterrestrial life exists in the universe.

Source: Shaun VenishA top astrophysicist explained that no other planet of the 500 or so analyzed has the stability in temperatures to allow life, as we know it on earth, to exist.

Other scientists, however, continue to search for the possibility of extraterrestrial life (Heidi Blake, "Alien Life Deemed Impossible by Analysis of 500 Planets," Telegraph.co.uk, Jan. 23, 2011).

What does the Bible say about aliens from other planets? God made the heavens and the earth, and that incredible process is described in the book of Genesis and referred to in other parts of the Bible. Nowhere does it say that God created another habitable planet at this time. However, God has promised "the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven … to all the peoples under the whole heaven as a heritage" (Deuteronomy:4:19And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.). You see, God made the earth and the human beings that inhabit it for a special purpose: to eventually inherit the whole universe as His eternal, divine family of spiritual children. That is our destiny! (See our free booklet What Is Your Destiny? to learn more.)

Moon Race Redux

Moon Race Redux

article by Cecil Maranville

Many nations are committing fortunes to reach the moon! You may be surprised to learn which countries are in the race—and even more surprised by what they seek. Scientists are calling it the perfect fuel, saying it will change the world as we know it.

King David marveled at the solar system he could see from earth. He wrote in Psalm 19:

"The heavens declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows His handiwork. Day unto day utters speech, and night unto night reveals knowledge. There is no speech nor language where their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world.

"In them He has set a tabernacle for the sun, which is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, and rejoices like a strong man to run its race. Its rising is from one end of heaven, and its circuit to the other end; and there is nothing hidden from its heat" (verses 1-6).

The sun has been "saying" something that the world didn't "hear" until 1985. And humankind is only now gearing up to do something about it.

The sun is beautiful, magnificent, awe-inspiring—and it is streaming a rare element into the moon's dust that may well change our world forever.

Fifty years have passed since the United States responded to the Russian Sputnik with a successful American satellite launch in early 1958. The race for space that followed is now a subject for history. Likely, the Tom Hanks movie Apollo 13 about the aborted lunar mission informs more people than textbooks do about this bygone era.

First moon race, a contest between ideologies

Why did America go to the moon? At the time, there was a fierce Cold War competition between the United States and Soviet Union over virtually every issue possible. The moon race was a proxy contest between capitalism and communism; the free world and the shadowy world behind the iron curtain.

On May 25, 1961, U.S. President John F. Kennedy spoke before a specially convened joint session of Congress to deliver what he called an extraordinary State of the Union speech.

Noting that this speech is traditionally given only once a year, President Kennedy asserted that the nation was in an extraordinary time, which called for dramatic action. Citing the Soviet achievement of its Sputnik launch four years before, he ignited the vision of America with these words:

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project in this period will be more impressive to mankind, or more important for the long-range exploration of space; and none will be so difficult or expensive to accomplish."

He framed America's motivation: "If we are to win the battle that is now going on around the world between freedom and tyranny, the dramatic achievements in space which occurred in recent weeks should have made clear to us all, as did the Sputnik in 1957, the impact of this adventure on the minds of men everywhere, who are attempting to make a determination of which road they should take."

Thus, the moon race was an economic and technological competition between the world's superpowers. The American president defined it as necessary to help humankind choose "freedom over tyranny," implying that the winner of the race would literally shape the political structure of the world.

America, of course, won, placing men on the moon as Kennedy proposed, before the decade was out on July 21, 1969. Yet, I know of no developing nations that subsequently chose democracy over communism because of America's victory.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) boasts of many now everyday technological advances that the space program made possible. "Every day, in a variety of ways, American lives are touched by space technology. Since 1976, over 1,500 documented NASA technologies have benefited U.S. industry, improved the quality of life, and created jobs. The Apollo program has helped change the way of life in America" (www.sti.nasa.gov/tto/).

Critics of the program argue that it's an incredibly expensive way to conduct research and development! These technological advances could have been discovered for a fraction of the hundreds of billions of dollars through which the U.S. space program has burned.

Why the United States is going again

So why is a new race to the moon underway? NASA is soon to dust off its Apollo series technology to return to the moon. In January 2004, President George W. Bush announced a renewed American commitment to space exploration, including returning to the moon.

Citing "a spirit of discovery" as motivation, he also pointed to technological spin-offs from past NASA work: "The exploration of space has led to advances in weather forecasting, in communications, in computing, search and rescue technology, robotics, and electronics.

"Our investment in space exploration helped to create our satellite telecommunications network and the Global Positioning System. Medical technologies that help prolong life—such as the imaging processing used in CAT scanners and MRI machines—trace their origins to technology engineered for the use in space."

Soviet communism aged, corroded and collapsed, outspent by the American capitalist juggernaut. The Soviet Union broke apart in the 1990s, but in recent years Russia has reemerged as a world economic power. It is diverting some of its newfound wealth into its space program. Russia, too, is returning to the moon.

Is history repeating itself? Is Russia out to settle an old score with the United States to see which power can outdo the other? No, this is a different world altogether from the Cold War era.

Illustrative of the change is the fact that China is a top-tier player. While unquestionably far behind American space technology, China has come incredibly far from 1957 when Chairman Mao complained in uncustomary frankness "that China was so underdeveloped that it couldn't even put a potato into space"! (Fred Guteri, "Race to the Moon," Newsweek, Oct. 11, 2007).

China actually already sent a probe to the moon in November 2007. It plans to land a rover there by 2012 and to conduct soil sampling by 2017. There are rumors of a possible manned landing by 2020.

It's a crowded field—and a rush for the "gold"

But there are still more nations headed to the moon. The names may surprise you: India (probe to launch in March this year; joint mission with Russia to put rover on moon by 2011; study mineral resources, 2012-2015; considering a manned mission to follow); Japan and Germany considering individual moon probes around 2010; South Korea (probe by 2015; orbiter by 2020).

Moreover, several of these nations are partnering with other nations, such as Brazil, France, Ukraine, Canada and, not surprisingly, the European Union.

Why? What's the big draw? Are all nations suddenly bitten by the discovery bug? Why would they duplicate what each other is doing? Within President Bush's 2004 speech lays a possible reason. Almost incidentally, he mentioned: "Also, the moon is home to abundant resources."

That's an understatement. There's a modern "gold rush" developing as nations pack their lunar mining tools. Only, it's not gold they're after, it's helium, specifically the isotope helium-3 (He3). It's all about meeting the energy needs of the earth.

This all stems from lunar soil sample #75501, collected by geologist astronaut Harrison Schmitt on Dec. 13, 1972, on the Apollo 17 mission. Thirteen years later, engineers at the University of Wisconsin discovered significant quantities of helium-3 in that sample. Helium-3 is relatively plentiful in lunar soil, in contrast to only small amounts on earth.

Lest I lose you at this point, I want to jump ahead to the potential commercial value of helium-3. Russian space geologist Erik Galimov summed it up by acknowledging that the nation that colonizes the moon will "put the rest of the world in its knees as hydrocarbons run out" (Izvestia, quoted by John Lasker, "Race to the Moon for Nuclear Fuel," wired.com, Dec. 15, 2006, emphasis added).

The unbelievable potential of helium-3

Consider these facts:

• Supporters call helium-3 the perfect fuel, with enormous commercial and national defense potential.

• Harrison Schmitt estimates that a single space shuttle load of helium-3 (approximately 25 tons) could supply the entire energy needs of the United States for a year.

• Scientists estimate the moon has about 1 million tons of helium-3, enough to power the world for 1,000 years!

• Just the Sea of Tranquility (site of Apollo 17's landing) holds enough helium-3 to power the world for hundreds of years.

• The nuclear reaction involved with turning helium-3 into electrical power is so clean a process that a helium-3 plant could theoretically be built in the middle of a big city.

• Helium-3 is worth approximately $40,000 per ounce.

• Compared with the energy from oil, helium-3's potential value is $4 billion a ton (Julie Wakefield, "Researchers and Space Enthusiasts See Helium-3 as the Perfect Fuel Source," SPACE.com, June 30, 2000).

A gift from God?

The source of helium-3 takes us back to Psalm 19's praise to the Creator for the awesome star He made for our solar system. The sun is constantly pumping out enormous quantities of helium, which solar winds carry toward earth. Only a small part of this is helium-3, and earth's magnetic field pushes it away.

But the moon does not repel the isotope. Consequently, God's creation has been bombarding the moon for perhaps billions of years with helium-3. Meteor strikes stir the helium-3 and drive it deep into the dust and rock of the lunar surface, where it waits for those who would mine it.

As exciting as this all sounds, it won't be easy. Even the supporters of developing power from helium-3 say that a viable process is still decades away. Detractors doubt that it's even possible. If all goes well, Harrison Schmitt admits it will take a million tons of lunar soil, heated to 1470 degrees Fahrenheit to liberate and harvest 70 tons of helium-3.

That's why the nations in the race are planning not just to reach the moon, but also to establish bases there from which mining operations could be handled.

And, as far off as success of this project might be, the world's wealthiest nations are literally pouring billions upon billions of dollars into the race to be among those to win the prize of helium-3.

If God allows this world to continue for decades, the nation or nations to reach and develop the moon's resources will dominate the world. But maybe God has provided this seemingly marvelous clean source of power for the world to come, the Kingdom that Christ will establish on this earth. WNP

Is it wrong to read the Harry Potter books?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

Is it wrong to read the Harry Potter books?

From what I've heard at camps and in my congregation, the ministers seem to think it's wrong, but none of them have read the books themselves. Please give me an answer from someone who has read them, if possible.

Answer:

Your question about whether it is wrong to read the Harry Potter books is one that many young Christians have faced. In these books the imaginary character Harry Potter attends Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he learns about possession and casting spells on people. Although this series of books is purely imaginary and the witchcraft in them is not technically the same as real-life witchcraft, filling our minds with things that closely resemble insults to God is not a good idea.

In working with ancient Israel, God consistently condemned witches, witchcraft and all things associated with the occult. In Exodus:22:18Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live., God said, "You shall not permit a sorceress [witch, KJV] to live." In Deuteronomy:18:9-12[9]When thou art come into the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not learn to do after the abominations of those nations.[10]There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch.[11]Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.[12]For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee., He adds, "'When you come into the land which the LORD your God is giving you, you shall not learn to follow the abominations of those nations. There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the LORD.'"

God hates these things because they represent people turning to Satan for their needs instead of to Him. It is a violation of the First Commandment in which God says, "You shall have no other gods before Me" (Deuteronomy:5:7Thou shalt have none other gods before me.).

In deciding whether to read these books, ask yourself, "Why would a Christian want to learn all about something he or she should never do and something that God hates?" There simply is no good explanation for reading books based upon witchcraft (technically correct or not) if one wants to honor and respect God.

While the answer to this question was prepared by ministers who have studied the Harry Potter books and read portions from them, actually reading bad books or sinning a particular sin is not mandatory before counsel against such practices can be given. When someone learns sufficient information to determine that a particular act is displeasing to God, he or she need not continue doing that thing in order to make sure it really is sin.

If you would like more information about the Harry Potter series, read the article, "The Bible and Harry Potter: Occult Fantasy in Perspective," in the January/February 2002 issue of the Good News magazine.

More Persecution of Christians than Ever Before

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

A commentary by Don Hooser

Persecution of Christians is rife and horrific in many parts of the world, and it's coming to the place where you live.

Source: Photos.com"Persecution? Really? Since I never hear about it, I thought it stopped a long time ago."

People who are living comfortably in a Western country that has laws to protect freedom of religion are often blissfully unaware of mounting persecution in the rest of the world. Virtually every religion suffers some persecution, but Christians are suffering the most. A recent study reported that 75 out of every 100 people that are killed for religious hatred are Christian. In 2010, Open Doors, a mission supporting persecuted Christians in more than 45 countries, estimated that 100 million Christians were being persecuted.

We need to be informed about this tragedy for several reasons.

In numerous countries, like Iran, Saudi Arabia and North Korea, intolerance and oppression of Christians is state policy. Many other state governments mostly ignore religious discrimination and violence against minorities, offering virtually no protection.

Ironically, the fall of a corrupt secular dictator, like President Mubarak of Egypt, is often bad news for Christians. Where Islam predominates, the overthrow of a secular dictator often allows the government to become controlled by Muslim extremists who are determined to establish Sharia law as the law of the nation. And Sharia forbids everyone from practicing any religion other than Islam!

Radical Islam isn't the only culprit—many Christians in India are suffering persecution from Hindu groups as well. Indian Christians are in a particularly bad spot because they are at risk from both radical Hindus and Muslims.

Persecution began with the founder of Christianity!

We shouldn't be surprised by ongoing persecution of Christians. It began immediately—with relentless slander and threats against the Perfect Man, Jesus Christ. Then His enemies managed to torture and kill Him in the most horrible way, by crucifixion.

Jesus warned His followers: "If the world hates you, realize that it hated me before it hated you…If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you" (John:15:18If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you., 20). He added, "Yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service" (John:16:2They shall put you out of the synagogues: yea, the time cometh, that whosoever killeth you will think that he doeth God service.).

In fact, there are many Bible prophecies of severe persecution of God's people in the end time.

Many forms of persecution

Persecution ranges from mild to severe. Keep in mind that when people can get away with minor forms of persecution, they often turn to more violent forms.

Even milder forms of persecution are obviously hurtful and scary: ridiculing, teasing, humiliating, ostracizing or speaking derogatorily or nastily of a Christian; schools not permitting students to write or speak about their Christian beliefs; employers discriminating against a Christian; and Christian political candidates putting up with scathing ridicule and slander.

These milder forms are increasingly prevalent in the United States, an indicator of much worse to come. We must make sure that each of us is prepared with strong faith and strong courage!

Should we be concerned for those who are suffering persecution in other nations?

It's easy to be apathetic about people in faraway places when we are extremely busy with our day-to-day activities. But there is no excuse for being selfish, self-centered and self-righteous. Jesus set the bar very high, commanding us to love everyone, even our enemies (Luke:6:27-38[27]But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you,[28]Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you.[29]And unto him that smiteth thee on the one cheek offer also the other; and him that taketh away thy cloke forbid not to take thy coat also.[30]Give to every man that asketh of thee; and of him that taketh away thy goods ask them not again.[31]And as ye would that men should do to you, do ye also to them likewise.[32]For if ye love them which love you, what thank have ye? for sinners also love those that love them.[33]And if ye do good to them which do good to you, what thank have ye? for sinners also do even the same.[34]And if ye lend to them of whom ye hope to receive, what thank have ye? for sinners also lend to sinners, to receive as much again.[35]But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.[36]Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.[37]Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:[38]Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.).

Many of these men and women are risking their lives to do what they consider to be God's work. Many end up being imprisoned, tortured and martyred for their beliefs. For all this, they deserve our deep respect.

We need to feel deep compassion and sympathy for these dedicated people—and pray for them.

Pastor Martin Neimoller, a survivor of Nazi concentration camps, said this: "First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me."

Let's be reminded of the Parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke:10:29-37[29]But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour?[30]And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead.[31]And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.[32]And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side.[33]But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him,[34]And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him.[35]And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.[36]Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?[37]And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.. The Samaritan, who had less scriptural knowledge, was the one who pleased God because he felt and showed compassion. Scriptural knowledge is wonderful, but if we want God to show us compassion when we are persecuted, we must feel and express compassion toward others who are being persecuted.

Let's remember these words of Jesus: "Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Matthew:5:7Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.).

World News and Trends: France no longer a Catholic country?

A recent poll printed in Le Monde Des Religions revealed that "the number of self-declared French Catholics had dropped from 80 percent in the early 1990s and 67 percent in 2000 to 51 percent today." In contrast, the number of declared atheists rose from 23 percent in 1994 to 31 percent today.

Henry Samuel, in Paris reporting for The Daily Telegraph, stated that "of the 51 per cent who still call themselves Catholics, only half said they believed in God. Many said they were Catholics because it was a family tradition" (Jan. 10, 2007, emphasis added throughout).

"In its institutions, but also in its mentalities, France is no longer a Catholic country," said Frederic Lenoir, Le Monde Des Religions editor in chief. According to what's prophesied in God's Word, religion will yet play a major part in European affairs. An alliance of a great religious power and a secular power will emerge in Europe and dominate the world. For further information, request our free booklet The Book of Revelation Unveiled. The Early Church Was Not Communist - and Neither Was Jesus

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

article by Don Hooser, Tom Robinson

A common misunderstanding is that the early Church practiced communal socialism, which some believe based on what they read in the beginning chapters of Acts.

Source: iStockphotoNote Acts:2:44-45[44]And all that believed were together, and had all things common;[45]And sold their possessions and goods, and parted them to all men, as every man had need.: "Now all who believed were together, and had all things in common, and sold their possessions and goods, and divided them among all, as anyone had need."

But this was a unique situation that didn't last very long. We later see that elderly widows were to be financially provided for by a common church fund only if they had no family members in the Church who could privately support them (1 Timothy:5:3-16[3]Honour widows that are widows indeed.[4]But if any widow have children or nephews, let them learn first to shew piety at home, and to requite their parents: for that is good and acceptable before God.[5]Now she that is a widow indeed, and desolate, trusteth in God, and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day.[6]But she that liveth in pleasure is dead while she liveth.[7]And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.[8]But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.[9]Let not a widow be taken into the number under threescore years old, having been the wife of one man.[10]Well reported of for good works; if she have brought up children, if she have lodged strangers, if she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, if she have diligently followed every good work.[11]But the younger widows refuse: for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ, they will marry;[12]Having damnation, because they have cast off their first faith.[13]And withal they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but tattlers also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.[14]I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.[15]For some are already turned aside after Satan.[16]If any man or woman that believeth have widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be charged; that it may relieve them that are widows indeed.). Obviously, all members of the Church's congregations at this later time were not being provided for out of a common fund—only a select number in real need.

In considering Acts 2, we should note that Christians were being persecuted. Also, thousands of new believers, some from distant lands, had just been added to the Church at the Feast of Pentecost in Jerusalem.

No doubt many decided to remain in Judea at that time to learn more about their new faith and rely on one another through growing persecution rather than return to their homes far away. These people thus had an immediate need for food and lodging, and a voluntary pooling of resources took care of that.

The believers at the time felt extremely blessed, grateful, hospitable and generous. Many who had extra assets sold some of them to help finance the living expenses of others. The expression "all things in common" means this: "I love you, and therefore your needs are just as important to me as my own needs. I consider all that I have as being yours also."

However, keep in mind that they could not sell what they did not own. They were voluntarily selling some of their privately owned property so they could help others. This was charity, not communism. No one was compelled to sell his property, nor did anyone confiscate one's property or income to give it to others, as many governments do today.

Acts:4:32-35[32]And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.[33]And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.[34]Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,[35]And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need., which follows shortly after in time order, shows that the pooling of resources was still going on. The account of Ananias and Sapphira in Acts:5:1-11[1]But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,[2]And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles' feet.[3]But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?[4]Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.[5]And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.[6]And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.[7]And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.[8]And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.[9]Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.[10]Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.[11]And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things. adds further clarity. God did not execute judgment on these two for their refusing to share, but for their telling a lie to make themselves look good.

The apostle Peter asked Ananias, "While it [their possession] remained [unsold], was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?" The couple was not obligated either to sell their land or to give away the proceeds. Again, this was not communism or socialism.

The words of Jesus Himself should make it even clearer. In His parables of the workers in the vineyard in Matthew 20, He portrayed God as a vineyard owner paying different employees the same agreed-on amount even if they worked for less time.

The employees who worked longer thought it unfair. But the owner, representing God, replies to one: "Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what is yours and go your way. I wish to give to this last man the same as to you. Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things?" (verses 13-15).

To the final question here, communists and socialists, and those with such leanings, would answer no—since in those systems the community or state decides. Jesus' statement, while figurative of spiritual principles, is nevertheless a ringing endorsement of both private ownership and free market exchange without wage control. He was certainly no communist—and neither were His followers.

Warnings for America

Warnings for America

article by Scott Ashley

"America must rediscover the qualities that originally made it great. That will not be easy."

Source: Photos.comTwo newspaper articles in particular caught my eye recently. The first, "U.S. Funding for Future Promises Lags by Trillions," appeared in USA Today (Dennis Cauchan, June 7, 2011). It covered a sobering phenomenon we've discussed previously in several articles—the skyrocketing amount of financial obligations created by the U.S. government with no realistic way to pay for them.

While the federal government took on $1.5 trillion last year to finance the budget deficit, it shockingly added 31⁄2 times that amount, "$5.3 trillion in new financial obligations in 2010, largely for retirement programs such as Medicare and Social Security," according to the article. The net effect? "That brings to a record $61.6 trillion the total of financial promises not paid for" (emphasis added throughout).

Numbers like these are so huge that people find them almost meaningless. To put it in perspective, if you spent $1 per second, 24 hours a day, you would spend $86,400 per day and more than $31.5 million per year. It would take you over 32,000 years to spend a trillion dollars!

Multiply that by 61 times, and you have some idea of that one part of America's debt problem. If you're an American, your share is $534,000 per U.S. household, "more than five times what Americans have borrowed for everything else—mortgages, car loans and other debt."

The other article, titled "Decline and Fall of the American Empire," was written by Larry Elliott, economics editor for the British news-paper The Guardian (June 6, 2011). It's a stern warning for a nation on a perilous path, and shocking coming from such a left-leaning paper:

"America clocked up a record last week. The latest drop in house prices meant that the cost of real estate has fallen by 33% since the peak —even bigger than the 31% slide seen when John Steinbeck was writing The Grapes of Wrath," the famous novel of Depression-era America.

Elliot points to America's 9.1 percent unemployment rate, to one in six Americans relying on government food stamps and to budget deficits that, percentage-wise, rival those of Greece, which is on the verge of financial implosion.

His sobering conclusion? "America in 2011 is Rome in 200AD or Britain on the eve of the first world war: an empire at the zenith of its power but with cracks beginning to show.

"The experience of both Rome and Britain suggests that it is hard to stop the rot once it has set in, so here are a few of the warning signs of trouble ahead: military overstretch, a widening gulf between rich and poor, a hollowed-out economy, citizens using debt to live beyond their means . . . The high levels of violent crime, epidemic of obesity, addiction to pornography and excessive use of energy may be telling us something: the US is in an advanced state of cultural decadence."

For years The Good News has warned about America's cultural, societal and spiritual decline. It's becoming so obvious now that even a secular economics editor writing for a highly liberal newspaper can recognize the connection between the nation's "cultural decadence," as he put it, and its downward economic spiral.

Elliott's article concludes with this: "Above all, America must rediscover the qualities that originally made it great. That will not be easy."

We couldn't agree more! In the following pages we'll examine some of those qualities that "originally made [America] great." We hope and pray that you personally, and all of our readers, will rediscover and apply those qualities!
