Coming: A Turning Point in Mankind's History

A commentary by John Ross Schroeder

News sources the world over continue to report troubling trends. There is only one solution to it all: the return of Jesus Christ to this earth! The biblical Feast of Trumpets represents this momentous occasion.

Source: Photo.comLondon's Sunday Telegraph editorial reaction to the Norwegian mass killing in late July becomes highly appropriate for describing a whole range of disturbing trends afflicting humankind around the globe. "It is a salutary reminder that anarchy and tragedy can erupt even in the least likely venues: The complacent dictum that 'it could never happen here' no longer applies anywhere. In our dangerous and uncertain world, there are no safe havens. Nor is the nature of the threats we face predictable or consistent" (July 24).

Continuing troubles and tragedies

And yet in spite of our increasing mega-troubles, hope often springs eternal in the breast of mankind. We are all aware of the looming prospect of possibly plunging back into a global recession, perhaps much worse than the one from which we just emerged. Even more disturbing in one sense is the worldwide decline of religious freedom. A recent report by Pew Research Center's Forum on Religious and Public Life has shown that this is really happening. "Nearly a third of the globe's population—2.2 billion people—live in countries where religious persecution increased between 2006 and 2009" (Thomas S. Kidd, USA Today, August 23).

The ultimate solution is coming!

Yet we somehow believe that things can still change for the better. And we're right! Over three decades ago, an American newsweekly magazine wrote about the world needing "A Strong Hand from Somewhere." This evokes a divine solution to our minds.

Indeed divine intervention remains our only real hope for deliverance from the box canyon that mankind has willingly entered, but without fully realizing how. Jesus Christ promised a solution from above which would occur before humanity destroyed itself from the face of the earth (see Matthew:24:21-22[21]For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.[22]And except those days should be shortened, there should no flesh be saved: but for the elect's sake those days shall be shortened.). Over 300 prophecies in the Bible promise Christ's return to planet earth to save us from ourselves. "Behold the Lord God shall come with a strong hand and His arm shall rule for Him. Behold His reward is with Him, and His work [of salvation] before Him" (Isaiah:40:10Behold, the Lord GOD will come with strong hand, and his arm shall rule for him: behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.).

One of God's annual Holy Days commemorates Christ's second coming to planet earth where He was before some 2,000 years ago. Many Christians celebrate this benchmark, world-shaking event by observing the little-known and even less-understood Day of Trumpets. Christ arrives on this earth at the seventh and last Trump. "Then the seventh angel sounded: And there were loud [angelic] voices in heaven, saying, 'The kingdoms of this world have become the kingdoms of our Lord and of His Christ, and He shall reign forever and ever" (Revelation:11:15).

The Feast of Trumpets: A Turning Point in History

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632.

The Feast of Trumpets depicts the return of Jesus Christ to earth to establish the Kingdom of God.

The Feast of Trumpets introduces the autumn festivals—representing the culmination of the present age of man and the beginning of an incredible time during which God will play a much more direct part in world events. The previous festivals constitute personal responses to the workings of God in the people He calls and chooses. But the Day of Trumpets heralds the intervention of God in the affairs of humanity on a global basis. This Holy Day represents a dramatic turning point in world history.

This particular festival also marks the beginning of the third and final feast season (Exodus:23:14Three times thou shalt keep a feast unto me in the year.; Deuteronomy:16:16Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty:), which includes the final four Holy Days of the year.

The return of Jesus Christ!

The Feast of Trumpets depicts nothing less than the return of Jesus Christ to the earth to establish the Kingdom of God! The book of Revelation reveals a sequence of earth-shaking events heralded by angels sounding a series of seven trumpet blasts. The seventh angel's sounding of the last trumpet signifies that "the kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ" (Revelation:11:15, NIV). The Bible foretells that at this time Jesus Christ will at last return to the earth. Of all the prophecies in the Bible, this one surely heralds the most exciting news possible for this weary, sin-filled world!

The Feast of Trumpets also marks the future fulfillment of the many Old Testament prophecies that speak of a Messiah coming as a king of the line of David who will sit on the throne of Israel and rule with power and authority over all nations. The concept of a conquering Messiah was on the minds of the apostles immediately after Jesus' resurrection. When He appeared to them in those early days, they asked Him, "Lord, will You at this time restore the kingdom to Israel?" (Acts:1:6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?).

Even in His earthly ministry, Jesus had spoken of distinctions between His first and second comings. When Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea, questioned Him just before the crucifixion, Jesus stated clearly that He had not come to rule at that time.

"My kingdom is not of this world," Jesus told the governor. "If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here." So Pilate asked Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered in the affirmative: "You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth" (John:18:36-37[36]Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.[37]Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.).

After Christ's resurrection, the apostles excitedly anticipated the fulfillment of Jesus' promises. They were aware of messianic prophecies such as Isaiah's that describe a time during which "the government will be upon His shoulder" and "of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end" (Isaiah:9:6-7[6]For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.[7]Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.).

In answer to the apostles' question as to whether He would soon establish the Kingdom, Jesus told them it was not for them to know the "times or seasons which the Father has put in His own authority" (Acts:1:7And he said unto them, It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father hath put in his own power.). Instead, Christ told them to focus on spreading the gospel—the good news—throughout the world. Later, in due time, the apostles realized that Christ's second coming was not necessarily imminent. Numerous scriptures describe the saints as eagerly looking forward to His return.

Why the symbolism of trumpets?

The excitement of this Holy Day, picturing these monumental events, is captured in the symbolism of this festival. Ancient Israel celebrated it with "a sacred assembly commemorated with trumpet blasts" (Leviticus:23:24Speak unto the children of Israel, saying, In the seventh month, in the first day of the month, shall ye have a sabbath, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, an holy convocation., NIV).

Actually, the word "trumpet" does not appear in this verse. The phrase "trumpet blasts" translates a single Hebrew word, teruah, which means a loud, resounding noise—a great shout or blaring, or an awakening blast. This was the sound of a "trumpet," but not the metal, musical kind also used by the Israelites. The God's Word Translation renders this phrase as "a holy assembly announced by the blowing of ram's horns." In that day a hollow animal horn, known as a shofar, was used to communicate important messages.

Such horns, blaring an alarm like a modern air-raid or tornado siren, were used to warn of impending danger, such as imminent war. As the prophet Jeremiah lamented: "O my soul, my soul! I am pained in my very heart! My heart makes a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because you have heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet [shofar], the alarm of war" (Jeremiah:4:19My bowels, my bowels! I am pained at my very heart; my heart maketh a noise in me; I cannot hold my peace, because thou hast heard, O my soul, the sound of the trumpet, the alarm of war.; compare Amos:3:6Shall a trumpet be blown in the city, and the people not be afraid? shall there be evil in a city, and the LORD hath not done it?).

This ties in with the fact that the events of the Day of the Lord that will usher in Christ's return will be cataclysmic, announced, as already mentioned, with angels blowing trumpets (Revelation 8-9; compare Zephaniah:1:14-16[14]The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.[15]That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of wasteness and desolation, a day of darkness and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,[16]A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.).

With their ability to transmit sound over great distances, trumpets were in ancient times excellent instruments for attracting people's attention. God even used the sound of a shofar to herald His meeting with Israel when He descended on Mount Sinai to speak the Ten Commandments (Exodus:19:16And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled.). Moreover, the shofar was used in coronation ceremonies (1 Kings:1:34And let Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet anoint him there king over Israel: and blow ye with the trumpet, and say, God save king Solomon., 39), and we've already seen that Christ assumes rule over the earth at the last trumpet. In connection with this Feast Day, Psalm:81:3Blow up the trumpet in the new moon, in the time appointed, on our solemn feast day. exhorts, "Blow the trumpet at the time of the New Moon . . . on our solemn feast day."

Amplification of the meaning of trumpets

The writers of the New Testament revealed additional understanding of the significance of the blowing of trumpets. Notice Paul's description of the return of Jesus Christ: "For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air" (1 Thessalonians:4:16-17[16]For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first:[17]Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.).

Paul also spoke of the day when the firstfruits pictured by Pentecost will be resurrected to immortal life. In 1 Corinthians:15:52In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. he says this will happen "in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed." Thus the awakening blast of this last trumpet will awaken the dead!

Although the Trumpets festival isn't mentioned by name in the New Testament, we have no valid reason for assuming that this Holy Day should not be observed today. On the contrary, the early Church used the Hebrew Scriptures as the foundation for doctrine (2 Timothy:3:16All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:). Like the Ten Commandments (James:2:10-11[10]For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.[11]For he that said, Do not commit adultery, said also, Do not kill. Now if thou commit no adultery, yet if thou kill, thou art become a transgressor of the law.), each of God's festivals is intimately and intricately related to the others. By keeping all of them, we can understand God's remarkable plan for humanity as it unfolds. We should not ignore some of His Holy Days while observing others.

Jesus' prophetic teaching

Near the end of Christ's earthly ministry, the apostles asked Him about the end of the present era. Notice Matthew:24:3And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?: "Now as He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to Him privately, saying, 'Tell us, when will these things be? And what will be the sign of Your coming, and of the end of the age?'"

Earlier, Daniel had prophesied about the establishment of the Kingdom of God and how the saints, or God's people, would inherit that Kingdom (Daniel:2:44And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.; 7:18). Like the disciples, however, Daniel did not understand when the Kingdom would come.

Jesus, in response to His disciples' questions, laid out for them a series of events that would lead up to His return. He mentioned to them religious deception, wars, famines, disease, earthquakes and other calamities (Matthew:24:4-13[4]And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you.[5]For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.[6]And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.[7]For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.[8]All these are the beginning of sorrows.[9]Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake.[10]And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another.[11]And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.[12]And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.[13]But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved.). He characterized the time of His return as an era of hatred and lawlessness. In this setting Jesus said, "This gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come" (verse 14).

More details in the book of Revelation

Later Jesus Christ revealed many more details about this pivotal time. The book of Revelation is described as "the Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him to show His servants—things which must shortly take place" (Revelation:1:1). Here Christ repeated through the apostle John the same events He had described to His disciples decades earlier. Now, however, Jesus used the symbolism of a series of seals He would open one by one (Revelation 6).

After this, at the beginning of God's anger against the disobedient nations, seven plagues will be poured out on a sinning world, with a trumpet blast announcing each, as we've seen (Revelation 8-9). Finally God will send two "witnesses," or "prophets," to proclaim His truth to a rebellious world (Revelation 11). Such prophetic witness is compared to a trumpet warning (Isaiah:58:1Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.). Tragically, the godless society of the last days will reject these two servants of God and kill them (verses 7-10).

These dramatic events set the stage for the seventh angel's trumpet sounding and Jesus Christ's return to begin the rule of His government over the entire earth (Revelation:11:15).

Of this same scenario, Matthew 24 says that "immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other" (verses 29-31).

Unprecedented events at Christ's return

Incredibly, when Jesus Christ returns to the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, the nations of the earth will gather to fight against Him (Zechariah:14:1-4[1]Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.[2]For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.[3]Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.[4]And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.). Revelation:19:19 describes this impending battle: "And I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against Him [Jesus Christ] who sat on the horse and against His army."

Why would anyone want to fight the Messiah? The armies will try to destroy Christ because Satan has deceived the whole world (Revelation:12:9). The devil's influence will inspire the nations to fight against Jesus when He returns.

Also at the time of Christ's return, His faithful followers will be resurrected to immortality. Revelation:20:5 describes this as the "first resurrection," which is also a "better resurrection" (Hebrews:11:35Women received their dead raised to life again: and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance; that they might obtain a better resurrection:). This change to immortal life was the hope of early Christians and remains the fervent hope of those who understand God's plan.

In the book of Romans, Paul depicts this resurrection as a glorious deliverance from bondage: "For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God . . . because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God . . . And not only they, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body" (Romans:8:19For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God., 21, 23).

We see that, even though tragic events lie ahead, the good news is that God will intervene to save humanity and guide mankind into His abundant way of life.

Jesus Christ will return to raise His followers from death and establish God's perfect rule over the earth. This is the wonderful, inspiring meaning of the Feast of Trumpets. Christ taught us to pray to the Father, "Thy kingdom come" (Matthew:6:10Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven., KJV). How urgently we need the answer to that prayer!

Pray for the Peace of Jerusalem

A commentary by Robin Webber

A proposal for the recognition of a Palestinian state is currently in the works in preparation for a United Nations vote. What does this mean for Israel? What does it mean for Palestine, the Middle East and the rest of the world?

Source: Photos.comIt has been quite a year for the Middle East, and September shows no slowing down as far as events that will impact our lives. Consider for a moment that the Arab world has been rocked with instability from the Atlantic Ocean to the Tigris River. In between those bodies of water the “Arab Spring” has knocked down former leaders like bowling pins in Tunisia, Libya, Egypt and Yemen. The remaining rulers of the area are holding on to their power by the skin of their teeth. The world order imposed by the great powers after the great world wars of the 20th century is collapsing.

In the middle of all this is the Jewish state of Israel, like an island in the middle of a swirling geopolitical typhoon. Picture a postage stamp size country like Israel being surrounded by the current unstable states of Jordan, Lebanon and Syria, whose political institutions are under serious assault. Just the other day a mob in Cairo tore the Israeli embassy to shreds as the ambassador hastened to safety. How would you like to live in this challenged neighborhood of nations?

Palestinian state: soon to be a reality?

Now in September comes news that the Palestinians, under Mahmoud Abbas, leader of the Palestinian Authority, is going to seek the “blessing” of the United Nations by taking their case for nationhood to the General Assembly of the UN. This is a procedural matter, because this organizational body cannot grant nationhood. Only the permanent members of the Security Council can make this decision. The United States will most likely veto the deal at that level. So what’s happening? This is another step in a long-term historical march to further isolate Israel from the world community.

The ever-present and recurring historical question once again pounds away—“Why don’t the Jews just cooperate? They are the irritating element in the global neighborhood! If only they wouldn’t be so different from everyone else!” Let’s not beat around the bush: Anti-Semitism is alive and well in the 21st century and has been since the days of Esther in Persia straight on through to Germany and to the present day. It’s just that every generation does it a little differently.

Israeland Jerusalem in prophecy

The Jews and their capital city of Jerusalem will continue to remain in the headlines. Did you realize that God predicted thousands of years ago exactly what is going on today? The prophet Zechariah proclaimed, “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it” (Zechariah:12:2-3[2]Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.[3]And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.). Yet Israel and its capital remain puzzling to humanity.

Jesus warned His disciples regarding the end of the age: “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near” (Luke:21:20And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.). By coupling the message of Zechariah and Christ together, let’s understand a fundamental principle about this scripture: Jerusalem is the bull’s eye of biblical prophecy! “X” marks the spot, and it hovers over the City of David. Today, Jerusalem has been proclaimed “the eternal and undivided capital of Israel.”

Peace yet to come for Israel and the Middle East

The good news is that God Almighty has a plan for the Jewish people and the city of Jerusalem. That doesn’t mean that there is not some rough sledding along the way. A solution is going to be imposed not only on this troubled region of the world, but the entire world, by Jesus Christ. The book of Zechariah tells us that He will start problem-solving right at the Mount of Olives when He returns to this earth and plants His feet in what is now Israel (Zechariah:14:4And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east, and the mount of Olives shall cleave in the midst thereof toward the east and toward the west, and there shall be a very great valley; and half of the mountain shall remove toward the north, and half of it toward the south.).

Until that day, let’s join David’s plea to, “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem” (Psalm:122:6Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.). As we pray for Israel and Jerusalem, let’s understand that God has a purpose and a plan for all people, including the Arab people. Through the prophet Isaiah, God shares the results of His divine “roadmap to peace” that Jesus Christ is going to bring about. The prophet says, “In that day there will be a highway from Egypt to Assyria [modern Iraq], and the Assyrian will come into Egypt and the Egyptians into Assyria, and the Egyptians will serve with the Assyrians. In that day Israel will be one of three with Egypt and Assyria—a blessing in the midst of the land, whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, ‘Blessed is Egypt My people, and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel My inheritance’ (Isaiah:19:23-25[23]In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians.[24]In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land:[25]Whom the LORD of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.).

Until that day, pray for the peace of Jerusalem!

The Grim Dilemma of Government Leadership

The Grim Dilemma of Government Leadership

article by John Ross Schroeder

The present financial crisis has handed members of the world press a field day. Most current affairs journalists are having a go at both America and Europe—decrying the lack of political leadership. Why are we in this monetary mess, and what does God require of our leaders?

Wrote Fareed Zakaria in Time magazine recently: “Americans need a government that works. What the debt crisis highlighted is that Congress—the heart of today’s government—is utterly and completely broken” (“The Debt Deal’s Failure,” Aug. 15, 2011, p. 15). Alternatively, some observers blame U.S. President Barack Obama. The title of The Economist’sLexington column labels him “an underperforming president”—the article’s drophead stating that he “allowed the Republicans to rout him over the debt ceiling” (Aug. 6, 2011).

ASunday Telegraph article by Peter Oborne broadened out this grim picture to include European leaders, the drophead summarizing, “Washington and Europe seem powerless in the face of the economic tempest” (“In a Crisis Like This, the World’s Leaders Are Out of Their Depth,” Aug. 7, 2011). Oborne further warns, “Wake up: the eurozone is very close to collapse.”

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown blamed the euro-crisis on both German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy (“Brown: I Blame Merkel and Sarkozy for Financial Crisis,” The Independent on Sunday, Aug. 7, 2011).

Clearly, there are myriads of magazine and newspaper articles that assign blame or report on others assigning blame and telling readers what needs to be done to restore order. Trouble is, the various observers are all over the political spectrum, as is the advice the proffer.

One British observer came closer to defining the cause of America’s financial ills. “The country is in the middle of a moral crisis,” wrote Christopher Caldwell in The Spectator (“Divided We Stand,” Aug. 6, 2011). This observation implies that we may be falling foul of absolute standards and values not of human making. It even suggests that God may be involved. That, in fact, is the proper perspective.

Divine judgment at work?

God is certainly involved in the leadership of nations. And Scripture reveals that our lack of adept leadership today may be the result of His judgment. The prophetic Word explains in Isaiah 3: “For behold, the Lord, the Lord of hosts, takes away from Jerusalem and from Judah . . . the mighty man and the man of war, the judge and the prophet, and the diviner and the elder; the captain of fifty and the honorable man, the counselor and the skillful artisan, and the expert enchanter” (verses 1-3).

Clearly, the various functions of skill and leadership are expressed in the terminology of that day. Competent leadership across a whole range of national fields and endeavors was to surely disappear from ancient Judah. And the same applies to our societies today. Remember that Bible prophecy is dual in nature. Prophetic fulfillments can occur more than once—the later and greater fulfillment often coming in these latter days. Our free booklet You Can Understand Bible Prophecy explains this basic principle of proper scriptural studies.

But in the nation of Judah, who wound up taking the place of professionally competent leaders? God said: “I will give children to be their princes [rulers], and babes [people sorely lacking in maturity] shall rule over them. [As a result] The people will be oppressed, every one by another and every one by his neighbor” (verses 4-5). Poor leadership adversely affects the general populace of a nation. The common people often suffer immensely when governments go wrong: “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules, the people groan” (Proverbs:29:2When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice: but when the wicked beareth rule, the people mourn.).

In ancient Judah, the ruling classes either reached the point of lacking sufficient maturity to make proper decisions or lacked the courage to implement what needed to be done in spite of popular outcries. It’s the same today.

The moral causes

But why would God cause financial adversity to happen to a nation? Isaiah 3 goes on to say: “For Jerusalem stumbled and Judah is fallen, because their tongue [what they say] and their doings are against the Lord, to provoke the eyes of His glory . . . And they declare their sin as Sodom [shamelessly]; they do not hide it. [Is it not the same in Western society today?] Woe to their soul! For they have brought evil upon themselves” (Isaiah:3:8-9[8]For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen: because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.[9]The shew of their countenance doth witness against them; and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not. Woe unto their soul! for they have rewarded evil unto themselves., emphasis added throughout).

Ultimately nations and individuals reap the results of their own actions. God made a moral universe in which evil brings its own tragic consequences. God’s laws are self-enforcing. This is one way our Creator points us back to right paths. Jeremiah:2:19Thine own wickedness shall correct thee, and thy backslidings shall reprove thee: know therefore and see that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou hast forsaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, saith the Lord GOD of hosts. explains, “Your own wickedness will correct you, and your backslidings will rebuke you.”

Returning to Isaiah 3, we note that God strongly rebuked the wrongs of ancient leadership: “As for my people, children are their oppressors and women rule over them. O My people! Those who lead you cause you to err, and destroy the ways of your paths” (verse 12). Again, these principles apply to our own day as well.

Essentials of proper leadership

The Bible identifies the type of leadership that pleases God Almighty: “But on this one will I look: On him who is poor [humble] and of a contrite [repentant] spirit, and who trembles at My word” (Isaiah:66:2For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.). Our Creator desires rulers who have a healthy respect for His Word and the spiritual laws it reveals.

Moses’ father-in-law rightly instructed him on whom to appoint to lead others: “Moreover you shall select from all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness, and place them over them” (Exodus:18:21Moreover thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of truth, hating covetousness; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens:). Leaders should be competent as well as men of truth who fear and respect their Creator.

King David plainly relayed the words of his Creator: “The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spoke to me: ‘He who rules over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God’” (2 Samuel:23:3The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God.). David himself made some mistakes and on one occasion sinned very seriously. Yet according to the apostle Paul, the witness of God stands firm: “He raised up for them David as king to whom He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David, the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will’” (Acts:13:22And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king; to whom also he gave their testimony, and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfil all my will.).

David became the standard bearer for the kings of Judah and Israel who came after him. Why? “Because David did what was right in the eyes of the Lord and had not turned aside from anything that He commanded him all the days of his life, except in the matter of Uriah the Hittite” (1 Kings:15:5Because David did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and turned not aside from any thing that he commanded him all the days of his life, save only in the matter of Uriah the Hittite.). This constitutes an overall divine judgment of David’s life.

A few kings of Judah followed his righteous ways, but most did not. Tragically, all the kings of the northern nation of Israel imitated a bad example, that of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who introduced false elements into national worship.

What God requires of leaders

Anciently God sought through the Book of the Law to strongly encourage Israel’s rulers to follow His way of life. One way was to require, as Deuteronomy:17:18And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book out of that which is before the priests the Levites: states, that the reigning king write a copy of God’s laws for himself. The next verses explain: “And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutes. That his heart may not be lifted up above his brethren, that he may not turn aside from the commandment to the right hand or to the left, and that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children in the midst of Israel” (verses 19-20). In principle, the Old Testament reinforces the importance of daily Bible reading today.

Sadly, we’re a long way from that today. Ignorance of the Bible has reached unbelievable proportions in the 21st century. In Britain leading intellectuals who appear on popular radio programs that test their general knowledge do very well—until they are asked to name the four Gospels.

The testimony of God’s Word remains clear. “There is no truth or mercy or knowledge of God in the land. By swearing and lying, killing and stealing and committing adultery, they break all restraint, with bloodshed upon bloodshed” (Hosea:4:1-2[1]Hear the word of the LORD, ye children of Israel: for the LORD hath a controversy with the inhabitants of the land, because there is no truth, nor mercy, nor knowledge of God in the land.[2]By swearing, and lying, and killing, and stealing, and committing adultery, they break out, and blood toucheth blood.). Is this not basically true of our Western nations today?

When it comes to serious issues, our national leaders truly are out of their depth. More and more, it appears that this is the result of the curses our nations are accruing to themselves as they continue to ignore God or defy Him outright (see Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28). Why can’t we get it right when it comes to the economy and other pressing matters? Because we refuse to get it truly right in matters of right and wrong. That is the real bottom line.

Thankfully, a day is coming when the right kind of leaders will govern not just the Western nations, but the entire planet. When Jesus Christ returns to reign, all will learn the right way to live. Blessings will mount up instead of curses. And all people everywhere will thrive.

But be warned: Things will get far worse before they get better when that new day dawns. So stay close to God. Our free booklet, Transforming Your Life: The Process of Conversion can help you in building a relationship with your Creator.

Even if our national leaders don’t turn to Him now, you will be blessed personally if you genuinely commit your life to Him and His ways. And you will be preparing to be the kind of leader God requires for the new society He will soon set up.

Laying Up Treasure

article by Frank Dunkle

With no signs of the economy improving anytime soon, gold prices are soaring—and many are looking to precious metals to save them from ruin. How do we prepare for financial disaster?

You’ve no doubt heard the commercials. Gold may reach a price of $2,000 an ounce. Companies that deal in precious metals are urging anyone who will listen to buy now. Dollars are in danger of rapidly losing their value—and so are pounds, euros, yen and just about any other money you might think of.

Conservative politicians have a similar message: profligate government policies are damaging economies and seriously devaluing currencies. Their solution, ahead of your making financial investments, is that you give them your vote.

What should we do? Does the Bible give us any insight into how to prepare for financial disaster?

Out-of-control debt and currency manipulation

Before answering, let’s consider whether or not the situation is as dire as some say. As of August 3, 2011, the public debt of the United States stood at $14.34 trillion, far more than ever before (with $9.78 trillion held by the public and $4.56 trillion in accounts held by the government itself). Public debt in America is hardly new. The U.S. government was in debt from the start, having borrowed millions to finance its War of Independence. Since then, the federal budget often ran deficits, with occasional surpluses. During the presidency of Andrew Jackson the debt was completely eliminated for a time, but wars and disasters have always increased the size of the public debt.

During the Civil War the public debt passed $1 billion and topped $3 billion by the war’s end. World War I pushed that number past $25 billion, though it shrank significantly in the following decade. The Great Depression and World War II grew the debt from $16 billion in 1930 to $260 billion in 1950. Matching the rate of inflation, the public debt grew to more than $900 billion in 1980, and government spending dramatically increased thereafter. It passed $3.5 trillion in 1992, rose to nearly $6 trillion by 2000, jumped to nearly $11 trillion in 2008, and continued its dramatic climb to a current level above $14 trillion.

What do these numbers mean? Billions and trillions are numbers beyond the comprehension of most of us. One way to think of it is that the size of the U.S. debt is nearly that of the country’s Gross Domestic Product (the total value of goods and services produced in the nation in a year)—that is, 96 percent of a GDP of $15.003 trillion at the end of June 2011 (debt held by the public standing at 65 percent of GDP). And this doesn’t take into account government obligations to social programs such as Social Security and Medicare. Adding those commitments would bring U.S. public obligations to approximately $62 trillion.

This is hardly a problem for America alone. Within the eurozone, Greece, Ireland and Portugal have needed bailouts from partner countries to prevent national insolvency. Spain and Italy face similar problems, and efforts to relieve the crisis have had limited effect. But what does this have to do with buying gold?

To put it briefly, several governments owe more money than they can reasonably expect to repay. This has become painfully obvious in Greece, and some say the United States is quickly putting itself in the same situation. Tax increases are unpopular with voters, especially since they simply give government more money to spend. Spending cuts are unpopular with the masses of people who benefit from government programs—consider the protests and riots in Europe over proposed austerity measures.

Another way a national government can relieve its debt burden is to artificially increase the money supply. This inflates the currency, making each unit worth less in purchasing power. Yet while the value of the money falls, preexisting debts remain payable in the same number of currency units, as established by contract. Thus, the U.S. government can repay loans with dollars worth considerably less than when borrowed. This is why people holding home mortgages, student loans and other long term debt don’t mind a little inflation. However, homeowners and students do not have any control over inflation, as a national government does.

When a government deliberately inflates its currency, through programs like “quantitative easing,” it is really enacting a tax of sorts on everyone who holds money in that currency. That is why some investors have purchased large amounts of gold or other durable assets. It makes sense to store wealth in a form that cannot be arbitrarily manipulated. But is gold really as safe as some people say?

That depends on what level of safety we’re talking about—and the viability of the global economic system itself.

No financial protection against societal collapse

There is an old joke that says: If you owe your bank $500 and you can’t pay, you’re in trouble—but if you owe your bank $500 million and you can’t pay, your bank is in trouble! This may be funny as a joke, but how does it work when the one who can’t pay is a national government and when the creditor is not just a bank but a mixture of investors: companies, individuals and other countries? If you as an individual default on a major loan, you may be taken to court, have assets seized and conceivably be jailed. But what’s the outcome for sovereign nations?

When a nation defaults on its obligations, the result is often revolution or war. The entire social structure may disintegrate. Institutions crumble. In the 1920s the economy of the Weimar Republic of Germany failed, hyperinflation set in, and soon the Nazi regime took power. Given the current state of things, the protests and demonstrations occurring in Greece and Spain may end up being among the least harmful results of the sovereign debt crises. Could revolution or war overturn government and society in Europe and the United States? Could such a catastrophe lead to nuclear conflict and mass destruction? If so, will it be better to have gold and silver than dollars or euros?

Longtime readers of this publication know that Bible prophecy foretells cataclysm at the end of this age before God Himself intervenes to establish a new, better government. While many details of coming societal collapse are not explained, Scripture does provide some surprisingly specific ones. One of these can be found in Ezekiel:7:19They shall cast their silver in the streets, and their gold shall be removed: their silver and their gold shall not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the LORD: they shall not satisfy their souls, neither fill their bowels: because it is the stumblingblock of their iniquity., which says, “They will throw their silver into the streets, and their gold will be like refuse; their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them in the day of the wrath of the Lord.” Evidently there will be nothing to buy—or at least no functioning marketplace for the multitudes in this predicament.

This reminds me of a historical account of the conquest of the Incas by Francisco Pizzaro in the 1500s. When the Spaniards continued asking the natives about their gold and silver, the Incas asked why they wanted it so badly. “Do you eat it?” they asked. “Does it make you immortal?” One might ask similar questions of modern investors. If the economy and/or society collapses, can a person eat gold any more than he can eat bills of exchange?

Of course, the answer is no. But gold could be traded for food or other necessities when paper money loses value while society still functions. I do not seek to discourage anyone from investing in gold or similar assets, merely to put investing and money management into perspective.

The ultimate investment advice

There is much wisdom in finding investments that will serve as a hedge against inflation—along with other prudent planning for economic crises. “A prudent person foresees danger and takes precautions. The simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences” (Proverbs:22:3A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.; 27:12, New Living Translation). Being prepared will also put you in a position to help others.

But there are times when even the most valuable and durable of commodities become worthless. Those times include the end of the world—whenever that may be—but also the end of your life. Although you hope the latter is still a long way off, it’s impossible to know for sure. The Bible provides the ultimate investment advice that is good for either event.

It is simply this. Jesus Christ said, “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth [including gold] where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal” (Matthew:6:19-20[19]Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:[20]But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:). Of course, there is no stock market or exchange where you can buy treasure in heaven. Obviously, Jesus meant that we should build the treasure of righteous character and of a relationship with God. Such things cannot be purchased; they must be developed through a way of living.

The Bible teaches that way of living, and you can read and understand it. Download or request our free booklets How to Understand the Bible and Making Life Work for some guidance on how to lay up that treasure in heaven. And for some basic financial guidance, be sure to read our booklet Managing Your Finances.

In the meantime, what about your investments? Is the end of the world near? Some say it is—but it has seemed that way before, and things improved. It is certainly not a sin to buy gold or invest for the future. What you need to ask yourself is: What are you preparing for? Is it a downturn in the economy or the complete breakdown of society? Gold might be useful for the former but utterly useless for the latter. Treasure in heaven will always be a good investment.

Are You Worried About the Economy?

A commentary by Michael Snyder

Personal and national fears, anxiety and anger skyrocketed over the past few weeks as American politicians fell to verbal blows.

The National Debt Clock in New York City as seen on August 8, 2011. This digital billboard displays the increasing US debt.

Source: Jesse KuczynskiWhat's the source of this conflict? Whether to extend U.S. debt limits, cut spending and raise taxes. A Congressional compromise was barely reached in time, but many still fear that we're slipping back into global recession. The numbers of joblessness and debt are so large that they disorient our senses. How does this make you feel? Is the tottering economy keeping you up at night? Millions are having their share of sleepless times, but you don't need to join them.

Experts agree that the past decade of mind-numbing bust and boom, greed and fiscal gluttony has left consumers and investors alike with all-time record low levels of trust. Until trust levels rise and confidence begins to return, the threat of a double-dip recession remains. Given this, what are we supposed to do? Perhaps surprisingly, we all have our roles—even you right now can play a surprisingly positive part.

What can you do? Turn to God

For thousands of years, the answer to this question has lain before us. Even though the numbers are all-but-unimaginable, large-scale crisis of political and financial origin are scarcely new. Humans from every walk of life have faced deep crises before, and they will face them again.

Any crisis or challenge—even ones as global as we see today—generally includes some element of consequence. Many challenges or crises are largely self-inflicted. Clearly much of the global crisis that engulfed the planet over the past few years was the direct result of unchecked greed. Too many people tried to get rich at the expense of others, and the system failed.

The Bible, which chronicles human behavior according to the standards of a living God, shows time and time again that God allows trials to befall us to get our attention. If viewed properly, trials teach us wisdom and fashion within us precious godly character. They teach us to seek God, depend on Him for strength and answers, change to match His ways, and to be grateful for the many blessings that we receive. When we do this, we don't have to worry about the economy, whether local or global.

The apostle Paul—a man of God who had his own share of trials and challenges—urges us to turn our lives completely over to God, to offer ourselves totally and humbly as "living sacrifices" (Romans:12:1I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service., New International Version). In doing so, we can find out what God's divine will is for this planet and for ourselves (verse 2).

And once we find out what God's will is for us, if we change and align ourselves with that powerful and loving will, we have nothing to fear. The Bible teaches and experience confirms that people who are yielded fully to God's will and have set themselves in motion to do it—these people experience a level of emotional and mental serenity that defies description. This active and living commitment produces a literal peace that passes understanding (Philippians 4:7).

Trust in God is the antidote for worry

For those worried about the economy, worried about their jobs or worried about what they may wear or eat, Jesus offered specific advice. As He told his followers—which includes us today—"Do not worry about your life" (Luke:12:22And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on.). He magnified this by reminding us of our limited power: "Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing, why do you worry about the rest?" (verses 25-26, emphasis added). Adding an hour of our individual lives is a big thing for humans. In fact, it's impossible! But for an all-powerful God, it's a "very little thing."

The point? If we're aligned with God's will and seeking to do it, God will take care of us. Concerning the physical things of this life, Jesus tells us that God the Father "knows that you need them" (verse 30). If our priorities are straight, then we have nothing to fear. As Jesus concluded in this passage: "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well" (verse 31).

Are you still worried about the economy? Lots of people are. But if we are seeking the means to be of service, of learning of and then furthering God's will, we have unbreakable spiritual promises to rely on. You don't have to worry about the economy. As Paul instructs us today, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6, NIV).

If we do this properly, even in the midst of global financial uncertainty and turmoil, we have this mighty promise: "My God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). So stop worrying and start yielding to a God who loves you and cares for you!

Is believing in your horoscope okay?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/  or call 1-888-886-8632.

Is belief in the signs of the zodiac wrong?

Is believing in your horoscope okay?

Answer:

Although some firmly believe that the success of their day, the good fortune of their decisions and even their lives depend on advice they get from the signs of the zodiac, this is not what God says. God nowhere in the Bible tells us to build our lives around moon phases and the signs of the zodiac as astrologers teach. God even said that He will burn up unrepentant astrologers (Isaiah:47:13-14[13]Thou art wearied in the multitude of thy counsels. Let now the astrologers, the stargazers, the monthly prognosticators, stand up, and save thee from these things that shall come upon thee.[14]Behold, they shall be as stubble; the fire shall burn them; they shall not deliver themselves from the power of the flame: there shall not be a coal to warm at, nor fire to sit before it.).

Jeremiah:10:2-3[2]Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them.[3]For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. tells us very clearly: "Thus saith the Lord, learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain . . ." (King James Version).

Astrology, moreover, is a form of idolatry because it puts man's devices before God's ways. Astrologers teach people to try to obtain success by means of astrology. But God expressly forbids this worship of the constellations and the host of heaven (2 Kings:23:5And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to burn incense in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that burned incense unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the planets, and to all the host of heaven.).

Just before the nation of Israel entered the Promised Land, God, through Moses, reminded the people about the importance of obeying the laws that He had given them.

Notice the word of caution recorded in Deuteronomy:4:19And lest thou lift up thine eyes unto heaven, and when thou seest the sun, and the moon, and the stars, even all the host of heaven, shouldest be driven to worship them, and serve them, which the LORD thy God hath divided unto all nations under the whole heaven.: "And take heed, lest you lift your eyes to heaven, and when you see the sun, the moon, and the stars, all the host of heaven, you feel driven to worship them and serve them, which the Lord your God has given to all the people under the whole heaven as a heritage."

The sun, moon and stars were not to be served in any way. The signs of the zodiac are not something to put stock in or to believe as determiners of our daily lives or destinies.
