Book Review - Escape from Camp 14: One Man's Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West

The amazing story of a man born in a labor camp, his escape and his life afterward.

Imagine if the concentration camps that the Nazis ran were still up and running. And instead of being a place where the racist Aryan German Nazis worked Jews to death, it was Aryan German Nazis working other Aryan German Nazis to death. No racism involved, just control and hatred.

Such is life in the labor camps of North Korea, which have been in operation for 60 years. Places where enemies of the state are sent to basically work until they die. But instead of being able to simply die, they're matched up in marriages arranged by the prison guards, so that they bear children who will work their entire lives in order to pay for the sins of their parents. Prisoners are punished to the third and fourth generation.

Plenty of North Koreans escape the control of their country, seeking refuge in South Korea, China and other countries. But very few, if any, have ever escaped the labor camps. And no one who was ever born in one has escaped. That is, until Shin Dong-hyuk escaped in 2005.

This book tells of the unbelievable, awful, outrageous humiliation, torture, inhumanity and pain that Shin underwent in Camp 14. It describes the cruelty of the guards and the inhuman, animalistic nature that children born in the camps develop just to survive. It also tells of his escape, and his life after the camp.

My consistent thought while reading this book was how nothing but God's judgment on those in North Korea who are so cruel to fellow human beings could ever suffice in bringing final justice; and nothing but God's unending mercy, love and grace will ever suffice in restoring humanity to the victims who endure or have endured it.

God's Kingdom come quickly.
