Ahmadinejad's Apocalypse

article by Scott Ashley

How do you negotiate with people whose desire is to start a global war so that their messiah will come to save them and win the war for them?

Because so many people today fail to take religion seriously, it's hard for them to understand those who do. A classic example is Iran, where the risks couldn't be higher since nuclear weapons are at stake.

Shiite Muslims—the overwhelming majority in Iran—believe that following Muhammad's death, leadership of the Muslim world was to be passed down through his descendants. Each successor was known as an imam —Arabic for "leader." The 12th of these imams was born in A.D. 868 or 869 and disappeared without a trace about five years later. But that's far from the end of the story.

A branch of Shiite Muslims believe that this 12th imam survived and has been in hiding ever since, waiting until the time is right to emerge and lead Islam again. These believers are commonly called "Twelvers" because of their belief in the imminent reappearance of this 12th imam in a time of global chaos.

Many Muslims also believe in the coming of a figure they call al-Mahdi, meaning "the [divinely] guided one," who will lead Islam to its rightful place as the one true religion in the world. Common among Twelvers is belief that the 12th imam and the Mahdi are one and the same and that they have a religious duty to initiate the period of world chaos from which the 12th imam/Mahdi will emerge. They also believe that Jesus Christ will return alongside the 12th imam/Mahdi—but as a Muslim who will help convert the world to Islam.

What should be profoundly disturbing to Western leaders is that Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei are fervent adherent of Twelver beliefs. Sound too far out to believe? Notice these concluding remarks from Ahmadinejad's address to the United Nations on Sept. 22, 2011—less than a year ago:

"A [bright] future . . . will be built when humanity initiates to tread the path of the divine prophets and the righteous under the leadership of Imam al-Mahdi, the Ultimate Savior of mankind . . . He will come alongside with Jesus Christ to lead the freedom and justice lovers to eradicate tyranny and discrimination, and promote knowledge, peace, justice, freedom and love across the world."

Of course, he fails to mention that this period of "peace, justice, freedom and love" will be due, he believes, to the establishment of Islam as the dominant religion by "Imam al-Mahdi" in accordance with the Koran's instruction (Suras 2:193; 61:9) after a period of worldwide turmoil that his devotees are expected to initiate.

So while Western governments pursue endless rounds of fruitless negotiations trying to convince the Iranians to abandon pursuit of nuclear weapons, Iran's leaders play for time until the moment is right to deal with what they call "the Great Satan" (the United States) and "the little Satans" (Israel and Britain) and to initiate the period of global chaos they're sure is coming. How do you negotiate with people whose desire is to start a global nuclear war so that their messiah will come to save them and win the war for them?

While this kind of news is alarming and even terrifying, we can be comforted that Jesus Christ will return— and in a very powerful way. He will set this world aright and bring world peace—just us your Bible promises. He will redeem this world from the clutches of Satan and the deceits of false religion, including Islam. And, contrary to Islamic belief, Christ will not return with the 12th imam.

What's God Got To Do With It?

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632.

by Darris McNeely
Unemployment is over 9%. Gas is over $4 and the value of our homes dropped again. No wonder people are concerned about their future and the future of their children. Some are even getting angry. How will we cope?

A recent Newsweek/Daily Beast poll shows a majority of Americans surveyed are losing their optimism that the economy will soon turn around. The report says, "three-quarters of our respondents think the country is on the wrong track. A majority say the anxiety wrought by this recession has caused relationship problems and sleep deficiency. Two-thirds even report being angry at God."

People blame the wealthy, government, big corporations and President Obama for the stagnant economy. These are the usual suspects in a bad economy. With an election year approaching we will see the president take more heat for the problem. If the economic figures do not improve Obama could see himself as a one term leader. No president in modern memory has won a second term with unemployment this high. Jimmy Carter lost the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan largely because Americans felt they were worse off financially because of his leadership.

I have to go back to that period thirty years ago to remember a time that was as bad or worse than what we are currently experiencing. America did pull out of that nose dive and go on to experience a period of unprecedented wealth. It is that period that came to a crash three years ago with the near collapse of the financial and housing markets and the subsequent impact on the world economy.

Most Americans under the age of forty do not remember a period of crisis like we now have. They lack a perspective to view today's problems. I see this in conversations with young adults who have real concerns about their future. Many truly understand the future is in their hands–they cannot rely on the government. Hence the anger of many.

What I find most disturbing is the dwindling confidence among many that we can work our way out of this mess, stabilize and experience further growth. When people lose confidence in themselves or their institutions you have a systemic problem that does not go away overnight. Confidence is another word for faith and faith is a spiritual concept rooted firmly in God. Blame God or get angry at Him and you make a big mistake. God is not responsible for America's economic problems. We are responsible as nation and until we accept the duty to change our ways and get back to a fiscal, moral and spiritual path that works we will not see nor come to the solution.

Through the prophet Ezekiel God challenges today's ill-placed anger toward Him. 'Yet you say, 'The way of the Lord is not fair." Hear now, O house of Israel, is it not My way which is fair, and your ways which are not fair? When a righteous man turns away from his righteousness, commits iniquity, and dies in it, it is because of the iniquity which he has done that he dies". (Ezekiel 18:25-26 [25] Yet ye say, The way of the LORD is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal?

[26] When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die.

See All...)

I make no predictions about how long or how bad this current economic problem will last. But don't blame God and don't lose faith and confidence. Follow the sound fiscal laws laid down in the Bible when it comes to your personal finances. Get out of debt and stay out of debt. Live within your income. Honor God with your money by giving to Him what He claims is His, a tithe of what you earn. (Proverbs 3:9Honour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase:

See All...)

Our paper money has always carried the inscription, "In God we trust". Don't lose your trust in Him. God is our sure source of confidence.

Israel: Growing Danger on Every Side

article by Melvin Rhodes

One of the smallest democracies in the world faces increased hostility from its neighbors—and even from its democratic friends in the West.

Source: iStockphoto"No democracy in the world today lies under a darker shadow of existential dread than Israel. And the events of the past month ought to demonstrate that Israel's dread is not of shadows only."

These words are from the final paragraph of a Wall Street Journal column by the former editor of The Jerusalem Post, Bret Stephens ("Israel's Predicament," Sept. 13, 2011).

Mr. Stephens frequently writes on the Middle East. He began this particular article with a catalog of setbacks that had befallen the Jewish nation in just one month's time:

"On Aug. 18, eight Israelis were killed in a sophisticated cross-border ambush near the frontier with Egypt.

"From Aug. 18-24, some 200 large-caliber, factory-made rockets and mortars were fired at Israel from Gaza.

"On Sept. 1, the head of Iran's atomic energy agency announced that it was moving the bulk of its enrichment facilities to a heavily fortified site near the city of Qom.

"On Sept. 2, the United Nations released a report on the May 2010 Turkish flotilla incident, which defended Israel's right to enforce a naval blockade on Gaza and noted that Israeli commandos faced 'organized and violent resistance.' The Turkish government responded by yanking its ambassador from Tel Aviv and expelling Israel's from Ankara.

"On Sept. 4, the U.S. made a final appeal to the Palestinian Authority to drop its bid to seek statehood recognition at the U.N., a bid that sends to the rubbish bin decades of international agreements that a Palestinian state can be established only on the basis of negotiations. The PA rebuffed the American entreaties.

"On Sept. 8, Turkey's prime minister announced that Turkish warships would escort future Gaza-bound flotillas.

"On Sept. 9, thousands of hooligans stormed and nearly sacked the Israeli embassy in Cairo. Israel evacuated nearly its entire diplomatic mission from Egypt the following morning."

The day before Stephens' article was printed, Ynetnews reported that King Abdullah of Jordan had described Jordan and the Palestinians as now being more powerful than Israel.

A new state "free of Jews"

As the Palestinian Authority pushed forward with plans to bring its statehood bid to the United Nations, on Sept. 15 Arutz Sheva reported comments by "the Palestinian Authority representative delegation's United Nations observer, who said that the Arab state the PA plans to declare in Judea, Samaria and Jerusalem [biblical names for the territories of the West Bank] will be 'free of Jews.'"

It went on to note that "in June, [PA leader Mahmoud] Abbas himself made a similar statement. Telling reporters that he would under no conditions recognize Israel as a Jewish state, Abbas said that he would agree to an international force to ensure enforcement of a peace agreement between Israel and the PA state to prevent terrorism. But, he said, 'I will not agree to allowing Jews to participate in this force, and I will not agree to allow even one Israeli to live among us on Palestinian land'" (emphasis added throughout).

The attempt to get United Nations recognition of an independent Palestinian state is not only a breach of previous Israel-PA agreements, but also a clear provocation that can only raise tensions between Israel and its neighbors.

Understandably, Israeli historian Benny Morris raised the question: "Is Israel Over?" ( Newsweek, Sept. 11, 2011). He stated: "Israel is under assault . . . The Palestinian Authority plans to unilaterally declare statehood and go to the United Nations for recognition. This is a rejection of all efforts for a peaceful compromise. In its wake will come waves of Palestinian violence.

"And yet this is just the latest manifestation of an embattled Israel that is being threatened from the outside—by Muslim Arab states and societies, Egyptians storming the Israeli Embassy, a nuclear-arming Iran (with its local sidekicks, Hamas in the Gaza Strip, Hizbullah in Lebanon), and a besieged President Bashar al-Assad in Syria—and from the inside by domestic upheaval that led to the largest mass protests in the country's history."

Morris then continued to highlight Israel's internal divisions, after which he wrote: "Now there looms the even greater threat of resurgent Islam, not just within Israel's borders or the Palestinian territories, but across the region, where it is spreading like a brushfire."

The Middle East—the epicenter of Bible prophecy

Bible students have long known that the Middle East is the epicenter of biblical prophecy and history. After bringing the Israelite slaves out of Egypt, God gave to them the Promised Land—sometimes called the Holy Land. It was here that the subsequent history of Israel was written.

It was here, too, that Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, walked and preached the gospel of the coming Kingdom of God. It was also in this area that, long before, the tribes of Israel grew, fought, flourished, then divided into the separate kingdoms of Israel and Judah after the death of King Solomon.

The people of Israel and then of Judah (the Jews) were taken into captivity. The 10 tribes of the northern kingdom of Israel were taken to Assyria in the eighth century B.C. Not much more than a century later, the southern kingdom of Judah was conquered, and the Jews were removed to Babylon. Some of them returned several decades later. The "lost" 10 tribes of Israel dispersed to other parts of the world. (You can read about this in our free booklet The United States and Britain in Bible Prophecy . )

The Jews suffered another dispersion centuries later, after two revolts against the Roman Empire. These were crushed, and for almost 2,000 years those of the Jewish diaspora lived scattered in Europe and the Middle East. In the 19th and 20th century tens of thousands started returning to their ancestral homeland.

Eventually, in 1948, an independent Jewish nation was proclaimed. Invaded by four Arab armies on the day after it declared independence, Israel managed to hang on and defeat them and has continued ever since.

A tough road to survival

Surrounded by hostile nations, Israel remains the only real representative democracy in the Middle East. Its ideals are very similar to those of other Western democracies. As in other representative democracies, Israel respects the rights of religious and ethnic minorities—something that cannot be said for Israel's neighbors. Israel has 1.2 million Arab citizens, most of whom are Muslim.

At first, Israel received a great deal of support and sympathy from much of the world. Six million Jews had been killed in the Holocaust of World War II. As a free society that easily fit into the Western world, it identified with Western nations.

But the sympathy soon ended. In June 1967 Israel was victorious in the Six-Day War against Egypt, Jordan, Syria and other Arab armies. Defeating the armies of its three larger neighbors, Israel captured territory from all three.

In October 1973 Egyptian and Syrian armies launched a devastating surprise attack on Israel, but again Israel was victorious. Following a peace treaty with Egypt in 1979, Israel withdrew from the conquered Egyptian territories, including the whole of the Sinai Peninsula. In 2005 it withdrew from the formerly Egyptian-controlled Gaza Strip.

Today Israel still holds on to portions of the West Bank (formerly part of Jordan) for security reasons. Israel also retains control of the Golan Heights (formerly part of Syria), also for security reasons.

In an anti-colonial age, this arrangement has been unacceptable to much of the rest of the world, including Western nations that have never accepted the new arrangement and have persistently pressured Israel to give up those territories it still holds. Israel maintains that it cannot go back to its indefensible pre-1967 borders, which would leave the country less than 10 miles wide in some places.

The Israelis have made a number of attempts to reach out to Palestinian Authority leaders, offering a peaceful resolution which would give them their own independent nation.

Talks between the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and the former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, hosted by U.S. President Bill Clinton in 2000, seemed close to success, with Barak offering Arafat all of the Gaza Strip and more than 90 percent of the West Bank, but Arafat balked. As Israel's longtime late Foreign Minister Abba Eban once said, "The Arabs never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity!"

So why now suddenly is Israel more threatened?

From "Arab Spring" to Israeli Winter

What has changed for Israel in recent days is the much-heralded "Arab Spring," so enthusiastically received in the West.

The supposed democratization of Arab countries has coincided with the fall of several Arab dictators. One of these, Hosni Mubarak of Egypt, was backed by the United States for 30 years, following the 1979 peace treaty between Israel and Egypt that was sponsored by Washington.

His fall has had a serious impact on Israel's security. While the Egyptian president maintained a "cold peace" with Israel, the majority of Egyptians do not feel the same way. They are incensed with Israel's alleged mistreatment of the Palestinians.

An additional factor is the increased influence of Islamic extremists in the country since the fall of Mubarak—such as the Muslim Brotherhood, which has already threatened to abrogate the Egypt-Israel peace treaty after new elections later this year.

Jordan's King Abdullah observed that the Arab Spring has made things worse for Israel. According to one news report: "The king described a recent conversation he held in the US with 'one of the Israeli intellectuals' who commented on events in the Arab world, arguing that they were good for Israel. 'I replied and said that it was the opposite and that Israel's situation today is more difficult than ever before'" (Ynetnews, Sept. 12, 2011).

A dangerous new world

Islamic extremism continues to threaten Israel in other ways.

Following the fall of the pro-Western Shah of Iran in 1979, the radical Islamist Iranian republic has taken a very anti-Israel line.

In Gaza, Iran has supported Hamas, a terror group committed to Israel's destruction (and which, for that very reason, opposes the creation of a Palestinian state out of present Palestinian territories on the grounds that such a state would be forced at some point to agree to Israel's existence). In Lebanon to Israel's north, it supports another terror group, Hezbollah, which started another war against Israel in 2006 and has since rearmed with thousands of rockets and missiles pointed at Israel.

Moreover, Iran's leadership is set on developing nuclear weapons and a delivery system that will enable Iran to hit U.S. military targets in the area as well as the nation of Israel. Israel is so small it wouldn't take more than two or three well-placed nuclear warheads to wipe the country off the face of the earth.

This is part of why the Bible mentions Israel (actually inhabited by the descendants of the biblical kingdom of Judah, known as Jews) so prominently in end-time prophecy.

The prophet Zechariah, speaking for God about events leading up to the return of the Messiah, tells us: "Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it" (Zechariah 12:2-3 [2] Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of trembling unto all the people round about, when they shall be in the siege both against Judah and against Jerusalem.

[3] And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.

See All...).

This is certainly true today. Jerusalem, the city of peace, is often the place where hopes for peace go to die.

Highlighting the fact that Jerusalem is at the very center of so much conflict, Jesus Christ warned, "But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation is near" (Luke 21:20And when ye shall see Jerusalem compassed with armies, then know that the desolation thereof is nigh.

See All...).

Centuries earlier God inspired Zechariah to write: "For I will gather all the nations to battle against Jerusalem" (Zechariah 14:2For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

See All...).

Lest people think this is referring to an event in ancient history, Zechariah clearly showed the timing to be at the return of Christ. "Then the Lord will go forth and fight against those nations, as He fights in the day of battle. And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which faces Jerusalem on the east. And the Mount of Olives shall be split in two, from east to west, making a very large valley" (verses 3-4).

While Jesus stood on the Mount of Olives 2,000 years ago, the mountain certainly did not split in two. And He did not battle nations at that time. This is still in the future, to be fulfilled at Christ's return.

Events in the Middle East will be central to the final fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

These passages and others also show us that, despite the threats against Israel at this time, the Jewish nation will still exist right up until the time of the end. In fact, Jewish authorities will exercise control in Jerusalem until 1,260 days before Christ's return.

Referring to a future time when armies come against Jerusalem, the book of Revelation tells us that "they will tread the holy city underfoot for forty-two months. And I will give power to my two witnesses, and they will prophecy one thousand two hundred and sixty days" (Revelation 11:2-3 [2] But the court which is without the temple leave out, and measure it not; for it is given unto the Gentiles: and the holy city shall they tread under foot forty and two months.

[3] And I will give power unto my two witnesses, and they shall prophesy a thousand two hundred and threescore days, clothed in sackcloth.

See All...).

The following verses show that these two witnesses, God's prophets preaching a final warning message to this world, will be killed by those hostile to them. And then, a few days later at Jesus Christ's return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords, they will be resurrected to life again.

Israel's very existence a miracle

The very existence of modern Israel is a miracle in itself. With the Jews dispersed by the Romans in the first and second centuries, the Holy Land was ruled by others for centuries. It wasn't until modern times that the idea of an independent Jewish nation gained ground.

In 1917 the famous Balfour Declaration, named for the British foreign secretary at the time, pledged Britain, then the dominant power in the world, to the establishment of a Jewish homeland. Following the Nazi Holocaust, a vote at the newly formed United Nations turned the former British Mandate of Palestine into the nation of Israel. Prior to that, only serious students of the Bible would have known that a Jewish nation had to exist near the end of man's rule of this world.

But hostility to it has been a problem from day one, when neighboring Arab armies tried to crush it, at a time when the Jewish population was only half a million. The Jews won—as they have against every major threat in the last 63 years.

The time is coming when Jerusalem will be surrounded by gentile armies and Israel will again be engulfed by war. But that time will also culminate in the end-time events that lead directly to the return of Jesus Christ and the establishment of the Kingdom of God.

Watch Jerusalem. Watch Israel. "Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming" (Matthew 24:42Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

See All...). Watching events in the Middle East directs our attention to the soon-coming return of Jesus Christ to the earth!

America's Relationship With God

1 comments Submitted July 20, 2011

According to many polls, well over fifty percent of Americans believe that their country is headed in the wrong direction. It is not hard to see why. The United States has not bounced back from its most severe economic slump since the Great Depression.

Unemployment remains stubbornly high, and the national debt continues to skyrocket. President Obama and Congress must act by August 2 to raise America's national debt ceiling, or the country will have to renege on some of its financial obligations for the first time in history, due to its inability to borrow any more money. This could endanger the fragile economic recovery.

Why is America suffering so many national woes? Could it be due to our relationship with God and our view of His Holy Word? America claims to be a Christian nation, but labeling ourselves as such does not make it true. The Founding Fathers who established the nation were men who respected the Bible; almost all of them professed Christianity. They at times considered the superintending providence of God when they wrote the foundational laws that comprise the basis of the American Constitution.

There is inscribed upon the eastern pediment of the building housing the United States Supreme Court a row of the world's law givers. Included among these figures is a characterization of Moses with two tablets in his hands. The Ten Commandments were written upon two tables of stone.

There are Bible verses etched in stone all over the Federal Buildings and Monuments in Washington, D.C.

America needs to practice what it displays so prominently in its capital. This issue of The Good News will provide for you a sketch of America's biblical foundation during the nation's formative years. You will also read of America's departure from some of the eternal foundational principles of the Bible and what the future holds if the nation does not reverse its downward spiritual trend.

If America does not repent, you—our readers—can. You will be blessed by God if you do.

Right, Wrong and Sonia Sotomayor

A commentary by Jeremy Lallier

Posted August 5, 2009

What counts with God is not the ability to feel for those who have done wrong. What counts before God is a willingness to do what is right as defined by His perfect law.

When it comes to deciding what's right and wrong, mankind has maintained a less-than-impressive track record.

I wrote this commentary during the U.S. Senate confirmation hearings for Sonia Sotomayor. As expected, last night the Senate approved her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court where she will function as one of nine judges with the collective ability to establish U.S. judicial precedent—in other words, to decide what counts as right and what counts as wrong.

Impartiality or empathy?

The confirmation process highlighted different opinions about what standards should be used to judge a judge. A recent Washington Post article quoted Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as saying that judge Sotomayor "has repeatedly stated that there is no objectivity or neutrality in judging" and "has dismissed judicial impartiality as an 'aspiration' that cannot be met even in most cases."

The same article quotes President Barack Obama as saying that the issues that come before the Supreme Court are matters of "life and death. And we need somebody who's got...the empathy to recognize what it's like to be a young, teenaged mom; the empathy to understand what it's like to be poor or African American or gay or disabled or old. And that's the criteria by which I'm going to be selecting my judges."

Both arguments deserve consideration. Impartiality and empathy are both good traits. But can either be achieved or yield true justice in human hands? The outcome of a judge integrating empathy in his or her rulings could easily be a skewed interpretation of the law that favors whichever party has the sorriest-sounding story rather than whichever party is in the right according to hard-and-fast laws.

On the other hand, even if a judge could be truly impartial, couldn't the human laws themselves be flawed?

The divine law and Judge

The Bible's standard of justice is much higher.

Jesus Christ can perfectly "sympathize with our weaknesses" (Hebrews 4:15For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.

See All...), and upon true repentance is more than willing to remove the eternal death penalty that accompanies sin.

But the Bible also makes it clear that "God shows no partiality. But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him" (Acts 10:34-35 [34] Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

[35] But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

See All...).

What counts with God is not the ability to feel for those who have done wrong. What is wrong according to God's standards will always be wrong, regardless of age, race or gender—these and other qualifiers will never justify any action that conflicts with God's law, because "God shows personal favoritism to no man" (Galatians 2:6But of these who seemed to be somewhat, (whatsoever they were, it maketh no matter to me: God accepteth no man's person:) for they who seemed to be somewhat in conference added nothing to me:

See All...).

What counts before God is a willingness to do what is right as defined by His perfect law. When we break that law, the sacrifice of Christ allows for our forgiveness and then our continued rededication to keeping it—but having a good-sounding "excuse" for breaking the law in the first place never justifies us.

Two ways of living

In short, for a nation or as an individual, there are two ways we can choose to follow:

•The "way that seems right to a man" (Proverbs 14:12There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

See All...).

•"The perfect law of liberty" (James 1:25But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

See All...).

Each verse concludes with the end result of its respective path. A person who "looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it…will be blessed in what he does," while "the way that seems right to a man" definitively and without exception ends in "the way of death."

Which path will you take? VT

Atheism is Dead - God

Atheism is Dead - God

article by Randy Stiver

What is the attraction of atheism, and why has is become so evangelistic? Are we missing something, or is the atheist philosophy missing something?

Friedrich Nietzsche

Source: WikimediaIs God Dead?" So asked the cover of Time magazine on April 8, 1966, in the midst of the sexual and drug revolution. The headline echoed the atheistic sentiments of the 19th-century German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche (pronounced NEE-che ).

Nietzsche wasn't the first person to reject God's existence, but he was one of the more famous to do so in the late 1800s. In his book The Gay Science he wrote, "God is dead," and gave his own (obviously fictitious) account of "God's murder." From 1859 Charles Darwin's theory of evolution attracted many philosophers and scientists. It gave them a doctrine—actually an atheistic religion—to replace any belief in God as the Creator of all things. Nietzsche's "God is dead" philosophy helped popularize the implications of the theory of evolution.

Especially in America—ironically often described as the most religious nation in the world—a battle continues between those who believe in God and the atheistic-evolutionary forces of popular culture, science and higher education. The intimidation factor of higher education has ensured that you are taught the "theory" of evolution in school as unarguable fact. (To learn the real facts of the matter, order our free Bible study aid booklets Life's Ultimate Question: Does God Exist? and Creation or Evolution: Does It Matter What You Believe? )

God most assuredly is not dead. The T-shirt of a friend of mine bore a clever message in this regard. The first line said, "God is dead. —Nietzsche." The second line said, "Nietzsche is dead. —God." Truth is in the second line. But here's a greater truth: Atheism is dead too.

Its proponents don't know that yet, but as a philosophy—actually a godless religion with evolution as its handmaiden doctrine—atheism is truly dead. However, the atheist movement presently thinks it has the upper hand. Militant atheism or atheist activism is regularly in the headlines during these early years of the 21st century. Atheism websites and publications abound. Beginning about 2009, evangelistic atheism advertisements have been plastered on buses in many European and American cities.

Nevertheless, though popular for the moment, atheism's demise is coming—with no possibility of resurrection.

Why is atheism dead?

For any readers who've embraced atheism, this is offered as encouragement to reconsider that philosophy.

Honestly, atheism died for a lack of truth and logic. It lacks truth because, first, God is not dead and, second, the godless philosophy depended on unprovable evolution to explain life. Being unprovable, evolution remains a theory—and not a good one. A viable theory is supposed to fit the facts available—yet evolution does not even come close.

Atheism lacks logic because it underestimates the complexity of life, doesn't do math well—especially fractal geometry—and it won't ask itself the really hard question. (Fractal geometry, originally called Chaos Theory, is a relatively recent branch of mathematics that discovered that the patterns of coastlines, leaves, trees, hilly landscapes and virtually anything in nature are not random but mathematically calculable—and evidence of a supreme Designer!)

What is the atheist movement trying to do?

What have most great religions attempted throughout history? Answer: dominate . Remember, atheism is essentially a nontheistic religion, and human nature is remarkably predictable.

This question was clearly summarized in a December 2011 blog titled "What Are the Goals of the Atheist Movement?" by leading atheist activist Greta Christina. In essence, the first goal as she expressed it is to "see atheists fully accepted into society, and to have atheism accepted as legitimate." One could argue that this goal seems to have long been met in most halls of academia. The other goal is more ominous: "a world where there's no religion"—no religion except atheism , of course.

Why does atheism hate traditional religion so much?

A recurring atheistic argument against traditional religion is that all the world's wars (and other societal evils) have been caused by religion. Sadly, this is true to a significant degree. But we must realize that these are consequences of false religion—not merely believing in God. Even much that has been passed off as Christianity is not the true Christian religion of the Bible. Moreover, we should ask: Has atheism ever been guilty of wars, killing and destruction?

Dr. Rudolph Rummel of the University of Hawaii, in his book Death by Government , chronicled how many of their own people various governments in history have killed (not including battle deaths or capital punishment for crimes). The worst of the worst, in terms of sheer numbers, was the communist Soviet Union, which murdered nearly 62 million Soviet subjects during its 70-year history. The next most deadly was the communist Chinese government launched by Mao Tse-Tung, with 35 million killed. In third place was Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany, which exterminated 21 million. It should be realized that Friedrich Nietzsche's godless philosophy infused Nazi thinking.

But the worst murderer of its own people by percentage was the Cambodian communist regime of Pol Pot, which during the late 1970s slaughtered one third of the country's 6 million people.

Belief in God didn't cause these atrocities. They were perpetrated by fundamentally atheistic regimes. So atheism is by no means a panacea.

Why doesn't atheism ask the hard question?

Put any discussion of the divine, spiritual law on hold. Scientists—including atheistic ones—believe in, constantly rely on, and use the laws of physics (including mathematics and all the natural laws of science) to carry out their work. The hard question: Where did the laws of physics come from, and why do they always work?

Atheism doesn't want to answer this question, yet science willingly assumes the certainty of these physical laws. Theoretical physicists have in recent years developed the matrix or M-Theory—an extension of string theory—to explain the universe. (You'll have to google it, as there's no room to address it here.) But even that has at its basis certain fixed laws of physics. Where did those laws come from?

When pushed for an origin of the laws of science, the atheistic-evolutionary answer essentially is that those laws have just always been there . Thus logic fails the atheist movement by the refusal to address origins.

There is an answer, though. Let's move from the seemingly unknown (origin of the laws of physics) to the known (origin of societal laws). Where do laws governing society come from? That's easy. They are made by legislators and sustained, albeit imperfectly, by judicial branches of governments. Societal laws don't exist by happenstance, and neither do the laws of science—they are specifically made and dynamically sustained! Bottom line: Laws—spiritual or physical—demand a Lawgiver who is also a law Sustainer. And that would be God .

The future of atheism

God is on His throne, and Jesus Christ will soon return to the earth to establish the Kingdom of God. However, there is an evil spirit being—Satan the devil—who wants human beings to reject belief in God, and as one of his many deceptions he has spawned atheism (compare John 8:44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

See All...; 2 Corinthians 4:4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

See All...; Revelation 12:9And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

See All...).

On the horizon before Christ's second coming is the worst world war in history (see our free Bible study aid booklet Are We Living in the Time of the End? ). And this war will arise from conflicts between world religions—false religions, not the true religion of the Bible. As the battle lines are drawn, the resulting fervor will draw atheists and believers alike to one worship system or another—but, again, not the worship of the true God as revealed in the Bible. Atheism as we know it today will be virtually extinguished in those troubled times.

And as the divine plan in Scripture unfolds, all will come to believe in God. The question then will be whether they choose to believe what God says . Either way, the conclusion is the same: Atheism is dead. —God.

Saddam, Hitler, and Stalin: Beyond Satan's Slaves

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632.

A commentary by Jerold Aust

People today blithely stumble along in their lives, ignorant of the fact that there is a "god of this world", Satan the devil, who is in control behind the scenes and behind much of what happens on earth. Although most human beings either ignore or deny this truth, God doesn’t. He has a plan to resolve this greatest of problems...

"Until the myth dies, people are going to show unnatural fear of his (Saddam) return," advised Lieutenant Colonel Steve Russell ( Time , 7/23/03), noting why some Iraqis seem nervous about Saddam's ultimate demise.

They know Saddam is wily as a coyote and unconscionably merciless. Some Iraqis have personally experienced the maiming and murder of close relatives by Saddam, his sons, and his henchman.

"Time to find Saddam," said a top Republican operative last week. "We get nothing if we do nothing," says Russell. "It's just a matter of waiting for Murphy's Law to kick in," says another official. "He needs money and trusted friends to move around and we're scooping up both." For instance, in the end of June, the brigade intercepted Saddam's nephew who just happened to be carrying $800,000 in a briefcase.

Saddam and a few trusted supporters are like ghosts, seldom staying longer than a few hours in any one house. The Saddam myth remains until this poster boy for Satan is caught, dead or alive!

Where do such obscene, heartless human butchers come from, and when will such tyrannies end? The Bible provides the answer to both questions. Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin rate at the top of a historical list of more recent cruel and heartless tyrants. So many books have been written about Hitler and Stalin, so much verifiable historical data has been recorded for posterity, that it's a foregone conclusion they rank at the top of the list of despicable demagogues. Both are responsible for the deaths of millions of people. Now Saddam has joined their infamous ranks.

Though the list of sickening, revolting tyrants is long, only one being is behind them all: Satan the devil.

"You're trying to tell me that the devil made them do it?," you might ask. Not entirely. They unwittingly cooperated with the god of this world in joining the ranks of the most heartless humans on earth. Understand this: God will not allow Satan the devil to directly take human lives (see Job 1:12And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath is in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

See All...; 2:6). But Satan can influence human beings to do his dirty work, and he does (Job 1:17While he was yet speaking, there came also another, and said, The Chaldeans made out three bands, and fell upon the camels, and have carried them away, yea, and slain the servants with the edge of the sword; and I only am escaped alone to tell thee.

See All...).

Jesus Christ, countering the ignorant accusations of self-righteous Pharisees, placed the blame squarely on Satan's head: "You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it" (John 8:44Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

See All..., emphasis added throughout).

People today blithely stumble along in their lives, ignorant of the fact that there is a "god of this world" (2 Corinthians 4:4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

See All...), Satan the devil, who is in control behind the scenes and behind much of what happens on earth (see Matthew 4:8-9 [8] Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;

[9] And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.

See All...). Although most human beings either ignore or deny this truth, God doesn't. He has a plan to resolve this greatest of problems.

God's plan is to send Christ Jesus to earth to remove and incarcerate the god of this world (Revelation 20:1-3 [1] And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

[2] And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years,

[3] And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.

See All...). Early in the history of mankind, Satan hijacked humanity, beginning with Adam and Eve (Genesis 3) and since that time, he has held humankind captive through his counterfeit religious teachings (2 Corinthians 4:4In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.

See All...; 11:13-15).

Except for a tiny few, all men, women and children are, albeit unknown to them, constrained in a religious straightjacket of deception. But God has promised humanity freedom from the influence of Satan and the demons. That will happen only after they are removed and constrained. And they will be!

Both the prophet Isaiah and Jesus Christ clearly reveal that Satan will be incarcerated—prevented from continuing to deceive all of humanity—for 1,000 years when Christ establishes His Kingdom on earth (Isaiah 24:21-22 [21] And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.

[22] And they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison, and after many days shall they be visited.

See All...; Revelation 20:1-3 [1] And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

Saddam, like Hitler and Stalin, is an unwitting pawn of Satan the devil; all three human tyrants have ignorantly and slavishly obeyed him. When Satan is removed from power on earth and Christ sets up His sovereign rule, even the notion of tyrannical despots will disappear from our thinking.

As Micah 4:4But they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the LORD of hosts hath spoken it.

See All... foretells, ". . . Everyone shall sit under his vine and under his fig tree, and no one shall make them afraid; for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken."

Pondering the Value of Life

Pondering the Value of Life

article by Victor Kubik

Being a pastor in Terre Haute during the media circus of the McVeigh execution forced me once again to examine the meaning of life.

TERRE HAUTE , Indiana -- June 11, 2001 -- As a pastor of the United Church of God in Terre Haute, Indiana, I have been asked on a few occasions to join prayer vigils for locally held but world-known prisoner Timothy McVeigh who was executed today. I have declined to participate because the publicity surrounding this man is so out of proportion to its importance. The countdown to the execution became a media event with a life of its own. This was to be the first federal execution in over 30 years. The next one scheduled for this prison is less than two weeks away, but most will never learn or care about who the person was or what he did.

Our western Indiana city gained notoriety as the site of the execution of the perpetrator of the worst terrorist crime in U.S. history. Our city will be relieved when this event passes. This issue has spawned endless pages of commentaries including this one.

Today Timothy McVeigh was administered two lethal injections into his leg. He died peacefully, in stark contrast to his crime in which 168 people violently perished in the deafening explosion that destroyed the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Terre Haute schools were closed as a precaution against anyone having thoughts of making a terrorist statement. At the federal penitentiary, just a 10-minute drive from where we hold weekly church services, a carnival-like atmosphere existed where various groups were assigned literal camps for their vigil of the impending execution. There were more people camped outside the prison than were incarcerated inside. When the execution was stayed from mid-May, motel owners grumbled about lost business from Indianapolis 500 race-goers because the motel owners gave up that business in order to accommodate media from all over the world that had planned to come for the May execution date.

A few weeks before the execution I drove by the penitentiary and decided to turn around in the main entrance. Very quickly a guard in a flack jacket jumped out in a reactionary manner into the middle of the road. I hadn't witnessed such security consciousness since crossing once from East to West Berlin.

This all began as a tragedy of a misguided mind turning destructive hatred into an attack with no thought of who would be the victims. To his very end, McVeigh was unrepentant. On television the anguish of the families of those killed was played out. While watching one mother describing the loss of her own mother, I, too, broke out in tears as she explained that her daughter knew more about Timothy McVeigh than about Grandma.

What is life worth? What is its value? Our temporary lives on earth are preserved by values and rules given by God. Life is so short to begin with. With demonic destruction like the Oklahoma City bombing one asks, What is life about? What does all this mean?

When seeing the surviving family members talk about lost loved ones -- sometimes with great hatred towards the murderer -- I could not help but wonder how I would do in similar circumstances. Would I be able to forgive? Would I want to witness the execution?

My mind turned to other thoughts about the value of life and to honoring those close to me: my wife, children, family, my congregations and friends. I found myself resolving to value all these while I can. I prayed that I would not have to regret anything about any of my relationships should something happen to them. The desire to reach out in love and live at peace with those I come in contact with became overwhelming. I wanted to reach out and hug my wife and son whom I love. I want to celebrate and show appreciation for LIFE.

I look forward to a world that God offers us in His Word. This is a world in which He will heal all the pain this world groans from. At the resurrection, death, the last enemy, will be destroyed. There is a time coming that will distance the ugliness and horror of this world and indeed will restore and honor life.

In the McVeigh case "an eye for an eye" was delivered, but it did not heal. In God's promised world a healing will take place that will reconcile us to the Power that most humans do not want to access at this time. The Holy Spirit of God will heal, cleanse and give life.

After the parade of events in this saga, I rejoiced in the gospel of Jesus Christ, through whom there is eternal life and healing.

America's Revolution and the Bible

America's Revolution and the Bible

article by Melvin Rhodes

Prior to the American Revolution, the American colonists were the most enthusiastic royalists in the English-speaking world. Why that changed is a fascinating story and a fulfillment of Bible prophecy.

"In September 1761, the colonial Englishman Benjamin Franklin, on tour in the Low Countries, eagerly anticipated a return to his home in London to attend the coronation of George III. With his invitation secured, he reached London in time for the festivities, but a storm delayed his arrival at Westminster Abbey and he had to content himself with watching the pageant from a distance."

So begins an article in the August 2007 edition of History Today magazine. "The American Monarchy" was written by Frank Prochaska, who teaches history at Yale. For students of British and American history, it is fascinating. It should also be of great interest to those who understand the biblical truth of the modern identity of the tribe of Joseph.

"Franklin's admiration for his monarch had few limits. After a dinner at Versailles hosted by Louis XV in 1767, he reported that 'no Frenchman shall go beyond me in thinking my own king and queen the very best in the World and most amiable.' As a frequent guest at court, he attended George III's birthday festivities in 1771, and the following year wrote to his son of the King's 'great regard' for him."

Pointedly, the American author writes: "As Franklin's devotion to royalty illustrates, it was no easy matter to break with so universal a system of government as monarchy, especially for colonial subjects who thought of themselves as patriotic Englishmen and their King as a guardian of the Protestant faith and the 'father of his people.'

"George III was no less revered in America for being so remote. Distance made him a more difficult target and enhanced the monarch as symbol. With an ocean between them, few colonists ever set eyes upon a member of the royal family, but they demonstrated their allegiance through ritual celebrations of royal birthdays, coronations and marriages."

Uniqueness of the American Revolution

If it was "no easy matter" for the colonists to break with the British monarchy, why then did it happen?

A PBS series on the subject of the American Revolution some years ago came to the conclusion that it should never have happened. An episode of the History International Channel's Global View came to a similar conclusion, with all panelists agreeing that the rupture between Great Britain and its American colonies set back the power and influence of the English-speaking world.

A&E's presentation on Benedict Arnold noted that, on the eve of the final Battle of Yorktown, most colonists were loyal to the crown. John Adams, who would become the second president of the United States, wrote that the colonies were divided into three thirds—those loyal to the crown, those who wanted a break with the crown and those who were indifferent.

Perhaps most telling is the simple fact of the uniqueness of the American Revolution. It is the only revolution in history led by people who were, on average, wealthier than the people they rebelled against! Generally, in revolutions, the poor majority rebel against the rich minority, but this was most decidedly not the case in America over two centuries ago.

As another American historian, Gordon Wood, put it: "The social conditions that generally are supposed to lie behind all revolutions—poverty and economic deprivation—were not present in colonial America. There should no longer be any doubt about it: the white American colonists were not an oppressed people; they had no crushing imperial chains to throw off" ( The Radicalism of the American Revolution , 1991, p. 4).

Understanding monarchy

Over 200 years after the American Revolution, most Americans have a very vague understanding of the institution of monarchy. Eighteenth-century Americans were quite different. Colonists "looked to the King for political legitimacy." They "believed the monarchy to be the guarantor of their rights" (Prochaska).

These rights went back to the Magna Carta in 1215 when England's barons forced King John to give them rights that form the basis of the Anglo-American legal system. Within the same century, the first parliament met. Gradually, through the centuries, the power of parliament increased at the expense of the monarchy.

"Since the early seventeenth century the English had radically transformed their monarchy: they had executed one king and deposed another, written charters and bills of rights, regularized the meetings of their parliaments, and even created a new line of hereditary succession" (Wood, p. 13).

In the 17th century England had even abolished the monarchy and the country became a republic for a brief period. The republic, like the Roman republic centuries earlier, led to dictatorship. The restoration of the monarchy in 1660 was perceived as the necessary balance of power to guarantee freedom from the potential abuse of parliamentary power.

While he was prince of Wales, the future King George III said: "The pride, the glory of Britain, and the direct end of its constitution is political liberty" (Wood, p. 14.) This is also quoted in the History Today article, where the following words are added: "Thus have we created the noblest constitution the human mind is capable of framing, where the executive power is in the prince, the legislative in the nobility and the representatives of the people, and the judicial in the people and in some cases the nobility, to whom there lies a final appeal from all other courts of judicature, where every man's life, liberty and possessions are secure."

So why the break with England? The answer is quite simple. It had to happen to fulfill prophecy.

Fulfillment of Bible prophecy

The biblical patriarch Jacob, renamed Israel, had 12 sons. One of these sons was Joseph, whose brothers sold him into slavery. God was with Joseph who, after years of personal suffering, rose to become the prime minister of Egypt. Eventually, Joseph was reunited with his family. His father, Israel, laid his hands on the two sons of Joseph and blessed them, in one of the most prophetically significant chapters of the Bible.

"The Angel who has redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; let my name be named upon them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth" (Genesis 48:16The Angel which redeemed me from all evil, bless the lads; and let my name be named on them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and Isaac; and let them grow into a multitude in the midst of the earth.

See All...).

"Let my name be named on them" means that Joseph's descendants now carry the name of Israel. In turn, this means that biblical prophecies about Israel in the last days generally apply to them and not the Jews in the Middle East, although the Jews may be included if the prophecy is about all 12 tribes of Israel.

Israel continued, seemingly getting the boys confused by placing his right hand on the head of the younger son, Ephraim, instead of the elder son, Manasseh. This went against established custom and precedent, but clearly Israel knew what he was doing.

"But his father refused [to switch his hands] and said, 'I know, my son, I know. He [Manasseh, the eldest] also shall become a people, and he also shall be great; but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his descendants shall become a multitude of nations" (Genesis 48:19And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations.

See All...).

The two brothers, Ephraim and Manasseh, were to become a great multitude of nations and a great single nation. Nowhere else in history can we see this more than in the British Empire and the United States.

Here we can begin to understand why ties between the American colonists and the monarchy had to be severed. Every British colony had its own parliament. All these parliaments shared a common loyalty and that loyalty was to the crown. American historian Brendan McConville described the king as "the empire's living embodiment" ( The King's Three Faces: The Rise and Fall of Royal America 1688-1776, 2006).

This continues down to the present day when George III's descendant, Queen Elizabeth II, carries the title head of the Commonwealth, an organization composed of 54 former British colonies. The Empire and Commonwealth, made up of dozens of different countries, truly have been "a multitude of nations."

A remarkable story

The American colonies were destined to somehow break with the crown in order to form the great single nation that Joseph's father, Jacob (Israel), said Manasseh would become. So the severing of ties between the American colonists and the English monarchy turned out to be the fulfillment of this important prophecy in Genesis 48. The other colonies remained under the crown. It's a remarkable story, the fulfillment of a prophecy that was written down thousands of years ago and that has not been fulfilled by any other nations.

What is also remarkable is how much the British monarchy influenced the American presidency, the story of which is told in Dr. Prochaska's article. After the Revolutionary War, the new nation was in a quandary. The leaders of the revolution had demonized the king, but they still felt the British had the best political system in the world.

"The hostility to Britain and its King during the Revolution has tended to obscure the constitutional affinities between the two nations. Americans, as Franklin's grandson Benjamin Franklin Bache put it in 1797, created a constitution before they 'had sufficiently un-monarchized their views and habits'" (Prochaska).

"The forms of government on offer to the Founding Fathers were essentially variations of monarchy, 'the rule of one.' Moreover, most colonists had looked favorably on Britain's hereditary monarchy before the Revolution. So too had leading eighteenth century European political philosophers" (ibid.).

Even after the Revolution, "the theory of mixed government of Kings, Lords and Commons had a compelling logic to many Americans who desired security, a just measure of liberty, and the avoidance of arbitrary rule." Continuing, Dr. Prochaska writes: "It is one of the great ironies of the US constitution that the Founding Fathers invested more power in the presidency than George III exercised as King" (ibid.).

He adds: "For all their revolutionary rhetoric Americans treated 'His Excellency' George Washington as a republican version of 'His Majesty' King George. Some Americans, sensitive to the symbolism of power, believed the President required a title and pored over the titles of the European princes to find one that had not been appropriated. Thomas McKean, chief justice of Pennsylvania, thought 'Most Serene Highness' desirable.

"Washington himself was said to have preferred the style of 'High Mightiness' used by the Stadtholder of the Netherlands. The reigning Stadtholder, William V, was among the Europeans who saw George Washington as an uncrowned monarch. As he said to Adams: 'Sir, you have given yourselves a king under the title of president.' In the Senate a titles committee suggested 'His Highness the President of the United States of America and Protector of the Rights of the Same.'"

Fortunately for Americans, both the Senate and the House of Representatives eventually settled for the simple title of the president of the United States.

The blessing of stability

In hindsight, what is truly remarkable is that these two institutions, the British monarchy and the American presidency, have been the solid political foundation blocks upon which their nations have been built. The United States has enjoyed political stability for over 140 years, since the end of the Civil War. Great Britain's period of stability is even longer, going back to the Glorious Revolution of 1688-89.

Those nations in the Commonwealth that have maintained their direct allegiance to the crown have shared in that long period of stability. The nations within the Commonwealth that look to the British monarch as the head of the Commonwealth but have become republics have mostly had a tumultuous ride since severing the direct tie. None has been able to establish a successful republic on the American model.

The blessings promised to the descendants of Joseph could not have been fulfilled without political stability. Economic progress is impossible when there is no solid political foundation.

It is amazing to see how God worked with both Britain and America to give them the solid historical foundation that has made them for some time the most stable governments on earth. WNP

"Taxmageddon" Day in America

From http://el-paso.ucg.org/ or call 1-888-886-8632.

by Darris McNeely

Source: Photos.comTax Day in America, normally April 15, has been extend this year to April 17—the day all tax returns are due to the IRS. My household returns are filed and I'm waiting for a refund. In fact quite a number of American households are waiting for a refund, and likely we have designs on just how to use the money.

Tax policy is a complicated maze that most Americans don't focus on. I doubt most people anywhere understand their nation's tax codes. Governments have perfected a Byzantine approach to taxation that keeps legions of tax lawyers and accountants in business. Despite the billions collected each year national governments still run deficits and cannot produce balanced budgets. America's current public debt is over $15 trillion. Does anyone really understand how much money $15 trillion is?

The old saying, "everybody talks about taxes but nobody does anything about them", is alive and well in this year's presidential campaigning. Just last week there was a lot of talk about the tax rate for wealthy Americans, whether or not the wealthiest pay their share of taxes. If you don't know the intricacies of the tax code it is easy to get caught in a spirit of anger and accusation when it comes to this subject. How wealth is created and distributed is a complicated issue. In a modern complex world, the explanation does not always go in straight lines. But something could be changing in a few months to change the old saying about taxes.

On January 13, 2013 a number of tax cuts, some dating back more than ten years, are set to expire. In addition, taxes connected with President Obama's health care initiative are set to kick in. If all goes as planned it will be the largest single tax hike in U.S, history. Most Americans will begin paying more taxes. T he Washington Post aptly called the unprecedented $494 billion tax hike "Taxmageddon," and Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke described it as a "massive fiscal cliff." I think we are talking serious money here!

A simple explanation of this large tax increase can be found at Taxmageddon: Massive Tax Increase Coming in 2013 .

Raising taxes during an economic recovery is risky business. There is no guarantee that increased taxes will lower an already high debt or generate needed growth in the economy. There is plenty to argue that increased taxes will create bigger economic problems. This article also points out that uncertainty about this one issue is causing business to pull back on hiring and expansion since they do not know what impact these tax changes, if they are allowed to stand, will have on an already uncertain economy. This is important.

Like I said, most people really don't spend much time trying to understand the tax code. We have lives to live and we leave this messy business to others. But the advice the prophet Samuel gave to the elders of Israel when the desired a king sounds wiser than ever.

Israel wanted a human king like all the other nations on the block. Samuel warned a king would begin to take more and more of their resources. Their young men and women would be brought in to serve the state. An ever increasing administrative structure would develop. The best of their capital would be appropriated. Increasing percentages of taxation would be developed. In the end the people would complain and ask God for relief. God, Samuel explained, "will not hear you in that day". (1 Samuel 8:11-18 [11] And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: He will take your sons, and appoint them for himself, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and some shall run before his chariots.

[12] And he will appoint him captains over thousands, and captains over fifties; and will set them to ear his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and instruments of his chariots.

[13] And he will take your daughters to be confectionaries, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

[14] And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

[15] And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

[16] And he will take your menservants, and your maidservants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

[17] He will take the tenth of your sheep: and ye shall be his servants.

[18] And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king which ye shall have chosen you; and the LORD will not hear you in that day.

See All...).

God did not hear them in that day and looking around at the present economic mess we have created I don't think He hears today.

Compared to today's tax complexities the "flat tax" ten percent God had in place (aka tithing) sounds better all the time.

Remembering the Titanic: Looking Back and Looking Ahead

article by Scott Ashley, Tom Robinson

April 15, 2012, marks the 100th anniversary of the most famous peacetime maritime disaster in history—which was also one of the deadliest. The sinking of the British ocean liner Titanic continues to fascinate people today. And it still holds important lessons for tomorrow.

The Titanic berthed at Southampton docks.

Source: WikimediaTitanic. The name has conjured up powerful images and emotions since the ship's fateful voyage. Dozens of books and several major films have recounted her tragic story. The 1997 blockbuster Titanic, already one of the top-grossing films of all time, is getting a theater re-release.

Although April 15 marks a century since the sinking of the Titanic, we are still fascinated by her story. The magnitude of the disaster seems unthinkable: More than 1,500 passengers and crew lost their lives in the icy North Atlantic while only just over 700, mostly women and children, were saved.

Many of us have heard the "what if" questions: What if the ship's lookouts had seen the iceberg in time to turn and avoid it? What if Titanic had struck the iceberg at a different angle? (Had she hit head on, the ocean liner would have been severely damaged, but likely would have survived.) What if her crew had heeded the warnings of ice in the area and slowed down rather than continuing her course near top speed? What if she had carried enough lifeboats for all the passengers and crew? What if the SS Californian, only 10 miles from the dying Titanic, had heard her frantic distress calls?

Perhaps part of our grim fascination with the doomed ocean liner is the profound sense of unease it creates in us. After all, Titanic had everything going for her. She was likened to a luxurious floating palace, one equipped with the most advanced engineering and safety features of her day. Her captain was one of the most respected and experienced men in the White Star fleet, making one last voyage before his planned honorable retirement.

It's been reported that an employee of the White Star Line remarked at Titanic 's launch from its Northern Ireland shipyard on May 31, 1911, "Not even God himself could sink this ship." Others have attributed a similar statement to a Titanic crew member at the start of her maiden voyage nearly a year later. It may be a myth fabricated after the disaster, but the word "unsinkable" had been associated with the vessel, the White Star brochure stating that "as far as it is possible to do so," she was "designed to be unsinkable." No guarantees in that, but those behind her construction were certainly brimming with confidence.

The White Star Line's managing director even made it a point to join her on her maiden voyage. Some of the wealthiest men in the world chose her to travel from Europe to the United States. Several hundred less-wealthy passengers in the third-class section looked forward to building a new life in a new country. But it was not to be.

What should we learn from this disaster?

History shows that a series of small errors and miscalculations compounded to create catastrophe. Everything that could go wrong did. The best of human intentions, engineering skills and construction methods proved powerless to avert disaster. Man and woman, rich and poor, young and old alike, met a common fate.

It's fitting at this anniversary to recount Titanic 's tragic tale. But we should also ask an urgent question: What lessons should we learn from this catastrophe?

With a measure of apocalyptic fervor surrounding the year 2012, there is rising interest in what the future holds for planet Earth—as well there should be regardless. Although the Bible makes no connection between the year 2012 and Christ's return, its prophecies have much to say about the end of this age of man and the dawn of a new age to come.

The Bible makes it clear that although we cannot know the exact time of events that are prophesied to happen, we nonetheless have a distinct spiritual obligation and responsibility. In Luke 21:36Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

See All..., after describing the earth-shaking events that would precede His return, Jesus Christ warns His followers: "But keep on the alert at all times, praying in order that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man" (New American Standard Bible, emphasis added throughout).

He tells us to be vigilant in getting and keeping our spiritual house in order that we might be prepared for that time: "Be on guard , that your hearts may not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day [of Christ's return] come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth" (verses 34-35, NASB).

Let us, then, look again at what happened to the Titanic and consider some important lessons this terrible disaster provides. Most especially, let us not be like the ship's ill-fated crew and passengers, racing forward in the darkness while ignoring the signs of danger gathering around us.

No cause for alarm?

On April 10, 1912, the 882-foot-long British luxury liner, the largest passenger steamship of her day, set out on her maiden voyage from Southampton in southern England, bound for New York City. But she would never reach her destination. For on the cold, clear night of April 14, about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland, disaster struck. And by early the next morning, the great ship Titanic would be lost to the deep—with less than a third of those who'd been on board surviving.

Earlier on the fateful day, as passengers enjoyed a relaxed party atmosphere, radio messages were received from a number of ships in the vicinity warning of icebergs. Titanic 's captain Edward J. Smith—highly experienced and now on his final voyage before retiring after 38 years of service—still maintained near maximum speed, as was common practice at the time. He did adjust course slightly to the south, though, and as night came the crew maintained a careful lookout.

By conventional thinking, collisions with icebergs could do serious damage but were not typically disastrous. In fact, five years earlier Smith in an interview had stated that he couldn't "imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that." Of course, the night's events would prove that thinking sorely mistaken.

Sitting stationary for the night about 10 miles away, the SS Californian radioed a last warning at around 11:30 p.m. of more ice in the area. But Titanic 's radio operator Jack Phillips was in the middle of his job of relaying personal messages from the passengers to the relay station at Cape Race in Newfoundland. "Shut up! Shut up! I'm working Cape Race," he sharply told the Californian, stating he already knew of the ice. In reality, he didn't understand the gravity of the situation and failed to pass the warning on to the captain.

In the calm, moonless night, there was no ocean swell to help the lookouts atop the ship spot nearby icebergs. So danger wouldn't likely be seen until just before encountering it—especially traveling at high speed.

At 11:40 the lookouts spotted an ominous mass just ahead and telephoned the bridge to report that a collision was imminent. The ship's course was immediately altered, but avoiding the iceberg was impossible with impact only seconds away.

And then it happened. Passengers felt a faint shudder or jarring but there was no major jolt—no apparent cause for concern. Most passengers concluded it must not have been important.

Soon afterward, though, the ship's engines stopped. This was noticeable, and a number of passengers walked out to see what had happened. Stewards told them there was nothing to worry about—that they'd struck a little ice but all was well.

Facing reality

On the ship's bridge, however, the full horror of what had happened began to sink in. Capt. Smith, Bruce Ismay, head of the White Star Line, and Thomas Andrews, the ship's builder, were in disbelief.

The iceberg had scraped the ocean liner's hull on the right side beneath the water line, buckling steel plates in places and popping out rivets for a length of nearly 300 feet. The ship was designed to withstand a certain amount of flooding. With its double-bottomed hull divided into 16 watertight compartments, it could remain afloat if as many as four of these were completely flooded. But the iceberg had opened the first six compartments to the sea. What this meant was that the ship was going to sink. As stated in the movie Titanic, it was "a mathematical certainty." An estimate was given of one or two hours.

At 12:05 a.m., now April 15, the order was given to uncover the lifeboats. There had been no prior lifeboat drills, warnings or preparation. And tragically, as all aboard would soon learn, there were not nearly enough lifeboats for everyone to be rescued.

In directing passengers to safety, there were no bells or alarms. First-class stewards went cabin to cabin asking first-class passengers to go up on deck and put on life belts. At first there was some joking, the passengers being completely unaware of the seriousness of their situation. People from second and third class came later, with less chance of making it onto a lifeboat.

Yet those with the least chance of rescue were men—even those of first class. This was particularly true on the port or left side of the ship. An order had been given to board women and children first. The person in charge of launching lifeboats on the starboard or right side, First Officer William Murdoch, took this order to mean that for each boat women and children were to be seated first—and if no more women and children were present yet, men could then fill up the vacancies and the boat would launch. But Second Officer Charles Lightoller, in charge of loading lifeboats on the port side, took the order to mean that no men could board lifeboats at all, except for pilots, until all women and children on the ship made it into lifeboats.

Titanic' s band began to play on deck to help calm the passengers, who now faced anguish, fear and sorrow as the loading of lifeboats continued. There were tearful goodbyes as husbands, fathers and brothers were left behind. And some wives decided to stay with their husbands.

Help would not come in time

On the bridge, continual attempts were made to signal for help. A few ships did respond. The Carpathia, 58 miles away, promised at 12:25 to get there as fast as she could. Even the Olympic, Titanic 's sister ship 500 miles away, responded. Yet no ships could make it there in the short time Titanic had left.

The only vessel within range was the Californian. Yet its radio operator, rudely cut off earlier by Titanic 's radio operator, had called it a night and was sound asleep. Starting at 12:45 and for the next hour, Titanic 's crew fired distress rockets into the air. Crew members on the Californian, seeing the rockets, took them to be ongoing festivities on Titanic 's celebrated maiden voyage. It never dawned on them that the great ship was sinking and that what they were actually seeing were desperate pleas for rescue. So they didn't wake up the radio operator to find out what was going on.

By 1:55 the last lifeboat was lowered to safety, these craft carrying just over 700 of the more than 2,200 people who had been on the ship. More than 1,500 people were left aboard with nowhere to go.

The deck had been tilting more and more as the front part of the ship filled with water. Soon the stern of the ship would be lifted completely out of the water. Some people jumped overboard and swam toward the lifeboats. But most never made it.

Finally there was a great roar as the ship was torn asunder, and at 2:20 a.m., 2 hours and 40 minutes after colliding with the iceberg, the great ship Titanic sank into the ocean depths.

Many who had jumped from the ship were still alive in the icy water until they quickly succumbed to hypothermia and exhaustion (although one lifeboat did go back and rescued three people from the water).

The Carpathia, steaming at full speed, arrived at 4 a.m. Her crew picked up the survivors from the lifeboats. But the mighty Titanic was gone, with more than 1,500 of her more than 2,200 passengers and crew dead.

It didn't have to happen

One of the most tragic aspects of the Titanic saga is that it did not have to happen. False assumptions were made about the invincibility of the ship's engineering and technology. Warning signs en route went unheeded—and there was a glaring lack of proper provision and preparation for such a scenario. When the accident happened, most had no idea what was going on. And even as they learned of their predicament, people were slow to accept the reality of the situation. All of this, of course, presents important spiritual lessons for us today.

As outfitted as she was with technological advances and remarkable amenities for passengers to enjoy, she was not outfitted for what she truly needed—the survival of all on board in the event of dire emergency.

While Titanic could hold more than 3,500 passengers and crew, her lifeboat capacity was only 1,178. That's because out of the 64 wooden lifeboats she was built to carry, she carried only 16 (the minimum required by law based on outdated standards, and perhaps above the minimum by certain legal exceptions). With four additional collapsible lifeboats, Titanic carried 20 in all.

Planners assumed it to be unlikely that lifeboats would ever need to hold everyone from the ship at once—since what seemed more plausible was a breakdown of the ship with lifeboats ferrying a few passengers at a time to waiting rescue vessels in the busy North Atlantic sea lanes. A full complement of lifeboats would also require more experienced sailors on board to pilot them—deemed a useless manpower increase since they probably wouldn't be needed. And it was also felt that, should major calamity strike, getting more than 16 lifeboats away would be difficult enough anyway.

This faulty reasoning, and a desire to cut corners, ultimately cost a huge number of lives. By the lifeboat capacity, no more than half the people on the ship would be able to survive in the event of unforeseen disaster.

Even then, many of the lifeboats themselves ended up well short of capacity—especially early on. Only a little over 700 people escaped to these craft, when they could have carried nearly 470 more. Why?

One factor was the delay in launching the lifeboats. After hitting the iceberg, it took an hour to assess the damage, recognize that sinking was inevitable, start informing passengers and then start lowering lifeboats. This left less time for lifeboats to be loaded and sent off.

Another contributing factor was the reluctance of passengers to board the lifeboats initially. Things still looked safe on the ship—more so than floating away in little boats on the icy Atlantic at night. And the "women and children first" protocol required married couples and families to split up—the men perhaps being left to perish—adding to the reluctance.

Furthermore, while first- and then second-class passengers came on deck relatively soon, it took much longer for those in third class to hear about what was going on. Many had no idea how to even get to where the lifeboats were, having to be led there by crew—and many never made it there at all.

Clearly, in hindsight, there was in all of this a lack of foresight and proper planning —as well as misplaced confidence and refusal to accept reality until it was too late.

Lessons for our day

We can draw clear comparisons with modern society. Ours is a technologically advanced age filled with more luxuries and conveniences than any time before. And we have faced serious challenges before, always managing to come through them with little lasting impact. We're quite sure of our ability to meet any difficulty, surmount any obstacle.

Yet we are speeding headlong into the darkness, oblivious to the growing danger—with most people unaware of the very real possibility of complete catastrophe from several directions, any of which could send civilization plunging into the abyss.

Make no mistake. The Bible says it's going to happen. Human society, despite its marvels, will founder and plunge into collapse because it's built on the wrong foundation. It rejects God and His laws—following the way that seems right but really leads to death (Proverbs 14:12There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

See All...; 16:25).

Jesus Christ was asked by His disciples in Matthew 24 about the end of the age and the signs that would lead up to it. In His outline of coming events, He spoke of a time of great trouble so bad that nothing like it has ever happened—and explained that if that period were allowed to run its course without divine intervention, no one would survive. But, He went on to say, for the sake of the elect—God's chosen people—that time will be cut short (verses 21-22).

As with the Titanic, some will be spared from the coming disaster that will engulf the entire world.

In Revelation 3:10-11 [10] Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth.

[11] Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

See All..., Jesus says that He will protect faithful servants "from the hour of trial which shall come upon the whole world." Earlier, during His physical ministry on earth, He made the same promise (Luke 21:34-36 [34] And take heed to yourselves, lest at any time your hearts be overcharged with surfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and so that day come upon you unawares.

[35] For as a snare shall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

[36] Watch ye therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass, and to stand before the Son of man.

See All...). We find similar promises concerning the end of this age in Isaiah 26:20Come, my people, enter thou into thy chambers, and shut thy doors about thee: hide thyself as it were for a little moment, until the indignation be overpast.

See All... and Zephaniah 2:3Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD's anger.

See All....

But far greater than the promise of safekeeping through coming travail is God's promise of eternal salvation—granting the gift of eternal life in His Kingdom to those who follow Christ and submit their lives to His rule now. This will not be a matter of physical wealth, looks or societal connections, but who you are on the inside. The selection applies to those called by God who respond in the right way and continue to do so—remaining faithful to God and His way of life.

An earlier ship and earlier catastrophe

The book of Genesis records the story of another great ship—yet this one did not sink but was itself a quite literal lifeboat when human civilization then sank beneath the waves of the Flood.

The patriarch Noah, "a preacher of righteousness" (2 Peter 2:5And spared not the old world, but saved Noah the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly;

See All...), lived in stark contrast to the world around him. At that time, people lived life spans of centuries cut off from God, becoming more and more corrupt and evil. Indeed, things were so bad that God determined to destroy mankind altogether, except for Noah and his family, to give the human race a fresh start.

Many scoffed at Noah as he followed God's command to build the massive ark. But when the rain came and the waters began to rise there was no more laughter. Like the people who remained on the Titanic, the people of that day were trapped with nowhere to go—and they all drowned.

Jesus went on in Matthew 24 to point out that before this age comes to an end at His return, conditions will strikingly parallel the time of Noah (verses 36-42). And when the wayward ship of human society collides with destiny and goes under, God will provide a way of escape for those whom He chooses. Yet sadly, many will be unaware that anything is really wrong until it's too late.

God won't turn a blind eye forever to the rising corruption encircling the globe. Nor will He forsake those who perpetually cry out to Him against the evils of society. A day of reckoning is coming—a time when society will be judged and those who follow God will be delivered.

If God brought judgment on the wicked and spared the righteous in the days of Noah and at other times, we can trust that now also "the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment" (verses 9-10). Just as God delivered Noah, so will He do the same for the righteous of this end time—those who resist the sinful ways of this world.

A world caught unaware

In Luke 17 Jesus warned, "And as it was in the days of Noah, so it will be in the days of the Son of Man [the time of Christ's return]: They ate, they drank, they married wives, they were given in marriage, until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came and destroyed them all" (verses 26-27).

So the end of the age will catch most people unaware—they will be going about their lives as normal, oblivious to reality—just as those aboard the Titanic did not immediately realize when calamity struck that their time was up. This passage shows the tendency of people to assume that the longer something has been so, the longer it will stay that way. The Word of God, though, labels this a faulty assumption. The people of the prophet Ezekiel's day made the same mistake. One notion put forward was: "The days are prolonged, and every vision fails" (Ezekiel 12:22Son of man, what is that proverb that ye have in the land of Israel, saying, The days are prolonged, and every vision faileth?

See All...). Another stated, "The vision that he sees is for many days from now, and he prophesies of times far off" (verse 27).

It was apparently this way in Noah's day too, with some thinking the judgment wouldn't happen and others thinking it wouldn't happen for a long time—that is, "until the day that Noah entered the ark, and the flood came..."

The people needed to take God's warnings seriously—as people need to take His warnings seriously today. God's justice is sure. It will come. And there are many signs to let us know that the time for its coming is near—that we are now in the last days of this evil age.

Furthermore, we must not place undue confidence in man and human civilization (Jeremiah 17:5Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.

See All...). Cracks are evident throughout society. And we must not ignore them thinking they mean nothing. For like a bulge in a wall that's come to be ignored because it's been there so long, its "breaking comes suddenly, in an instant" (Isaiah 30:13Therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.

See All...).

We don't have to be those who fail to heed the warnings. We know the ship is going to sink. The signs are everywhere. The hull's integrity is compromised. And the water is about to come flooding in.

Society at large will go on ignoring the evidence, thinking civilization unsinkable—until it sinks. But we don't have to go down with the ship. For God will provide a way of escape and ultimate salvation to those who will fear and obey Him through Jesus Christ.

So whenever you look around at the wondrous advances and amenities of modern civilization—and of the seeming stability of your own nation and the world order—just remember the mighty Titanic 100 years ago. The great ship seemed unsinkable. But all was not as it seemed.

.
