We have certainly seen devastating earthquakes in recent years. The December 2004 earthquake off Indonesia was the most powerful in decades, unleashing a massive tsunami that took some 300,000 lives—the greatest number of casualties from an earthquake in more than 500 years.
But this word translated “earthquakes” in Matthew 24:7 Matthew 24:7For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
American King James Version×
deserves a closer look. The Greek word is seismos, from which we derive such English words as “seismic” and “seismology,” referring to earthquake activity and the study of earthquakes. Strong's Lexicon defines it as “a commotion, i.e. (of the air) a gale, (of the ground) an earthquake—earthquake, tempest” (Strong's No. 4578).
Seismos encompasses a broader meaning than just the earth shaking. Matthew 8, for example, records the famous story of how a violent storm overtook Jesus and His disciples on the Sea of Galilee, threatening to capsize their fishing boat and drown them—until Jesus miraculously calmed the winds and waves.
The word used in verse 8 for this sudden, powerful storm is seismos, here translated “great tempest.” The parallel account in Mark 4:37 Mark 4:37And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full.
American King James Version×
calls it a “great windstorm.” Therefore, seismos can also refer to violent storms involving wind and water, and isn't limited strictly to earthquakes as we might assume.
When Jesus Christ foretold “famines, pestilences and earthquakes in various places,” His words encompass natural disasters that include earthquakes, but also can apply to hurricanes, typhoons, tornadoes and other such violent storms in the air.
As the world recently saw with Katrina's devastation of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast, hurricanes can be enormously destructive. Katrina took more than 1,000 lives and caused an estimated $200 billion in damage. In 1998, rainfall from hurricane Mitch generated more than a million landslides in Honduras alone, wiping our roads and burying towns and farmland.
Are such natural disasters increasing as Jesus foretold?
The Sept. 16 issue of Science magazine reports on research by scientists at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado. They concluded that while the number of hurricanes and cyclones had not increased, “the researchers did find a sharp increase during the past 35 years in the number of category 4 and 5 tropical cyclones, the most intense storms that cause most of the damage on landfall” (Richard Kerr, “Is Katrina a Harbinger of Still More Powerful Hurricanes?”, p. 1807).
Specifically, they found that the frequency of the most dangerous and damaging storms—those rated category 4 and 5— increased by 80 percent from the 1970s to the last decade. Their conclusions mirrored findings by a Massachusetts Institute of Technology meteorologist reported in the Aug. 4 issue of Nature.
Such findings should certainly make us sit up and take notice. Later in that same prophecy of the end time, as recorded in Luke 21:25-28 Luke 21:25-28 25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and on the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draws near.
American King James Version×
(New International Version), Jesus says: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea.” This appears to be not just a reference to massive storms, but also to more devastating tsunamis like the Indian Ocean tsunami from last December.
Here we also find Jesus using an interesting Greek word. Salos, translated “tossing,” means “the tossing motion of large waves on a body of water—'surging waves'” ( Louw-Nida Lexicon ). A Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament defines its meaning as “a rolling or tossing motion, surge, esp. of the waves in a rough sea . . .” Both of these definitions mention surging of waves. The huge storm surges produced by hurricanes are perhaps their most damaging aspect.
Jesus continues: “Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Can you hear the time bomb ticking in the Middle East? If you flinch under the weight of the escalating price and humiliating dependence on foreign oil, if you hear the threats from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad against Israel and the West and if you hear Ahmadinejad's defiant rejection of the West's oft-repeated demands for Iran to cease and desist from enriching uranium, then you do indeed hear the Iranian bomb ticking in the Middle East. Could it go off in the not-too-distant future?
Israelis cannot just wait for the bomb to go off; they live next door. Will Israel attack Iran and if so, when? Recently, Israel conducted an obvious military exercise over the Mediterranean Sea near Greece. The idea of this military exercise was to show that Israel's planes would fly the distance necessary to mount a mission to knock out Iran's nuclear facilities. Israel's implied threat is simple and direct: If enrichment continues, we could strike!

Israeli military exercises over the Mediterranean

Putnam Media Managing Editor Rick Pedraza wrote an insightful article for Newsmax.com titled “Bolton: Israel Will Strike Iran if Obama Is Elected.” It addressed a recent Fox News interview of former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton. Pedraza commented on Israel's massive air force exercise over Greece, which the Greek, Israeli and U.S. forces later confirmed was a test run for a strike on Iran's main uranium enrichment plant.
The ordinary person may not have considered Israel's determined, strategic and geopolitical defense against Iran's covert and overt threats of nuclear warfare. Bolton has: “'I think if they are to do anything, the most likely period is after our elections and before the inauguration of the next President.' They'd have to make a judgment whether to [strike] during the remainder of President Bush's term in office or wait for his successor” (www.newsmax.com ).
Remarkably, and counterintuitive to what might be considered a public norm, “Bolton believes Arab countries will support an Israeli strike, effectively ending Iran's nuclear ambitions, while publicly denouncing it”(ibid., emphasis added).
Former Ambassador Bolton thinks that if Senator John McCain wins the presidential race, the Israelis might postpone the attack, offering, “McCain's stance on Iran 'is far more realistic than that of the Bush administration'” (ibid.). Mr. Bolton thinks that Iran would not respond immediately to a strike since they would fear an American reprisal.

Israel, a very tiny nation

With all the saber rattling, Israel has little recourse but to take a very strong military stand, no matter the threat. This small nation is surrounded by overwhelming numbers of Arab states. Israel occupies a pitiful pinch of real estate blanketed by its Arab neighbors, many within its own borders. Every inch of Israel's territory is seen as critical to its safety.
It's easy to discover why Israel is in such a precarious and highly dangerous geopolitical position, a tempting prize for its larger neighbors. Israel, with an area of about 8,000 square miles, is ½0th the size of California. Israel is 260 miles long with a 120-mile coastline and is 70 miles across at its widest point. Israel is surrounded by more than 20 Arab nations equal to more than 630 times its size, more than 50 times its population—and the surrounding nations currently hold all the oil.

U.S. presidential influence in the mix

With only a few months until the American presidential elections, Israel should and likely will give the Bush administration one more chance to stop Iran's rush to enter the atomic and nuclear age. If nothing concrete happens before January 2009, it's possible that Israel will wait no more.
Will or can the United States do more than offer veiled threats to Iran, considering the U.S. involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan? The surge is working in Iraq, but Iraqi police alone aren't yet able to keep the peace. Taliban fighters are attempting to regain a foothold in Afghanistan. There is speculation that the United States may transfer troops from Iraq to Afghanistan to quell the Taliban surge.
The perplexing entanglement in the Middle East brings to mind Winston Churchill's 1939 radio broadcast in which he referred to forecasting the reaction of Russia to German aggression: “It is a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma [i.e., a puzzle, difficult to solve]; but perhaps there is a key. That key is Russian national interest.”
Perhaps the key to the Iranian threat, counterintuitively, might just be the Arab nations' fear of Iranian hegemony right next door. Though they are overwhelmingly Muslim, the majority of Iranians are ethnically Persians rather than Arabs. The Iranians are also predominately Shiite Muslims (like the majority in Iraq), which makes the Sunni Muslims who control the rest of the Middle East's oil quite nervous.
If there's a military strike on Iran, either from Israel or the West, oil could spike to over $200 a barrel, further alienating the West from unsympathetic oil cartels. Gasoline could rise to $6 a gallon if not more.
It is clear that any U.S. intrusion into Iranian affairs would provoke a strong reaction from surrounding Arab countries, at least verbally. But would they do more? Consider that Iran's neighbors would not like Iran to have the bomb. Privately they would like a leveling of the playing field. An Iran with nuclear weapons would be a threat to the Arab nations, as well as to Israel. So don't assume that threatening rhetoric from nearby Arabic nations means that they are in league with Iran on this hot topic.
The U.S. presidential race is being weighed in the balance by both Iran and Israel. Both Iran and Israel will play out their hands based on how tough they think the next U.S. president will be on Middle Eastern geopolitics.

Will Israel survive?

Will Israel strike at Iranian nuclear facilities? If they conclude they need to, they probably will. It's a matter of self-preservation. With the recent announcement that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert will step down after September elections, that seems more likely. Olmert has generally been viewed as a weak and ineffective leader, particularly in military matters.
What will be the outcome of all this? It won't be what most people would expect. Ironically, the Bible shows the Middle East and Israel being invaded by a European-based power described by Daniel as the king of the North (Daniel 11:40-41 Daniel 11:40-41 40 And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over. 41 He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his hand, even Edom, and Moab, and the chief of the children of Ammon.
American King James Version×
). Zechariah describes a terrible attack on Jerusalem, with half the city going into captivity (Zechariah 14:1-3 Zechariah 14:1-3 1 Behold, the day of the LORD comes, and your spoil shall be divided in the middle of you. 2 For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city. 3 Then shall the LORD go forth, and fight against those nations, as when he fought in the day of battle.
American King James Version×
).
But after all this, the inhabitants of the Middle East—Jews, Arabs and Iranians alike—will not be thinking about bombs but plowshares (Isaiah 2:4 Isaiah 2:4And he shall judge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more.
American King James Version×
)!

BEIJING: (Reuters)-China announced July 15 it had the technology to make neutron bombs, but gave no details. “China officially announced here today that it has already mastered the neutron bomb design technology,” the official Xinhua news agency said in a one-paragraph report.
The announcement came amid a dispute with rival Taiwan, which abandoned its “one China” policy that has helped underpin East Asian security for decades.
The three-line Xinhua report gave no clue as to when the neutron bomb was developed or whether China had conducted tests, begun mass production or deployed the weapon.

Free money—AWESOME!
But can we actually get something for nothing? There's always a catch or a consequence lurking around the corner ready to dash the thrill.
Such is currently the case with America's economic stimulus package. It entails giving $168 billion worth of tax rebate checks, from $300 to $1,200, to citizens in hopes that the money will be spent on products to encourage growth in the economy to avoid a recession. Those checks are now in the mail.
However, “Economists are debating how effective the rebates will be, with critics arguing that debt-burdened consumers will use the money to pay bills rather than spending the checks and spurring growth” (foxnews.com ). Hmm, that sounds like responsible spending to me.
Whether these checks will be helpful for the economy or not, time will tell. But there is one major catch to this “free” money. The government doesn't have the extra cash to give away.
To fund the stimulus package the United States will borrow the money from various foreign lenders like China. Thus it will go further in debt to create a short-term solution and once again push aside that whole deficit thing. The U.S. budget deficit for 2008 is projected to nearly double that of last year (newsmax.com ).
The real kicker with the stimulus package is that even if Americans spend their checks, a huge percentage of consumer products available to buy are actually made in China. That sounds awfully stimulating, but for the Chinese more than the American economy!
The irony is that overspending and out-of-control debt at serious levels helped get the American economy into this problem in the first place.
So what can we do?
We can critically analyze the political and economic problems that exist wherever we live and make sure that we don't let societal trends and national mistakes happen in our personal lives.
To be successful personally and nationally, we need divine guidance .
God gave us a guidebook for success and happiness—the Bible . As our Creator, He knows what we need. He shows how we should live in order to be prosperous and happy. Even if governments and society around us continue to reject God, we can still ask for His help to learn His ways and enjoy the benefits!
God and your success
God wants you and me to succeed, to value what He values. His formula: “Do not turn from it [His law] to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go… Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:7-9 Joshua 1:7-9 7 Only be you strong and very courageous, that you may observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded you: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may prosper wherever you go. 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth; but you shall meditate therein day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. 9 Have not I commanded you? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be you dismayed: for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.
American King James Version×
).
Be brave and think vertically. Learn to apply biblical principles in your life. When it comes to stimulating your own personal economy, avoid debt and make wise choices. Also, read this fascinating free booklet Managing Your Finances .
Whether or not the United States will avoid a recession (or worse) in the short term remains to be seen, but all of us in the younger generations will bear the long-term consequences of national debt and current overspending.
Wouldn't it be better to be indebted only to God and know that true success comes from His loving and perfect guidance? VT

Crime in America tends to run in families. Nearly half of inmates in state prisons have family members who either are or have been incarcerated.
Three brothers in Louisiana are all convicted murderers serving life sentences in the state prison system. Among the many prisoners awaiting capital punishment in California are six sets of brothers. Texas has already executed six sets of siblings, and two sets of cousins are on death row.
In addition to female partner Bonnie Parker, the 1930s notorious robber and murderer Clyde Barrow also had a brother who occasionally joined him in robbing banks. Brothers Jesse and Frank James made a career of crime in the late 1800s.
Clearly family members influence one another for better or for worse. According to USA Today,“The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says an estimated 2 million children with one or both parents incarcerated face the greatest risk of perpetuating the cycle of crime across generations” (Jan. 29, 2008).
Breaking the cycle of family crime is a supremely difficult, but necessary, national challenge, and one that must start in the home. You can learn many foundational principles in our free booklets Making Life Work and Marriage and Family: The Missing Dimension . (Source: USA Today. )

The opening article in this two-part series (“Useless Body Parts? “) began an analysis of so-called “useless” body parts that have been labeled as vestigial or leftover from the process of evolutionary development.
The particular body parts addressed were taken from a brief Discovery News listing that appeared on the Fox News website (“9 Useless Body Parts ,” Oct. 14, 2011).
We'll here consider at a few more items from the same list. May this concluding article bring you further enlightenment about how useful these body parts actually are.

Body hair

Evolutionists maintain that early humans were hairier when they supposedly first branched off from other primates. It's argued that our ancestors lost the hair over time, not needing as much to keep warm as they learned other ways to keep warm and as their bodies developed better temperature regulation. Thus, our body hair today is taken to be a useless leftover. But let's look at some of the medical understanding about our body hair.
Body hair provides a variety of functions. The hair on our heads protects us from excessive sunlight and UV radiation as well as wind damage. Hair in our armpits, genitals and legs reduces friction. Hair also aids in the sweating process. As we sweat the hair pulls the sweat away from our bodies. That helps the sweat to evaporate more easily and keeps it from sticking to the skin and causing chafing or blistering. Body hair can also redirect sweat to protect more sensitive areas, like our eyebrows keeping sweat out of our eyes.
Body hair also aids in our sense of touch. Have you ever felt a bug crawling on the hair of your head? We don't often think about it, but a lot of what we feel on our skin is because of sensations transmitted through hairs (www.dailymail.co.uk ).
As for the body hair humans supposedly used to be covered with, scientists are guessing at this—making an assumption based on their belief that we descended from hairier primates. The fact is, the amount of hair we have perfectly suits our needs.

Erector pili

The ability of our hair to stand up comes from the erector pili (also spelled arrector pili ), a muscle attached to several hair follicles. Evolutionists say we needed this ability when we were hairier to look bigger and scarier. Now, they say, it isn't much good except for giving us goose bumps.
Yet the erector pili serve many functions. Pressure exerted by the erector pili help the sebaceous gland to secrete sebum (a natural skin lubricant), which helps maintain the integrity of the skin as a barrier (this is also why excessive skin washing is not good because it removes this sebum that helps to moisturize and protect our skin). Sebaceous secretions work with apocrine glands to help regulate body temperature. In hot conditions the secretions emulsify and foment formation of and prevent the loss of sweat drops from the skin. In colder conditions sebum repels rain from skin and hair. This muscle tightening also helps to retain body heat, while the loosening of these muscles can help to cool the skin.
While we can indeed get “goose bumps,” the previous section elaborated on the many other functions our body hair provides. Additionally, God gave us a wide range of emotions that can be expressed in many different ways—being frightened can cause our hair to stand up, but being cold can make our hair stand up too. God gave our bodies the ability to give us feedback on our environment and to give physical expression to our mental or emotional state.

Wisdom teeth

According to accepted evolutionary theory, humans used to have bigger jaws with 32 teeth. They say that what we call wisdom teeth were needed to chew a rougher diet. As humans evolved, the jaws became smaller to match the softer diet, and the wisdom teeth were no longer needed. In fact, they're even a problem in the smaller mouth. Some evolutionists speculate that the extra teeth were needed to replace other molars that fell out.
The major problem with viewing the molars this way is that evolutionists can't give any good reasons for an advantage that a smaller jaw would give humans. Some modern studies have shown that jaw and tooth development and alignment have a lot to do with how strong the jaw muscles are. Foods that require more chewing (not modern processed foods) have a big determination in how the molars develop and align (M.J. Barrett, “Dental Observations on Australian Aborigines: Tooth Eruption Sequence,” Australian Dental Journal, Vol. 2, p. 227).
What's more, this evolutionary perspective would have more weight if every case of irrupting wisdom teeth required removal, but studies have shown that most of the cases involving removal of wisdom teeth were done preventatively. About 80 percent of wisdom tooth removal was done whether there was a dental problem or not (A.J. MacGregor, The Impacted Lower Wisdom Tooth, 1985, p. 3).
The bottom line is that wisdom teeth should be treated as any other tooth—useful in chewing the food we eat, or treated appropriately if they fail to function properly.

Appendix

Sitting at the junction of the small intestine and large intestine, the appendix is a thin tube about four inches long and normally in the lower right abdomen. As might be expected, evolutionists claim that the appendix was useful for digestion during our early plant-eating years, but is now useless since we started eating more easily digestible foods. Modern medical science is now admitting this is not the case.
Doctors have discovered that the appendix is very important in the immune system of fetuses and young adults. Loren Martin, professor of physiology at Oklahoma State University, wrote in Scientific American :
“The appendix serves an important role in the fetus and in young adults. Endocrine cells appear in the appendix of the human fetus at around the 11th week of development. These endocrine cells of the fetal appendix have been shown to produce various biogenic amines and peptide hormones, compounds that assist with various biological control … mechanisms.
“During the early years of development … the appendix has been shown to function as a lymphoid organ, assisting with the maturation of B lymphocytes (one variety of white blood cell) and in the production of the class of antibodies known as immunoglobulin A (IgA) antibodies. Researchers have also shown that the appendix is involved in the production of molecules that help to direct the movement of lymphocytes to various other locations in the body” (“What Is the Function of the Human Appendix? Did It Once Have a Purpose That Has Since Been Lost?,” Oct. 21, 1999).
Some medical doctors believe that the appendix acts as a storehouse for good bacteria, “rebooting” the digestive system after diarrheal illnesses (Digestive Disorders Heath Center, “Appendix “).

Evolution's useless arguments

These two articles can't begin to detail all the arguments regarding parts of the human body that are considered vestigial, unnecessary or of “unknown use.” The remarkable point is that medical science eventually finds that these parts do have purposes.
But one great failing of evolutionary thinking is to not recognize that God has also designed our bodies to adapt to survive. Can we survive without an appendix, or wisdom teeth or any other “minor” part of our body? Of course we can. Humanly, we can adapt to a loss of an appendage, sight or hearing and still have a productive life. Adaptability is not evidence of evolution—it is evidence of good design.
The more research and study that's done in the natural world around us and in understanding our bodies, the more obvious it becomes that evolution fails to account for the complexity and resiliency of life—life that God created. Medical science doesn't fully understand every aspect of these lesser parts of our bodies. However, as more studies refute the idea that these parts are unnecessary, it is evolution's arguments that are found to be useless.
For more insight into the shortcomings of the theory of evolution, we recommend that you read our Bible study aid, “Creation or Evolution: Does It Really Matter What You Believe?

North Korea recently attacked South Korea with an artillery barrage that nearly destroyed an island and killed at least four Koreans. The South might retaliate and bring about a larger scale conflict.
An all-out war on the Korean peninsula would be very costly, and a surprise attack on South Korea is possible at any time. The North reportedly has 500 artillery guns aimed at Seoul, the capital of the South. This metropolitan area has over 22 million people, which is about the same size as New York. Casualties could run into the millions quickly.

Mexican drug murders and a bailout for Ireland

Closer to home for Americans, the Mexican newspaper Reforma reported that drug cartel-related murders along the border exceeded 10,000 so far this year. This is almost twice the number of military fatalities in Iraq and Afghanistan combined, and we still have several weeks to go.
The bloodletting and murder of Mexican youth, political office holders and policemen is rampant in border towns such as Ciudad Juarez, which borders El Paso, Texas. The tally includes over 800 killings after torture and more than 300 decapitations. The violence is spreading into the United States every day, and the root cause is the ever-increasing market for illicit drugs in the United States.
Ireland was on the edge of bankruptcy just days ago, but was bailed out at the last minute with huge loans that come with a high price. Why does it make sense to loan people who cannot pay their current loans more money, and then pronounce the problem “solved”?
Portugal, Greece, Spain and Italy are also unable to pay their debts. As a result, the Telegraph newspaper reported that much larger bailouts are coming. “Spain's former leader Felipe Gonzalez warned that unless the European Central Bank steps into the market with mass bond purchases, the EMU system will lurch from one emergency to the next until it blows up” (Dec. 2, 2010). One has to wonder, where will all this money come from?

WikiLeaks embarrassments

As if these stories are not concerning enough, the news is full of the contents of 250,000 secret U.S. State Department communications that have been posted on WikiLeaks. Some of those messages reveal systemic corruption in Afghanistan, likely sales of 19 BM-25 long-range missiles to Iran by North Korea, covert military operations in several locations around the globe, and spying on foreign leaders and slanderous comments that are embarrassing for the U.S. government.

Cash for climate change?

While the above and much more was going on, representatives from more than 190 nations, the United Nations and the European Union were attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference at a resort in Cancun, Mexico. Most of the talk reportedly centered around money and how the G20 developed nations might be coerced into sending enormous amounts to the underdeveloped countries. What these nations have done to deserve the money is not explained.

A world gone crazy?

Is the world going crazy? Problems everywhere appear to be getting worse and seem to have no solution. Why is the world unable to deal with problems at virtually every level?
There is a very real spirit world that influences mankind more than we know. God's Word speaks specifically about “the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience” (Ephesians 2:2 Ephesians 2:2Wherein in time past you walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience:
American King James Version×
). The prophet Isaiah tells us that this same being is one “who weakened the nations!” (Isaiah 14:12 Isaiah 14:12How are you fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how are you cut down to the ground, which did weaken the nations!
American King James Version×

VIENNA-At least two million women from Eastern Europe have been sold as “white slaves” in the West in recent years, according to unofficial estimates by Interpol.
The practice, figures on which were released at a conference on slavery in the Bulgarian city of Varna, shows no sign of abating, with organized crime increasingly dealing in the sale of Eastern European women-often lured with promises of lucrative jobs and modeling contracts-to supply the sex trade in the West. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has warned that young female Kosovo refugees have been forced into the prostitution racket in refugee camps, and have been sent to work as prostitutes in European Union countries ( South China Morning Post, 1999, Sonya Yee).

In Vulgarians at the Gate (2001), author Steve Allen shared with his readers the sadistic brutality of some rap lyrics. For example, the Geto Boys wrote the song “Mind of a Lunatic.” The rapper's lyrics speak of a woman who was abducted by the rapper, dragged back into her house and raped at knifepoint. Though she begged for her life, the rapper killed her and molested her corpse.
Mr. Allen then discusses the philosophical argument as to whether this cultural fare is acceptable or whether it's dangerous and destructive. Obviously Mr. Allen—himself the author of thousands of song lyrics and the score for several musicals—was very much opposed to it.
Under the assumption that no children would be reading his book, he felt “it is important to include at least a few all-too-typical examples of the genre so that there can be no doubt as to what is at issue. Today's purposely offensive material is much closer to men's room graffiti than to the art practiced by America's best song-poets” (pp. 250-251).
Then Allen shares the filthy, obscene and lewd lyrics of 2 Live Crew from the 1991 CD As Nasty as They Wanna Be. The cesspool lyrics, unprintable in The Good News , detail illicit sex and a complete lack of respect for human life. Regrettably, such obscene, violent, misogynist lyrics are all too common in what passes for music today.
Movie critic Michael Medved offers samples of similarly disgusting and degrading messages on pages 97-105 of his landmark 1992 book Holly-wood vs. America: Popular Culture and the War on Traditional Values.
Parents who care about their children will screen their media diet and will teach their children by word and example a much healthier way to think and live. GN

“While listless, oil-soaked pelicans may be the most memorable images of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the fishermen and business owners marooned along the Gulf Coast already are proving just as big a challenge for the mental health workers dispatched from Louisiana to Florida to help vaccinate against the fast-growing epidemic of despair,” reported The Los Angeles Times (Kim Murphy, “Oil Spill Stress Starts to Weigh on Gulf Residents,” June 20, 2010).
Although the reference to vaccination was metaphorical, there are researchers working on ways to literally block the deadly effects of stress on the human brain. Whether they will be successful is in question, but the long-term harmful effects of stress are clear.
Stress increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, adult-onset diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, major depressive disorder, back pain and much more.
What are mental health workers expecting from the Gulf oil spill? “The symptoms are well-documented: The Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 touched off a wave of suicides, domestic violence, bankruptcies and alcoholism in Alaska,” according to the LA Times article.

Stress from every side

Of course, the oil spill is only one of the many sources of stress in our lives: accidents and illnesses, relationship problems, money problems, toxic workplaces, frustrating bureaucracies and a general feeling of helplessness in the face of the bad news that bombards us every day.
For example, consider unemployment and how it affects not only the jobless person, but his or her family. U.S. News'HealthDay column reported:
“‘Whenever there's a downturn, it's the kids who suffer a significant burden,' said Dr. Christopher Bellonci, an assistant professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston. ‘When families are doing well, they can buffer some of this stress. When they can't, it bleeds through to the kids.'
“Nationally, one in seven children (10.5 million kids) has an unemployed parent” (March 25, 2010).

A stress vaccine?

The August 2010 Wired magazine has the cover line: “The Search for the Stress Vaccine,” based on the research of Robert Sapolsky and others. A study published in Nature Neuroscience way back in 2004 outlined some of the promise of this research. Their work on rodents “reversed the outcome of the stress response by rendering glucocorticoids protective rather than destructive. Our findings elucidate three principal steps in the neuronal stress-response pathway, all of which are amenable to therapeutic intervention.”
But the research is still years away from clinical trials on humans. As Dr. Sapolsky said ,“It's not going to help anybody soon, but we've proved that it's possible. We can reduce the neural damage caused by stress.”
There are many hurdles to overcome, including the fact that you can't just eliminate the offending chemicals, “because they are involved in all sorts of important functions, like helping you run for your life” (Jonah Lehrer, “Under Pressure,” Wired, August 2010).
Solving stress with a vaccine is not only fraught with possible side effects and unintended consequences, it is also a long way off. What can we do in the meantime?

Stress reducers

The Wired article (which has not been uploaded to Wired.com yet, but probably will be next month) highlights a number of widely accepted stress reducers:
  • Make friends.
  • Drink in moderation.
  • Get enough sleep.
  • Don't fight.
  • Confront your fears.
  • Meditate.
  • Don't force yourself to exercise. (Here they point out that exercise is a great stress reducer, but only if you want to do it.)

Coping techniques for Christians

Jonah Lehrer explained that some of the most dangerous stress involves “feeling that nothing can be done” and a sense of hopeless “existential despair.” Stress reducers and medicines can't deal with these fundamental issues of meaning, purpose and faith. Thankfully, our Creator provides the answers to these, the most important questions of life.
God has a purpose for your life. He wants you to enjoy eternity with Him achieving a potential even greater than we can imagine. This great purpose, and the fact that nothing is outside God's control, helps us to deal with the stresses of this life. God's plan helps give us the positive perspective that allows us to confidently cope with our trials and stresses. It gives us the peace of mind and contentment that are the ultimate antidote to stress.
To learn more about what the Bible teaches about this and other mental health issues, see “The Bible's Keys to Mental Health .” It provides practical help and real hope.

In 1962 the United States and Russia came dangerously close to nuclear war over the issue of nuclear weapons based in Cuba, just a few miles off the coast of Florida. Today there are concerns expressed over the presence of a Chinese company, Hutchison Whampoa Limited, in Panama, where it has contracted to manage the entrances to the former U.S. possession. The same Chinese company is currently completing construction of the largest container port in the world in Freeport, Bahamas-just 60 miles from Florida.
While this is a far cry from placing nuclear weapons close to United States soil, it has raised concerns that a company with Communist Chinese connections is operating in two strategic geographic points very close to American interests.
Several U.S. military experts say that these activities in both Panama and the Bahamas by Hutchison Whampoa Limited, a Hong Kong-based conglomerate, pose a significant risk to U.S. national security.
Officials for Hutchison Whampoa have heatedly denied any links with the Red Chinese government, but several established connections suggest that the Chinese government has a keen interest in the company's activities.
One port facility that has captured the interest of the Chinese government is Hutchison Whampoa's sprawling port facility in the tourist destination of Freeport on Grand Bahama Island.
According to the company's Web site, the port is located at one of the most strategic spots in the world because “Freeport is the closest offshore port to the east coast of the United States, at the cross-roads of routes between Europe and the Americas and through the Panama Canal.”
Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (Republican-Mississippi) and former U.S. Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger have expressed concerns about Hutchison's influence over the Panama Canal.
Lott has described the Hong Kong firm as “an arm of the People's Liberation Army.”
Hutchison Whampoa's chairman, Li Ka-Shing, is also a board member of CITIC-the China International Trust and Investment Corporation. U.S. intelligence sources have described the firm as a front for China's governmental State Council.
Congressman Dana Rohrbacher (Republican-California) has stated that CITIC has been used as a front company by China's military to acquire technology for weapons development. A recently declassified report by the United States Southern Command's Joint Intelligence Center, prepared in October 1999, said that “Hutchison Whampoa's owner, Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-Shing, has extensive business ties in Beijing and has compelling financial reasons to maintain a good relationship with China's leadership.”
The military intelligence report also warns that “Hutchison containerized shipping facilities in the Panama Canal, as well as the Bahamas, could provide a conduit for illegal shipments of technology or prohibited items from the West to the PRC, or facilitate the movement of arms and other prohibited items into the Americas.”
Retired Admiral Thomas Moorer, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and former commander in chief of the Pacific and Atlantic Fleet said this of the Chinese efforts: “Of course the Chinese military sees the benefit of having a base, a future base, so close to the United States. What China is trying to do is get a kind of maritime position worldwide, and they need a home base, so to speak, in every ocean.” (Newsmax.com)

After 70 years of relative pacifism, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and top defense adviser Masahisa Sato seem determined to transform Japan's military capacity, freeing it from constraints imposed after World War II. Tokyo is going to increase defense spending due mainly to possible hostilities with both North Korea and China.
U.S. response has been mixed. America fears that remilitarization will worsen Japan's relationship with China. Yet Washington needs both Japan and Australia as allies in the Pacific region.
Although China and Japan are in a protracted dispute over the ownership of certain adjacent islands, “China needs to buy Japanese products as much as Japan needs to sell them” (“Mutual Assured Production,” Foreign Affairs, July-August 2013). Boycotting Japanese products might endanger the Chinese economic miracle. So mutual economic interests may keep the peace, at least for a time.
Biblical prophecy indicates that both China and Japan will likely play a major role in the fulfillment of end-time prophecy, perhaps as part of “the kings of the east,” whose forces invading the Middle East will lead to Armageddon (Revelation 16:12 Revelation 16:12And the sixth angel poured out his vial on the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

Relations likely will only be further strained with news that Russia is looking to strengthen its ties with Iran and China.
The Mideast-focused Al-Monitor reports that “Russia has taken steps to develop its trade and economic ties with Tehran” (Vitaly Naumkin, “Russia Stakes Out Iranian Market,” May 12, 2014). Furthermore, as reported by Reuters, “Russia plans to sign a contract with Iran this year to build two more nuclear reactors at its Bushehr power plant as part of a broader deal for up to eight reactors in the Islamic state” (“Russia May Build Eight Nuclear Reactors for Iran,” May 22, 2014).
A Russo-Iranian economic alliance and Russian help in advancing Iran's nuclear program may once again further isolate Russia from its Western allies. Moreover there are increased concerns about Chinese cooperation with Russia. The Associated Press reported in a story that appeared in The Detroit News:“The Obama administration is playing down an increasingly warm relationship between its main global rivals, China and Russia, that it may have inadvertently encouraged” (Matthew Lee, “Russia, China, and Where the U.S. Fits In,” May 29, 2014).
The two countries recently double-vetoed United Nations Security Council resolutions on Syria. And “with growing cooperation between Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in other areas—notably, a new $400 billion natural gas deal and apparent agreement on the crisis in Ukraine—many believe Russia and China may now or may soon represent a powerful new alliance challenging not only the United States, but also the Western democratic tradition that this country has championed globally.”
The Bible speaks of a future alliance of Eastern nations that will march on Jerusalem at the time of the end: “Then the sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, so that the way of the kings from the east might be prepared” (Revelation 16:12 Revelation 16:12And the sixth angel poured out his vial on the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.
American King James Version×
). Verse 16 says that they will gather in the place called Armageddon or Megiddo in northern Israel. (For more on this ancient battleground and its prophetic significance, read “What Is Armageddon? “.)
While the Bible doesn't tell us what nations will make up this great force, it gives us a direction—east—so that we can watch and stay alert to what is happening in the world around us (Matthew 24:42 Matthew 24:42Watch therefore: for you know not what hour your Lord does come.
