Do gay marriages really provide a stable home for children?



The Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled on Feb. 4 that full, equal marriage rights for gay couples (not just "civil unions," which are recognized in the state of Vermont), must be allowed according to their reading of the state constitution. The ruling paved the way for the first official same-sex marriages in the United States, beginning in mid-May, according to the Associated Press. (Canada, Belgium and the Netherlands already recognize same-sex marriages.) But on the very same day, a New York Times article reported that the Ohio State Legislature voted on Feb. 3 to ban same-sex unions. Ohio is the 38th state to officially prohibit same-sex unions.



The Associated Press, in a separate article the same day, reported on two women who were united in a "civil union" in Vermont in March 2002, but are now seeking a divorce in Iowa where they live. As of press time, the Iowa Supreme Court is trying to figure out if a divorce can be granted to a couple that, well, isn't married, according to Iowa law.



Iowa "recognizes only a man and a woman in a marriage, and that would also mean that a judge could not dissolve a marriage between a same-sex couple," said Neil Schuerer, a state senator.



All this confusion could be eliminated if we simply held with God's definition of marriage. In the beginning, He made man and woman to be united as "one flesh" in marriage (Genesis 2:24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

The ancient Romans worshipped gods and goddesses involved with every aspect of life. Jupiter, the chief of the gods, was the deity of rain and storms, while his wife, Juno, was the goddess of womanhood. Minerva was the goddess of handicrafts and wisdom; Venus, of sexual love and birth; Vesta, of the hearth and sacred fires; Ceres, of farming and harvests.



The Greeks considered Mercury to be the messenger of the gods, but the Romans worshipped him as the god of trade, and businessmen celebrated his feast day to increase profits. Others included Mars, god of war; Castor and Pollux, gods of sea travelers; Cronos, the guardian of time; and Cupid, god of love, whose magic arrows encouraged humans and immortals to fall in love. The list goes on and on.



Romans would generically call on "the gods," but each deity had its own cult, and worshippers would pray and conduct religious ceremonies to a specific god or goddess to ask for help. Christianity, with its emphasis on one God, was viewed by many Romans as a strange superstition or even a kind of atheism that denied the existence of the gods.



Members of the early Christian Church considered themselves "saints," meaning holy or separated to God. Paul greets the church at Philippi as "all the saints in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 1:1). However, it wasn't long before "saints," in the Roman tradition, began to take on the meaning of a special class of martyrs or performers of heroic virtue.



In the second and third centuries it became common for congregations to honor the death of a martyr by celebrating the anniversary of his or her demise. The local cult would offer prayers to the dead for intercession with God. A "saint" could eventually receive universal recognition by declaration of the bishop of Rome .



The Catholic Encyclopedia explains: "As was taught by St. Augustine ... Catholics, while giving to God alone adoration strictly so-called, honor the saints because of the Divine supernatural gifts which have earned them eternal life, and through which they reign with God in the heavenly fatherland as His chosen friends and faithful servants.



"In other words, Catholics honor God in His saints as the loving distributor of supernatural gifts. The worship of latria ...or strict adoration is given to God alone; the worship, or dulia ...or honor and humble reverence, is paid the saints; the worship of hyperdulia ...on account of her greater excellence, [is directed] to the Blessed Virgin Mary" (Vol. II, "Saints," 1907, Online Edition, 1999, Kevin Knight).



The evolution from the early Church's recognition of all members being saints to the veneration and worship of the dead is rooted in the early mixture of paganism with Christianity. The populace throughout the Roman Empire was accustomed not only to the worship of the Greek and Roman pantheon, but to cultic worship of local deities. It was an easy step for Christian congregations rooted in paganism to replace the customs of local cults with the worship of dead martyrs.



Over the centuries the Catholic Church canonized saints for many events, problems, illnesses and occupations, each celebrated with his or her own feast day. St. Stephen is the patron saint of stonemasons; doctors can pray to St. Luke, fishermen to St. Andrew and carpenters to St. Joseph. Patron saints are there for farmers, hunters, shoemakers and even comedians. The primary saint in Catholic theology is Mary, the mother of Jesus.

Hurricane Sandy Heads Toward the East Coast



Source: www.nasa.gov Hurricane Sandy has already hit the Caribbean and is moving up the east coast of the United States. 58 are reported dead already from the storm.



Sandy is expected to continue up the east coast of the United States from Florida to New England. Many cities along the coast have already been evacuated in anticipation of the pending destruction.



When natural disasters loom and lives are lost it is important to remember the words that God inspired: "... The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much."' - James 5:16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

What a Former Witch Taught Me About the Darkside

Halloween is this weekend, in case you haven’t noticed. But it’s hard not to notice. Halloween has become the second-largest retail holiday in North America. It’s second only to Christmas in sales generated by the strong consumer desire to party with the dead and macabre elements. Imitating ghosts and demons may seem like harmless fun. It’s not. Playing with the darker elements of this world is inviting strong forces into your life. You do this at your own peril.



I recently interviewed a lady who spent 20 years as a practicing witch. Her story was the centerpiece of a Beyond Today program called “Dancing With the Dark Side.” The program aired last week on WGN America and drew considerable comment from viewers.



One viewer wrote asking for help counseling a child who wished to become a witch. Another wrote detailing the disastrous impact on his family from involvement with the dark, satanic world. As my interview with “Mary” (the pseudonym for the woman who was once a witch) shows, you do not want to go down that road. Here is part of that interview.



McNeely: What do you think you were looking for when you entered into that world?



Mary: Power. To be special, to be unique.



McNeely: You think that’s what other people are looking for, as well?



Mary: Oh yes. Yeah. I mean, you get into it seeking power to control your life, manifest or will things into your life, but the bad thing about it is after it progresses, it starts taking on a negative tone. I started out with Wicca. I started out with thinking I was just worshipping the earth because I wanted something tangible, something I could see, something I could adhere to. The equinox, the sabbaths in Wicca. It soon didn’t feel like enough.



I felt compelled to check out or read books about necromancy and voodoo, and like I said, I was in it for about 20 years and there toward the end, I felt like if I hadn’t had the car wreck, I would’ve been gone, because I would’ve opened myself up to channeling. I’d already started using my own blood in my own rituals, in my own spells. I’d already started making voodoo dolls and casting bad spells on people.



McNeely: Did you actually see those spells come to pass?



Mary: Mhm.



McNeely: You did?



Mary: Yes.



McNeely: Things happened?



Mary: Yes. Things always happened.



Mary went on to explain that people who dabble with the dark arts are looking for a power to control their lives and that of others. They end up being controlled by a darker power they do not understand. Fortunately for Mary, she escaped the hold of the dark side and is building a better life for herself. She finally is in control of her life, in a right way.

Satan offers a clever counterfeit path to power for those who venture into his dark world. But the tragedy is that his path is a dead-end street filled with wrecked and broken lives. Evil is a very real force in this modern world that scoffs at the existence of a spiritual dimension. Though the media often trivializes it today, there is indeed a dark spiritual world, and it wants to deceive and destroy you. Don’t let it happen. Resist it, and cling to the incredible future God has prepared for you.

So that's their excuse—they've got to have another cigarette, cigar, pipe, joint or whatever inhaled hot poison. Never mind that St. Peter isn't in heaven because people don't go to heaven when they die (request or download a free copy of Heaven and Hell: What Does the Bible Really Teach? for details).



In fact, "heaven" is coming to earth in the person of Jesus Christ—soon. Those who are forgiven and obedient will be resurrected to an incredible eternal life in the Kingdom of God like they've never dreamed of before. But there will be a rule there—no smoking allowed.



This rule may make the currently popular, politically correct, antismoking crowd happy, but they've likely got some issues they'll have to deal with too. So what is the deal about smoking, whether tobacco, marijuana or whatever? Is it a sin?



Not food, not drink



When God made man and woman, He gave them dominion over the earthly creation that He had actually made for them in the first place. Then He clearly told them which animals they should use for food and which they should consider unclean and, thus, not food (Leviticus 11).



He gave man all the plants on earth. Some were for animal food, some for human food and some for sheer beauty and other worthy uses. God also provided man liquids to drink like water, milk, teas, juices (the fermented variety only in careful moderation), etc.



Tobacco, however, is neither a human food nor drink. In fact it's poisonous. Only a senseless person would try to eat or drink it. And only a senseless person would try to inhale its smoke while it burns only inches in front of his or her nose! The whole idea of smoking is ludicrous. But ludicrous, crazy ideas have long been popular with a humanity that refuses to follow God's way of living.



I could tell you how bad smoking is for your health. Even King James I of England could tell you that. He called it "a custome lathsome to the eye, hateful to the nose, harmeful to the braine, dangerous to the lungs, and the black stinking fume thereof, nearest resembling the horrible Stigian smoke of the pit that is bottomlesse" ( Counterblaste to Tobacco , 1604).



I could tell you that smoking and smokeless tobacco cause cancer. But that's been done before. "A mid-eighteenth- century detractor who described tobacco as a narcotic akin to opium, warned that snuff-taking was liable to cause the loss of the sense of smell, addiction, nasal tumors and cancer" ("Tobacco," The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Substances, 1998).



I could tell you all that, but I won't because you already know the scientific reasons why the weed is bad for you. Yet did you just notice how tobacco use causes the loss of smell—and must dull the sense of taste so closely linked with it? Ever wondered why so many smokers frequent restaurants not noted for excellent or even mediocre cuisine? They can't taste or smell well enough to tell the difference. Who wants to go through life with a tongue and nasal cavity that's been cured like a ham in a smokehouse?



Smoking is against God and neighbor



Jesus listed for us the two greatest commandments of all:



1. Love God with all your heart and being, and



2. Love your neighbor as yourself (Matthew 22:37-39 [37] Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

[38] This is the first and great commandment.

[39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

Does smoking show love toward God? No.



God considers your personal, human body as sacred. "Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit . . . and you are not your own?" (1 Corinthians 6:19What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?



See All...). Smoking and chewing tobacco both damage the body. And there is no reason for using tobacco products in these ways except for the temporary gratification of self (and ruining of the self in the long run, which God does not want). That lack of respect and honor for what God calls the temple of His Spirit is itself a sin.



Furthermore, the slavish-addiction aspect of smoking elevates it above God in one's motivations, as explained below.



Does smoking show love toward neighbor? No.



Sitting there sucking hard on a cigarette, pipe or cigar is an action of fundamental selfishness (though it will ultimately hurt oneself). It harms your neighbor, while God says, "Love does no harm to a neighbor" (Romans 13:10Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.



See All...). Smoking harms both by the unhealthy effects of secondhand smoke and causing discomfort by selfishly fouling the air for everyone in the vicinity.



Summary: Smoking is sinful because it is self-indulgent, slavishly self-destructive, neighbor-harming and, in all these respects, God-ignoring. "Therefore, to him who knows to do good [as in to not smoke] and does not do it, to him it is sin" (James 4:17Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

Smoking is a god

Needing new and never-ending supplies of nicotine slaves to maintain their profits, tobacco companies specifically target teens and young adults as start-up smokers. But aside from that, why does that age group start smoking?



"My friends smoke." "I just wanted to try it." "I thought it was cool." "My parents smoke." One of the biggest reasons teens start to smoke is peer influence. Over 70 percent of Canadian teens say that having friends who smoke and/or peer pressure is the number one reason for starting to smoke (www.lung.ca ).



Nicotine slaves feel guilty smoking alone; they want converts to make them feel comfortable. And wherever there is a smoking evangelist, there are the foolishly willing converts. But why do these peers smoke in the first place? And what can you do about it?



Tobacco, marijuana and about any smokable drug can cause body and brain addiction, as mentioned earlier. But becoming an addict (to anything) involves choosing, more and more, to become subservient, slavelike, worshipful and groveling to the thing. That means making the thing (in this case smoking) more important than God in your life.



Elevating any other motivating factor in life before the true God is bad news. It's called idolatry. It's called breaking the very first of the great and awesome Ten Commandments. Make no mistake, smoking breaks Commandment One. So, again, smoking is a sin. What you can do about that is never start smoking or, if you have been smoking, quit.

A small defense of tobacco



Is there anything good about tobacco? Yes, indeed. There are some medicinal uses like poultices but the best thing about the weed is that it can defend other plants from insects. "A water/nicotine mixture has been used as an insecticide since 1746" (http://faculty.washington.edu ).



Tobacco is a bug spray! Why in the world would people want to smoke, chew or snuff bug spray?



God knew what He was doing. He didn't make tobacco products for food or drink. Their use certainly violates the principle of God's perfect and divine law. Sin will not enter the eternal, fabulous Kingdom of God . It's frightening to think that awesome, incredible, human potential could be completely missed because someone stubbornly insisted on continuing to inhale bug spray. VT

The gay agenda is steadily gaining ground in Western nations, with same-sex marriage finding acceptance. But what does the Bible say—and why? And what's at the root of same-sex attraction?



The U.S. Supreme Court's June decision striking down state laws banning homosexual acts between consenting adults was the latest victory in the cultural war between those advocating full acceptance of homosexuality in public life and those opposed on various grounds.



It followed decisions announced earlier in the month from Britain that a law banning the promotion of homosexuality in schools would be repealed and a stunning announcement from Canada that an Ontario appeals court had ruled that refusing same-sex couples the rights of marriage was discriminatory.



A similar decision is now pending in the Massachusetts Supreme Court, with major implications for the other 49 American states —which are constitutionally obligated to recognize the actions of all other states. With two European countries already allowing it, and several others allowing civil unions, same-sex marriage is a major and growing issue.



Nor is this only a secular issue. In August the U.S.-based Episcopalian Church shocked many of its members by approving its first openly homosexual bishop and giving local dioceses the option of deciding whether to perform same-sex marriages.



How did marriage begin?

Marriage is a constant theme throughout the Bible, as we might expect it to be. After all, the Bible is largely about human relationships, and none is so fundamental as marriage.



At the beginning, when God created Adam, the first man, He said: "It is not good that man should be alone" (Genesis 2:18And the LORD God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.



See All...). God created for him a female companion, Eve, meaning "life" or "living," for "she was the mother of all living" (Genesis 3:20And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

God's plan for the male and female sexes is then clearly instituted: "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh" (Genesis 2:24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.



See All...). In joining them as man and wife, the Creator of mankind instituted marriage. In the next verse Adam and Eve are clearly described as a married couple: "And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (verse 25).



Thousands of years later we see the covenant relationship between God and the nation of Israel, whom He had chosen, likened to the marital relationship (Isaiah 54:5For thy Maker is thine husband; the LORD of hosts is his name; and thy Redeemer the Holy One of Israel; The God of the whole earth shall he be called.

In the New Testament, Jesus Christ reinforces the special relationship between a husband and wife: "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,' and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate" (Matthew 19:4-6 [4] And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female,

[5] And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?

[6] Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

He stated further: "Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so" (verse 8). Clearly, marriage between a husband and wife was intended to be for life.



Following the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the apostle Paul wrote extensively on marriage. In his epistle to the Ephesians, chapter 5, he compares the marital union of a husband and wife to the relationship between Christ and the Church.



He writes: "For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church ... Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her ... that He might present her to Himself a glorious church ... So husbands ought to love their own wives ..." (verses 23-28).



Later we see, at the very close of the Bible, a time still ahead when Jesus Christ returns and marries His Bride, the Church (Revelation 19:7Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.



See All...). In these scriptural references we see a totally committed relationship between Jesus Christ and His true followers, the Church.



The Western crisis in marriage

Today we live in an age in which commitment within marriage has become rare, especially in the richer Western world. For centuries the laws of Western nations relating to marriage were very strict. Divorce was not usually permitted.



In the last century, however, we have seen dramatic changes in laws relating to marriage. Among the most significant were the no-fault divorce laws passed in most of the Western democracies a little over 30 years ago. These laws contributed greatly to the trivialization of marriage, making it easier for a husband or wife to walk away from that commitment.



At the same time, the availability of the birth control pill made it quite acceptable for unmarried couples to live together, as supposedly there were now no negative consequences to sex outside of marriage. These major societal shifts further diminished the marital relationship even as they encouraged a vast rise in premarital sex and adultery.



In turn, these were—and still are—promoted as "alternative lifestyles," with mass media constantly depicting temporary relationships without commitment as fun and faithful marriage as tedious. The tragic result was an explosion of terrible consequences—broken homes, abandoned children, depression, crime, substance abuse and sexually transmitted diseases that remain with us today.



Another major shift in sexual attitudes

In the "anything goes" atmosphere of the 1960s and 70s, it was only a matter of time before other lifestyles would become accepted.



Before 1973 American psychiatrists considered same-sex attraction (homosexuality) as abnormal behavior and offered treatment accordingly. But a decision that year reversed this long-held stand. No longer was same-sex attraction classified as abnormal.



Similar decisions had already been made in other Western nations. In a span of 30 years, people practicing homosexual acts would go from being considered criminals by society to being accepted, if not fully embraced, by much of the heterosexual community.



In recent years same-sex couples have increasingly pressed for the legal option of entering a full marital union. Two European countries, Belgium and the Netherlands, already have laws permitting such marriages. Several other European countries allow civil unions, which give same-sex couples the same rights as heterosexual couples without a legal marriage. The American state of Vermont also permits same-sex civil unions.



Following the June Ontario appeals court decision that ruled in favor of same-sex unions being equal to heterosexual unions, the Canadian government announced that it would legislate same-sex marriages into law in the near future. In the United States, Massachusetts appears likely to make a similar decision in favor of same-sex marriages. It seems only a matter of time before the whole country follows suit.



It should be noted that, in the United States at least, it is the courts that have made these changes possible rather than the voters, as polls consistently show that a majority of Americans do not support same-sex marriage. Federal and state lawmakers wouldn't risk the ire of voters on this issue, and even Canada is simply following a decision of the court.



As with so many of the liberal social reforms of the last four decades, the courts have played a leading role in changing society, with activist judges sometimes arbitrarily creating new rights and law where none were previously spelled out.



While many on both sides of the argument will claim that this is a worldwide issue, the fact remains that this is essentially a Western phenomenon, thereby further widening the gap between the rich Western democracies and the poorer nations.



The fault lines are also spreading throughout the Western religious world, with major international church denominations facing increasing division over this issue and that of the ordination of homosexual clergy.



Does the Bible offer guidance?

Why doesn't the Bible mention same-sex marriages? The answer is simple—no such institution existed when it was written! No matter how bad some of the societies described in the Bible were, they never went so far as to have same-sex marriages.



Make no mistake, the Word of God approves only one sexual relationship: that between a husband and wife within marriage. You can search the Scriptures from Genesis to Revelation looking for the existence or approval of such alternative relationships as living together and same-sex marriage, but there is none. Certainly there are accounts of fornication, adultery and same-sex relationships, but they are always in the context of sin, which is the breaking of God's law (1 John 3:4Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

And yes, some of God's most faithful servants committed sins in the sexual area—and the Bible duly records the painful consequences their actions had on them and others. These servants of God allowed themselves to be unduly influenced by the society around them, just as Christians can be today.



So why does our Creator forbid all sexual relationships outside of marriage? Does He not want us to have what some consider to be fun? Does God not want those who are attracted to the same sex to have the same happiness, commitment and sense of fulfillment that is achievable within a committed, lifelong, heterosexual marriage?



In John 10:10The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy: I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.



See All... Jesus Christ states, "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." God wants us to be happy, to live fulfilled and joyful lives.



That is precisely why He gave us the Ten Commandments, some of which deal with the family relationship. It is also part of the reason He instituted marriage. Within the framework of a stable, committed marriage, people can find a sense of loving security. Children especially need this when they are brought into the world.



So why can't gay couples have it too? Some argue that they also deserve the happiness of a stable and committed marriage. And in this age of AIDS and many other terrible diseases, shouldn't we encourage same-sex partners to remain faithful to one another, just as we do heterosexual couples through the institution of marriage?



Sex and the Bible

In the Bible, marriage is always between a husband and wife. There are no scriptural accounts of same-sex marriages, even though homosexual relationships were common and sometimes encouraged in the Greco-Roman world of early New Testament times (although an exclusively homosexual orientation was considered an aberration even in that society, which understood the necessity of heterosexual marriage for the production and raising of children).



Pagan gentile society notwithstanding, both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible clearly condemn sexual acts between members of the same sex. "You shall not lie with a male as with a woman. It is an abomination," says Leviticus 18:22Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.

Why does the Bible forbid such behavior? God created the first two human beings male and female, bound them as husband and wife in a sexual union and instructed them to have children (Genesis 2:24-25 [24] Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

See All...; 1:28). The biblical account of our first human parents makes it clear that God ordained the marriage of Adam and Eve, creating the family union of a man and a woman.



God designed this union to stabilize and protect male-female and parent-child relationships with love and security. It was also designed to serve as a pattern or model of the relationship God wants to have with His people (Ephesians 5:23-33 [23] For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.

[24] Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing.

[25] Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it;

[26] That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

[27] That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

There is no question that male-female attraction is God's intended design. Homosexuality, on the other hand, is a developmental disorder that leads to actions and lifestyles diametrically opposite to the male-female design.



When Adam and Eve rejected God's instructions and determined to do things their own way, they set humanity on a course that every human being since has chosen to follow. Consequently, as a result of man's rejection of God, men and women are experiencing an array of confused or conflicted interpersonal relationships—including homosexuality. Although homosexuality may feel "natural" to people who have same-sex attraction, it in fact reflects a yearning that God intended to be met within the natural male-female family context, with parents providing the proper natural affection and approval their children need.



Man and woman: A perfect creation

When God created Adam and Eve, "they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed" (Genesis 2:25And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.



See All...). Additionally, we read that "God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good" (Genesis 1:31And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

This tells us that God's creation was "very good," including His creation of the first man and the first woman, Adam and Eve. Even their naked bodies were physically perfect, created differently, but also perfectly, to complement each other and to bring additional human beings into the world, in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-28 [26] And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

[27] So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

[28] And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.





See All...). Adam was pleased with his new companion, to whom he remained married for a very long time, until death. He was clearly attracted to her—they gave birth to many children.



What we learn from these passages is that a man should naturally be attracted to the female body. As Adam and Eve were the only two people living at this time, they could walk around unclothed without any sense of shame or embarrassment.



God intended men to be attracted to women, and vice versa. When a man is not attracted to women, something has gone wrong in the natural development of his mind, as this is not the way God intended things to be.



Causes of same-sex attraction

It is common today for men who consider themselves gay to say that they were born that way, but there is no convincing evidence for this. Homosexuality is not caused by a "gay gene," or identical twins would always both be gay—and they usually aren't.



What is the truth? As most homosexual males and some lesbians can only remember same-sex attractions, even when very young, we can conclude that their early development was affected in some way that led to a different sexual orientation.



Research has shown that the basic common cause of homosexuality, whether male or female, is an emotional detachment from the parent of the same sex (see interview with Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, page 20). This causes insecurity about the child's own masculinity (or femininity) and makes the forming of friendship bonds with those of the same sex much more difficult, frequently leading to painful rejection. Often added to this in the case of boys is a mother who overly compensates, giving the son too much female affection and fawning over in the early stages of his life.



Deprived of normal male love and affection, the boy starts out in life with a desperate longing for what is a legitimate unmet need. The inevitable attraction to the same sex in itself is not a sin. Later on, however, that need often becomes sexualized—leading to sinful homosexual acts with other boys and men. At the same time, the smothering love and affection he received from his mother often will have contributed to a rejection of women as a source of love.



This developmental tragedy often takes place within the first two or three years of childhood. Typically, in the first year, a baby bonds with the mother as she gives birth to the child and then breastfeeds and generally nurtures him. After the child is weaned, the father must play a more prominent role.



This is the time when sexual identity is formed. If the father is absent, or unwilling or unable to fulfill his role, then the child will feel rejection—and the basis on which homosexual feelings can develop will have been laid.



Note the importance of perception—either of the lack of loving affection or of rejection. In some cases a father truly may be affectionate and loving to his son, but the boy may not perceive it and instead develops feelings of rejection.



Or, in a family of several boys where the father is so busy with work or other things that he fails to spend any time with them, all are neglected, but only one may turn out to have homosexual tendencies. This is the one who perceived rejection, perhaps because he was more sensitive than the others.



Struggle for those dealing with same-sex attraction

Sadly, these tendencies and unmet needs remain. Because this lack becomes a part of one's mental and emotional makeup at such an early age, it should be understood that exclusively same-sex attraction is seldom a voluntary, conscious choice.



Homosexual acts, however, just like heterosexual acts, are a voluntary choice. While the attraction may be there in a way that is not a matter of choice, it is one's choice to dwell on or entertain thoughts that can lead to sin. Jesus Christ pointed out that mentally entertaining thoughts of illicit sexual acts is itself a sin (Matthew 5:27-28 [27] Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not commit adultery:

[28] But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart.

Paul urged Christians to be aware of the spiritual struggles in which all of us are engaged, emphasizing our need to discipline our thoughts and bring "every thought into captivity" (2 Corinthians 10:4-5 [4] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)

[5] Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;





See All...). James, Jesus' half-brother, wrote that mentally dwelling on temptations typically leads us into lust and sin, so we must short-circuit the process before sin results (James 1:14-15 [14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.

[15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Some give in to their same-sex attraction later on in life and enter the gay lifestyle. Others, often due to religious beliefs, try to fight their desires and overcome them. These people are often called strugglers, reflecting the reality that it is a lifetime struggle. Another term increasingly used is healers, recognizing that they are seeking emotional healing for their condition. A combination of both terms (struggler-healer) is appropriate.



Many people with same-sex attraction experience social isolation and emotional pain as they struggle to cope with their lives. Some endure a struggle between coping with their homosexuality and remaining faithful to their religious beliefs. For many, it is a lonely, secret struggle that can sometimes involve excruciating pain.



Some give in to their same-sex attraction and enter the gay lifestyle. Others, in spite of their pain, continue to struggle, often in isolation, to remain faithful to their religious beliefs. In recent years, a number of social and religious organizations have recognized the need to help and support these individuals who struggle to be faithful to their religious convictions, although the work of these organizations has often been viewed as controversial.



This is where churches and individual Christians can help. Those who struggle with same-sex attraction not only battle with their unnatural sexual desires every day of their lives, they also have to do so in secret. Sometimes they seek help from others. Typically, they will either go to their church pastor or priest, seek psychological help or talk to a close friend. All three choices are problematic. Seeking help from the wrong person can lead to even greater withdrawal and a deepening fear of sharing with anyone.



Some church pastors may overreact when the problem of same-sex attraction is brought to them. This can push the person seeking and needing help into further isolation, even to the point of feeling rejected by God. Some people have made things worse by betraying the confidence of the individual out of misguided concern for others in the congregation.



Seeking professional psychiatric help can also be a problem for struggler-healers. Since the American Psychiatric Association's change of policy on homosexuality 30 years ago, most of those seeking help today will not be encouraged to change, but rather to reaffirm their same-sex feelings and embrace the gay lifestyle.



Sharing the problem with a friend can often end a friendship, as most men cannot handle a confession of homosexual feelings. Another obvious complication is the possibility of physical feelings developing toward the friend. While this is a problem that will need to be resolved, it should not rule out helping someone struggling with same-sex attraction.



Since the root cause of such attraction is rejection causing emotional detachment, someone struggling with this problem will find further rejection devastating. Not having had a close, loving relationship with the father in early childhood, there is a great need for such a relationship with another male. This need should be met in a nonsexual relationship with a heterosexual male who wants to help.



The apostle James wrote: "Confess your trespasses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The effective, fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much" (James 5:16Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.



See All...). It should be possible for Christians to share their problems with other Christians, expecting help and encouragement in return, even when their problem is one of unresolved homosexual desires and feelings.



Sadly, most people who struggle with this problem will say that the response to sharing is usually negative. They soon learn to shut up and keep their problem a secret. Many, through discouragement, have even given up on trying to live God's way and have sought solace and acceptance in the gay community.



However, this is never the answer for a Christian. Christians realize that God gave us His laws because He cares for us. Certain sexual relationships are forbidden because they can never satisfy and lead to great emotional pain from which God wants to spare us.



The apostle Paul wrote: "Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body.



See All...). This is not just a warning against sexually transmitted diseases. It is also a warning against all the emotional damage that results from unfulfilling relationships based on sex, whether heterosexual or homosexual. Sadly, this lack of fulfillment for homosexuals often leads them into more and more sin, in a desperate and futile attempt to find the love they never thought or felt they received as a child.



Encouraging lessons from ancient Corinth

We learn from the apostle Paul's letters, preserved in the New Testament, that some people in the Corinthian church had come out of this homosexual lifestyle to become truly converted Christians.



Corinth was a port city in which all kinds of sexual and other vices were all too common, and notice that Paul warns the Church members there against slipping into such sins. "Do not be deceived," he wrote. "Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites ... will inherit the kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10 [9] Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind,

[10] Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God.





See All...). The separate references to "homosexuals" and "sodomites" in Greek refers to different roles taken in homosexual couples.



We should note that in Paul's writings here, he condemns not only homosexual acts, but fornication and adultery as well. Too many Christians are quick to turn a blind eye to their own heterosexual sins while quickly condemning homosexual acts on the part of others.



It cannot be emphasized enough: All sexual acts outside of a biblically sanctioned marriage are a sin. The apostle James put it well when he wrote, "For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all" (James 2:10For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.



See All...). So gay-bashing—attacking gays or singling out homosexual behavior as the worst sin—is unjustified.



In the following verse of 1 Corinthians 6, those struggling with same-sex attraction can read some very encouraging words from Paul: "And such were some of you," he notes. "But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God" (verse 11).



"And such were some of you" is in the past tense. The implication of this is clear: There were people in this Greek-speaking congregation, in a part of the world where homosexual acts were typically considered normal, who came out of their homosexual practices upon repentance and were able to overcome their desires.



What happens when society rejects God?

Although homosexuality is common to all cultures, it is in the Western democracies that the gay movement is most vocal. This was not the case even 50 years ago. This could mean that there are more people with homosexual leanings today than there were then, although militant gays would argue that it simply reflects progress made by them in gaining societal acceptance.



The truth, however, is that the greater numbers can easily be explained by the fact that the traditional family has progressively broken down in the last four decades with easier divorce and greater promiscuity. Absent or distant fathers are more common now than ever before, creating conditions in which the factors that may lead to homosexuality can flourish.



Writing to the church in Rome, Paul wrote a passage of Scripture that is quite applicable today. He showed a certain progression that takes place in human thinking that flows from man's rejection of God.



"... Although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Professing to be wise, they became fools, and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things. Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves ...



"For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature. Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting" (Romans 1:21-28 [21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.

What this passage shows is that man progressively moves farther and farther away from God's way of thinking when he rejects the Bible. Our societies testify to this fact. Since the theory of evolution gained popularity a century and a half ago, Western nations have progressively distanced themselves from God. Now the thinking of most people is warped, not based on and often not even taking into consideration godly values or biblical teaching.



The theory of evolution—and its attendant arguments that there is no such thing as a Creator and that the Bible is merely a collection of myths—has affected man's thinking to the point of acceptance of gay marriage. It has taken a long time, yes, but the link is there. When people believe that human beings are nothing more than highly evolved animals, there is no basis for saying "no" to same-sex marriage—and many other things as well.



When God's Word has been rejected by government and banished from schools and public life, anything is acceptable. After gay marriage, can we expect to see pressure to legalize group marriage, incest and pedophilia? After all, the same rationale the U.S. Supreme Court used in striking down state laws against sodomy also applies to these sins.



Collectively, Western society is heading down the same road as ancient Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities that God destroyed for their varied sins—one of which was homosexuality, Sodom giving its name to sodomy. Yet individually, everyone has the opportunity to repent and come out of this society's sliding standards and morals, to embrace God's way and fight, with His help, against any tendencies that do not conform to His law. This is the only way to true happiness and fulfillment.

We sincerely hope that in the very near future you and your children will learn more about God's Holy Days and begin observing them rather than Halloween and other days of pagan origin that are of no value for teaching spiritual truths.



The claim is now circulating that money spent on observing Halloween is second only to that spent on celebrating Christmas.



Actually, all popular holidays are now commercialized. Money is driving this artificial popularity . Without holiday advertising, retail profits would plummet.



But as it is, lots of people spend lots of money on holidays.



For Halloween, mega-bucks are spent on candy, costumes, carnivals, decorations, booze and extravagant high-tech haunted houses.



MSN Money reports (9/15/09), "Halloween is now, behind Christmas, the second biggest retail holiday in America. Americans are expected to spend over $7 billion this year on costumes, candy, attending parties and much more. Over the past three years, the popularity of Halloween has tripled …"



Of all the holidays in the Western world, Halloween —a holiday that celebrates nothing positive or noble—is having the greatest increase in popularity!



Surge in adult partying and masquerading!

Adult partying on Halloween has been rapidly increasing since the 1980's.



Halloween is now the third biggest adult party day of the year—behind only New Year's Eve and Super Bowl Sunday. Money spent on adult costumes may now be surpassing money spent on children's costumes!



For decades, adult partying on Halloween has been popular among those who actively subscribe to in the gay lifestyle. One participant, in an online article titled "Halloween: The Great Gay Holiday" says "Halloween's appeal to the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities … has a lot to do with … our propensity for cross-dressing and gender-bending… and our special capacity to have fun. [We] cherish it…" (posted October 27, 2008, The Bilerico Project).



The origin of Halloween

The ancient Celts regarded November 1 as the start of a new year, also as an annual holiday called Samhain.



October 31 was New Year's Eve! That night was considered the night of the dead, when spirits of the wicked dead were believed to haunt the living. People would leave offerings of food and drink at their front doors to appease the unfriendly ghosts and demons. So the origin of "trick or treat" is the pagan belief that evil spirits had the equivalent of a modern protection racket—"you give food or we break your leg!"



Church leaders adopt pagan practices

To Christianize the pagans Roman Christianity took the easy approach of relabeling pagan days and practices! They reasoned that the converts could continue observing their old ways if they used them to honor the God of the Bible. That is how many pagan days and practices acquired Christian labels!



And it is how the pagan festival Samhain came be relabeled as All Saints Day or All Hallows Day. Thus, the night before became All Hallows Even , later contracted to Hallowe'en —and is now just Halloween. Its purpose was to placate the not-so-hallowed spirits—the demonic or evil spirits. That is why a witch's costume is so popular for Halloween evening.



Does it matter to God?

To those who don't consider what God thinks, the origins of Halloween would probably seem irrelevant. What would matter most to them is, "Is it fun?"



But for those who believe in God's Word it's a different story! The Bible says specifically that God detests pagan religious customs (Galatians 4:8-10 [8] Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods.

[9] But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?

[10] Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.

According to the Bible our ultimate destiny depends on pleasing God. And the only real authority on what pleases God is the Bible.



God's Holy Days rather than unholy holidays

Four of God's festivals that God originally gave Old Testament Israel and were kept by Jesus Christ, Paul and the early Church occur in the fall.



These special festivals that have been observed by God's people down through the ages—including members of the United Church of God—are the Feast of Trumpets , the Day of Atonement , the Feast of Tabernacles and the Last Great Day .



God designated these deeply meaningful days to teach important truths about His great master plan as well as for worshipping and enjoying fellowship and wholesome activities with other likeminded believers.



The Day of Atonement pictures, among other things, the momentous time when Christ will remove the worldwide influence of the real evil spirits —Satan and the demons (Revelation 12:9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

 Violence against American diplomats in Libya remind us how quickly religion can inflame the region.









[Darris McNeely] The Middle East has once again erupted into violence. Unfortunately this week, an attack took place on the American Embassy Compound in Libya, the city of Benghazi. Four American diplomats were killed, including the ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens. It was a very unfortunate situation. This marks the first time since 1979 that a sitting ambassador has been killed in the country in which he is serving. And it highlights once again the volatility of the entire region, but as well the impact of religion and what it can do to suddenly provoke a problem and a reaction, and again even a larger war within this highly important area of the Middle East.



[Steve Myers] There's no doubt that religion had a major part to play in this whole incident because that was the backdrop, whether the leaders were actually convinced of that, but it was certainly used to provoke this whole incident. And it shows how easily people can be motivated by some of these kinds of things.



[Darris McNeely] In this case it was a video that was done that was purporting to cast the Prophet Muhammad in an unfavorable light. And yet likely this was planned because it also took place on the anniversary of 9/11 - the attacks on Washington and New York City 11 years ago. But again it just brings up the point that the wars of religion - we did a program on Beyond Today a few years ago about the wars of religion. Religion is still a very potent force in world affairs and culture. And as much as some people in the West especially would like to think that religion in a sense does not play a significant role, things like this happen in the Middle East to remind us that religion does play a very important role.



[Steve Myers] It's a huge role, and it's a prophetic role that we can't ignore. Daniel 11 talks a lot about that, it talks about the coming times, and how religion really will be a cornerstone to some of the issues that are going to be facing the world here shortly.



[Darris McNeely] Daniel 11:40And at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, and with horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter into the countries, and shall overflow and pass over.



See All... is a key verse in Bible prophecy that we are looking at to be fulfilled. It talks about the time of the end yet ahead of us when "The king of the South shall attack him and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind." Now what in general terms this prophecy is doing is describing a provocation where it says, "The king of the North shall attack." Excuse me, "The king of the South will attack." The king of the South is identified as the power coming out of the Middle East and in whatever way it provokes a reaction against another power here called the king of the North to come and to invade into the region. And interestingly as this prophecy goes on - of course, this is verse 40 - it goes on in verse 43 to mention even the very country Libya that we're talking about here (Daniel 11:43But he shall have power over the treasures of gold and of silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt: and the Libyans and the Ethiopians shall be at his steps.

If you read through all of Daniel 11 you find these descriptors of people's attitudes and their minds, where it talks about strife, where it talks about violence, where it talks about stirring things up. And boy have we seen that this week. That's what's happening.

How did Halloween come to be considered a "Christian" celebration?

Originally Halloween was a pagan festival oriented around fire, the dead and the powers of darkness. How did it become accepted in the "Christian" world?



Answer:



Most people know that Halloween takes place on Oct. 31. Far fewer understand the connection between Halloween and the next day on the calendar, the festival of All Hallows' or All Saints' Day, celebrated by some churches and denominations Nov. 1.



One author concludes that All Saints' Day was established to commemorate the saints and martyrs of the Roman Catholic Church and was first introduced in the seventh century (Man, Myth, and Magic, Vol. 1, 1983, p. 109). Oddly enough, history shows that Halloween—this ancient, thoroughly pagan holiday with its trappings of death and demonism—is inseparably tied to All Saints' Day.



Pagan festivals have had a curious way of worming their way into Christianity over the centuries. The Encyclopedia of Religion explains that "the British church attempted to divert the interest in pagan customs by adding a Christian celebration to the calendar on the same date as the Samhain [the ancient Celtic name for the festival that we call Halloween].



"The Christian festival, the Feast of All Saints, commemorates the known and unknown saints of the Christian religion just as the Samhain had acknowledged and paid tribute to the Celtic deities" (1987, Vol. 6, p. 177).



How did this strange turn of events come about? How did the Catholic Church transform an ancient pagan festival into one to supposedly honor dead saints?



The 1913 edition of The Catholic Encyclopedia says this about All Saints' Day: "In the early days the Christians were accustomed to solemnize the anniversary of a martyr's death for Christ at the place of martyrdom. In the fourth century, neighboring dioceses began to interchange feasts, to transfer relics, to divide them, and to join in a common feast. Frequently groups of martyrs suffered on the same day, which naturally led to a joint commemoration.



"In the persecution of Diocletian the number of martyrs became so great that a separate day could not be assigned to each. But the Church, feeling that every martyr should be venerated, appointed a common day for all. [Eventually] Gregory III (731-741) consecrated a chapel in the basilica of St. Peter to all the saints and fixed the anniversary for 1 November" (Vol. 1, p. 315).



Pope Gregory's choice of Nov. 1 for this celebration was significant. Author Lesley Bannatyne explains: "That the date coincided with Samhain was no accident: the Church was still trying to absorb pagan celebrations taking place at this time...



"Villagers were also encouraged to masquerade on this day, not to frighten unwelcome spirits, but to honor Christian saints. On All Saints' Day, churches throughout Europe and the British Isles displayed relics of their patron saints. Poor churches could not afford genuine relics and instead had processions in which parishioners dressed as saints, angels and devils. This religious masquerade resembled the pagan custom of parading ghosts to the town limits. It served the new church by giving an acceptable Christian basis to the custom of dressing up on Halloween.



"In addition, the Church tried to convince the people that the great bonfires they lit in homage to the sun would instead keep the devil away" (Halloween: An American Holiday, An American History, 1998, pp. 9, 11).



Later a second celebration, All Souls' Day, was instituted on Nov. 2. Eventually these two holidays merged into the present observance on Nov. 1, which was also called All Hallows' Day. The name of All Hallows' Even (evening) for the night of Oct. 31 evolved into the name Hallowe'en, or Halloween as it is called today.



This is a brief history of how men rationalized taking an ancient pagan festival rooted in death and demonism and adapting it for use as a "Christian" celebration. Regrettably, it flies in the face of God's explicit instruction to not use pagan practices to worship Him.



He clearly states in Deuteronomy 12:30-32 [30] Take heed to thyself that thou be not snared by following them, after that they be destroyed from before thee; and that thou enquire not after their gods, saying, How did these nations serve their gods? even so will I do likewise.

[31] Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God: for every abomination to the LORD, which he hateth, have they done unto their gods; for even their sons and their daughters they have burnt in the fire to their gods.

[32] What thing soever I command you, observe to do it: thou shalt not add thereto, nor diminish from it.

You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods... Addictions to Prescription Painkillers Are Epidemic!

Many people are plagued by addictions. One of the most common and most harmful addictions is to prescription painkillers. How can you avoid this sort of addiction? If you currently are addicted to these drugs, how can you get help? Read to find out!

Quick relief from severe suffering is a welcome blessing, but prescription pain medications often turn into a curse when abused.



When you think about drug abuse and drug addictions, you may tend to think of three images: rich superstars (think Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley), foolish kids, and "bad" people who often end up in prison. But there are millions of "good" people, young and old, who are addicted to prescription drugs, often without anyone else knowing about it.



The commonly abused prescription drugs

When you hear about addictions to "drugs," you may think first of street drugs, such as cocaine, heroin and methamphetamine ("meth"). But the number of people addicted to prescription drugs is greater than the number of addictions to all three of those street drugs combined.



The prescription drugs most commonly abused are the ones most commonly prescribed , which fall into three categories:



1. Opiods (narcotic analgesics, i.e., pain relievers) such as oxycodone (Oxycontin and Percocet), hydrocodone (Vicodin) and meperidine (Demerol).



2. Sedatives and tranquilizers such as Valium, Xanax and Nembutal.



3. Stimulants such as Ritalin, Adderall and Dexedrine.



The most commonly abused category? The painkillers . And because addictions to painkillers in the U.S. are epidemic, even among expectant mothers, there is also an epidemic of babies who are born addicted to painkillers . The suffering newborns then have to be gradually weaned off that drug. Very, very sad.



What is addiction? What is "drug abuse"?

Addiction can be either a physical (biological, chemical and pathological) or psychological dependence (an emotional longing for the effects of the drug—which can lead to physical addiction). People often experience both at the same time.



When an addictive substance is regularly ingested, that person's body will eventually build up a tolerance to it so larger amounts are needed over time to achieve the same result. This temptation to increase the dosage often leads to addiction.



Be forewarned that physical addictions are often permanent, which means the addicted person will have a life-long battle trying to resist the temptation to relapse into again using that drug.



Addictions to prescription drugs usually occur only when the prescription is "abused." Abuse includes many easy-to-make mistakes: taking more pills or more frequently than prescribed, taking them after the pain has stopped, mixing them with alcohol or other drugs, taking a medication that was not prescribed for you, or using similar prescriptions from more than one doctor.



Once addicted, a person usually feels desperate because the withdrawal symptoms can be terrible. He might go "doctor shopping" (going to several trusting doctors to obtain similar prescriptions), search for sources on the Internet, go to unscrupulous "pill mills" or stoop to buying on the street illegally.



Why are most prescription painkillers so addictive?

To better understand the power of painkillers, let's compare opiates and opioids . Opiates are extractions from opium poppy plants. They include morphine and codeine. And morphine is frequently processed chemically to produce—guess what— heroin for the illegal drug trade.



The painkillers are opioids that are synthetic or semi-synthetic but chemically similar to opiates. The addictive properties of the painkillers are similar to heroin and morphine!



Opioids give some people a mild emotional uplift. This too can present a temptation to abuse the prescription, especially for someone who is depressed.



If these facts were more widely understood, there would be more healthy fear and respect for the potential risks involved in taking narcotic painkillers.



Youth addiction and adult addiction

Youth painkiller abuse often starts with young people "experimenting" by taking a "leftover" medication that was prescribed for someone else like a family member. Motivations include curiosity, thrill-seeking or an urge to relieve anxieties.



When adults (of any age) become addicted, it generally is because they have abused their own prescriptions. When there is drug abuse, addiction can occur within only a few weeks.



The good news is that when a patient takes an opioid painkiller for only as long as there is severe pain, strictly follows the prescription and is closely monitored by one doctor, it is rare that he will become addicted.



The main point of this message is this: Please don't let yourself become addicted to anything. Prevention is a thousand times easier than any cure! Stay alert for any early-warning signs of addiction!

If you suspect that you or a loved one is addicted, begin by educating yourself. If you are addicted, please, please seek help. People very seldom overcome an addiction on their own.



If a loved one or friend is addicted, please don't put him on a guilt trip. Address it like any other medical problem. He's already feeling terribly ashamed and fearful. What he needs from you is respect, compassion and encouragement as well as your gentle guidance.



If an addicted person will also rely on God for comfort, guidance, motivation and strength, he has a huge advantage! Trying to conquer an addiction may seem like an impossible task. But Jesus Christ said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God" (Luke 18:27And he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.

Christianity Isn't for Wimps

Most people today think being a Christian is easy, but the surprising truth is, the real Christianity of the Bible is challenging and difficult. Do you have the courage and conviction to be a real Christian?



The little tract said it was easy. All I had to do to become a Christian was accept Jesus. I didn't have to do anything else. According to the little booklet, Jesus did everything for me when He died for my sins and there was nothing that I had to do in return. The text said that if I accepted Him into my life, good things would happen to me now and in the future, I was guaranteed eternal life. Concluding, it asked, "Won't you accept Jesus into your heart right now?"



Perhaps you've read or heard the same message. It's readily available through friends, many churches, restaurant counters, bus stations and just about anywhere else one could imagine. But is being a Christian that easy? Is Christianity just accepting and celebrating what Christ did for us? Is nothing expected of us in return?



As a young person, how can you determine what God wants you to do? In this article we're going to see what the Bible itself says about Christianity. I hope you have the courage to read what it says and follow its advice.



Let's begin with a thought-provoking question. If Christianity is so easy, why aren't more people becoming Christians? After all, who in his or her right mind would turn down free benefits like winning the lottery, getting a tax refund or, in the case of Christianity, living forever? Could it be that some suspect there is something wrong with the message? Let's begin with a quick survey of the state of Christianity in general.



Survey of Christianity

The Christian Science Monitor recently reported that between 1990 and 2000, "the overall increase in religious affiliation did not keep pace with the rate of US population growth" (8.8 percent compared to 13.2 percent) and "the proportion who classified themselves as Christian dropped from 86 percent to 77 percent" ("Charting America's Religious Landscape," Jane Lampman, Oct. 10, 2002, http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/1010/p12s01-lire.html ). In Europe, the trend to abandon Christianity is even more pronounced. Many churches sit empty, lacking people to fill them.



While immigration likely skews the above noted percentages in the United States, one additional fact did arise in the article: "Socially conservative denominations grew faster between 1990 and 2000 than others." In other words, the greatest appeal came from the more challenging religions.



Along similar lines, many have wondered why more women than men attend church. In 1999 Leon J. Podles wrote a provocative book titled The Church Impotent: The Feminization of Christianity suggesting reasons why men were less attracted to religion than women. His work reflected a desire to understand why Christianity had lost its appeal to men.



Putting today's trends into historical perspective, we have to ask why Christianity grew so rapidly in the early centuries, even in the face of intense persecution, and why it seems to be floundering today—especially when so many parts of the world have religious freedom.



The key: Jesus' teaching

Looking for an accurate explanation of the nature of Christianity, our best resource is Jesus Himself. In His famous Sermon on the Mount, considered to be the fundamental overview of Christianity and how we should conduct ourselves, Jesus said, "Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it" (Matthew 7:13-14 [13] Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:

[14] Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Later in this same chapter, Jesus said, "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, 'Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?' And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness! '" (verses 21-23).



These scriptures explain that being a Christian will be " difficult "--that doing God's will and obeying God's law are also prerequisites for entering the Kingdom; it would not be solely acceptance and celebration.



Now, please don't misunderstand. Accepting and celebrating what Jesus did for us is important. The Bible teaches us that we must be baptized and it commands observance of God's Holy Days—annual celebrations of God's plan to reconcile humanity to Himself (Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.



See All...; Leviticus 23). But there is far more to Christianity than just accepting and celebrating Christ.



Paul's writings

To add to our understanding of the challenge of being a Christian, let's consider some of the apostle Paul's writings. In Romans 7 Paul commented on the struggle he was having with sin. Here he wrote: "For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin" (verses 22-25).



Later, Paul likened his effort to receive eternal life to the training of a runner. Using this analogy, Paul wrote, "... I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified." (2 Corinthians 9:27



See All...). In 2 Corinthians 10:3-4 [3] For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:

[4] (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)





See All..., Paul described the efforts of Christians to honor God as spiritual warfare .



In these passages, Paul acknowledged that he was struggling to do what he should and he realized that he needed Christ's help to live as God intended. With this realization, he declared, "I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me" (Galatians 2:20I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.



See All...). He gave his own life to God to be used for God's honor and purpose.



Understanding works

There is one important caution in understanding the effort God expects of those who seek Him. Struggling to live a Christ-like life does not earn us salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9 [8] For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

[9] Not of works, lest any man should boast.





See All... clearly explains, "For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God , not of works, lest anyone should boast." No amount of good works or effort on our part will ever earn us eternal life. The opportunity to live forever is a gift bestowed upon us by God through His great mercy.



The fact that eternal life is a gift, however, does not negate God's expectations of us. As the passage in Ephesians 2 continues, "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works , which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them" (verse 10). The struggles we have to do good when others around us are doing evil are part of God's plan for perfecting His people. We build righteous character when we struggle against our human nature and the urge to retaliate against others who mistreat us. It is in this crucible of struggle that God sees who we are and what we are becoming.



In God's desire to see us develop into mature, principled Christians for His Kingdom, He realizes that we need challenges along the way. Just as weightlifters build muscle by actually lifting weights, we build spiritual character through challenge—not by watching someone else practice Christianity.



Character is crucial

We build righteous spiritual character by resisting temptation. When others cheat on exams or in the preparation of papers, it takes effort by people striving to be Christians not to do the same. When others choose to have sexual relations prior to marriage, it takes courage and character to obey God and resist the desire to do likewise. When others break the Sabbath or skip church services, it takes character to do what God commands.



When young people see hypocrisy in the church or in other adults, it takes character to obey God anyway. And then there is peer pressure. Resisting it is hard, too.



Building righteous character through resistance to sin is so precious in God's sight that character is going to be the basis for our reward in God's Kingdom. As Jesus explains in Revelation 22:12And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be.



See All..., "I am coming quickly, and My reward is with Me, to give to every one according to his work." Simply stated, eternal life is a gift, but we are rewarded according to our works.



Given the challenge of being a Christian, some may feel discouraged--as though this struggle is more than they can bear. Yet under these circumstances, God promises to help. As Paul said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13). Our human effort coupled with God's help makes it possible for us to be positive examples to those around us. This is precisely what Jesus had in mind when He said that we are to be lights to this world (Matthew 5:14-16 [14] Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

[15] Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

[16] Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Instead, those of us who desire to be Christians must be actively involved in obeying God and doing His work.
